Chalky Final Four – This is a Good Thing
College Basketball March 31st. 2008, 11:00am
And that’s primarily because the Elite 8 games were tremendously disappointing. It all began Friday when all four games were decided by 15 or more points. The highlight? Stephen Curry, the English major. Saturday: a blowout and the Tyler Hansbrough show. Sunday: a blowout and Davidson nearly blowing up every bracket in the blogosphere. If that’s not enough blowing for your liking, there’s always Jay Bilas and Tyler Hansbrough’s Will, and Jay Bilas and Tyler Hansbrough’s Heart.
(Aside: How bad was Dick Enberg Saturday night? We found little or no fault with any of the announcers this weekend, but Enberg seemed to struggle tremendously with fouls, possession, and famously, the stat sheet and Tyler Hansbrough’s “nine” assists. But the guy’s 73 and he’s a Capricorn, so it’s all good.)
So Memphis/UCLA (Tigers favored by one) and UNC/Kansas (Heels favored by three). This seems like fun. Of course we’d prefer Stephen Curry and the Wildcats (and his mom) to the lucky-as-hell Bill Self, but it’s hard to find fault with what appears to be two fantastic matchups.
Our early, worthless picks are Memphis – we give small advantages to Rose over Collison and Anderson (who has been their unheralded defensive star in the last two games) over Westbrook – and Kansas. This may change once or twice during the week, of course. You’ll have four days to breathlessly breakdown the matchups, and 96 hours to pray that Joey Dorsey talks idiotic smack about Kevin Love the way he foolishly went off about Greg Oden last year.

bill self sucks. typical over-his-head-coach-at-a-big-time-program. bill self…john cooper, ron zook, billy gillespie and matt doerty are waiting for you in the conference room.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:03 am
Memphis all the way
March 31st, 2008 at 11:03 am
TBL picking Kansas? Why am I not surprised? Notice how there was no reason given for why Kansas will beat UNC.
Enberg is awful now, he has become the new Pat Summerall with 500 mistakes or “beg your pardons” during a game.
Definitely happy it’s chalk, the four best teams will get to play to decide who is champion, doesn’t get better than that.
I think it is UNC/UCLA in the Final, UNC wins it.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:04 am
Did I miss something? When did this “chalk” saying become popular? Was it just recently?
March 31st, 2008 at 11:05 am
if there is a god, kansas will win and self will say ‘i dont give a shit about north carolina’
then kansas will get stomped by the winner of the other game
get it done big guy
March 31st, 2008 at 11:06 am
This guarantees three fantastic match-ups, no matter who wins. Memphis looks unbeatable, but I say they go down against the KU/UNC winner. Probably KU.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:08 am
As someone who can win the office pool if Kansas beats North Carolina (and it not mattering who wins the other game), I say, go Kansas and Memphis/UCLA!
Based on how they’ve been playing to this point though, it looks like North Carolina and Memphis. Memphis absolutely cock-slapped Texas.
Also, is it at least mildly creepy that TBL (A) knows Dick Enberg’s sign and (B) that he’s a Capricorn makes up for sub-par game calling?
March 31st, 2008 at 11:08 am
KU has no shot against UNC if Rush shoots as lousy as he did yesterday. Sasha Kaun can’t be your best player against UNC.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:10 am
I think UNC is going to spank KU. KU seems very overrated to me, and while very talented on paper, doesn’t seem to get it done when it counts. Luckily they played Davidson yesterday who made it way too hard on themselves with so many forced threes. KU was just begging to get knocked off. Maybe it is because of their coach….don’t know.
The Memphis UCLA game could be very good. Rose is just a stud. No two ways about it. Collison is also great. A matchup of two of the best PG’s in basketball. 3 of the best PG’s in basketball are in the Final Four including Ty Lawson. Pretty good stuff.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:11 am
no idea, nobody was sayin that last year. it needs to die immediately.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:14 am
Yeah, TBL didn’t suprise me w/ his picks. You know, a team that blows out three teams in a row and beats a game Louisville team can’t beat a Jayhawks team that, despite having great talent, becomes vulnerable in close games and tends to disappear at times. I blame Self, who’s not a real X and O’s type of coach if you ask me.
As a Tar Heel, I know that I’m biased but come on man! I also know that Hansbrough is the new Brett Favre to the media but hey, the kid is damn good and its not like he’s self promoting a la Chad Johnson or (insert over-hyped, me first athlete here). I told you guys before that he has more than the “lean into the defender and get fouled” post move and he showed it Sat. I told you guys he had a reliable 17 footer and a damn good spin move, not to mention an ugly as hell but effective shot put/half hook. He also plays pretty good D (won’t get you 4 blocks a night or anything, but kept Padgett quiet all night and overall the LU front court were silent for key stretches of the game). Not to mention rebounding.
This a good team, TBL, quit hating. Hell, I’ll even give dook some dap when they’re good, begrudgingly but still…
March 31st, 2008 at 11:20 am
i hope UNC crushes Kansas. I dont think Kansas even has a chance to be honest.
With that said, i would like to see a UNC vs Memphis final. Memphis on top because of there outstanding defense and not letting UNC run up and down the floor. Rose > Lawson, CDR > Ellington, Anderson > Guinyard, Hansbrough > Dorsey, Stevenson > Dozier
guard play will win that game
March 31st, 2008 at 11:24 am
irish…agreed, tho the dropoff from rose to lawson isn’t that significant. id be happy to have either of those guys.
UNC vs. Memphis would be must watch TV for anyone.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:25 am
BORING! This year sucks. Oh look all #1 seeds, kill me. I still think UCLA is weak and Memphis will win it all. If UCLA runs into a good front court, they are done. That big dude from Memphis will own Love. Love just isn’t that good in my opinion. I know his stats say otherwise but he seems slow and unathletic from what I have seen.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:27 am
I have Kansas-UCLA in my bracket, but the way all 4 are playing now I have to think it will be UNC-Memphis.
I am also happy the #1’s all made it, truly shows who the best team in the country will be.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:29 am
I just want to know what “chalk” means
Sincerely,
Addled in Atlanta
March 31st, 2008 at 11:29 am
Love is good. He isn’t an impressive physical specimen, but get your head out of the NBA workout/combine fog. He is a great player.
Everyone is always fawning over Dorsey, but I’m not sure why. Dude can’t play worth a shit. Yeah he is a best and could probably bench press my family, but he is very dispensable on the floor. He is good for some rebounds. Dozier is a better post player. Rose and CDR are the key players on that Memphis team. As for Rose, he just continues to get better and better.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:30 am
If people can’t get excited about the four best teams in the country, they’re not college basketball fans. I hear the NIT has some nice match-ups between some amazingly mediocre teams, though, if that’s your kind of thing.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:31 am
If Joey Dorsey doesnt show up, Memphis is in trouble. Dorsey is the key to that team
March 31st, 2008 at 11:31 am
Atlanta, see here:
March 31st, 2008 at 11:34 am
Come on irish. Do you even watch this team you are constantly in love with? How in the world is Dorsey the key? How is the 6th leading scorer the key to a team loaded with talent?
March 31st, 2008 at 11:36 am
CDR is the key. i love that guy, i wish i watched more Memphis games this year.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:36 am
Mike NYC–thanks. Why did it all of a sudden become chic? I fucking hate it.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:36 am
Look at some newpaper articles and see what his own teammates said about that SEAn Jean
March 31st, 2008 at 11:38 am
Sean Jean–tread lightly. Dorsey is reaching DHoward status.

March 31st, 2008 at 11:39 am
Atlanta, this is a chalk era and we are all just living in it.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:39 am
After finally getting an extensive look at Rose (I hate watching college hoops), I’ve come to the conclusion that the man is a sick beast. He’ll thrive in the pros, especially if he can find a better jumper. He reminds me of Penny with his athleticism from the PG spot.
And unlike Gordon, he actually can play PG.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:40 am
Sorry irish. I don’t see it. I think it’s pretty clear CDR is the key to Memphis’s success. Dorsey is a role player. Nothing more.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:40 am
Yeah…UNC is totally pwning the chalk.
/I also can’t stand the whole pwn thing either.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:40 am
“Chalk” is a term I remember from the first NCAA bracket I ever filled out. Mike, thanks for the background. For those of you who didn’t know it, congrats on being clueless, and more than likely winning your office pool because you are a tool.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:42 am
@Die Eagles–I’m truly clueless when it comes to CBB these days, but sadly I didn’t win my office pool. I lost pretty badly, actually. So there goes your theory.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:42 am
atl: At least Howard is good. Praising Dorsey is like me saying that the Lakers season depends on Ronny Turiaf.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:44 am
Exactly…when everyone knows the Lakers hinge on Vujacic.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:46 am
@die: Picking pointless upsets for the sake of picking upsets is every bit as asinine as picking chalk just for the sake of picking chalk. The best picks typically come from looking at a combination of recent trends and year long stats. Usually, it results it a couple of 2s or 3s in the final four, but this year all the numbers said these are the four best teams and can prove it in the tournament. I picked all four number ones, but in my elite eight, they were playing a two, two threes, and a six.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:47 am
I love the one entry in the TBL pool where the person picked a UMBC/Mt. St. Mary’s final with UMBC winning it all.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:47 am
But hey, Turiaf’s got a lot of heart
March 31st, 2008 at 11:50 am
that was just plain mean
March 31st, 2008 at 11:51 am
Technical foul.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:52 am
I’ll root against Memphis out of spite…ruined any chance I had of winning money since I had Texas in the Championship Game losing to the Fighting Hansbroughs (who even if he had a broken leg would still will himself to 17 and 12)
March 31st, 2008 at 11:53 am
C’mon guys! That’s not any worse than the Cory Lidle jokes!
March 31st, 2008 at 11:55 am
it was mean, i never said it wasnt funny or in good taste.
fuck ronny turiaf, i cant stand him.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:56 am
Every time a Lidle flies into a building, a Turiaf gets a heart.
Circle of life.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:57 am
@ Ben..I def think you can’t pick upsets for the sake of it. I think most should know what “chalk” means. I am referring more to the fact that people that are less informed tend to win these tournaments because they are luck, and I am just bitter about losing.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:04 pm
@die: agreed. Hmmmm, better seed means winner. I think I’ll pick that. I hate those people. As an aside, in my office pool I create a theoretical ‘chalk’ entry just to see how it would do against everyone else. Right now, it’s winning.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:27 pm
@Sean Jean- was hardly praising Dorsey, in the latest SI magazine CDR was quoted to saying that. thats all i was trying to point out.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I went with a new system this year based on an article I read that said the Ken Pomeroy rankings correctly predicted 53 of the 2007 matchups, I followed the rankings which got me 7 of the final eight and all four final four teams, the problem is Ken continues to update the rankings as games are played and sometimes what seemed like a good matchup changes three weeks later. However, he still has Kansas #1 against #2 UCLA which is my final and if Ken is right I win the TBL pool and my money pool. I just want the Kansas UCLA final so I can hedge the pool winnings with a UCLA win bet and walk away with some money either way.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
@ted: I also like the Pomeroy rankings; they’re usually solid. I also like to incorporate the adjusted scoring margin in the statistical part of the analysis. I think an important part is the last 10-12 games played as well. Duke is a perfect example of this. The statistics love them (ASM and Pomeroy), but they were playing like shit when the tournament started.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:55 pm
irish: You said if Dorsey doesn’t show up, Memphis is in trouble. That he is the key to that team. Sounds like praising him to me. Splitting hairs.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:08 pm
cmon sean jean. get over it
March 31st, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Enberg needs to wrap it up…and this is coming from an IU guy. He’s D-U-N, done.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:16 pm
YOU get over it.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:16 pm
@sean jean- Memphis owns the state of TN basketball. Your coach is at home right now thinking of ways he can SNITCH on Coach Cal. They recruit the same areas, yet Memphis gets the best players. No investigations yet, but maybe your sntiching coach can think of some to make his ass look better
March 31st, 2008 at 1:34 pm
lol. Dude I don’t care. I was just giving you shit. Trying to rile me up about TN basketball is a lost cause. We’ve always sucked.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:39 pm
I was under the impression that Memphis liked to recruit mostly from shadowy “prep” schools located in places like shopping centers and Laurinburg, NC.
March 31st, 2008 at 1:41 pm
@sean jean- Go ‘canes
March 31st, 2008 at 1:47 pm
robert: Yeah I’m pretty sure most of Memphis’s players under Calipari have come from the NE or other metropolitan areas (Rose from Chicago). The only player I think both Pearl and Calipari have recruited from Memphis was Willie Kemp, who went to Memphis.
irish: Right on. Randy Shannon in ‘08. Errr, maybe ‘09.
March 31st, 2008 at 2:31 pm
I did not love Duke going in but thought they had good match-ups with WVU and Xavier, can’t get them all
March 31st, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Sean John: Not according to their roster…
15 Andre Allen 5-10/205 Guard SR Memphis, Tenn./Booker T. Washington
5 Antonio Anderson 6-6/210 Guard JR Lynn, Mass./Lynn Tech/MCI/Laurinburg Prep (N.C.)
35 Hashim Bailey 6-10/273 Forward/Center SO Paterson, N.J./Passaic Co. Tech/The Patterson School (N.C.)
3 Joey Dorsey 6-9/265 Forward SR Baltimore. Md./Douglass/Laurinburg Prep (N.C.)
14 Chris Douglas-Roberts 6-7/200 Guard JR Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech/Northwestern
2 Robert Dozier 6-9/215 Forward JR Lithonia, Ga./Lithonia/Laurinburg Prep (N.C.)
1 Willie Kemp 6-2/175 Guard SO Bolivar, Tenn./Bolivar Central
20 Doneal Mack 6-5/175 Guard SO Charlotte, N.C./Statesville Christian School
31 Chance McGrady 6-2/180 Guard JR Auburndale, Fla./Dr. Phillips
4 Pierre Niles 6-8/310 Forward SO Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway/The Patterson School (N.C.)
32 Jeff Robinson 6-5/210 Guard FR Columbus, N.J./St. Patrick
23 Derrick Rose 6-3/190 Guard FR Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy
0 Shawn Taggart 6-10/230 Forward SO Richmond, Va./Mt. Zion Christian Academy (N.C.)/Iowa State University
March 31st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
So Andre Allen and Pierre Niles are from Memphis? I have no idea who Pierre Niles is, and I’m pretty sure Allen is a senior (aka before Pearl was recruiting). So like, I’m right and stuff as far as UT and Memphis recruiting the same players.
Unless you are talking about the recruiting from the NE thing. Hell i don’t follow Memphis’s recruiting, I just know Pearl and Calipari have only recruited the same player once in Kemp.
