Yardwork: The 3rd Opening Day of the Season
Baseball April 1st. 2008, 9:00am
Indians 10, White Sox 8: Jim Thome had two homers in his ‘08 debut. He also wears tight pants and a large cup. Mark Buehrle lasted five outs before hitting the showers after giving up seven runs.
Nationals 11, Phillies 6: Lastings Milledge had a homer and two RBI helping the fattys move to 2-0 on the season. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley both homered for Philly. Kevin Stocker went hitless again.
Diamondbacks 4, Reds 2: Brandon [quote] weavs Webb [end quote] of 6-inning, 2-run ball for the defending NL West champs. Aaron Harang still hasn’t won since the 3rd week of September, 2007.
Dodgers 5, Giants 0: The only thing rising faster than gas prices is the ERA of Barry Zito. And the only thing plummeting at the inverse rate is your credibility as a human being if you thought that first line was funny.
Brewers 4, Cubs 3: Mr. Fukudome went 3-for-3, including a 9th inning 3-run homer off Eric Gagne to tie the game. Tony Gwynn Jr. hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th off Bob Howry and celebrated by eating seven Twinkies.

casey blake > miguel cabrera
April 1st, 2008 at 9:05 am
how bout my Dodgers. Starting the year off with a shutout
April 1st, 2008 at 9:06 am
the prog was rockin yesterday!!
even though casey came through big yesterday i still will never really like the guy
April 1st, 2008 at 9:07 am
Some observations after yesterday: The Giants have the worst lineup in the game, Gagne is done as a closer (again), and the Brian Roberts sweepstakes will expand to the Cubs detriment if the Rockies or the Padres are in contention.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:08 am
@irish- can you explain the Dodger alegience? I don’t want to give you sh*t for being a bi-coastal fan (Dodgers-Magic) without knowing the story first.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:08 am
@Spencer are you nuts or just an indians fan?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:10 am
J Style…both. and i was just trying to be a douchebag, which i succeeded in doing.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:10 am
Hey, the Rangers held the worst hitting team in baseball to 5 runs yesterday. That’s gotta be good for us, isn’t it?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:11 am
Barry Zito is one more example of the brilliance of Billy Beane.
That said, this looks to be a bleak year for poor ol’ Oakland.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:12 am
WTF!?! My Pirates start the season 1 and effing oh and get nary a mention?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:13 am
Jebus…yea, seriously. in 2002, would you have ever thought even for a second that Mulder, Hudson AND Zito would all be jokes?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:13 am
No mention of Mr. Santana? I’m only a Mets fan via marriage (translation: not much), but he looked great. His only hiccup was after he had to sit for 30 minutes while the Mets batted around in the 4th.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:13 am
Casey Blake is a valuable player. He’s about an average hitter but really good with the glove.
@J Style: Are you telling me that Randy Winn hitting 3rd isn’t something that interests you?
Adam Dunn > Kobe
April 1st, 2008 at 9:15 am
Hudson’s not.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:15 am
Well if the White Sox are going to suck again I’d rather they be 2004 bad instead of 2007 in that they can at least score some runs
Beuhrle is bizarre in how once or twice a season he gets absolutely lit up but is usually good otherwise
April 1st, 2008 at 9:17 am
nick i just never really liked the guy…i think my hatred is more from his offense
he played pretty well at 3rd last season though, guy just loves to not come through, although yesterday he was huge (obviously)
April 1st, 2008 at 9:19 am
casey blake is the RP in VORP.
yea, i went too far calling Hudson a joke, but to think, of that trio that dominated earlier this decade, he’s the only one playing remotely good, and he’s been a disappointment.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:21 am
Where is the love..as I mentioned earlier..for this brief moment in time the Rays are atop the AL East…
April 1st, 2008 at 9:25 am
Compared to what Hudson was in Oakland, and compared to the usual translation of AL pitchers to the NL (ie. they usually dominate a weaker league and weaker line-ups), I think spencer was right on in calling Hudson a joke. 2007 in Atlanta was an ok year, but 2005 and 2006 were NOT what Atlanta thought they would be getting. I’m [pretty sure they thought they were getting more than a 13-, 14- and 16-game winner, with mid-3 or 4+ ERA.
The Mulder deal was my favourite though.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:25 am
WELCOME TO THE FUK-U-DOME!!!!!!!!!
not original, and frankly, i dont care. every time i read his name i die laughing.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:26 am
Hudson and Zito havent been the same since they left Oakland. Ran out and got the big contracts and not producing
April 1st, 2008 at 9:27 am
Santana looked great. I am in a man-crush triangle with Wright and Zimmerman.
Also, TBL if the guy matures, you have a steal in Milledge….
April 1st, 2008 at 9:27 am
How bout the atrocious relief pitching across the league yesterday?! Wood, Gagne, everyone in the ATL/PIT debacle?!
April 1st, 2008 at 9:27 am
@Spencer–I was thinking the same thing last night after hearing about Zito. Granted it’s only one game and he could start to turn things around, but you have to wonder what the deal is with Zito, Hudson and Mulder.
And Hudson had one bad year (’06), one ok year (’05) and one pretty good year (’07) and has started off ‘08 pretty well. His numbers would’ve looked better last year if he had more run support (although I’m sure there’s some stat that would validate that–not sure what it is, though…maybe ERA+?). Either way, I think calling him a “joke” is going a little too far.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:27 am
He was sub-par in 2006, but pitched great in 2005&7.
What did Oak get for Huddy?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:29 am
@Nick–Charles Thomas, Dan Meyer, Juan Cruz. So, not much…unless Meyer pans out.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:32 am
Yeah, dealing Lastings will obviously come back to haunt the Mets. You know he’s going to explode against them this year. Problem is that he just wasn’t a great fit with them.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:33 am
could the ‘deal’ with those 3 be that they were given a great defensive club behind them while pitching in an extremely friendly pitcher’s park?
perhaps for mulder and hudson…zito is just a wreck.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:34 am
Yeah, I hated the deal, but we have……..Alou
April 1st, 2008 at 9:35 am
why, because he was only talented instead of being EXPENSIVE and talented?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:36 am
Pirates, Royals and Rays all in first place. Ah, the joy of Opening Day.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:36 am
Great to have Yard Work back
April 1st, 2008 at 9:38 am
Milledge was a malcontent and the Mets are trying to building on character. They don’t want another Kevin Mitchell corrupted Doc & Daryl situation again. They want to protect Jose and Wright and let them have positive role models.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:41 am
But those two are older than Milledge.
Zito’s problem is just that he can’t even hit 90 anymore or miss bats.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:41 am
Other than that, he’s golden.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:47 am
I have noticed that when your team is expected to be great it is usually not good for them. After yesterday the media swarmed Leyland and Verlander asking them all sorts of rediculous questions. I wanted one of them (preferably old smokey) to say “That was ONE FUCKING GAME guys.” If the media would ease up, it would be for the better.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:50 am
maggs that just isnt the way the media works…they lost to the royals so i guess that means they will finish in the cellar in the central this yr
just wait till the sox and yanks play and the lead item on sportscenter is whats wrong with the yanks/sox and does this spell doom for yanks/socks
April 1st, 2008 at 9:51 am
Huh? Orlando Magic and LA Dodger fan? How does that happen?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:54 am
Are you guys really referring to the Jake as the “Prog”, because that name is retarded.
How about the Big Fender Bender, or Denial Of Benefits park. Someone needs to fix this.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:55 am
nope, it’s still the Jake to me.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:58 am
Thank goodness for the rain. Saved me a horrible start from Francis in fantasy. Worst clean up hitter in the majors right now. Millar or B. Molina?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:58 am
His career is one day old, and I’m already tired of hearing about Fukudome. His name looks like a swear phrase. We get it.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:02 am
dont ruin my fun Jay.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:04 am
Did anyone catch the Cubs fans with FUKU written on their chests yesterday? ESPN had them on the screen for barely a second before they switched cameras. By the way, today marks the 4th opening day of the season as the big ballpark in the bronx (hopefully) opens up for its final season.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:17 am
coop no way i was sayingthe prog as a joke, fox news yesterday morning called it the prog and i thought it was so so lame
April 1st, 2008 at 10:23 am
Good thing they’re playinb baseball in March, because if there’s one thing people were clamoring for, it was a longer baseball season.
Anyone know CC’s era for his last two post-season games and for the opener?
April 1st, 2008 at 10:34 am
While I am ecstatic over Johan and what this season brings..the Justification of the Milledge trade is asinine at best…if this guy becomes a .300 30 100 guy tell me the justification. He didn’t fit on the Mets? you mean in Right or Left Field or as the Righty bat they have been looking for all spring? The only justification for the trade is if the Mets win the World Series or Milledge is terrible…thats it. Don’t give me character…the only thing the kid was guilty over was slapping high five with the fans(the horror!),bankrolling and appearing on a rap album (woo 22 with some money and having some fun) and having Billy Wagner not like him (I hope Billy doesn’t like me it means I am an OK person).
April 1st, 2008 at 10:36 am
@cursed:
5.1 IP & 5 ER
4.1 IP & 8 ER
6.0 IP & 4 ER
15.2 IP & 17 ER = 9.77 ERA
April 1st, 2008 at 10:44 am
No mention of Kerry Wood giving up 3 runs in the 9th as the new “closer”? Douche bag.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:47 am
Kerry Wood gave up 3 runs in the 9th as the new “closer”.
/fixed
April 1st, 2008 at 10:57 am
I would like to echo the sentiments of sportsgal, but direct them to the middle relief savior of the White Sox, Mr. Octavio Dotel. After the offense overcomes the Buehrle disaster and ties the game at seven, Dotel promptly pulls a Kerry Woord and gives up 3 ER in one inning. Thanks again, you asshat.
April 1st, 2008 at 1:26 pm
my marlins couldnt quite out the W.. but tonight we get to see rick vanden hurk and tomorow andrew miller! ah the life of a fish fan.. seriously jorge cantu batting 5th?
