The Pimping of OJ Mayo
College Basketball, ESPN, NBA May 12th. 2008, 11:30am
Can’t really call this a We-Told-You-So moment, because even though the Ronald Guillory-OJ Mayo connection was highly visible in March of 2007, we actually thought the NCAA would catch wind of it, and Mayo wouldn’t play at USC. But dammit if we weren’t close! This weekend, ESPN’s Outside the Lines nailed the story (or had it handed to them): OJ Mayo “received thousands of dollars in cash, clothes and other benefits” during high school and his one season at USC.
The man behind it all: Ronald “Runner” Guillory, who superagent Bill Duffy allegedly paid to make sure that Mayo eventually signed with Bill Duffy Associates Sports Management. According Louis Johnson, a former journalist – who was jailed for nine days on a cocaine arrest – Guillory plied Mayo with just about everything you can imagine in high school and USC (that flash you saw out of the corner of your eye was Tim Floyd looking for the nearest exit). USC defenders will try to smear Johnson, and that’s fine – but good luck trying to ignore the dozens of receipts he saved. Guillory’s going to have to crawl back under the rock he came out from, and Duffy … he’ll probably walk away unscathed, even though he shouldn’t.
Soo … when we can expect the real story behind Michael Beasley and Kansas State and Frank Martin?

Check out this Doyle column from October 2006 – he was all over this:

Give me a minute, I’m still sifting through all those comments from last March.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:34 am
i caught this story on ESPN this morning. Oj’s mom was saying that she thought that Guillory guy was bad news from a mothers standpoint. But she added that she had to stand by her son
At least he didnt break any records or anything in college to be taken away
Reggie Bush and Oj Mayo have something else in common now huh
May 12th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Why did you use a high school pic? Were all of his USC photos already stricken from the record?
May 12th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Yup, that Doyel column was in that first link
May 12th, 2008 at 11:39 am
I saw that too Irish, since when do you believe your 17 year old. You’re the parent, act like it.
Shocked that this could happen at USC, just shocked. What a fucking joke, of course the NCAA will do nothing. Two high profile players from poor families rolling with lots of cash in LA, yet the university has no clue and can’t be held responsible.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:42 am
I hope the NCAA SMSUS USC for this.
/hopes people get this joke
May 12th, 2008 at 11:43 am
In other news: The sky is blue and fire is hot.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:44 am
I wonder what this will do for his stock come draft day.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Come on TBL…this isn’t news…USC has been paying players for years…
May 12th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Methinks the NCAA should pay the people who make them all the money.
/Sorry women’s water polo team, you still have to eat in the cafeteria
May 12th, 2008 at 11:45 am
I wonder what this will do for his stock come draft day.
At least NBA teams know he can handle money!
May 12th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Imagine if Mayo/Bush (there’s a nice visual) had happened at Miami or Alabama, the NCAA and every media person would be up on their high horse railing against those evil universities and their Satanic boosters, but since it’s USC it for some reason is no big deal.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:47 am
i bet he didnt even go to class either…THE SHAME!!!
May 12th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Do I smell the dreaded “Lack of Institutional Control”
That flash may have been Tim Floyd and Pete Carrol looking for the nearest exit. Oh wait, I forgot, it is USC and nothing will come of it. But we can’t have a playoff in CFB because we are worried about the “student” athletes.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:48 am
No OSU fans allowed, pot, kettle, stones, glass houses, something like that.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:48 am
lol @ coop and nice visual.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Mayo also likes half-Armenien heifers.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:49 am
hence the post. usc should get cooked
May 12th, 2008 at 11:52 am
PKI — I got the death penalty SMU crack right away — good work son.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:52 am
If he didn’t go to class that would make him similar to most college students.
May 12th, 2008 at 11:52 am
coop…why single out OSU fans? im SURE that this wasnt going on with Eric Gordon at IU, Rose at Memphis, and im POSITIVE that beasley’s dream was to play in the middle of fucking KANSAS (and not for the school that actually has a decent program).
May 12th, 2008 at 11:52 am
USC..won’t because get cooked, they are the only professional Football team in LA…and why should a college get cooked if the player has been doing this on his own…it’s not like the boosters of USC paid the guy…he got an agent…recruited himself into an opportunity to show his wares and left…if the NBA is going to make asinine rules and close their free market you can’t get on the schools who are taking these kids..its all about the millions
May 12th, 2008 at 11:53 am
guys named OJ that go to USC always seem to have “issues.”
May 12th, 2008 at 11:53 am
+ 300 for clown
nothin’ but a big *ss and a sex tape
May 12th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Spence, because you know I’ll never pass on a chance to claim that OSU cheats, pays players, has a pact with the devil, and recruits only serial killers and baby seal rapists.
/all true
May 12th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Beasley was a Huggins recruit, so you absolutely know he was making some coin.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
The main reason Beasley went to KSU was because their assistant coach had ties to his DC area elite AAU team. Huggins was just lucky he had the guy on staff.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Who cares? Let these guys play in the NBA, and this shit would never happen.
Mayo, Durant, Oden, Beasley, Rose…they never should have had to set foot on a campus.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Very true
May 12th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Let’s face it. All successful programs pay players. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be successful. You can be a top 10 program or you can have high ethical standards but under the current system, you can’t be both.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
coop…fair enough.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
MB at Kansas State got $500,000 from his future agent/agency for his one-year in college…
If OJ only got 30,000 of around $350,000 that was suppose to go towards securing him for BDA and this enticement startted in High School… then OJ got played For Real (I’m sure in didn’t major in Math or Accounting)
Do the math:
M. Beasley = 1 year = $500,000
OJ Mayo = 3+ years = $25,000 to $35,000
May 12th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Nick, you really think this wasn’t going on back when there was no 19-year old rule?
This has gone on forever and will go on forever.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Guys like OJ Mayo and Eric Gordon don’t belong in college basketball. Let them go to the NBA.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
The main reason Beasley went to KSU was because their assistant coach had ties to his DC area elite AAU team. Huggins was just lucky he hired the alcoholic to get Beasley.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
@cbh: It was always going on. Sure. But the more NBA players that get out of college, the less likely it is to happen. Boosters will always be there with money, but sports agents aren’t gonna be stuffing the pockets of shitty college players with no NBA potential with cash.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Yeah nothing is going to happen to USC. They can just claim they had no knowledge of any of it. I think USC should be looked at, but someone needs to explain to me how its the Univeristy’s fault if the kid takes money from someone thats not affiliated with the school?
I watched the whole OTL report and not once did they talk to someone from USC about it because USC can just say they have no knowledge of it because their boosters didn’t do anything.
If anything USC is getting a slap on the wrist since Mayo isn’t in school anymore and they had nothing to do with money changing hands.
Gotta love college athletics.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
pki, I too got the SMU crack and I have to say I agree. As an SMU alum and someone who went to every single home game last year (1-11 season) and in 2002 (0-12 season), I want blood! Drop the bomb on them NCAA, it’s the only way they’ll ever learn. Otherwise, why even have the Death Penalty in rules?
May 12th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
I agree about USC… They’ve been doing this Too Long to get caught Red-handed. There will be No Serious Infractions/Charges mounted against USC or ANY College with a Big-Money, Revenue-Earning Athletic Department
May 12th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Speaking about paying players…St.John’s basketball, besides the horrendous Mike Jarvis era, put themselves at a tremendous disadvantage in recruiting when they built dorms on campus. Until about 8 years ago St. John’s a commuter school. Since they had no dorms they were allowed to give each kid a stipend to pay for housing. Since most of these kids were NYC kids, they would pocket the stipend (about 12-15K per year at the end) and live at home. They also got a meal card to use on campus. So the basketball players used to roll up on campus in nice cars and it was all legal. St. John’s built dorms and all that went away. Just saying.
May 12th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Won’t happen nick, David Stern is the most powerful man in America. He likes the free publicity that a year or two in college provides, plus that’s 1 less year in the NBA at a huge salary
May 12th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
pk,
I got the SMU death penalty reference. It should happen to USC but it wont. Isnt June Jones trying to bring the mustangs back to life?
May 12th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I wonder when the next blatantly obvious bust, Memphis, will come.
May 12th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
not for a long time. keep dreaming

Beasley’s connection to K-State was KSU assistant Dalonte Hill, who is connected with Curtis Malone of DC Assault, Beasley’s AAU team.
Beasley’s mom also got set up with a job and house in Manhattan.
