Ballin’: The Night the Clock Stood Still
NBA May 6th. 2008, 10:00am
New Orleans 102, San Antonio 84: Not something we thought we’d say, but the Spurs appear rattled. Tim Duncan got in David West’s face (for clapping!). Manu Ginobili got angry at the towel boy. Bruce Bowen’s repeated attempts to get in Chris Paul’s head have all failed. Saw the stat on TV this morning - of the 201 NBA teams that have faced an 0-2 deficit, only 13 have rallied to win. We’re on the verge of owing the Hornets a massive apology because we had no clue this young group was capable of reaching the conference finals. The Hornets made 10-of-17 three’s (Peja nailed five en route to 25 points) and Chris Paul continued his tremendous playoff run with 30 points, 12 assists, and one turnover.
Detroit 100, Orlando 93: It seems certain there will have to be a rule change in the offseason after that disastrous end to the third quarter. The most logical move - why not just do the play over? Still, the Magic had plenty of chances late in the fourth, including three shots when down a bucket with less than 20 seconds left. Let’s assume the Magic waltz in game three, and eek out game four. Did Orlando do enough in game two to make you think that they can steal one in Detroit? The Magic got tremendous play from the backcourt (Nelson and Evans were 12-23, including 7-for-12 from three for 35 points) won the rebounding battle (40-35), and made free throws (78 percent). And still lost.

still not impressed by Detroit. no way maxiell ever plays like that again in his career.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:04 am
The real malfunction was the Magic’s sputtering, stalling offense, which committed 19 turnovers for 22 Pistons points, nullifying the in-game improvements they made from their 91-72 loss to open the series
cant blame the clock screw up for the lose
check out this dunk though from Dwight on Theo Ratliff

May 6th, 2008 at 10:06 am
irish…dont worry, this is how the Cavs-Pistons series from last year started out. you gotta think Orlando will be a lot better on their own court with Tiger Woods courtside.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:06 am
What did Manu say to the towel boy? I was watching but I couldn’t read his lips. I hate the Spurs but I have a feeling it still goes 7, if they lose game 3 though it will be a sweep. Imagine if CP3 and West both have big games cuase so far its been either/or.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:06 am
When the home team wins the first two games, it is a virtual lock, going on to win the series 94.4 percent of the time.
i just want to add that i would like to ask Hedo what the fuck was he thinking with that shot at the end. WTF was that
He has been one of the best closers all year in the 4th quarter and he shoots up a fucking brick
Steve Javey used to be the top Ref in the league. That fuck gave Detroit 3 points for free
May 6th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Irish your boys played hard just took some bad shots at the end.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Two things…CP3 is for real (not that we have argued otherwise) and teh game management of the last 20 seconds of the Magic/Pistons game was horrendous at best…the shot selection was terrible…they were down two with 16 seconds left…run the clock down..set your shot…get the ball inside to Howard or at least find Hedo for an open shot…Stan Van Gundy looked pissed at his boys but did nothing to calm them down..fought with the ref during everytime out instead of settling the situation…just bad news..but it was glaring how bad the Magic need a PG..the difference was Billups and the Magic have nothing to stop him
May 6th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Irish - what did you expect Javey to do?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:09 am
yea, that’s the thing. chauncey knows he can post up or blow by jameer at will, and there’s really nothing they can do about it.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:09 am
such a hard game to watch last night. What was Orlando down, like 17 or something. Came out draining threes for once, but hey at least they scored over 80 points this game.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Trust me…as a Hornets fan I want the entire world to keep picking against them. Notice, they don’t play the “disrespect” card at all. They just go about the business of proving everyone wrong.
CP3 is playing like Bruce Bowen kicked his puppy or something. Something about all the greats — they play with a serious mean streak to them. And he’s got it.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:11 am
na, bowen just undercut CP3’s dog when making him jump for a treat.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:11 am
If you are not sure about the time in a situation like that just replay the last 5.1 seconds dont give a team a bucket its the playoffs get the shit right.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:12 am
@roeth- Joe Forte was shaking his head saying no basket, but Javey overruled him.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I would trade the entire Pistons roster for CP3. That kid is the next Isiah for certain. Oh and the Pistons still have to win a couple more. If anything you can take from this post season it is that home court has magically turned into the end all be all for getting calls and wins.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:15 am
TBL - I wouldn’t be so quick to count out San Antonio. If any team can come back from 2-0, it’s them. However, the Spurs are assholes, and I’m glad they’re losing. Duncan has always been a whiny bitch, but he never gets called out for it for some reason. So it’s somewhat gratifying to see them lose their cool.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:15 am
I don’t think they are allowed to take points off the board without definite knowledge of the time (such as when reviewing whether a shot beat the buzzer). In this case, without a clock to compare against, I think their hands were tied regardless of whether they personally thought it should count.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Screw you ATL, you’re outta here!
/Joe Crawford
May 6th, 2008 at 10:17 am
everyone bitches. LeBron is a crybaby, but Rasheed can cry like a 3-year old every time he gets a call against him and nobody says shit. Jamison looks like a punk every time he fouls. every fucking player does that shit, Mo Evans was bitching last night, Theo Ratliff was bitching last night…
i think we should just name the players who don’t complain, it’d be a lot quicker and easier.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:19 am
@roeth- it was a tough call for sure. Stan the man wasnt too happy about it last night. I have never seen so much spit come out of a man while talking to someone
May 6th, 2008 at 10:19 am
I’ll try and be a little bit nice to Irish today because nobody knows hard losses moreso than Cleveland fans.
Truth is Orlando did not deserve to win w/ their execution down the stretch.
Also don’t think of it as a 7 game series, think of it as a 2 game series in which Orlando’s gotta go 2-0. Detroit traditionally is prone to offensive lapses in playoff series. The problem is you can’t depend on DHo to get you enough scores or open looks right now and the rest of the perimeter guys aren’t stepping up enough.
I definitely think the series is over but it is the Pistons and the playoffs.
Chris Paul >>> Kobe
May 6th, 2008 at 10:20 am
@spencer
I was watching my old school Jordan dvd where he dropped 69 on the Cavs. Nobody complained back then, except Paxson and Ehlo. Price and Jordan didn’t say a damn thing all game regarding the officiating.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Duncan may be a crybaby…but he is a crybaby with four rings…no matter what way you cut it that is fucking impressive.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:20 am
CP3 is playing like Bruce Bowen kicked his puppy or something
The man punted Baxter
May 6th, 2008 at 10:21 am
hate to say it but your right RD. The play down the stretch was unbearable to watch for me
The Dwight Howard dunk on theo was the highligh of my night. i posted it in comment #2. please watch
May 6th, 2008 at 10:23 am
@Spencer - I totally realize that. You just have to watch one game to see it. But for some reason, it seems like Duncan is immune to the criticism. Most of the other guys either get T’s or are at least criticized by the TV guys for doing it. But no one ever says anything about Duncan.
@RWH - I never said he wasn’t good. He’s just a whiny bitch.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Mags…that’s cuz Price and MJ were classy guys in a previous era. lets face it, today’s NBA guys growing up in AAU and prep school settings are a bunch of spoiled bastards. it wasnt the same back in the 80’s.
and chances are good if youre dropping 69, there isn’t too much to complain about…but thanks for rehashing some bad memories.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Spence and Mags - I was at the 69 point game. He was the best ever, and true Cleveland fans hate the fuck out of Him.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Probably something in his own language
May 6th, 2008 at 10:26 am
The league was better overall back then no whining and they let guys play. With the rules today M.J. could easily avg 40 a game.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Why?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:27 am
irish - props for taking the loss so classily (word?). I’d expect a lot worse from some fans.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:27 am
atl…no, duncan just gets thrown out of a game for laughing on the bench. i just think his total body of work, being an incredibly unselfish and well rounded player who is arguably the best player of the decade deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to whining.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I give blumpkins to LeBron James.
Stan was pissed, TNT caught him saying “fucking bullshit” right after the game ended.
Why TBL, oh I don’t know they have only won championships 4 out of the past 8 years, it’s not like they have a track record of winning or anything.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:29 am
As a Pistons fan, I feel for you irish. At the end of the game, I was confident that the Pistons would hold on. I have no faith in Hedo or Rashard to make a big play at crunch time. Those two are awesome for about the first 44 minutes, but watch out at the end.
Howard is a bitch. The dunk on Ratliff shook my TV.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:30 am
they also have a record of folding when they are down big
May 6th, 2008 at 10:30 am
I give blumpkins to LeBron James.
People continue to underestimate the importance of home court in the playoffs. The Hornets won the first two like they were supposed to. If the Spurs lose one at home then they need to panic.
Home Teams Record in 2008 Playoffs: 35-14
Road Teams Record in 2008 Playoffs: 14-35
May 6th, 2008 at 10:30 am
RD…believe me, i hate MJ, but that doesnt diminish my respect for the guy. he’s the cause of a few bad childhood memories.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Howard is a bitch, thats uncalled for
@cbh- i saw Van Gundy say that at the end of the game as well. he was livid, cant blame the fat guy
May 6th, 2008 at 10:32 am
RD, can you imagine MR scoring 12 more points in his best ever game? That would be unthinkable.
Had to do it!
May 6th, 2008 at 10:32 am
@TBL - CBH answered for me, pretty much. And his response is funnier because it includes “I give blumpkins to LeBron James.”
I’m not necessarily saying the Spurs will come back, but I certainly think they could.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:32 am
didn’t Hedo beat the Pistons on a last second 3 earlier this season or am i thinking of something else?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:34 am
i thought it was kind of ironic that theo ratliff forced rashard lewis to miss that last shot. that was very solid defense for a fat beast like ratliff.
did anyone else think they called the majority of the game very close, giving out fouls for the tiniest bumps and whatnot. but then in the last minute, they let them play all tough and shit.
all these NBA refs need to watch a tape of the kansas/memphis game to see how these games should be called. there is just so much inconsistency.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:34 am
i know we got beat by a rashard lewis bank shot from about 12-feet out. i don’t remember a hedo buzzer beater.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:35 am
GYD- you say you have no faith in Hedo at crunch time as a Piston Fan. i still have faith in Hedo after that shot and i am a Magic fan. Your utter stupidity is obvious
Dwight Howard is no bitch
May 6th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Wow, who’d have thought the road team record was exactly opposite of the home team record? (Sorry cbh - just busting some chops)
May 6th, 2008 at 10:36 am
@spencer- Hedo beat the celtics with a last second shot. rumeal is correct as well about Rashard hitting the bank shot to win vs Detroit
May 6th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Rumeal…it was a nationally televised game this year. im beginning to think it wasnt agasint the pistons tho.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Ok, Spencer. Fine. He got kicked out by Joey Crawford. Just let me hate Tim Duncan. I have work-related frustration that needs to be directed at something.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Home teams are much better at home this season.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:38 am
yea, it was against the celts. i wasnt sure tho.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Fuck the Celtics
May 6th, 2008 at 10:40 am
atl…try hating the pistons. it’s easy and gratifying.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:40 am
We hear…… that if the home teams continue to win at this pace. The teams with homecourt will make the finals.
/Mike Florio
May 6th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Spence, when referring to “Him or He” capitalize the “H”
I could have got 81 in my elementary school games had I gotten 46 FGA.
LeBron is a lot closer to that capital “H” than anyone since Him.
Chris Paul >>> Kobe (assists don’t matter to some people on this board though).
May 6th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I give blumpkins to LeBron James.
You guys are all idiots, going on 4 hours of sleep and not in the mood, you know what my point is.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Fuck the Celtics
+1
KG went from being one of my favorite non-Hawk players to being a complete douchebag after this series. OH!! He butts his head against the heavily padded post before the game!! HE’S SO INTENSE!! Look at how he pulls his jersey back to reveal exactly where his heart is in a 34-point blowout!!
And then the cheap shot against Zaza Pachulia was the capper…why does KG feel the need to concern himself with a 2pt, 2reb guy in the playoffs - a guy that only got into it with him when KG shoved him, completely unprovoked? Fuck him.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:44 am
well said ATL
David Stern handed that series to the Celtics
I hate to root for the Queen, but i am going to have to
May 6th, 2008 at 10:44 am
atl…ive been saying that all year and getting ripped for it.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:45 am
@RD- did you play on 7 foot rims in elementary school? i would of dropped a Wilt
May 6th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Celts favored by 9.5 tonight over The LeBrons - DO THEY COVER???
May 6th, 2008 at 10:46 am
atlfan +100 serious fuck KG and all that bullshit show the place your heart
im sure i will feel the same way as you do at the end of the series but ill feel better after we win in 6
fuck boston fan bases
May 6th, 2008 at 10:47 am
10 foot, but I could shoot the muthafucka.
I shot so well I couldn’t play in high school w/ my 5′10, chubby, white ass
May 6th, 2008 at 10:47 am
And here I thought he wanted to show his nipple.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:48 am
I really wish Zaza would’ve clocked his skinny ass. Oh well. Hey, can I be a Cavs fan now? I think Mike Brown’s an idiot too! (Although I’d probably trade him for Mike Woodson). I’ve also been to Ohio. So that should count for something.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:48 am
@RD- i had steve logan passing me the rock in high school. good times
May 6th, 2008 at 10:49 am
i was bored as fuck this morning and read some scoop jackson shit article about KG. he said everyone has been hoping he wins a ring. really? i can’t stand the bastard and i hope the cavs sweep them. since when does scoop speak for all of america? fucking joke.
and also, i thought i heard during the NCAA tournament that the NCAA and NBA now use some clock program thing that stops the clock automatically at the sound of a whistle. it sounds pretty high-tech, but i know i heard this somewhere. can anyone confirm? how did this idiot from minnesota botch that play so badly?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:50 am
mike brown>doc rivers and that is an amazing statement
May 6th, 2008 at 10:50 am
@rumeal- i heard that as well. that guy from Minnesota needs to go back to Fargo. bastard
May 6th, 2008 at 10:50 am
I am sure this has been mentioned many times over on the internets, but the replay that TNT showed last night - with the clock superimposed - was not using a clock with tenths of seconds. It was showing seconds and frames, of which there are 30 in one second. The clock was at 5 seconds and 22 frames, or about 5.7 seconds, not 5.2, which I have seen reported in a couple of articles.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:51 am
well is scoop wrote it rumeal im sure it had 10 paragraphs on why it would be racist to not hope he wins one
May 6th, 2008 at 10:51 am
what did Manu say?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Steve Logan is an OHIO boy, and was sick as hell at that point.
ATL - JUMP ON, Boston fans just jumped on their own team’s bandwagon after the KG trade.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:51 am
KG >>> LeNikeMarketing
May 6th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Scoop Jackson = Complete mental retard.
Kobe >>> Scoop Jackson
May 6th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Any thoughts on the Lewis drive at the end of the game of dishing to Howard in the lane or was the pass not there ?
May 6th, 2008 at 10:52 am
i hate Doc Rivers. Hate his son. I think i hate his dog
May 6th, 2008 at 10:54 am
yeah Rashard should of shot it
May 6th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Mags…gimme a break.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:54 am
LeNikeAdvertising>KG Gatorade advertising
May 6th, 2008 at 10:55 am
lebron does Vitamin Water with Dwight now. so the hate went down 5 % for the queen
May 6th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Back to last night’s execution, they cannot keep giving Rashard Lewis the ball at the top of the arc and ask him to create off the dribble. Does SVG think Rashard FUCKING Lewis is LeBron James or Chris Paul.
If anything just give it to him and have him jack up a fadeaway jumper, his game is much more similar to Kobe’s than to an assistor (new word?)
May 6th, 2008 at 10:57 am
sorry i am way late, but hey Irish, tough loss for your boys. They fought hard.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Yes - they’ve had this for a little while. If you watch closely, you will always notice the refs reach for their beltline after the ball is put in play (most are pretty subtle about it). The system stops the clock immediately (to prevent lag time from a human reacting to the whistle), but does nothing to START the clock properly (still some old guy sitting at the scorer’s table).
The guy who invented it used to be in the NBA. See article here
May 6th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I give blumpkins to LeBron James.
I don’t like KG much but that Gatorade commercial destroys any LeBron commercial, especially those stupid and unfunny ones from a year ago where he was the “LeBrons”
May 6th, 2008 at 11:00 am
I have a few thoughts on the Orlando-Detroit game. First off, what a terribly painful game to watch down the stretch. For both teams. After watching the Lakers-Jazz games the day before, I am subjected to this game which is just painful on both ends. Neither team executing anything. Tons of turnovers, bad passes, bad shots, etc. Ugg. Rough stuff.
Secondly, I do not understand Orlando on offense. Granted, I haven’t seen them much this year and this may be an aberration, but at least down the stretch, why don’t they use Howard more? Do they know they have a 7 foot freak of nature on their team? He is a glorified screener who just tries to crash the offensive boards like Dennis Rodman. He doesn’t get any looks down low. Hell, he doesn’t even set up down low. He’s always setting picks 25 feet away from the basket for Jameer Nelson or Rashard Lewis. Feed him the ball down low and run your offense through him, like every other good team who has a dominant center. wtf?!?!?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:01 am
WHO THE FUCK GIVES A SHIT ABOUT COMMERCIALS?!?!?!!?
this year, on the court, KG couldnt hold LeBron’s jock. all the chest thumping and hand shaking and bench cheerleading doesn’t make up for the fact he’s Dirk with less range and less gumption when actually playing and not acting.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:01 am
@RD- Lewis usually had a bigger man on him that he could take off the dribble. He has been doing that with ease, to say the least against bigger foes. Of course Rashard is no Lebron, but he has earned my respect as a fan
May 6th, 2008 at 11:03 am
He is a glorified screener who just tries to crash the offensive boards like Dennis Rodman- says Sean Jean
its obvious you havent watched that much Magic games to say that about Dwight
May 6th, 2008 at 11:03 am
being down 2-0 in a series and coming back is not impossible..
you just need d-wade
// heat fan
May 6th, 2008 at 11:05 am
I’m not saying rashard Lewis isn’t a good player. But they have more than enough personnel to do better than that late in the half court.
Hell even LeBron struggled doing that crap in the last 90 seconds in game 5 against Washington, the defense is waaaaaaaay more focused at that point, and help side is never gonna be lax or late or indifferent. Not to mention his man defender.
If your not gonna enter it to Howard (they don’t and maybe he isn’t ready for that) then let the fucking point guard go to work.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:06 am
or MJ, just ask a 1993 Knick fan.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:06 am
@cortes: and three refs blowing their whistles every time up the court. BAIL OUT!
May 6th, 2008 at 11:10 am
@RD- Nelson was in foul trouble all game. When he was in the game, he was hitting key shots
im still asking myself WTF was Hedo thinking. We were only down 2 at that point. could of made it 2 for one, but no
so pissed at Hedo for that shot
May 6th, 2008 at 11:10 am
thatd be a novel idea if it wasnt jameer nelson trying to go to work against chauncey…if it was a quick PG, that’d be one thing, but nelson vs. chauncey is a mismatch of epic proportions.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:11 am
exactly spencer
May 6th, 2008 at 11:16 am
yo irish, do you know how many TEAMS were up 2-0 and how many of them failed? i’m looking for a number, because if i remember correctly (i looked it up in 2006 when the heat were down 2-0 to dallas) and i remember walking away from the numbers thinking that the sample size in terms of actual teams was not big (some thing like 11? ) but that may have been 2-0 in the nba finals not playoffs.. let me know if you see anything
May 6th, 2008 at 11:17 am
all i know Cortes is that when the home team wins the first two games, it is a virtual lock, going on to win the series 94.4 percent of the time.
i have no clue about who those teams are that won. i think Cleveland last year is one, but i dont know
May 6th, 2008 at 11:21 am
@ irish Orlando just has to go home and take care of business. last night was tough I thought they were gonna win that one.
As a laker fan I think i would rather play the spurs than the Hornets right now.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:23 am
yea but thats what i mean.. if its only 11 teams then you shouldn’t feel as worried.. that stat itself is very vague.. going 2-0 has happened to teams much worse than orlando.. you guys arent done yet
May 6th, 2008 at 11:24 am
@jb- we need these home games bad. I wish Orlando won last night so bad, would of made these home games even more special
@cortes- oh now your a heat fan again lol. only one team in state that is good and that is Orlando baby
May 6th, 2008 at 11:26 am
How could you possibly be that bored? He’s a game that’s fun to play - some mornings, I look to see how long i can go without going to ESPN.com. It’s gotten to the point that yesterday, a guy asked me about Cameron Diaz and Ashton plugging a movie on ESPN.
I had no clue what the guy was talking about.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Cortes,
D-Wade has found out he loves himself some D-Wade and is on pretty much the same career path of Penny. In fact I’m waiting on T-Moblie to roll out some ‘Lil-Wade commercials.
Wonder how long it will be before Chuck stops taking his calls?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:31 am
lol you know i like all the miami teams.. and your my boy but only one basketball team in florida has a ring
May 6th, 2008 at 11:31 am
unfortunately for Magic fans, rainy season doesn’t start in Florida until the end of May, sorry Irish…
May 6th, 2008 at 11:32 am
lol sparty. i know you were getting worried during the 3rd quarter when it was pouring
too bad it didnt last huh
May 6th, 2008 at 11:33 am
I’m bringing the hate today. That Magic gaem was fucking hard to watch.
The Spurs as a team are the whiniest bitches in the NBA. Duncans bug eyes put them over the top.
Did I miss something? The Jazz play one day after advancing to the second round, but the celtics get a day off? What gives? Fucking NBA, turning into Nascar.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:33 am
eh, typical Great Lakes storm. 10 minutes and it clears up.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:33 am
sad to admit, i was driving to meet a client and caught an interview of the two on tirico/SvP. i was embarassed for everyone involved, excpet kutcher and diaz, they can both go away for all i care.
but it was all redeemed when SvP had anthony kim on for an interview on his show.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:35 am
sandibalz…Utah advancing is the NBA’s worst nightmare.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:36 am
how bad were the ratings when the Bulls played the Jazz?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:37 am
@sandi- the NBA scheduling has been all out of wack for the playoffs. they are doing it for ratings imo
May 6th, 2008 at 11:38 am
I’m not saying that I like them advancing. I just don’t think the NBA should be so GD obvious with its pushing of teams. Everyone who advanced should have either played the next day or not. Only teams that should have been resting were the ones who finished their series early.
It’s one thing to rig the lottery, or sit by and watch the Knicks be destroyed, but to actively put teams in harder situations than other is kinda fucked up.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:39 am
sparty…can’t compare. boozer/williams aren’t stockton/malone and nobody in the East can bring the ratings heat like MJ could, not LBJ, not KG.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:39 am
i think people watched because Jordan was playing.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:39 am
spence - did you tickle your bean during the Kim interview? I know how much you like golf…
May 6th, 2008 at 11:40 am
The 2nd round starting before the 1st round was complete is the most fucked up thing. Had ATL pulled the upset, it would have been so wrong having the Pistons play Orlando. Then again, had ATL beat Boston, would anyone want to play them?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:40 am
The 2nd round starting before the 1st round was complete is the most fucked up thing
amen to that
May 6th, 2008 at 11:41 am
spence, as i submitted that comment i said to myself “MJ you idiot.”
May 6th, 2008 at 11:41 am
clown…i did indeed. Kim is my new golf mancrush. saturday and sunday were 6 hours of golf porn, this Kim kid is gonna be YUUUUGGE…maybe, dare i say it, knock tiger down a few times?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Since you asked about Chris Paul and Bruce Bowen
It’s gotten to the point that yesterday, a guy asked me about Cameron Diaz and Ashton plugging a movie on ESPN.
They were on TNT during the Hornets game too. These TNT commercials for “The Closer,” “House of Payne” and “The Bill Engvall Show” are getting as bad as TBS and “Frank TV” during the baseball playoffs. And we all know that that worked so well. So what do they decide do to during basketball? The exact same thing, of course.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:44 am
+1 to Jay
every TNT analyst says the house of payne is so funny. Fratello says it, Doug Collins says it. Like they watch that garbage
May 6th, 2008 at 11:44 am
irish: I’m not saying that is all Howard is (I think he’s a stud), but that is how they used him down the stretch. They might as well have had Tyson Chandler or Drew Gooden playing in the game. They didn’t utilize Howard at all.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Sean Jean,
I totally agree, especially with Sheed having 5 fouls.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Thats been my question about the magic all year, come playoff time who closes games. Dwight is fantastic, but when Hedo is your go to crunch time guy you’re going to have problems winning close games, especially on the road.
That said, they just have to hold serve at home and see what happens, this series definitely isn’t over.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Irish,
I believe it is part of the promo. They actually say “Very Funny.” the tbs slogan
May 6th, 2008 at 11:52 am
And I tried watching House of Payne once, worst..show..ever. I realize I’m probably not the target audience, but man that shit was terrible.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:54 am
coop…is that the show where one of them is a fireman and has a smokin hot coworker firechick that is completely, unrealistically out of place?
May 6th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Missed this whole thing. Guess I have to single out one comment and make a rebuttal.
Kobe had 81. Congrats. One game sample. BEST EVAHHHHH.
Fernando Tatis had 4 dongs in a game. CONSEQUENTLY (channeling Carr), he HAS to be better than Pujols, Bonds, and A-Rod combined. Dude is so sweet!!!11one1!one!!!!
May 6th, 2008 at 11:55 am
coop: Why the fuck did you try watching House of Payne? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a show that emanates “not funny” more than that. Well, maybe the Bill Engvall show. The entire CBS original line up is “Very, Very not funny.”
May 6th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Nick…do you really want my dog to take a shit on your lawn? if not, quit with the carr channeling, we get enough of him during the regular season as it is. god i hate that fucker.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I am part of the house of payne “target audience” I can’t say that I hate it but I dont watch it either.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Bruce Bowen sucks donkey dick
May 6th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Nick P - I agree that smalls samples are a stupid argument.
It’s clear Kobe is better because he has better handles, a better jumper and can actually play defense.
LeBron is a better lane-barreller, though
May 6th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I occasionally watch “Law & Order” reruns on TNT. They do the same thing with over-promoting on that show too. Of course we’re talking about the same network that when they show a movie on their channel, they show it like 23 times in 3 consecutive nights. There is no such thing as overkill, according to them.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
@clown: I’m waiting on Kobe to take the “better handle, better jumper, and better defense” and use it to actually, um, play better than Lebron.
Hasn’t happened yet, but I think he can do it! He’ll only be 30 in 3 months. Plenty of time.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
there hasn’t been a funny typical sitcom on TV since Raymond ended. and that was only funny if you are married.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
The magic need to keep Nelson off of Billups. id rather him guard Rip. On the offensive side of the ball, it comes down to them making their 3’s. I have zero confidence in their offense. i think they are still one player away from being an elite team though.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
“better handles?” That one is just plain hilarious.
“Can actually play defense?” Ask Kobe who he’d rather have guarding him, his clone, or LeBron James. LeBron shits on offensive players when he wants to, he’s 6/9, 250, is quick/fast as hell and jumps out of the gym. Nice try there though
May 6th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
guys, guys, calm thyselves - sorry for the miscommunication. If I’m looking to score, I go to LeBron. If I’m looking for a leader who’s capable of making his teammates better and not only interested in marketing and stat-boosting, them I go for Kobe. That’s all. No hard feelings.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Haha these guys love fucking with us.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Sitcoms are inherently unfunny. Funny ones are the exception. They are obsolete.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
/rape joke
May 6th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Yeah that Kobe sure is proving he’s barely a top 6 player so far in the playoffs - against 50-win teams.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
When Marv Albert is doing the promos for that dumb urban show, you can tell he’s being extremely sarcastic. Almost the same tone of voice when he says “LeBron’s the best in the NBA.” That’s how you know he’s joking.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Top-6 players in the Assocation prove themselves over 82 game seasons and multi-years, not 5 game stretches. Otherwise Tim Thomas has a pretty strong claim as an elite player.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
@sandibalz, Utah Jazz had one off day (Saturday) like the Celtics had one (Monday) so i don’t know what’s the double standard. The double standard is that they now have 2 days off before Game 2, and the Celtics have only 1 day.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Holy shit stop with the Kobe Lebron crap sweet mother of crap.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Kobe has been a top 6 player in the association for multiple seasons.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
This is cute, I don’t expect 50%+ of this board to understand the implications of this link, but I’m gonna post it anyways:

Irish - still waiting for the rain. You told me to get my umbrella…going to return it to Wallmart today.
Chris Paul is amazing. Still think of the crotch punch from his last year in college when I hear his name. Any pictures of that famous incident you can dig up, TBL?
May 6th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Tim Duncan > Kobe
May 6th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Dirk > Kobe
May 6th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
A pile of vomit > this argument.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
anthony kim > tiger woods
May 6th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Tiger Woods and Roger Federer > LeBron (Not at their sports, simply because they play on 1 man teams).
May 6th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Phil Mickelson and Rafael Nadal > Kobe
May 6th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
RD…no way is The Tits better than Kobe, i just cant let you say that.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
I don’t like where this argument is headed. Kobe is not #2 to Lebron’s #1.
It’s more like:
Retief Goosen & Lleyton Hewitt > Kobe
May 6th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
@chelsea chris- you will still need the umbrella. Orlando is coming back to Detroit for Game 5
it rained for the 3rd quarter thats for sure last night. Orlando needs that all Game 3 and all of Game 4
May 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Nick…Goosen is old hat. Stewart Cink is a better comparison, leave the golf analogies to the pros, lawya.
if we’re talkin PGA = NBA…goosen = sam cassell
May 6th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
RD, terrible link to 82games and “Super Clutch” stats. Considering the Lakers have been in exponentially less close games than the Cavs, I’d say that statistic is a little weighed in LeBron’s favor.
And actually, if you break that down per opportunity (per minute of clutch opportunity), as expected, Kobe is more clutch. Oh and those numbers (if we want to rely on them, which I don’t), also tell us that Kobe is a better rebounder in the clutch, and a better assist man per minute.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
So if you’re going to use weighted statistics boys, make sure they yield the “desired” results!
May 6th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
A pile of vomit > this argument
May 6th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Chandra Levy > Natalie Holloway
May 6th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Dakota Fanning > Legal girls
May 6th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Its per 48 minutes, not totals. Don’t worry you were in the 50%+.
May 6th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
And you have read the assists and turnovers incredibly wrong.
Your bad.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Ross, I’m pretty sure LeBron isn’t averaging 74.9 points per minute in the clutch. If he is, I apologize for my mistake, and I will admit that LeBron is the best of all time right now. Although Kobe’s 63.7 points per MINUTE is not shabby either in the clutch. Some guys go scoreless in the final minutes, so that’s pretty telling.
And according to those stats, Kobe’s a better rebounder in the clutch.. so there. That’s what your stats stay whether we like them or not.
May 6th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
And I apologize, upon 5th reading, it is per 48 minutes. However, what that more of less tells me is that you guys will hammer Kobe over not being a team player, but then when it comes to scoring in the clutch, you champion the point scorers and rip the the guy who finishes second. I’m curious as to when the agenda will end?
