Leitch was clearly unprepared for this, too. Totally ambushed.
Anyway, “Buzz” is what happens when you combine immeasurable arrogance and a mile-wide generational gap of understanding. These guys have no clue what sites like Deadspin, TBL, and others are really about.
Maybe that’s apparent to the average HBO viewer, but maybe not. It doesn’t really matter in the end anyway. Blogs aren’t going away.
Braylon Edwards expression is that of, “I didn’t know white people could be so fucking crazy.”
–
This is now the second time I’ve seen this. Costas just comes off as a sniveling jerk. He didn’t used to be this way.
–
I love how when Will knows WC Heinz, Buzzy just starts bumbling and mumbling. He acts like a coked-out methhead. Even better, “I watched your blog today.” Classic.
–
If MSM is going to do something like this, shouldn’t they educate themselves as to the difference between a blog and a comment?
Doesn’t it remind you of the oaf friend from high school or college that got louder, more destructive and more defiant once we all realized, “Hey, he’s kind of bringing us all down.”
As you proverbially — or physically — walked away, his tones were most audible.
Will knew what was coming – meaning he was prepared for everyone to be against blogs – but what he couldn’t have been prepared for was the way in which Bissinger delivered his message. If you’re on a panel discussion you would at least expect it to start out as a discussion. Buzz just started in so violently and didn’t let up. What an asshole.
This was a good reminder to me. You can like an artist’s work without like the artist.
Buzz is a complete asshole. What is he so scared of? Is there some kind of danger with having people write pithy comments on the Web about sports? What about pithy comments about senior citizen Viagra popping has beens with dumb ass names like Buzz?
TBL – I have to admit that I grow tired of how in every interview you do, you have to whine about newspapers vs. blogs. That said, I can’t believe how Buzz and Costas are up in arms about this. I can only hope that I don’t act like an old crank in 30 years.
And did Costas try to equate Leitch’s work to going through someone’s garbage? Finally, good to see Buzz doing the “Fox News” approach to a panel discussion.
“Blogs are all about opinion, all about getting in your face, and the fact that people love them says they’re really not interested in facts, not interested in beautiful writing; they’re just interested in having our own opinions certified.”
Gee…doesn’t that sound EXACTLY like what Buzz did IN PERSON to Leitch?
I can’t believe that 10 years ago Costas was doing the NBA Finals, the Olympics, the World Series – he was everywhere. Then NBC jettisoned everything but the Kentucky Derby and he fell off the map. Now all we get from him is whining about MLB expanding the playoffs to include a wild card, interleague play, and now blogs. Hate Joe Buck all you want, but at least he isn’t a stodgy old man who wants baseball (and media) to go back to the 1920s.
One of the problems is that there is no ‘comment’ section in a printed newspaper. Millions of people will read an article about Salisbury leaving ESPN and say to themselves, something along the lines of, “Good luck managing a Denny’s, douchebag!” to anyone around after the reader has finished the article. Now, when it is read online instead of a newspaper, they can type that same sentiment and it goes to millions, instead of only the people within earshot. No difference in sentiment, only in audience.
I also love the entire schtick of the cursing buffoon that adds nothing railing against those that swear and add nothing. Douchebag!
buzz bissinger came off as a jealous, aging newspaper writer who thinks he will be replaced by a blogger and thus hates them. he also came off as someone that would argue with you all day even though he had no valid points. he would just keep getting louder and cut you off by yelling. what an ass. he looked real quick on his feet.
And why are people like Buzz equating the comment section solely to blogs? Guess what? Newspapers are going online, and most of them allow for comments on articles or commentaries. And what about ESPN Conversation? That is used just about everywhere on the .com (with the exception of Simmons, smart move there).
Maybe Buzz can get his side of the story published in Vanity Fair and he can get “Shattered Glass” star/robot Hayden Christiansen to play the Will Leitch part in an upcoming cable movie.
Wow. Leitch maybe was prepared, but damn that was a pile on. Costas asked loaded questions to make blogs look like piles of shit and Bissinger seems caught in the 70s. Love the Wiki page where it says he’s “mentally unstable.”
Good point, johndewar. Whatever he writes will undoubtedly have the original leading title of “Friday Night Lights: Blah blah blah”. Seems his go-to move.
Did anyone ever figure out if Costas and Edwards have the same agent? I remember TBL asked a few days ago. Why is he on stage? For that uninformed commenter VH1/ESPN vibe? I thought this event was critiquing that…
Bissinger acts like a caveman. He’s the unfunny Lewis Black. How embarrassing for the Ivy League.
So Buzz decides to decry the lack of civility on blogs by acting like a complete prick during what was supposed to be a debate. Nice debate technique to start by telling the other party that they are “full of shit”. What a tool.
There’s a comment section at the bottom of every Houston Chronicle article, where you can read about people blamming everything on illegal immigrants, Katrina evacuees, Big Oil, Quanell X, the mayor, traffic, and the Man. No one, however, holds the Chronicle or the Hearst Corporation responsible. And the Houston Chronicle has the largest reader base of any Hearst paper…
Wow, does that count as internet bullying? Does anyone else know how you watch a blog? I mean, I know how to listen to a newspaper and read a radio, but I was confused when Buzz said he watched Deadspin.
Buzz and Costas made me sad. I hope I’m not like that when I’m older.
Leitch looked unprepared, like he wasn’t expecting to get attacked. Why would he?
Braylon looked, well, what the hell was Braylon Edwards doing there?
And just in case Buzz reads comments aloud in front of millions of people again…
Buzz is a fucking douchebag who puts on a clown’s mask and fist-fucks underaged Thai boys in blackface, and afterward, he masturbates onto the back of a mini-pony while getting sodomized by a transgendered midget with a porcelain dildo. My name is Dave Lozo, and my blog is located at lozo.blogspot.com. I could use the readership.
Also, Deadspin averages 270,000 hits per day. They are already at 328,000 today as I type this.
This whole set-up smells of the classic Bill Orielly/Fox News tactic: get one lefty pundit who is totally unprepared to ‘debate’ 3 rabid alpha-conservatives and call it a fair discussion.
Ask the people of Odessa about the awesomeness of journalistic integrity.
Has anyone asked yet just how much of an impact blogs and internet campaigns had on keeping his TV show (and those probable royalty checks) on the air?
Also what kills me about this is blogs like this one link to outside newspaper columns all the while giving their opinion as well…why can’t they just coexist?
Oh, and just because I want my screen name read for the Second Annual Version of this when they talk to TBL: Buzz has the intellect of a person who was a botched abortion of a pregnancy that was caused by Austrian incest
April 30th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I love the little intro piece, the guy in the dark on his computer, I bet he is a pedophile in his mom’s basement
April 30th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
fuck NOFX
April 30th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Buzz’s face = the Mrs. Doubtfire mask after the garbage truck hit it.
Or John Malcovich actually attempting the hair thing and gaining about 75lbs.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Wow. That’s really startling.
Leitch was clearly unprepared for this, too. Totally ambushed.

You know who didn’t look surprised when this was happening? Costas. That smarmy fucker knew what Buzz had in store for Leitch.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Doesn’t it remind you of the oaf friend from high school or college that got louder, more destructive and more defiant once we all realized, “Hey, he’s kind of bringing us all down.”

Then there was nothing.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
What a sanctimonious prick.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Buzz for president!!!! Of Afghanistan.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
The was Buzz was glaring down Leitch while being introduced was disturbing.

Hey TBL – I have a fantastic idea for your next media interview. You are going to need to get a spittle guard and earplugs.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
“You know who didn’t look surprised when this was happening? Costas. That smarmy fucker knew what Buzz had in store for Leitch.”
I agree and now have lost even more respect for the smarmy little dude.

seems like it woulda been pretty easy to defuse Buzz. the guy was all bluster…
April 30th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
BTW, from Leitch’s column, here are Buzz’s words:
“Blogs are all about opinion, all about getting in your face, and the fact that people love them says they’re really not interested in facts, not interested in beautiful writing; they’re just interested in having our own opinions certified.”
Gee…doesn’t that sound EXACTLY like what Buzz did IN PERSON to Leitch?

LOUD NOISES!!!!!!!
April 30th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
When did NoFX actually start their sonic romp?
April 30th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
+1 KC Resident – Braylon looked like he was ready to exit stage right about 90 seconds into that “discussion”.
@Tick – I’ve read your post about 5 times now, and I laugh harder each time I read it.
April 30th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Consider those questions finished!

Buzz’s wiki has been defaced.
April 30th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
What an ambush hack job. Nothing beats the “I’m just gonna interject…” as he and Costas so rudely walked all over Leitch’s fuckin’ INTRO.
Btw, Buzz… WC Heinz is dead. He has no current ability to invoke any moments.
April 30th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
wow i didnt know buzz went to philips academy….that explains a lot, fuckin prick…i’ve never read his book, and probably wont now.
April 30th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Who would deface such a proud mans wiki? For Shame…For Shame
/snicker

Also, I think BDD is funny, but Buzz’s comparision is just way off. Would he compare Katharine Hepburn to Sarah Silverman?

Jesus, when is buzz coming out with the revised version of Mein Kampf?
April 30th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
His wiki page gave me the best laugh I have had all day..I think there will be some be some major backlash over this..
April 30th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
I looked yesterday when you posted that but couldn’t find Costas’s agent. Leigh Steinberg reps Braylon.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Among all the statements Buzz Lightyear makes, the most inane is when he says “I may be over 50, but I am not that stupid.”
Yes, Buzz, you are. You are most definately THAT stupid.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Buzz is so douchey, but hearing Bob Costas say “fuck face” and “douche-bag” was the highlight of my day
April 30th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Wow, does that count as internet bullying? Does anyone else know how you watch a blog? I mean, I know how to listen to a newspaper and read a radio, but I was confused when Buzz said he watched Deadspin.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
sponge-worthy, exactly my thoughts. best part was listening to all the comments about Sean Salisbury. hysterical.

I find it interesting that in Deadspin’s quote of what Buzz said about blogs having bad grammar, he had a grammatical error himself.

Don’t forget, Backstage Passport is coming up!
