Possibly the coolest story of the year. Kid gets his x-box and computer stolen, and without much help from police, gets all cyber-nasty on these punks, gets help from random internet people, and gets his stuff back. It’s tremendous. As for the photo – this one’s just too good. Plus, we want to get on Jay Bilas’ good side again.
Chris Cooley now has a blog. (DC Sports Bog)
The fierce USC QB battle. (Sporting News)
Former NBA journeyman and Notre Dame star Monty Williams talks to a blog. (Blazer’s Edge)
NBA “glue” guys. (Empty the Bench)
Marko Jaric: “I’m definitely not yet engaged, but it doesn’t mean we’re not thinking about it.” How much shit are his teammates giving him for this, or does he get a pass because it’s Adriana Lima? (People)
Other controversial LeBron covers you may have missed. (C-Notes)
Because it’s April Fool’s Day, and the SI Vault rocks – Sidd Finch. (SI Vault)
Fantasy golf, we kid you not. (Roto Nation)

That xbox story is great…but that kid looks like a joke
April 1st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Cool story about the X-Box dont mean to go all Irish on you tbl but where are the biscuits?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
why are there so many emo kids in philly.
wait…why are there emo kids in general?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
That story acts like Fantasy Golf is something new. I’ve been playing over at CDM since 1997. Won the grand prize back in 2000…$10,000.00.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
@spencer- EMO=?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Went to Cooley’s site and it’s all just…football stuff. Damn. If you want me to go to your site you need to post some pictures of your chick.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
spencer, i agree. none of the engineers i work with look like that.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
@irish: EMO = bags of douche
April 1st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I spent a few semesters at Southern Miss and then moved away. I couldn’t tell you the number of people, even in higher education, who thought I went to Ole Miss when I said Southern Miss.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
EMO roughly= Goth
April 1st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
@Irish,
back in the early 90s, EMO, or “emotional hardcore” was a type of alt, punk, etc music. It probably has a new meaning now, Im way out of touch with the kids today.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:29 pm
IUGrad, you’re pretty much right. it comes from being a fan of Emo music. Its basically kids with hair that covers their face and they never smile.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
But Emo much like goth is so different.
\Sarcasm
Oh and Kansas fans can whine all they want, they’re back in the Final Four, tough shit Roy left you, you guys are fine.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
The other controversial LBJ magazine covers are hysterical!
April 1st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
great read TBL on Sidd Finch from the SI Vault
April 1st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Speaking of emo, I always got a kick out of this tshirt.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Saw 412’s comment and checked that link out, that is fantastic.
Another thing on Roy, Jim Larranaga is contemplating leaving George Mason to take the job at his alma mater Providence. I would hate to see him leave but I would never shit on the guy for going to his alma mater. He did great things for Mason, I will always appreciate that. Kansas fans should do the same.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:35 pm
If I could pull off Emo, then I would be pulling in much tail here in Philly. Yes, they may look like zombies, but alot of them are built nicely. Their loose clothing hides their buttered buscuits.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
EMO huh, learn something new everyday.
Was NEve Campbell in Wild Things a EMO?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
what was that cage they were putting the soccer player in? was it like a medieval penalty box?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
gonzo, thats funny. for the most part, Emo’s don’t bother anyone. they stick to themselves, they just look funny.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
that shirt is fuckin awesome.
my cousin (on my dad’s side, who i never see) is from philly and does the emo thing only he has flame red hair. i asked him whats so hard about his life, seeing as his dad (my dad’s bro) is LOADED and his response was something about the pressure of his dad’s bullshit lifestyle.
i couldnt contain myself and slapped him…fucker deserved it, his dad is one of my favorite relatives and is about as laid back as it gets. why arent there any poor emo kids? why are all these emo kids from the suburbs with successful parents that give them luxuries millions of people would kill for?
it makes me wanna dye my hair black with a white stripe and wear straight legged jeans.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
irish, no she was White trash. little different.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Marko just wants to get married so he can finally get in her pants
/she’s a virgin my ass

Should KU fans have to do it twice? Douggie Gottlieb was just on KC radio and said OSU will offer upwards of $5 million per. Self has a press conference in 20 minutes. Hopefully, he puts this to bed because it’s a distraction.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Why would Bill Self leave Kansas to go to a shit hole like Ok St?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:44 pm
spencer, i was just about to type the same thing.
usually, Emo’s are rich little pussies who don’t have anything to be upset about. They maybe have had one traumatic experience and have never recovered from it. That fat kid from the Sopranos is a perfect example of an Emo kid. He had a real fat dad who was gay and he took it out on his school by taking a shit in the shower. Very wierd.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:44 pm
He might put it to bed, but he could be lying through his teeth, never can trust a coach, what is Kansas paying him? Kansas is a much better job than Oklahoma State in my opinion.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:44 pm
@spencer: I think you meant “skinny” jeans. Oh and 412, that is a great link. I think there is a difference between EMO and Goth. EMO kids tend to like MUSE while Goth kids prefer Manson and Tool.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:46 pm
The internet is a scary place man.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
I’m sure you could find worse examples, but it would take awhile. Muse and Tool? Really?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
That’s the best white guy dunk since Derek Vinyard.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
yea. goth kids tend to like the Cult and the Misfits. emo is more like…actually have no idea because i hear that shit and my ears bleed.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I listen to The Cure and I’m about as emo as Jim Nance.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Replace Muse with…dag, who the devil are the kids listening to these days…Morgan Freeman.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Spencer, you are spot on with your assessment of emo kids.
I think we have Radiohead to blame for this. Is Scott Tenorman emo now?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Don’t lump Radiohead in with emo please.
Radiohead is one of the greatest bands of all time.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:53 pm
CBher49 -
I think KU pays him a smidge under $2 m. it’s hard to say because coaches get all the sneaker contracts and tv/radio money.
I agree. Never trust a coach. Just as long as he can eliminate the distraction until after the Final Four. Roy didn’t do that. He let the story hang around.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Yeah Radiohead is #2 in my top 5
April 1st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Is KU big enough for Mangino and…anyone?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
i rock out to Incubus and Nas. two diff styles
April 1st, 2008 at 3:57 pm
I was supposed to see them live in May for the first time, but my girlfriend and I just broke up and she was the one who got me the tickets, so it’s looking pretty dicey, gotta see them live some day though.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:57 pm
aside from the song Creep (which is the only song I like), Radiohead is the definition of emo. You can’t deny that. Crying and whining every song.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Much as I love Radiohead, I somehow doubt that would be much of a “show”.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Gonzo – Take it back. “OK Computer” is one of the best albums ever!
April 1st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
@CRM: in hindsight, I def could have come up with better choices, but I am lazy and it is the end of the day.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
yea, no radiohead insulting. or pink floyd, john coltrane, grateful dead, or miles davis hatin’…you will anger me greatly.
and i listen to the Cure as well as the Misfits and the Cult and im about as emo as 412…which i assume isn’t that emo.
i think the British are to blame. WW3 anyone?
April 1st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
jb49ers:
Awesome — Irish is now a TBL verb for going a little overboard — love it! It is some of your finest work.
See Irish – I am not the only one who looks to give you the online hotfoot. Haahahhahahahhahahahhahahahahahahhahaahahahahahahahahahah!
April 1st, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I gotta disagree with you, Gonz.
Check out the album The Bends. You’ll think otherwise. I haven’t heard anything off their latest album, though.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:00 pm
OK comp, Kid A, Amnesiac are all great. Thom Yorke’s Eraser wasn’t too bad either.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:01 pm
I guess Gonzo and I are in the minority, but I can’t stand Radiohead. They suck sack.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
their new one is meh. the marketing and distrubuting aspects of it are fucking lightyears ahead of the industry tho. it could be a harbinger of doom for the recording companies.
for anyone who doesnt know: radiohead is selling their new album as a download off their website where you can choose what you pay, even if its nothing. it forces you to put an individual value on art, rather than pay what the industry sets. by doing it this way, the band will see the majority of the profit, which has worked out to around $4 per album as opposed to the $1.20 per album (roughly) theyd see if attached to a label.
this is a massive step…
sorry, my music nerd came out, ill shove it back in.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Amnesiac is particularly underrated.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
I don’t agree that Radiohead is Emo at all. Radiohead is in their own type of music. But it is not emo. Radiohead is a great band. CBH, you need to get those tickets from your ex. i bet that would be a great show.
Which group do fans of Gwar fall under? Emo or Goth?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
late to the discussion but as much as i like radiohead i think the emo group has definitely used them as their unofficial theme music
i hate emo kids so much…oh your life is so bad because you have all this money and all the pressure that goes along with it…die
and irish hell ya Nas…best rapper around IMO
April 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
i like the new album. It isn’t as good as some others already mentioned (Ok Comp, Amnesiac, etc.) but its pretty good. I thought it was awesome what they did to “sell” the new record. I really wanted to buy the limited vinyl but $95 was too much for something that will sit in my closet.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I just about spit out my water when I saw Radiohead used in an Emo example… shame shame shame… by the way, Radiohead is headlining Lollapalooza this year.
I think good examples of Emo bands are Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco. They basically take bad punk music, add shitty lyrics and package it teenagers who don’t fit in with the jocks and preps at their high school.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
GWAR eats emo kids for breakfast and passes them by lunch.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
benji gwar falls under the category “shitty”
April 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I can see why Radiohead could be called whiny, it is in the eye of the beholder, I find their stuff revolutionary.
In Rainbows, the new one, is very good in my opinion. Ok Computer and The Bends are my favorites.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Maybe what I hear is whining and crying and what you hear is soft spoken singing. we can agree to disagree on that. But, EMO is short for Emotional. If you tell me they aren’t emotional (in the sense that their entire collection could probably be the soundtrack of The Notebook), then I can’t follow your arguement.
And to repeat Ben’s comment because it is so beautiful…
Radiohead sucks sack.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
@mmonasty- at least we agree on that
April 1st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
emo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo
April 1st, 2008 at 4:08 pm
@big Nuts- funny how you are still going on about me
get a life
April 1st, 2008 at 4:08 pm
irish, i saw Nas in concert last year at a ballroom. It was awesome. The show was really good. Usually hip-hop concerts suck but that was great. Nas is still on top of his game even as he gets older.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:08 pm
irish you hear anything about his new cd, when is it coming out?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
benji saw outkast the roots and J5 in cleveland once, best convert i have ever seen
nas came to the house of blues here a few yrs ago and missed it, and all accounts said it was an amazing show kick myself for missing it
April 1st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
gwar = goth, and hardly shitty…come on naw.
radiohead, while the idols of the emo crowd, has more in common with pink floyd than Panic at the Disco. as insipid and flavorless as the last decade in popular music has been (and its been REALLY REALLY FUCKING bad), radiohead is it’s flagship, on par with Led Zepplin, Van Halen and Nirvana as decade defining artists.
at least in my opinion.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
mmonast, i know they are shitty. So is goth and emo. i was breaking down shitty music into different shitty subcategories.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:13 pm
If Nas has a new album coming out, I bet there’s a good chance he’ll do Lollapalooza. They usually get a few hip-hop acts (especially local ones like Common, Kanye and Lupe Fiasco). Last year they had people like M.I.A, Daft Punk and Mickey Avalon.
All I know is Radiohead in Grant Park at dark with the Chicago skyline in the background is going to be fucking incredible. Can’t wait!
April 1st, 2008 at 4:13 pm
my mistake benji…personally when i hear panic at the disco i immediately start to vomit…i hate everything about them
April 1st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Another vote here for Radiohead being a Top 5 band.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
sportsgal he goes its called N***** (without the ***) not sure when it is coming out
i heard he is doing lollapalooza, and lupe is great as well IMO
April 1st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Spencer, if you’re going to invoke the Gods of All Genres of Music, please spell their name right (Led Zeppelin).
April 1st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
@sportsgal – You positive about Radiohead at Lolla? I am not doubting you just know that the lineup isn’t released until next Monday. I definitely need to get a Sunday ticket if this is the case.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Weezer is sort of emo, too. Rivers Cuomo does a lot of whining, but their stuff rocks, so I forgive him.
And has anybody played Xbox Live with a headset on? There’s a lot of little kids on there talking shit. Once when playing Gears of War, some twelve year old blew my head off and started yelling ‘What’s up now, bitch? Huh? What’s up?’. It was ridculous.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
@nick: in rainbows, their new album is fantastic.
Gonzo, you used to be cool. Now…
April 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
spartan u gotta give it right back to them…those 12yr old fuckers gotta learn some respect
no one disrespects me playing halo bitch!!
April 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
You spelled it wrong too, brew.
B-e-a-t-l-e-s
April 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I am still trying to rap my head around Nas calling his new album the N word.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
my bad…typing fast, had to squeeze it in.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
@bigtuna – they’ve announced the two big headliners for the weekend, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. Not sure if that was a public announcement, I work for one of the companies that sponsors Lolla, so that’s how I heard.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Earlier today Gonzo fantasized about DPing hot chicks with Matt Leinart…and now he burns on Radiohead. Damn…
April 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Wow, of all the things I’ve said on here, it’s slamming Radiohead that will be my demise.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
i know crazy huh…trying to make a stand against people like russell simmons trying to tell rappers to stop using the word i guess
guess i wont be picking it up at the local wal-mart
April 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Nick…Sgt. Pepper and the White Album were ok…the rest was garbage. gods? please.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
NIN = 1993
April 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I haven’t been able to get on board with Radiohead. Although a friend is a big fan, and we were driving down the road one day. Saw a for sale sign in front of a house with the realtor’s name as “Thom York”–with the first name spelled the same and everything. We immediately went home, printed out a picture of Radiohead Thom Yorke, and taped it over the sign. The best part is the picture was left on the sign for 2 days. We almost wet ourselves everytime we drove by it.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
412, you crack me the F up. At least I wasn’t thinking about Pedro Guererro.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Noooo spence. We agree on nearly everything, but to the death I’ll fight about this.
When those guys started doing acid, their work was the absolute balls.
Pepper’s, Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road, Rubber Soul
White is probably my least fave post-drugs Beatles album, actually.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:22 pm
@Nick–depends on what you’re into music for. As a musician, I recognize Led Zeppelin as the most talented rock group of all time. The Beatles wrote some amazing stuff, and are all gifted at their instruments. But they’re not in the same class musically. But they had Zeppelin whipped on the across the board popularity, that’s for sure. They both catered to completely different audiences though, through much different music. So it’s hard to compare.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
@412, agree with you on NIN. They always seem to get a band that was big back when Lolla first started (last year it was Pearl Jam, year before Red Hot Chili Peppers) to be a headliner.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
I love Led, also, but more so for their songs.
The Beatles just have amazing albums that you have to listen to straight through. The same cannot be said for Led.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Nick…you gotta understand, when i talk about music, im coming from a trained perspective. what i value in music is either expression or complexity (music porn as i call it) and the beatles had none of that going on outside Sgt Peppers.
i just could never get into them ever, and think that their early shit is responsible for the commercialization of music on a world wide level…which has destroyed any artistic value popular music had.
and, i dunno if youve ever done acid, but WHOEVER takes acid is creative beyond belief.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
gel tabs > acid
April 1st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Catching up – just bought the new Lupe (pretty good) and Radiohead (meh) discs.
I agree with Sportsgal – when I hear emo I think of the likes of Fall Out Boy, Panic!, etc.
Big fan of Weezer
Anyone else out there fans of Arctic Monkeys? Love both their albums.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I actually saw NIN with Manson (and the Jim Rose Circus?) opening for them ~ ‘94. Good show…but I can’t say Reznor has done anything much in the period since “Downward Spiral”.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Again, Nick, it’s all about what you’re into. Just the other night, as I was working on my house, I was listening to Houses of the Holy and thought about how magnificent of an album it was. And Physical Graffiti has to be one of the best albums of all time.
And LZ was much more album-driven than the Beatles–that cannot be debated. It’s why they never released a single in England (and only one in the US), because they wanted their albums to be the focus, not just one song off the album.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
If that’s the case, wouldn’t you be a bigger Yes fan than Led?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Gonzo – LMFAO… I just posted the Pedro story in the NL West thread! Completely appropo of nothing!
April 1st, 2008 at 4:27 pm
im a huge Yes fan.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:27 pm
All of those bands/artists suck.
Gimme Avril and Sum 41 any day. Now THAT’s music!
April 1st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Did we ever find out TBL’s musical likes and dislikes? I wonder if it would torn to shreds like his movie taste?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
I liked Yes until college. Then my freshman roommate absolutely killed “Fragile”.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
@Roethlishotdog i like the 1st lupe more than the cool u?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:29 pm
yea, thatll happen. thats probably my least favorite Yes album. Relayer and Close to the Edge are the shit.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I like Yes, too.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Spence, you don’t know what ATM or blumpkins are but you’re a musical theorist?
I don’t know how anyone can argue that the Beatles weren’t the most talented, progressive rock band ever. They went from A Hard Days Night, which was completely pop, to the White Album in less than 10 years! No other band has been able to change their sound so drastically with so much success.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Silverchair
April 1st, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Penske
April 1st, 2008 at 4:33 pm
@Sportsgal–it depends on what you consider “talented.” Musically, as I said before—and I think any other musician would agree—they aren’t anywhere near the realm of Led Zeppelin. But as far as songwriting/lyricism goes, they’re one of the best. I don’t consider a band’s ability to change their sound an indicator of success…but to each his own!
April 1st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Radiohead went from the bends to ok computer and kid a in less than 10 years. That’s progressive.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
sportsgal…King Crimson did that, to a much more drastic degree. but i dont hold Crimson to the same standards i hold the beatles to.
yea, i was a music major in school. i have no excuse for not knowing what ATM and blumpkins are, but i know now and am better off for it.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
mmonast – I don’t have the 1st album so it’s hard for me to compare. I’ll probably pick it up in the near future though. Daydreamin’ is pretty sweet.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Red Hot Chilli Peppers? Like or dislike?
I very much like.
I jsut got into Lupe with the Cool, it is some very good, mixed with some very bad, I need to check out the first album. I am seeing him and Kanye at Nissan in May.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
very much like…cbh the 1st cd is a lot better IMO
April 1st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Holy crap. I just lost like 20 musical IQ points after reading a lot of the comments in this thread. Some of it was cleared up, but let me add my 2 cents anyway. And this is coming from a staunch music nerd.
Emo is not Radiohead. Holy shit what a horrible example. Emo, as sportsgal said, is Emotional whiney shit a la Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Dashboard Confessional, etc. It is essentially bad pop-punk music that is whining about adolescent relationships, and the guys typically can’t sing for shit. It is largely tied in with myspace and people whining about how special and unique they are. It’s crap.
Radiohead is greatness. Not many people who know music think Radiohead suck. They may not be your cup of tea, but you can’t deny their ingenuity and originality. They make great music unlike any other band, and have been doing so for some time now. In Rainbows was one of the albums of the year last year. It’s great. And they are phenomenal live. They are one of the few bands that doesn’t really have a weakness. They can do it all.
and spencer: Yes kicks ass. How great is Roundabout?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
RHCP are pretty good. One of those bands that are able to keep their “edge” about them, but also sell a shit-ton of records. Flea is phenomenal, and John Frusciante is pretty awesome too. Best album is Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I like their newer stuff, but it doesn’t have the same “re-listening” quality to it that their older stuff did…i.e. it sounds worse the more I listen to it…
April 1st, 2008 at 4:38 pm
early Peppers…good. now? one of the worst bands ive ever heard.
atlanta…i dunno, the beatles did some pretty crazy shit harmonically, using classic literature from bach and using secondary dominant keys and shit, zepplin was more of an agressive expression, not really clean or organized, but that was part of their charm.
virtuosity is a whole different realm.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:38 pm
CRM: Silverchair is a great band, and one of the most under appreciated ones of the past 6-7 years. Their new album is pretty hit and miss, but there are a few absolute gems on that album. A few of the songs are way too radio-friendly for my snobbish tastes, but Daniel Johns can really write a great song, and is a great great singer.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:39 pm
+1 sean john
April 1st, 2008 at 4:39 pm
roundabout is fucking awesome. i saw them in cleveland a few summers ago and when they kicked into that shit, it was golden.

“Your Move/I’ve Seen All Good People” is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:40 pm
As for the Beatles vs. Zeppelin discussion, I think that is pretty futile. They were both great and revolutionary. I do think the Beatles were far more prolific and wrote some of the best pop/rock music ever, while Led Zeppelin essentially stuck to blues riffs and the like, but they did it greatly as well.

virtuosity?
The classic with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:40 pm
sean radiohead might not be emo but emo kids love the shit out of them
April 1st, 2008 at 4:40 pm
cbh…exactly.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:42 pm
@Spencer–agreed, the Beatles were inventive at times with what they were doing…but they’re just not on the same skill level musically with Zeppelin. One man’s opinion. And yes, that is the charm of Zeppelin, as you said…
April 1st, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Don’t get me wrong, I love Led Zeppelin as much as I love the Beatles. I just don’t think there’s any band out there that can compare to the Beatles in terms of greatness. But like others have said on here, to each his (or her) own!
I think this is the first time anyone has ever discussed music on this blog… interesting to see a lot of folks on here share a similar taste in music.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:43 pm
@Sean John–agreed. I’m not one of those people that would say “The Beatles suck!” in a conversation about them vs. LZ just because I love LZ. I recognize the Beatles did some absolutely amazing things, and that they’re probably the most popular band of all time. And I also agree that they were doing two totally different things.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
mmonast: I haven’t really found that to be the case. Radiohead is usually not accessible and simple enough for the average emo fan. Emo fans are of the mass consumption ilk. A la, whatever MTV tells them to listen to. There may be exceptions, but on the whole, emo kids listen to the TRL crap.

Wolfmother is one the better shows I saw in the last 2 years.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:47 pm
anyone into iron maiden? jazz? classical?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:47 pm
i dunno, not the dorks i have come across they have radio stickers and all that shit…especially when radiohead had karma police on mtv
i really think that whole bunch of music (panic at the disco etc) really really really sucks
April 1st, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Whenever I hear someone talking in math I find the nearest police officer.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:49 pm
I think more than anything, perhaps Radiohead caters to the largest number of different genres of fans. Indie, mainstream, classic rock, international, etc. Most people who are big fans of music appreciate Radiohead at the very least.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
@spence – I consider myself kind of a music nerd, and I have jazz (Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz) and classical (Bach’s my favorite) on my iPod. I go to about 15-20 concerts a year, although I went to more sporting events in 2007 than concerts.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
This is some insane music stuff here. Lock these comments up and shove them in an internet time capsule.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
sportsgal…i worship at Bach’s altar, i consider him the most important figure in Western Music beyond anyone. i couldnt begin to tell you how deep ive dove into his music both from a performance standpoint and a theoretical one.
jazz is my shit tho.
i too went to more sporting events than concerts, which is kinda sad to say, but whatever.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
@Spence–as far as jazz, I listen to anything Elvin Jones was involved in–just a spectacular drummer. As a result, that means a lot of Coltrane, since he played with him a good bit.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I just need a new Arcade Fire or Clap Your Hands album to come out an I’ll be happy. Other than In Rainbows, haven’t had much great music lately.
Anybody here heard of Vampire Weekend?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
atlanta…elvin jones is THE best. well…yea, hes the best. if youre into drummers, check out art blakey, he’s out of this world. billy cobham is pretty ridiculous as well. as far as modern drummers go, brian blade is outstanding.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
aight, im out for the day…fun talkin music, i could go on for hours.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:57 pm
@Spence–here’s a good video of Elvin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wfVhwPnjeQ
And yeah, big fan of Art Blakey too. What’s your opinion on rock drummers? Are you a Stuart Copeland guy? I think he’s pretty phenomenal. Cocky son of a bitch, but wonderful to watch/listen to
April 1st, 2008 at 4:57 pm
bigtuna – I’ve heard Vampire Weekend, Mansard Roof just started playing on my iPod! They’re playing at the Pitchfork music festival in July, already have my three day pass.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
@bigtuna, the first clap your hands was good. After that, meh.
Vampire weekend is top notch.
April 1st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Yeah, I’m out too. 5:00 bell rings. Agreed with Spencer, I could talk about music for hours!
April 1st, 2008 at 5:00 pm
VW are pretty average. The hype is immense, and the music doesn’t back it up. I don’t think they are bad, but I’d say a 6/10, while the hype implies a 10/10.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are also a victim of the hype bug. A good first album, a pretty poopy second one. Arcade Fire is legit as all hell though.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Hef you are absolutely right. Their first album was just so good that I gave them a pass on the second. Arcade Fire gives me chills. Saw them here in Chicago last year, by far the best show I have ever seen.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
@ Sean Jean – couldn’t agree with you more. CYHSY’s second album sucked compared to the first. They had a good show at Lolla last year, though.
I’m mostly excited about Pitchfork this year because Public Enemy’s doing a solo show Friday night. I’ll also check out Animal Collective and Boris.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Rubber Soul and Revolver are the Beatles masterpieces. Sgt. Pepper was neat and colorful, but musically those two albums are the cream of the Beatles crop.
I saw NIN with Manson and Hole. There was like four Manson fans in the audience, with all black on and chains hanging out of their faces, and he came out and did his schitck, and I thought ‘this guy is going nowhere’. Two months later, he was a star. NIN had a good stage show though, with the movies playing behind them.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Animal Collective is some weird shit. You can’t fault them for not being original.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Go figure, their weirdness appeals to me. Probably because I work in corporate America so I need some weird to stop me from feeling like a robot.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:13 pm
@sportsgal – any idea if The National are playing at Lolla? You seem to have the inside scoop.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Sportsgal: Nah I dig some of their stuff too. I am a sucker for weirdness. I typically like the Panda Bear contributions the most, but Strawberry Jam grew on me.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
last one…
atl…stewart copeland is pretty good. i like mike portnoy from dream theater, peart from rush, bonham, keith moon, bill buford from Yes and King Crimson, a lot more.
animal collective is pretty awesome.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:22 pm
@bigtuna – haven’t heard anything about the lineup other than the headliners. Sorry! If I do hear something, I’ll make sure to let you know. I love Lollapalooza, I thought last year’s line up was incredible.
@sean – agree with you on Panda Bear, those songs are generally my favorites.
April 1st, 2008 at 5:31 pm
156 comments of EMO and no one mentioned My Chemical Romance, who is the most stereotypical EMO group there is? For Shame TBLers!
And anyone here into The Stills?
April 1st, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Hey, at least I got Fall Out Boy and Panic, other people were writing the Cure!!! MCR is definitely EMO. And they definitely suck.
April 1st, 2008 at 8:53 pm
@TBL-thanks for the NBA glue guys. That was a good read. And to see the money attached to it.
