2008 Culture Tournament: Final Four
2008 Culture Tournament April 4th. 2008, 11:39am
Despite a fierce rally behind the amoeba defense, Jessica Simpson was able to hold off Hot Clicks, 52-48, to advance to this weekend’s Final Four in the 2008 Culture Tournament. Also advancing: Clay Buchholz’s Penthouse Pet, who cruised to a victory over the Wire.
So the Final Four, which you can vote on all weekend long, is set: The Office (which returns next week! You’re damn right we watched all four episodes last night) vs. Erin Andrews, and Jessica Simpson vs. Clay Buchholz’s Penhouse Pet. If we had to compare the actual Final Four to our group:
Erin Andrews = North Carolina
Jessica Simpson = Kansas
The Office = UCLA
Clay Buchholz’s Penthouse Pet = Memphis
Don’t ask for an explanation. There is none. Go and vote, and implore your friends to do the same this weekend.

The eyes are the groin of the head.

Awww…I must have missed the Penthouse Pet beating out The Wire
A dark day indeed
April 4th, 2008 at 11:42 am
If Andrews beats The Office, we should just settle this like our forefathers did. That’s right, watching attractive women mud-wrestle to settle the Championship.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Dude, cmon. Jessica Simpson? People please. Penthouse is oldschool smut, you HAVE to respect that.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:43 am
even though it kills me to vote for a non-real person, i voted for The Office. Erin Andrews needs to be stopped.
i watched all four as well. not sure how i feel about NBC doing a spin-off of the show.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:44 am
ive never seen the wire, but i cant stand the red sox and that chick isnt that good looking, so i too disapprove.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:45 am
i just wonder how much longer the office will be on the air. it seems like all of the cast members are having a lot of success on the big screen. i say one more season and then done.

Idiots
April 4th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I call shenanigans on The Wire losing to whitetrash. (TBL, please check your server logs for voting bots.) Maybe if she was Playboy, but she’s not. When I was little, the way my father explained it to me was that he would love to see me date a Playmate, but a Pet would kill my mother.
Omar is rolling over in his grave…

the spin off of the office will be terrible. what character will they spin the show off with? i hope they use creed.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:48 am
The Office spinoff works only if they do one of two things:
1. Make it about Creed and what he does away from Dunder Mifflin
or
2. Office II: Bluth Industries
April 4th, 2008 at 11:50 am
A Penthouse Pet shows vag, never seen the Wire but I guarantee it hasn’t shown any vag.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:51 am
How did any of these beat GOD and Tiger
April 4th, 2008 at 11:52 am
We need a Wire spinoff where McNulty becomes the baddest PI this side of Shaft and hunts down Marlo
April 4th, 2008 at 11:52 am
The Office off to a strong start!
I’m like Dwight – i like to hide weapons around the house.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Jessica Simpson is old news. She needs to be stopped.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:55 am
I watched all four episodes, as well.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Season 2, especially the pic above, was really great. Three was hit or miss, and four has been off the charts.
But, to me, every episode in season one was perfect: The gray tones, and the sluggishness–it was like the British Office, but with better cultural references and American accents.
April 4th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Creed is one of my favorites on that show. His blogs on the website are pretty good too.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
how can I choose between the office and EA?

@ Tugnutts
+1
Perhaps Gobias Industries can play a central role in the plot
April 4th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Jessica Simpson?! Are you effing serous?!
April 4th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Creed: “I’m not offended by homosexuality. In the sixties, I made love to many, many women. Often outdoors, in the mud and the rain, and it’s possible a man slipped in. Would be no way of knowing.”

serious*
April 4th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
@Purdue Matt–I voted with my dick. Sorry.
And using my dick to click on my mouse was easier than I thought…even though I think I’m getting fired now.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
TBL – did you just make a reference to the old UNLV amoeba defense? I honestly haven’t heard that mentioned in 15 years.
Is there really going to be a spinoff from The Office? If it isn’t related to Creed, it will be a bust like Joey. Once the Pam/Jim storyline was settled, the show really dropped off in my opinion. Probably b/c I’ve had managers like Michael Scott, but I can’t stand his antics. Just hits too close to home, I guess.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Don’t all spin-offs fail?
I really dig The Office, but much like the Simpsons 15 years ago, it should be put to bed before it gets stale. The season has seemed really forced. I’ll see how the last several episodes go, but it isn’t must see TV for me anymore.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
jessica simpson is terrible. in many ways. many ways not including boobies
April 4th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Don’t all spin-offs fail?
Enos would like a word with you.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
I don’t get it…EA kills everything in her way, now stopped by The Office, really? That show is okay, but it isn’t anything spectacular. Lost or the Wire are way better.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Saprissa – Yup. A UNLV reference indeed. Nice pickup.
Got an email recently about a Supernintendo Chalmers reference, too. People do read!!
Office > Last three years of Seinfeld
April 4th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
I’m a huge Seinfeld fan, but I would tend to agree. The last three years of Seinfeld were almost unwatchable.
You could probably say “The Larroquette Show” > Last 3 yrs of Seinfeld and I wouldn’t quibble with this.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
From what I’ve read, the creators of The Office have no idea what to do with the spin-off either. And it’s supposed to be ready by the Super Bowl. This could be a diaster.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Last 3 years of Seinfeld were spectacular. Puerto Rican Day, Frogger, c’mon.
The first season of The Office was a (very poor) carbon copy of British Office. It was unwatchable.
April 4th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Fraiser was actually a good spin off from cheers
April 4th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
NO WAY Office > last 3 years of Seinfeld… you can’t beat Kramerica, the giant ball of oil, the voice (la, la, laaa) and then Puddy.
I’ll give you the Seinfeld finale < everything else Seinfeld.
LOL MikeNYC:
Dwight makes that entire show! I can’t wait for the new one next week.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
I thought the last years of Seinfeld were great, some of the best episodes, The Office is slowly creeping up there as one of the best comedies in tv history (IMO) its the perfect show, and it kind of has some similarities to Seinfeld, the most glaring being that Dwight is Kramer.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
With Seinfeld, I think it was around the ‘96-’97 season where Jerry actually admitted that the show was slipping and they needed to improve. It was the season where Jerry shaved his chest hair and acted like a werewolf or something (pretty weak). But I would agree that there were some high spots in the last few seasons (Kramerica, Puddy, etc.), but the consistency of the early 90’s episodes was gone. No coincidence, but the downturn was when Larry David left the show.
April 4th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I know – I used the word “but” way too much in that paragraph. This week can’t end soon enough…..
April 4th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Making me choose between The Office and Erin is flat-out unholy… no man should be asked to make that sacrifice!
April 4th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Scott Stapp is on The Office?
April 4th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Darin and his giant ball of oil disagrees with TBL!
April 4th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
RayMcKigney – have you mended any chicken wire lately?
April 4th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
The definitive opinions on here kill me. Seinfeld was still a juggernaut in the last three years. In addition to Frogger, Puerto Rico Day, etc, there was also the Peterman reality tour and other great ones. What is the constant fascination with people thinking they’re “edgy” if they like the old version of something better? I don’t get this.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
atl – I don’t think it’s a matter of anyone thinking they’re “edgy” so much as people just expressing a view–commonly held among Seinfeld fans–that the last few seasons were subpar. Are you of the opinion that all of the roughly 180 shows were equal in their merits?
April 4th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I thought the first 2 seasons were almost draconian in their suckdickitude. For sure, I prefer it over most sitcome fare, but I hate the first two seasons, compared to the greatness of the rest.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
@412–I do think they were all roughly equal. I guess where my disdain for this comes from is that Seinfeld and Simpsons fans often say the same thing. I can’t remember how many times I’ve heard “The Simpsons has really lost some mph off its fastball.” I think the writing is just as funny and inventive as it’s always been, but the show has been on the air for almost 20 years.
April 4th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
@EF – I have not due to my hands being locked into a deformed position
April 4th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
@atl – I think my point was more than Seinfeld/Simpsons are kind of like the Dave Kingman of TV shows. When they get a hold of one, it’s beautiful stuff. But the consistency was gone for Seinfield, and The Simpsons can be hit or miss as well.
@Nick – I’ve found that the first two years of Seinfeld blow since they are just horribly dated. The fashion, technology, everything. Almost unwatchable, but maybe they’ll get better over time.
