Bidding Adieu to Stephen A.’s Radio Show
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings April 9th. 2008, 12:45pm
As everyone seemingly knows, Stephen A. Smith is no longer going to be an ESPN radio host, and his last show will be tomorrow. He will, however, remain a part of the ESPN family, offering dimestore opinions on the NBA. An interesting word crept into a quote of his in the New York Daily News over the weekend: “reporter.” So no longer is he just an “analyst,” but it appears as if he’s going to go back to his roots and pick up the phone and work sources! Guess he’ll have time now that the radio gig is over. Speaking of the radio career …
How much will you miss Stephen A. Smith’s radio show?
- The second he signs off, 10-kegger at my place to celebrate! (44%, 575 Votes)
- Not at all. He annoyed me. But my ears will no longer bleed, so there’s that. (34%, 443 Votes)
- Who listens to the radio anymore? (10%, 134 Votes)
- A lot. It was a solid mid-day listen, given the crummy alternative in the wasteland that is sports talk radio. (7%, 88 Votes)
- So much that I’m crying. Not sure how I’ll survive. (5%, 62 Votes)

None of those options capture “I never listened to his show anyway so I am not affected at all”
April 9th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
i figured this was bound to happen once he lost his co-hose Mike Missanelli, who went back to working Philly Sports Talk

Finally I can turn up the sound of my radio again. One time SAS blew out the speakers in my car.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
so where is the party?
April 9th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
why would i miss his radio show if he’s so bad on t.v. that i never would ever even THINK about listening to his radio show. fuck espn radio anyway. 660 WFAN, 850 WEEI >>>>>>>>>

But what happened to “Quite Frankly”?
April 9th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
I’ll bring a keg of New Beligum Springboard. Where are we headin?
April 9th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Who is taking his place? And when did Mike Missanelli leave?
April 9th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
if he’s off the air, why can i still hear him?
oh thats right, he yells.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I chose “So much that I’m crying…” but I am also a sarcastic bastard
April 9th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Missanelli started at 950 ESPN in Philly on or around April 1.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I like Missanelli here in Philly. His roots are here. He can be a trouble maker, but he’s good radio.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
oh. TK is on replay during his show so i haven’t listened to SAS in a long time. I’m glad he’s gone but chances are they get someone worse to take his spot.

That photo screams (and I mean screams), “I quite frankly don’t give a damn what you think!”
God forbid he once again pens readable columns. There was a day when his Philadelphia Inquirer columns were great basketball reads.
Like Charlie Sheen at the start of Major League II, that person may never, ever return.

could have been one of the worst, mis-informed radio personalities ever. if it wasn’t hoops he had no clue
April 9th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
So, when can we expect the first interview with Allen Iverson?
April 9th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
So how is ESPN replacing? We don’t get an extra hour of the worthless asshat John Seibel on Sports Nation do we? Ah, god, that’d be horrible.
Nonetheless, SAS was atrocious. I tried to listen when he brought on players, coaches and administrators and that was some OK radio. SAS minimized the yelling, but he’d always refer to most of the players as “one of my boys” or “my man” as if he was buddy-buddy with them. The other 45 minutes in which SAS yelled was just atrocious.

i always loved when he’d say a player is valuable in MLB because he’s in the last year of his contract.

I’m sure it’s some interchangeable East Coast “personality” obsessed with the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry

It’s either an extra hour of Sports Nation or Tirico, and neither option is appealing, IMO. I’ll just listen to the Mike O’Meara Show(no more Don Geronimo after Friday). It’s not sports, but I don’t care; I can’t listen to sports talk radio all day anymore. It’s become tedious.
April 9th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Bruce, I’m interested to hear the Mike O’Meara Show. I find Mike far funnier than Don but when Don would be out and Mike would be hosting the show would be pretty brutal. Mike is a better sidekick. Lately I have found myself listening to the John Riggins show more than Don and Mike.
April 9th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
@CBH - You can listen to Riggins? I think he is awful. I like the Sports Reporters although I wont listen if Czabe isnt on. Not the biggest Polin fan.
April 9th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Always throw in keggers to sway the vote
April 9th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
It’s strange with Riggins Sterlin, I listen almost because he is an idiot in almost everything he talks about. He makes up words, he mispronounces words, he talked about Zednik’s throat “ejaculating” blood when he got cut, his show is entertaining to me in a completely warped way.
April 9th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
The Tirico show is the most vanilla sports talk show I’ve ever heard, his interviews are worthless and irrelevant. SAS at least had interesting opinions (at times).. I can’t stand Tirico/Tafoya/Herbie. So bland it’s killing me that they have three hours to deal with.

The Census is every 10 years, so can we desist with all these media polls, both here and at Deadspin? I will not be canvassed!
April 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
@cbh- yeah, I’ve always though that Mike was the true comic force driving the show. You’ll notice that, other than the solo show he did after Freda’s death, Don rarely, if ever, did a show without Mike. I agree with your assessment, though, about Mike’s hosting by himself; he always seemed to be having a panic attack. I think part of that panic, if you will, was that the show was really Don’s baby(which Don has said, himself, a few times), and didn’t want to screw up. This time, though, you know he’ll lean heavily on Robb and Buzz, plus BA is coming back to produce. It’ll take a while, but he’ll eventually settle in, I think. Whether the show is any good or not remains to be seen, of course.
April 9th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Bruce, definitely happy to hear BA is coming back, I think she actually added something to the show and her and the guys had good chemistry.

Stephen A is a racist and he sucks.
April 11th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Stephen A. Smith sucked. And this is coming from a black guy. He’s one of those who’d get on the soapbox, think that he knows it all and speaks for all blacks and then make an ass of himself. Listening to his show, you weren’t expecting great insight or entertainment. It was more, “When’s he gonna fuck up? What stupid shit is he gonna say next? How off-point and ignorant is he gonna sound on this subject? Let’s see how he’ll somehow stretch this into a race issue.” The only thing worse than being a moron who doesn’t know he’s a moron is being a moron who doesn’t know he’s a moron and has a big mouth. His radio show was a joke, and I always pictured his co-hosts staring at him half the time, like, “They’ve got me on the show to keep this fool in check and bring some common sense. Then what the fuck is the point of me being the sidekick?” Good riddance. I give his run with ESPN another year. They’ve gotta realize that the audience doesn’t like him and his act got old real quick.
Mike Tirico’s show is ASS. It’s painful to listen to. The only way I’ll listen to more than 10 minutes of it is when Scott Van Pelt is carrying it. Which idiot thought it would be a good idea to give the most bland, personality-less dipshit his own show? Was it one of them, “We want an African-American, but minus the controversy” move? He doesn’t bring a fresh perspective, he’s never the contrarian, never goes on a limb, he’s not funny, isn’t an expert/insider in any sport, isn’t a great interviewer, has no sense of humor, has no discernable appeal/quirk that makes him stand out. What’s the point? Maybe they were trying to do a Dan Patrick/Keith Olbermann thing, with Van Pelt : Olbermann, but Tirico is somehow more boring than Patrick. They’d have been better off giving Van Pelt his own show and finding someonw else with a sense of humor to co-host.
