Will Paul Pierce Get Revenge on Al Horford?
NBA, Video April 28th. 2008, 6:45pmIn case you missed it Saturday night, Atlanta rookie Al Horford went sort of ballistic on Boston’s Paul Pierce after making a late basket in the Hawks’ 102-93 upset. The only thing we can imagine that would have set Horford off: “Hey Al, I saw your little brother rapping on the internet. Weak.”
We’re eternally grateful for the trash talk. It gives the series – arguably the least interesting in the first round – some much needed joie de vivre. And actually, Horford’s right: “He don’t need me to fire him up. It’s emotional out there. I made a big shot, and I let him know how I feel. But it’s nothing personal with Paul. Paul’s a good guy.” Nice to see the rook (17 points, 14 rebounds) emerging as a leader in his first season. Can’t say the same for Noah or Brewer, but give ‘em time.
Now if the Hawks win again tonight …

Things I thought I’d never hear myself say for $1000
Can’t wait for that hawks game tonight
April 28th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Al Horford is a rookie — shut your trap and just play the damn game.
When is the Raptors game, 7pm? So I have about three more hours of commenting on this site until June? Oh boy …
April 28th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
What the hell was Pierce going to do to Al? Walking towards the bench you know that he was pulling a Derick Lee (hoping a teammate stayed between him and Chris Young.).
Did anyone else see the hard foul that Pierce took in game 1? He got up, and brushed his shoulders off, just like Hov told him to!
Look, Paul, I’m sorry you got stabbed, its terrible. The thing is, just because you got stabbed, that doesn’t give you any street cred, at all. Just last year he was a malcontent, overwieght jumpshooter, and now he is part of the Boston 3 Party. So now he has the balls to try and walk to Horford, who by the way has accomplished the same amount in his career that Pierce has in his. Nothing.
I can’t stand that guy
April 28th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Ugh…KG has talked more shit in three games than Horford has all season. But Horford gets called out. If I had a dollar for every person that said “Pierce is gonna go crazy in Game 4″ I wouldn’t have to work anymore. Here’s to hoping he puts up another below-average game.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
The Hawks get lucky and will one game. I don’t think that gives Al Hortford, a rookie, the right to say anything to any Celtics players. Even Brian Scalabrine.
Shut up and play ball. You might just win more than one game in this series.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Anyone know what that sign was? Pierce tossed up three fingers and what looked like a zero. What is that about?
The gated community in Boston he lives in?
April 28th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
@Tribal – they didn’t get lucky. They’re not better than the celtics, but that game wasn’t flukey. They ran up and down the court and wore down the Celtics. No luck involved.
I’m a little sick of this “he’s a rookie, he can’t talk yet” BS. This isn’t baseball, with its stupid “unwritten rules” thing. C’mon.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Maybe I should clarify – I don’t advocate what Horford did. When he was doing it, I was wincing like crazy. I just don’t think it needs to be made into such a big deal. As I said before, anyone will tell you that KG is one of the biggest shit-talkers in the world, and we’ve all read about some of the stuff that is said on the court. Horford got too fired up and went too far. It’s gonna be okay.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
I love trash talk. Keep it up.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I believe that 30 sign was how many doughnuts he had that morning.
So anyone else getting GTA 4 at midnight tonight? I probably should just wait until after work tomorrow, but dammit I can’t wait.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
@atlantasportsfan- You’re right. It wasn’t a fluke win, but I have a hard time seeing the Hawks winning another one. Also, this is playoff basketball so it’s expected that this guys will get fired up. I love it when this kind of stuff happens. What I was saying is why would Hortford want to give anyone on Boston extra motivation to play hard and win.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Following this guy’s lead, i got the Nuggets at +5 and the Hawks at +9.5
How’s this for a lead-in to the Hawks – FNL on some channel called “universl HD.” It’s the episode where Riggins gets his ass kicked at the bar, and Saracen and Julie are hanging out, fall asleep, and she has to go home after like 1 am. He tells her he loves her. They breakup shortly after.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
@Tribal – I agree with you there. I don’t think the Hawks will win another one either, but they’ve provided the rest of the league with a formula: run.
I thought the same thing when Horford went off: “Why does he want to give them any motivation?” But Pierce doesn’t seem like the type of guy that would get motivated by something like that. Garnett, yes…but not Pierce or Ray Allen – that’s just my observation. Of course, if Pierce goes for 35 tonight, we’ll never hear the end of it.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
@Coop – what’s GTA?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
missing the first hour to watch gossip girl
(ducks)
April 28th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
someone please alert me if anything crucial goes down early
April 28th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Ernie Johnson had an apt description of the Hawks: “Showed up to the playoff party fashionably late, but in style nonetheless…”
April 28th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
@ Atl: Grand Theft Auto
@TBL: I hope it’s for Blake Lively
April 28th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Grand Theft Auto
April 28th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
I definitely recognize that gang sign. It’s not a zero symbol as much as it is the way one would hold a garlic shaker.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Ray Allen with a block and a three
KG with a steal and dunk
full court press?
WTF?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Any Celtics fan who bitches about Horford need only watch their own bench during games. They’re completely obnoxious.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
damn, another block, this one by Perkins
what the hell fast break was that by ATL?
Boston wants blood tonight
April 28th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
An ugly one.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
nice nomo
April 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
These, my friends, are the maddening Atlanta Hawks I know and love. They win Game 3 by being aggressive on defense, and running as much as possible, avoiding the half-court set where Boston is suffocating on defense.
So far in Game 4? They are playing tentatively on defense, not running at all (and when they do, it looks like they’ve never run before), and they try to play one-on-one in a half court set. Perfect microcosm of the entire season.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
She’s come virtually out of nowhere and, as a screenwriter once wrote, ‘eats the screen‘
/anticipates a flurry of nasty remarks
April 28th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
if the hawks are going to rely on josh smith 19 footers all night .. whoa, had to stop typing on that Smith block! wow
April 28th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Sooooo Josh Smith is OK at blocking shots.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I’ll eat her screen.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
2nd in the league in blocks, and he’s 6-9. If he could develop any kind of offensive game, he’d be unreal.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
I’ll vote for either presidential candidate that enacts federal law requiring the immediate execution of anyone at a baseball game talking on their cell, and waving incessantly at the camera.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
pierce got fined 25k for a “menacing gesture”
still wondering what the heck that hand signal was after Horford woofed at him
April 28th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Josh Smith at blocking > Rajon Rondo at making laypus/dunks.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
This is looking like games 1 & 2…the Hawks have some flashes of athleticism (Smith’s blocks), but the C’s keep hitting daggers almost everytime down the floor, and keep a 8-10 point cushion.
I hope I’m wrong.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Josh Childress, future Cav. Nice.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
I kinda like Childress, Nick…
April 28th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
@atl: You should. He’s fucking awesome. He’s a RFA this summer, though. I’m hoping the Cavs grab him. I don’t think Atlanta realizes how sweet this guy is.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
That’s Kevin Garnett, your Defensive Player of the Year!!
/sarcasm
April 28th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
@Nick – oh, ok. Thought you were being sarcastic. He’s my favorite player on the team. The Hawks do realize it, I think. He’s Woodson’s favorite player, supposedly. Of course, Woodson might not be around…
But they tried hard to sign he and Josh Smith before the season started, but couldn’t get a deal done. Now they’re both making a name for themselves in the playoffs. Just another dumbass decision by the Hawks front office.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
“If I’m dead, you all have been dead for weeks.”
- Dwight Shrute
nice rally by the hawks
2 on KG … hoping for a 3rd early in the 2nd qtr
April 28th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I always laugh when Dick Stockton says “Zaza Pachulia, from Georgia – the republic, not the state.” Like anyone would mistake him for a Savannah native or something.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
yo ATL what do you think of boog scambi? he’s the play by the play guy for the braves the last couple years? to me, he’s the best hometown play by play guy anywhere in baseball scully included.. really sharp dude knows his baseball.. u like him?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
@atl: +/- isn’t the be-all end-all stat, but Childress came in, played 5:56, grabbed 5 boards, and had a +/- of +16. Pretty sick.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
@Cortes – I hear ya brother…Sciambi’s the shit, man. I had heard good things about him before he came, and was weary because I liked the old TBS guys (I know…I was born and raised here, can’t help it–although Skip Caray is a total douchebag in person). But Sciambi is the real deal. Very knowledgeable, knows when to talk and when to keep quiet, good sense of humor, doesn’t take himself too seriously. There was (is) a rumor going around that he might leave for a NY job since he’s from there though…hope that doesn’t happen
April 28th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
@Nick – I know…I’ve been noticing all year, hoping that others didn’t notice. And he seems to be there at every loose ball. I heard someone say (I can’t remember who) that you can tell Childress was taught the right way to play, because he has a good sense for which way the ball is going to carom off the rim and he’s there to get the rebound
April 28th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
it won’t.. he did a radio show down in miami for a while down here, got to him known pretty well.. he isn’t going anywhere.. he was offered the mets and marlins radio jobs (he was marlins radio guy in 2003) before the atlanta job and turned down both..
April 28th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Boog is really good because he doesn’t think that grit is the most important characteristic of a professional baseball player.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
@atl: Nah, I’ve been on him for 2 years. I want the Cavs to get him and David Lee, then we’re getting rings.
I like how Fratello goes, “There’s Childress doing the little things that won’t show up in the boxscore, grabbing that loose ball, and finding the open man.” Yeah Coach, that’s actually called a “rebound” and an “assist.” It’ll show up in the boxscore.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
True, Fetch9 – I meant to say that too…he’s the first (or at least one of the first) play by play guys that has embraced some of the newer-wave stats. Seems to be part of the “next generation” of play by play guys
April 28th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
@ fetch LOL.. he’s a really good baseball guy.. one of the only announcers who reads baseball prospectus on a regular basis and has broken down OPS, OPS+, EQA bb/9.. just really smart, i wish more play by play guys were like him rather than the gasbagging of joe morgan and jon miller
April 28th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
@Nick – as much as it pains me to say it, Childress would be perfect for the Cavs because he doesn’t need plays run for him to contribute. And yes, I laughed out loud when Fratello said that, thinking the same thing…
Oh, and Ted Turner made an appearance??? What the hell?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Fuck KG with that bullshit.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
shit is getting hot! love it!
KG just got his third on that blatant shove
April 28th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
if the hawks pull this off, they get their own post, independent of ballin’
a lot to love about this team right now
April 28th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Who was it that elbowed KG in the chest a few years ago and then KG backed down like a little girl?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
KG needs to do that to Zaza Pachulia? Really??? I’m really losing respect for KG in this series. First, he’s sucked on defense, and now this??
April 28th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
man pachulia really got in his face .. garnett your a pussy
April 28th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
No idea, but im surprises zazu put up a fight like that
April 28th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
this may have been the best first half of hoops i’ve seen in the playoffs – and i was watching a riveting episode of gossip girl half the time
April 28th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
@TBL
have you seen any of the magic-raptors? also a really good game.. 60-60 3:25 left in the 3rd..
April 28th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
It was Anthony Peeler.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
KG’s all elbow and fag.
F Boston.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
wait – did KG get a tech or foul for that elbow?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
All 3 of my roommates hopped all over the Celtics bandwagon this year. Im finding a lot of sports related reasons not to like them to be honest.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Throw it up to him! Smoove can jump higher than anyone (except #23)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Tech
April 28th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
wow, nice find Mike
Big Peeler fan when he was with the Lakers … i thought he was the 2nd coming of Nick at Night
April 28th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Nick – So KG is still on the floor with 3 fouls? Risky
April 28th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
on the cbs sports gameline it says garnett only has 2 personal fouls.. u guys sure its 3?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Orlando/Raptors isn’t on TV up north
wow, Childress skying for a nasty dunk
damn
April 28th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
just 2. tech’s don’t count as personal.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
techs*
April 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
TBL, it’s on channel 412 in Manhattan.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
i thought KG had 2 in the first qtr – Doc Rivers made mention in between qtrs … i thought a tech counted as a personal?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
@ TBL its not on 601, NBA Tv?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Hah. More Atlanta “fans” in here than in the whole state of Georgia. I know, I live in it.
Celts win by 15 or more. Book it.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
@SSI – that’s a tired joke, man. Get some new material.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
although keep saying book it. i love that saying.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Both these games are great. If the hawks win tonight, there will be more bandwagon hawks fans out there than bandwagon celtics fans.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Wasn’t meant as a joke.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
musta been confused with the collegiate ranks.
Bibby’s play tonight reminds me of the days he terrorized D Fish and Ron Harper during the Lakers/Kings classics
April 28th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
@ Atlantasportsfan: one of my buddies just said Josh Childress was terrible. I will copy and paste your response if you wish…
April 28th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
it’s easyyyyyyy to root against the Celtics. a lot of whining from these little bitches tonight. pierce and KG are the ringleaders
Dick Stockton – man, this guy is a dinosaur. loved when he was paired with Heinson he was great in the 80s … can’t believe he’s still around.
what a block on the rondo dunk attempt! great, great half
April 28th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
@Fetch9 – good one…any facts to back that up? If they know basketball they know he’s good. He’s not top tier or anything, but he’s damn good.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
@ATL….I might have missed it, but where in NYC is Sciambi rumored to be headed?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Name me an NBA team that’s NOT chock-full-o whiners.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Oh, and Fetch, tell your buddy I’ll sick Zaza on him
April 28th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Toronto needs to start considering Hack-a-Howard in the 4th.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
thats a Tommy point for TBL!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
@TSP – it was over the offseason. I think it was the Yankees? Did they have someone leave or something? I don’t remember. Just remember it was NY, because he’s from there.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
@ Atl: I just about flipped out on him cause he is just a moron. He also thinks Danny Green should be a first round NBA pick, and that Torii Hunter is a top 20 MLB player. SO I guess I shouldn’t be too shocked.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
For once, Zaza’s gigantic brow came in handy when he went nose to nose with KG. Seriously, he has a caveman’s brow.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Wow – Torii Hunter? If this guy ever wants to gamble on sports please put him in touch with me. I could earn a living off of him
April 28th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
boog technically is from philly.. he grew up a mike schmidt fan and his wiki page says he was born in philly.. not saying that the NY job wasn’t offered, because the mets radio job absolutley was.. just saying..
April 28th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
is Irish at the Magic game?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Well to be fair with the Hunter thing all 4 of us are all pretty big Twins fans, and all of my roommates are from Minnesota, so that has something to do with it, but they also say things like they’d rather have Hunter at the plate with the bases loaded than Barry Bonds, so take that for what it’s worth.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
i dont think i’d go hack-a-howard..he’s 7-10 from the line 2nite
April 28th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
The Mets radio play-by-play guy left and they hired some stiff, wish they hired Boog. YES rotates 20 announcers so maybe he was up for a job there. SNY prob has the best baseball announcers out there, headed by Gary Cohen, that guy IS the Mets. Pretty sure Mike McCarthy, the former Mets radio guy left for Philly, he is OK. Boog is solid though.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
@Cortes – then I could be totally wrong. Not like it’d be the first time
@Fetch – I have a friend from South Dakota who grew up a Twins fan, so I understand the Torii Hunter fandom, don’t worry. Great player, sure, but I could think of 10 guys I’d rather have at the plate with the bases loaded
April 28th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Man, Scalabrine should have been suspended for leaving the bench during an altercation. Letter of the law, letter of the law.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
@Atl: Im from ND and I’m a HUGE Twins fan and I was the happiest person on earth when Anaheim tossed 90 mil his way. That’s an extra first round pick they can spend a million less than everybody on.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I don’t, Hef. As a fan of the opposing team, I want both teams to be at full strength…and we all know the C’s are decidedly average with out Big Red.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
@fetch just curious.. when they traded johan for gomez and other prospects what was your reaction at the time? underwhelmed considering the yanks were dangling hughes and the sox with lester? or no? and whats the feeling now, 20 games in?
April 28th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
TBL, if not a gang sign (ala the Van Buren Boys), the more innocent option might be the sign for “asshole”.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
@Fetch – what part? My buddy lived in Fargo (was born in SD, but raised in Fargo). Lived down the street from Jonny Lang (if that was the guitarist from ND…I think that’s who it was)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
OH shit! Looks like Perkins and Marvin Williams could be suspended for game five for stepping onto the floor during that KG thing.
I think that’d be BS (based on what TNT just showed us)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
+1 nomo, “There’s a street gang named after President Martin Van Buren?”
April 28th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
@Hef: If he was off the bench, they’ll see it on video, and he should get suspended.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Interesting that TNT pointed out that Marvin Williams and Kendrick Perkins stepped on the floor during the Zaza-KG fight…I’d probably take that trade-off if they got suspended. Perkins has been the only low-post defensive presence for the Celtics throughout this series
April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Marvin sucks, atl.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
@ cortes: I was quite underwhelmed. I would rather have had just Phil Hughes (although he isn’t really doing a ton now), but if Gomez was hitting 9th for them I think it would be a lot better. And Humber and Mulvey are both going to be solid and Guerra has the potential to be great, but the Twins need hitters. At last check I believe they were 13th in the AL in offense.
@ Atl: I’m from Bismarck, but I go to college in Grand Forks. And yeah it’s Johnny Lang, I actually haven’t listened to him much but what I’ve heard is pretty good.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
@atl: in the interest in having a competitive and even series, then fine, I will suspend my punishment of Scalabrine until after the playoffs. I recognize his value to the Celtics. I’m so tired of his special treatment he gets–the Scalabrine Rules–he doesn’t even have to wear a uniform during the game. He gets to look dapper in his street clothes before, after and during the time he dominates on the court.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Ballgame.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
@Nick – I know.
@Hef – AND he gets to choose which team he wants to play for, based on his irish heritage? BS, man. Opposing teams even labeled the Scalabrine-friendly refs “Scalawags.”
April 28th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
@fetch….were you surprised that trade went down without the Twins getting Fernando Martinez? As a Mets fan I was shocked they did not have to give him up for Johan.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
what would happen if both benches cleared during a fight??
April 28th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
They would stagger the suspensions like the old Heat v. Knicks/ Van Gundy ankle biting episode.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
@TSP no way man.. martinez is the best outfield prospect in the game.. he’s off limits, theres no way they trade him for johan and the twins knew that..
April 28th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
It’d be announcers vs. announcers. I’d take ‘Nique and Steve Smith over Tommy Heinsohn and whoever else they have.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
@ TSP: What I read is that they actually preferred Gomez to Martinez. Whether it’s right or wrong I don’t know, but the Twins really like guys who are uber athletic, and Gomez is a better athlete than Martinez. Martinez and Gomez’s PECOTAs look pretty similar, if that’s your thing. And Gomez will be a much better defensive player than Martinez.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Tommy Heinsohn can ball, atl. You betta ax somebody.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
i think the celts other announcer is bob cousy..dont forget the hawks also have dennis scott who does the radio
April 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
@fetch.. isn’t it interesting that gomez and martinez’s PECOTA looks exactly the same and martinez is only 19.. that kid is gonna be a stud man..
April 28th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
@ fetch…also probably the biggest factor is that Gomez is major league ready, you can’t trade Johan and get back zero MLB caliber starters if your the Twins. Gomez is definitely more athletic, and right now is better defensively. The Mets organization is in love with Martinez though, I have learned not to get too excited about their “can’t miss” prospects.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Jay Bruce would like a word with you.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
@ Cortes: I hear ya, but let me quote Kevin Goldstein (BP’s resident prospect guy for those who don’t know)
April 28th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Justin Upton isn’t considered a prospect anymore, right? Okay then.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Jordan Schaefer wants in the conversation. Just give him a minute while he goes to the bathroom with a gigantic needle.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
The Tebata mentioned in this article is a Yankees prospect, and will be traded for a big starting pitcher come the July deadline. Roy Oswalt maybe?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Who wants to be the first to say goodbye to Mike NYC since the Raptors are out? Not it!
April 28th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
+1 Atl
April 28th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
just a random prediction
April 28th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
schaefer and bruce are both probably ahead of martinez.. i jumped the gun a bit on that.. i meant more potential wise because he is only 19..
April 28th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
The Celtics are slowly pulling away, and the Hawks don’t have an answer. Oh well…
April 28th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
3rd qtr JUST like the Pistons/76ers
defense does it
April 28th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I think I would take Martinez over Shaefer because really it seems like his breakout season had a lot to do with his substance abuse. Although I’ve read articles where doctors have been quoted as saying HGH doesn’t do much, if at all, for baseball players. Colby Rasmus has to be thrown into the best prospect convo as well.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
This may be a bit premature, but Dan Haren has a no-no going through 2/3 of an inning.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Same as last night with Det-Phila the better team takes control in the third quarter.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Wow TBL, sorry for stepping on your toes there.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Fetch9 beat me to it – Schaefer does appear to be a classic case of HGH-induced performance. Came from nowhere all of a sudden, and then started slipping precipitously right before the steroid thing came out (because he was presumably off of them at that point).
April 28th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
@fetch.. back at you, this from baseball prospectus 2008 “For Martinez to even hold his own at AA is an impressive feat. If there’s any actual bad news here it’s that he’s clearly not much of a center fielder, so the bar for bat has to be set higher. Time and potential are still on his side in the biggest of ways”
and about goldstein saying that martinez repeating a level being troubling.. i don’t put much stock in that.. hanley ramirez also repeated a level in the minors and BP didn’t like him at all.. if you go through the archives you can read joe sheenan ripping hanley at the time of the trade.. some of these guys like hanley are so good that they good bored against inferior competition
April 28th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Until you jinxed it, Hef. Way to go.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Hef don’t talk about it you’ll jinx it!
April 28th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
@ cortes: Touche. I think Martinez will be a really good player so I’m not arguing at all, but if there is one thing the Twins have had good success at it’s trading for players that aren’t highly thought of and turning them into studs, or at least seeing the potential they have. That being said, Gardenhire (or someone) needs to teach Delmon Young and Carlos Gomez a little strike zone recognition
April 28th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
@fetch…good call on Gomez’s plate discipline he swings at EVERYTHING.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I reverse jinxed him. He just hit an rbi double.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Attention Channel-Hoppers:
Since everyone loves a good tv quote, WKRP is currently on the AmericanLife channel (whatever that is), featuring one of the all-time great’s: “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Oh and Cortes one thing I forgot: I don;t think Martinez repeating a level in itself is troubling, but if he struggles there has to be some concern.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I repeated 9th grade like 13 times and I did a little bit better each time.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
@ fetch generally i’d agree with you that’s a big sign of trouble to struggle in both levels, though there are certainly examples of that not being a crippling disadvantage (see uggla, dan) but yea i’d agree.. by the way for the next decade would you rather have garza or delmon?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Delmon for sure since apparently Garza has some pretty bad arm troubles that just came to light. And since the Twins have had tons of pitching studs that they never traded, I’m wondering if the fact they finally traded one means they knew about the injury.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Also this is the most civilized conversation I’ve ever had with a U fan. I gather you’re a Marlins fan as well?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
nice little run here by Atl … BUT YOU CANT LEAVE RAY ALLEN OPEN
dagger
April 28th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
yep.. all miami except pro football, i like the packers.. but yea marlins, canes, heat, panthers, and throw kimbo in there since he’s a miami boy lol
April 28th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaooooow. D Ho had another 20-20?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Generally when talking to a U fan I get stabbed before I get done with my first sentence. Can’t say I know any Marlins fans. This Hawks/Celtics series has the feel of a close 2/15 game in the NCAA tourney.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
@fetch oh come on don’t throw the U under the bus like that.. were not that bad.. though if you were an FSU fan, im not sure if i could have talked to you.. and btw CRM is a marlins fan too.. were everywhere!
April 28th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
He might be the worst guy left in the playoffs to leave open in that spot, except maybe Peja.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
eddie house is going to get berated for taking that awful shot
April 28th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Nothing beats the running, baby hook just made by Joe Johnson.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Marlins fans make up nearly .04% of all TBL commenters.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
@TBL: Breaking News–Zito to the Bullpen.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Brian Sabean: worst GM in baseball?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Barry Zito is a genius. You get more money and then talk your employers into giving you less work? Genius.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I’m training my son to be a backup FG kicker in the NFL. League minimum is like $400,000 and he won’t get hurt.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
@ fetch.. hes terrible man.. couldnt agree more.. not only did he give out that ridiculous contract to zito but he had the best player in the history of the game a decade plus and surrounded him with edgar alonzo and pedro feliz every year.. just a complete imbecile
April 28th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Unbelievable plummet by Zito.
/Mike Hampton
April 28th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
@Hef – You aren’t Hef Gramatica are you?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
wow, crowded thread tonight. Anyone seen Mike NYC?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
How does moving him to the bullpen help anything? They are not going anywhere anyway, let him stay in the rotation and work his way through what is wrong.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Yes, ignore all the references to my being jewish. I’m actually italian.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
ATL up by 5.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Bullpen catcher is not a bad gig either, Hef.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
are the hawks really gonna win this?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
i just hope zito works out well as a setup man for brian wilson .. i got him closing on 2 fantasy teams
some rally by ATL. they have heart that philly didn’t have. joe johnson just shook up allen and popped a 3
setting up for a nice finish, i need a piece of cake
April 28th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
@TSP: Fucks your knees up, fer serial, though.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Carl Pavano thinks Barry Zito is a f’n soldier.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
I bet Nick knows a lot of ways to fuck up his knees.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
this is that hot after-hours spot you never knew went off on mondays.
i think mike just left with some model-type. who knows when we’ll see him again
April 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
@ cortes: don’t forget about the greatest trade in MLB history.
/hyperbole
April 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
good point Nick, as someone who has hurt knees after playing catcher in softball I should have thought of that.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
@TBL: He just lost a bet to irish. He’s not allowed to post for a month.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
April 28th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Huge rebound by Tito!!
April 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
damn me and my awful quoting abilities
April 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
nice shot selection KG
April 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
lol yea forgot about that.. what a retard.. giving up liriano and boof! for piersysnki are you fucking kidding me? seriously?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
It’s embarrassing, fetch. We’ve been meaning to talk to you about it. That’s 2. Don’t get to 3. You dig?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
One month seems about right.
Joe Johnson > God
April 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
the hawks need to go back to the jerseys with the actual hawk on them…like mookie blaylock era…they showed them during a flashback to the last magic series win in 96 and they are NICE
April 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
21-7 in the 4th? Insane
April 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
who was saying that Joe Johnson wasn’t a star? *cough*Hef*cough
April 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
@ Hef. I’ll try to do better next time.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
joe johnson is unstoppable this qtr – why isn’t Rondo on him? did dick stockton just say he had 40?
that block by Smith on KG was unreal
some game
April 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Who knew Joe Johnson would be such a clutch playoff performer.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
good to have no mike in NYC for a while around here.. i think we should talk about how great le batard is and how much lupica sucks just to piss him off
April 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
earlier on these boards someone was saying joe johnson wasnt a superstar..oops
April 28th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
@fetch – how do you do a backward quote? I’m not even mad, I’m amazed
April 28th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Joe Johnson is cutting up the #1 defensive team this century*
*Fact taken from Bill Simmons statistical guide to the NBA
April 28th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
a mookie blaylock reference, nicely done … what’s next, Steve Smith? Koncak? Tree Rollins?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Fuck the heck are you talking about? I said he wasn’t worth 70 million, not that he wasn’t good.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
NBA.com’s got Smith at 32
April 28th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
@ TBL, Sidney Moncrief anyone?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Sorry, Hef – it was Stats Papageorgio. My apologies and I hope you have buttsecks with the missus tonight.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
everyone makin big shots…hell of a finish
April 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
I think Johnson is just being selfish…
April 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
@ Clown: I have no idea. That really F-ed up what I thought was a pretty decent joke.
As someone cheering against the Celtics, KG doesn’t scare me at all in crunch time.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Haren just walked Berkman to break up his no-no with no outs in the 5th.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Clown, refresh my memory. Are you an Ohio guy too?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
+1 to Clown for teaching me how to spell a word that my gal refuses to acknowledge.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Fetch, could not agree more. I am sure C’s fans would like to see Pierce be more of a factor right now.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
not trying to sound like a homer but the magic look much better than anyone else in the east…and thats without hedo playing well at all…and the 3 pointers being off
April 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Who’d Pierce want the foul on? KG?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Dudes, one game does not a series make.
Although he’s probably better than Kobe at this point.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
A superstar* make, I mean.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Nope, Hef. Born in NYC. raised in Texas. Can’t stand the armpit of the US.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
atlanta hasn’t rocked this hard since the thrashers….no … the braves …. the Dennis Scott, Brian Oliver, Kenny Anderson trio shot the Jackets to the Final 4?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
So how many do the Lakers score tonight? 180? 190?
My favorite development of the entire season has to be Charles Barkley consistently calling it “Enver”
April 28th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
/fixed
April 28th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
@JEFFaJAX: I would look good against the Raptards at this point. Sorry.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
That’s nothing. I’ve been calling them the Allas Mavericks with Irk Nowitzki for years.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
I would say the original tomohawk chop Braves captivated Atlanta more then Ramblin’s Wreck, Mark Lemke was an endearing fellow.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@Hef – that may well be, but I’d never vote for your for governor of Alabama
April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
What.a.game.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
*Ramblin’
April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I’m watching Man of Fire since the Celtics were up 16-3, and the Hawks win? What the fuck happened? Did Denzel kill KG too or something?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
perhaps
April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Who’s the jackass?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
So you were lying when you supported my public housing and extended school calendar plans?
April 28th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
fixed.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Shot in the dark here: the Pepsi Center will not be rocking as hard as Phillips was.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Be back in a minute. I’m going to go mix some pain killers with booze. If I don’t post in the next ten minutes, call 911.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Knew I forgot something, thanks Nomo.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Sorry, I meant to say President of the Alabama fan club. Those guys rock.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Marcus Camby represents the Nuggz in those NBA commercials? Really? They couldn’t have gotten AI or a sober Melo? Still, not half as ridiculous has Mike Bibby on those commercials.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
I believe that’s walfredo’s brother
April 28th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
I just think its funny they picked Marcus Camby for the whole 82 games thing because well…hes never played the full 82 in his career and only went over 70 twice in 12 seasons
April 28th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Akers/Uggets is a complete buzz kill after the Awks/Eltics.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Are Nene and Ronnie Turiaf the same person?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
That’s it! Nene is Turiaf. Turiaf is Nene!
April 28th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Oh no, not Reggie Miller.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Did anyone call 911? I feel woozy…good woozy.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I’m back. I had to quit typing for awhile, and then had to recover. I can’t fucking believe this. I’m just glad for the team that the rest of the nation is getting to see how good they are (they’re playing way over their head right now, but still)…It’s funny – don’t the celtics look like an Old-Timer team or something? They’re so slow. Gotta give it to KG for hitting some shots down the stretch, but he also f’d up a lot throughout the game.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Oh, and it was me and Nick that were saying Joe Johnson isn’t a star. I, specifically, said he shrinks in the spotlight. Of course, one game doesn’t make JJ a top-notch star, but I’d be confident with him in crunch time from now on.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
No, Hef. Nobody loves you. Sorry.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
try this game out….take turns naming black NBA players who do not have a tattoo
April 28th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Kevin Durant?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
@doug: can we narrow it to dudes without tats on their neck?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Dwight Howard?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Derek Fisher?
April 28th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Reggie Miller just told us Tyler Perry’s House of Payne is funny. Clearly going to watch it now. Ass. Simmons made a good point in his last column, most ads for a show that I will never, ever watch.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
@Doug: The Heat’s Jason Williams? Wait… he’s all tatted up. My bad.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
great play by Kobe going into this last commercial break.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Nuggets are done…game over. They actually look less into this game tonight than the last one. I didn’t think that was possible.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
I wonder what it feels like to know you are going to get paid more money than you could spend and there was nothing your employer could do about it, except cut you, and even then they would still have to pay you.
/Carmelo Anthony
April 28th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I actually think the nuggets are allergic to defense. They seem like they get ill, sleepy and lethargic after trying for about thirty seconds and then abandon it.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
hell jsut froze over, the nuggets made two stops in a row
April 28th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
This game interests me about 0%
April 28th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Wow, what an amazing thread. Sorry I missed it. I read every comment. Here’s your winner of “Comment of the Day”.
Courtesy of “The Greek” Nick Papageorgio:
I like how Fratello goes, “There’s Childress doing the little things that won’t show up in the boxscore, grabbing that loose ball, and finding the open man.€ Yeah Coach, that’s actually called a “rebound†and an “assist.€ It’ll show up in the boxscore.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Ha I missed that. That’s awesome.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:06 am
Wouldn’t you rather these guys just not say anything that repeat the same retarded bullshit over and over?
April 29th, 2008 at 12:07 am
I honestly can’t think of one black player that has none. Pretty sure D.Howard does. D.Fisher….maybe he is the guy??
April 29th, 2008 at 12:07 am
That’s one reason Harry Kalas is great, and Chris Wheeler sucks balls. Kalas doesn’t need to talk constantly, and Wheeler does, and is a moron.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:07 am
That’s one reason Harry Kalas is great, and Chris Wheeler sucks balls. Kalas doesn’t need to talk constantly, and Wheeler does, and is a moron.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:10 am
actually I am pretty sure Dwight Howard has none…I can’t find any in google images
Looks like ZBuckner is the winner. And the rumor is he LOVES girls with bush.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:13 am
Does that mean I get Doug Gottlieb’s wife? I’m impartial, but I’ll take what I can get.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:13 am
He also apparently loves double posting.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Melo on Kobe? I smell disaster.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Ironic…
April 29th, 2008 at 12:17 am
Yeah, it’s habit from instant messaging. My bad.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Luke Walton just looked pissed that he actually had to check into the game
April 29th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Tim Duncan doesn’t have any tattoos. Fed-Ex my prize at once.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Doesn’t he have a couple on his back or something?
April 29th, 2008 at 12:21 am
if your life was one line between the following fight involving the current Nuggets/Lakers game which would you choose…
(rules: straight street fight, anything goes but no weapons, 1 on 2)
Kenyon Martin
versus
any 2 players in this game of your choice but they have to be white
April 29th, 2008 at 12:21 am
ZBuck, good call. I am disqualified.

April 29th, 2008 at 12:24 am
@Gonzo
Duncan was also the first player I thought of.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:27 am
What’s with the Nuggz playing D?
April 29th, 2008 at 12:37 am
@ Doug: Even though the Lakers would be throwing out two professional athletes to the Nuggets’ one, I think you almost have to go with K-Mart. It would have to be Luke Walton plus somebody, but who? Vujacic?
April 29th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Fetch…I guess Walton and Gasol. And you know I would take K-Mart and not think twice about it.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:41 am
Doug doesn’t care about black people.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:41 am
what about kleiza and radmonovic? I would probably take those two over k-mart
April 29th, 2008 at 12:43 am
and Go Hawks, that was a sick game!
April 29th, 2008 at 12:45 am
I was thinkin it had to be two guys from the Lakers, although I don’t think that changes it much.
April 29th, 2008 at 12:47 am
Does anybody know when they announce the time for game 6? Everywhere I can find says TBD right now
April 29th, 2008 at 12:55 am
The Beard, I am sure they are waiting to see if the Lakers clinch tonight (if not, they would play Wed night making it 3 games) The Cavs/Wiz are also on Wed night. I can see Cavs at 6 and Celts at 830.
April 29th, 2008 at 1:01 am
That shot by Kobe was redonkulous
April 29th, 2008 at 1:06 am
@Gonzo, I don’t really care about the game in Boston, I am stoked to get to go to another playoff game here in the Atl on Friday and I was looking for the start time
April 29th, 2008 at 1:18 am
Kobe’s dominating. You don’t normally see that out of a guy barely in the top 10.
/ Nick P
