Ballin’: “The Reverse HEAT”
NBA March 31st. 2008, 9:20am
As the Playoffs approach, don’t forget that we’re also nearing the Finals of NBA.com’s Dance Team Bracket. It’s what this time of year is all about.
Boston 88, Miami 62: Despite Blake Ahearn’s (Yes, the same Blake Ahearn who shoots free throws with his mind.)12 points off the bench, the Heat’s anti-magical season continued with a loss to the Celtics. Every Celtic to play scored. All twelve of them. Leon Powe scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the 58-15 Celtics.
Atlanta 114, New York 109: Jamal Crawford scored 39 points, hit 7-three-pointers and handed out 8 assists for the Knicks, but as usual, it just wasn’t enough. Joe Johnson had 25 points and 13 assists for the Hawks as they continue to hold onto the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Marvin Williams added 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Sacramento 120, Seattle 107: Kevin Martin scored 31 points and Ron Artest added 29 for the Kings. Kevin Durant scored 25 for the Sonics. Neither of these teams will be in the playoffs. I assume you knew that, but I thought I’d inform you just in case.
Cleveland 91, Philadelphia 88: LeBron James bounced back from a pretty weak night on Saturday to come within a rebound and an assist of a triple-double. Delonte West added 18 points and 11 assists.
Los Angeles Lakers 126, Washington 120, OT: Kobe Bryant (26 points) had a less than stellar evening from the field (7-24), but made up for it from the line (12-15) and by sharing with his teammates (13 assists). The Lakers are 1 game out of first in the West. Deshawn Stephenson and Nick Young each scored 27 for the Wizards.
Golden State 114, Dallas 104: Monta Ellis scored 30 points and the Warriors moved into a three-way tie for the 7th and 8th spots in the West. All three teams are 45-28 with 9 games to go.
New Orleans 118, Toronto 111: Chris Paul had 16 assists to compliment his 20 points. David West added 32 points as the Hornets notched win number 50 into the bedpost. Chris Bosh scored 21 to lead the Raptors.
San Antonio 109, Houston 88: Weren’t the Rockets the number 1 team in the West, like, yesterday? The Spurs have now climbed into a semi-tie for the Rockets’ old top spot. Tony Parker and Michael Finley each scored 22 points as the Spurs won their 7th straight game. T-Mac was held to 13 points on 5-22 shooting.
Minnesota 110, Utah 103: Al Jefferson had 22 points and 3 blocks to lead the Timberwolves over the Northwest Division-leading Jazz. Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams each had their usual double-doubles in the loss.
*Warning: Blake Ahearn will destroy anyone caught arguing about Kobe and LeBron in the comments – with his mind.*

dirk fucked me in the fantasy playoffs. what a fucking douchebag.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:25 am
Mavs are ripping my heart out. Ugh.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:27 am
You didn’t mention that that the Heat only scored 17 FGs the whole game. THe whole fucking game! Amazing.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:30 am
Once again, the season closes and the Spurs are near the top of the West. After so much wailing over how they didn’t look interested and would suffer, guess that they can turn it on at will, huh?
Meanwhile Houston seems to be dropping somewhat off the pace. Once the streak ended, it’s not like its the same team.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:31 am
The Heat should be moved down to the developmental league for the rest of the season. They are obviously tanking it.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:33 am
The NBA – where we welcome back Rafer’s 30% shooting. Looks like he’s bringing friends, too! Hello, T-Mac and your 5-22 effort!
March 31st, 2008 at 9:35 am
My boy got hit with a paternity suit. It was filed against him for his kid that he fathered out of wedlock with that Miami Heat dancer that we had a post on, Royce Reed. Here is the article if anyone wants to read it
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-mnotes2908mar29,0,5018640.story
is Dwight Howard the next Shawn Kemp?
March 31st, 2008 at 9:40 am
The Hawks could spell trouble for the Celtics in the playoffs!!
/blatant homerism (and tongue in cheek)
March 31st, 2008 at 9:44 am
@irish, he’s got a loooonnnnggg way to becoming Shawn Kemp. He needs about 10 more.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:44 am
the nba where paternity suits happen
March 31st, 2008 at 9:55 am
The NBA: Where dancers “forgetting” to take their birth control happens.
March 31st, 2008 at 9:55 am
at least the Clippers have a hot dance team to entertain there fans
March 31st, 2008 at 9:58 am
I love that dancer bracket. Nothing like looking at skanks first thing in the morning.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:05 am
Did anything interesting happen in the NBA last night? Besides the Rockets being certified as frauds (sorry grungedave). Is everybody hungover or what?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:05 am
am i crazy for liking jamal crawford?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:09 am
Like Spencer, I have a severe case of the Mondays, I think a bachelor party will do that to you.
And no Spencer, I don’t think you’re crazy for liking Crawford, he has been a big asset on my fantasy team all year.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:11 am
Best thing about that Rockets/Spurs game yesterday was the fact that Van Gundy couldn’t keep slurping the rockets
March 31st, 2008 at 10:14 am
cbh…thats the thing, z-bo has really been a huge help to my team as well. would i touch them if i was a real GM? FUCK NO. too crazy, but in fantasy you look at their numbers and think, “dear god, these guys are legit top-10 players at their position.”
March 31st, 2008 at 10:22 am
Can we all agree to stop bitching about MVP’s after 50 games? It’s as fruitless as a Masters Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Syarcuse. LeBron won’t even be in the top 3 at this point, the Cavaliers are headed for 44 or 45 wins!
March 31st, 2008 at 10:24 am
And someone tell Chris Broussard his column about “Careful what to wish for” – another Kobe rip-fest has been written 25 times already this season. Sure the argument is valid, that Kobe wanted Bynum out of there, but how about the fact that they wouldn’t have Gasol if Kobe didn’t rip the organization and threaten to leave.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:24 am
Sure, as long as we can all agree that the Lakers are 39-15 with Bynum or Gasol in the lineup and 11-10 without either.
Kobe Bryant, your 2008 MVP.
Sorry Chris Paul; Kobe is due.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:25 am
all yesterday proved is that we need to avoid San Antonio in the playoffs. We’ve recently beaten the Lakers, Golden State, Denver, Dallas AND New Orleans. San Antonio and Phoenix are who I worry about.
Rockets are no more of a fraud than about 29 other teams in the NBA.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:27 am
Houston is just as big a fraud as Stephen Curry.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:28 am
Look at that Heat box score and just try to tell me that isn’t the worst team ever. The Tarheels would easily hang with these guys.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:30 am
Yao Ming is a pussy
March 31st, 2008 at 10:30 am
Nick, what are the Hornets without David West and Peja? You don’t give MVP’s based on performance without the two best players. I’m pretty sure most teams would suffer when they’re missing two out of their top 3.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:31 am
Why is Stephen Curry a fraud? Is that because he’s good? Where does Hollinger have hive ranked? (Anyone else notice Bill Simmons ripped Hollinger’s stats for having Shane Battier so low)?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:31 am
No one on the Heat is as hardworking as Tyler Hansbrough, but that’s only because Blake Ahearn doesn’t have to try to succeed.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:31 am
stereotypes are fun.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:32 am
Cursed, I thought some of the biggest broadcasters went to Syracuse, am I wrong?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:33 am
Chris Paul is the MVP. The Hornets are going to be the number one seed in the west. That sentence alone gets him the MVP
March 31st, 2008 at 10:34 am
CBH49er, it was a joke about my going nowhere career!
And YYSA, CP3 probably should get the MVP, but I’m still thinking Kobe’s going to win. The Lakers have had as many injuries as anyone, and they’re right there.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:34 am
@yysa- no he wont. New Orleans comes to Orlando tomorrow night to play in Disney. Im excited for a Tyson vs Howard match up.
sad to say, KG looks like he will win. Dwight howard in a close second
March 31st, 2008 at 10:35 am
I’m just following in the TBL tradition of calling everyone who doesn’t go undefeated a fraud.
He did really stink up the joint yesterday, though.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:37 am
Howard won’t finish in the top 4. Of that, I’m sure.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:37 am
this year was great. any number of guys could legitimately win the MVP without too much bitching.
i say we give it to Z-Bo for comedy’s sake.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:38 am
I think my head will explode if UNC loses to either Kansas or UCLA/Memphis and I come on here and see TBL say “well I said all along UNC were frauds”.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:39 am
CRM: His will is bigger than his skill.
God I am sick of hearing Bilas say that.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:39 am
@nick- he will be ahead of Lebron that is for sure. Record of 50+ wins by then will just add to it. Cavs will be lucky at this point to get 45 wins
March 31st, 2008 at 10:40 am
memphis looked pretty damn good against texas
March 31st, 2008 at 10:41 am
@Sean Jean: You forgot to add on the “and his skill is considerable” part
March 31st, 2008 at 10:42 am
Loosely translated, “His will is bigger than his skill” means “This kid sucks.”
I hope Psycho Gay doesn’t consider that a compliment.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:42 am
Also, on Curry, I think his biggest problem is shot selection, which just comes with inexperience. Keep in mind he is a Sophomore, and totally owned everyone in the tourney. It’s just late in the game against Kansas, when it really counted, he forced it way too many times. He was great in that game up until that point also. Pretty impressive. He just needs to learn to take care of the ball better and take better shots, even though he can make a lot of those tough ones.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:43 am
The Beard: Good call.
It’s a hilariously big slap in the face. I’m almost starting to route for Hansbrough just because he gets evaluated from everyone like they are NBA scouts. Bottom line, he’s a college player right now, and he is a very good one. He simply gets it done. Stop looking ahead Bilas.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:43 am
You notice how the media will rip Kobe for wanting to leave L.A. all season but none of them EVER rip Shaq for the bs he pulls every time he gets traded to another team.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:44 am
Where were all the Tenn players during there loss to louisville?
March 31st, 2008 at 10:46 am
Kevin Love > Tyler Hansbrough
March 31st, 2008 at 10:46 am
irish: Bah. Don’t even bother. I think they suck just as much as you do.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:48 am
Memphis is still better than Tenn Sean Jean. Just like ive been trying to tell you all year
March 31st, 2008 at 10:49 am
At the end of the year, yes it appears that way. During the season though: I don’t think so. I think Tenn just couldn’t handle the pressure and ran out of gas. Oh well.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:49 am
Shaq always been loved and always will be loved. Doesn’t make it right – its just the way it is.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:50 am
Why was Davidson so intent on taking a 3 that last play? A two would have sent it to overtime, and number 14 was wide open by the basket.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:52 am
I think Shaq gets a pass (however unfair it made be) because he’s not such a surly douchedick like Kobe. He kinda made his bed and is laying in it.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:52 am
@sea jean-ran out of gas lol. what kind of excuse is that? and you want to tell me i suck. Funny
March 31st, 2008 at 10:52 am
I know I was pissed at Davidson’s poor execution on that last play.
March 31st, 2008 at 10:54 am
Derrick Rose > D.J. Augustine
March 31st, 2008 at 10:54 am
irish: I’m not making excuses, but there is no doubt the team I saw play the last 4 or 5 games wasn’t the same one during the season. They either ran out of gas, or simply fell apart. They weren’t the same team though. I think they shit the bed too. I’m not defending them. I’m in agreement with you.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:04 am
We can all stop debating the MVP, as long as we are also not debating the FACT that the MVP is not the best NBA player.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:13 am
Surly douchedick. awesome.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:14 am
Shaq is a douche he’s just a funny douche so people laugh at him.
March 31st, 2008 at 11:42 am
Besides the Rockets being certified as frauds
After one loss? Is Hef actually Jay Mariotti
March 31st, 2008 at 11:46 am
Yes but he is not a douchedick like Kobe
March 31st, 2008 at 11:58 am
One loss? They’ve looked overmatched now that the easy part of their schedule has disappeared. $1000 virtual dollars says they don’t make it out of the first round (again). Not trying to pile on Hakeem (or grungedave), cause I’m trying not to be such an asshole anymore (one day at a time) but even when they won 22 in a row I wasn’t convinced and I’m even less convinced with each passing day.
March 31st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
RD, depends. Kobe might win the MVP this season.
