Kevin Garnett’s Vanishing Act
NBA May 13th. 2008, 5:15pm
Remember how there was all that chatter – fine, there was hardly any – about Kevin Garnett’s awesome season possibly springing him into the 2nd spot on the imaginary list of best power forwards in NBA history, behind Tim Duncan? Well what happens of the Celtics don’t get the title this year? How can KG ever be thought of as a better player than other titleless PFs like Karl Malone and Charles Barkley? Maybe it’s a bit knee-jerk of us, but KG has hardly looked dominant performed ordinary at best in this series against the Cavs, and since his foil has been a bushy-haired man named Anderson Varejao … yeah, there’s no defending that. KG – get back to your 2004 self, when you single-handidly took the Lakers to six games in the Western Conference Finals.

he’s a nice little rebounder and he growls a lot, hardly one of the great PF’s ever

I thought when he jersey pops and pounds his chest, I thought that meant that he was all that.
A true MVP candidate can lead his team to at least one victory on the road in the playoffs.
What a joke.

He was pretty good in games 1 and 2. Games 3 and 4 not so much.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
He was nowhere in Games 3 and 4….and during the 4th quarter of Game 4 I think the Celtics filed a missing persons report on him. The guy has to get aggressive and drive the ball to the hoop and post people up and stop taking pussy jumpers.

He was pretty good at home. Games on the road not so much.
/fixed

Never really been much of KG fan. Way to many fade away jumper’s and chest thumpin after hitting a weak jump shot instead of taking to the rim. Not really tough enough to battle it out on the inside even though you are 7 feet tall (same goes for Dirk). That is why I have way more respect someone like Superman Dwight.

Wally made that Minn team go.

I thought when he jersey pops and pounds his chest, I thought that meant that he was all that.
That should go the way of the phrase “bling” and the jesture “raising the roof”

It’s a huge joke that he INTENSE! and CHESTPOUNDING! when they’re up 30 at home on the Hawks, yet can’t bring any of that INTENSITY! to the paint on the road.
How many times can you possibly pass out of single-coverage on the block in the last 8 minutes of a tight game? I mean he wasn’t even attempting his fadeaway on Josh Smith or Varajeo, just passing it back out after maybe 2 dribbles. Only clutch play he’s had all playoffs is hitting a jumper when Joe Smith left him wide open in Game 1.
No way he’s better than Barkley, or Malone for that matter. Malone didn’t disappear as much as KG does. He’s a rich man’s Chris Webber in the 4th.

What a legacy…

As a former T-wolves season ticket holder, I’m happy that the rest of the country is figuring out what we’ve known in Minnesota for a long time. KG is an overrated pansy. Let’s also not forget the two fights he got into while here in Minny. Sucker-punching Wally Sczerbiak and that other gangly white kid who’s name I can’t even remember anymore.

KG is beastly on the whole. Expecting KG and the Celts to win the NBA title in their first year together, and with Doc Rivers coaching, is the kind of crap pundits say, not basketball fans.
Now, they should still beat the Cavs, but I think expecting them to be a champion in 1 year is a bit much.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
I used to like KG when he was on the T-wolves. This year, not so much.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Just read this on TrueHoop, goes along well with this post:
“According 82games.com’s ‘clutch stats’ which tracks player performance (on a per 48 minute basis) in games where the margin is five points or less with five minutes or less to play in the fourth quarter or during overtime, Garnett has been disappearing all season.”
May 13th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Good stuff. I actually enjoyed watching Webber more than KG throughout his career.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
@August – Well if they don’t win this year… Another year and 10,000 miles on “The Big Three” and another year of seasoning for the Magic, Raptors, LeBron (Hey, maybe they’ll get him help this off season)Hawks, etc. And that’s just in the East. The Jazz, Rockets and Hornets will all be stronger. Kobe will still be in his prime with Gasol and a healthy Bynum out West. This is the Celtics shot. The stars have aligned.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
@ August
It really shouldn’t be though……and I’m a pretty knowledgeable basketball fan…..and I hate the Celtics. Rivers is an average coach at best, but clearly Pierce, KG, and Allen are underperforming. They are all veterans. All have playoff experience, and the gutlessness and vaginitis they are showing on the road is pathetic. Pierce has his hands full with Lebron this series, so I’m not gonna singe him out…..but KG and Allen should be beasting….and are clearly failing.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Webber has passed more than Garnett in the final 5 minutes of games, neither will take a huge shot
May 13th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
The problem, IMO, is Doc Rivers. He chooses to continue to run the offense through Pierce. Pierce can’t do jackshit with Lebron guarding him. If I were a Celtics fan, I’d be pissed KG doesn’t get a touch in the low block every possession.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Rivers rotations are laughable…..but the Celtics should be good enough to overcome his stupidity and at least make the Finals. If they fall short of the Finals…..the season is a colossal failure
May 13th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
1.Duncan
2.Malone
3.Barkley
4.McHale
5.Garnett
Amare will be pushing him out of the 5 slot shortly
May 13th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
He’s not a top 5 PF. He’s top 15 at best. You can’t vag out in this many playoff games and be considered a top 5 player at your position for the history of the sport.
May 13th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Pierce is having a great series, it’s just on the defensive end.
Ray Allen doesn’t deserve to be in a grouping called “The Big Three”
Garnett is just not doing what he should be doing
May 13th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
One more reason I hate Garnett. A friend of mine worked at a vet hospital in the Twin Cities while Garnett was here. He brought a dog there for treatment and acted like a major asshole to everyone. He then ignored several billings and they finally sent the bill to a collection agency. Asshole.
May 13th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Groin, I think that’s a violation. Off with your head!
May 13th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Groin are you thinking of Fred the mayor Hoiberg
May 13th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Hoiberg didnt pay a vet bill? or got punched by Garnett?
May 13th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Billups is not playing tonight. Irish has one more chance.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
YYSA, agreed. KG is just one of those guys (looking at you TMac) that plays great in half empty arenas in December, looks real good on the stat sheet, but when the lights come on in May they are nowhere to be found. That 2004 team was really more about Cassell and Sprewell, KG was a nice compliment player.
Its funny, everyone says the same thing, I’ve always thought he was a pussy, this year is simply validating that.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Kevin McHale is not a top 5 PF all time god damn it!!
Shawn Kemp would F****** clown him so bad its not funny. Seriously, if he wasn’t on that Boston squad people would never rank him so high.
May 13th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I have always liked KG, he will shine in a big moment this post season and put all the haters to sleep.
May 13th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Voice of reason here. KG has played in two game 7s in his career. He put up a 32-21 against SAC 3 years ago and he put up a 18-11 in 27 minutes in a 30pt win over the Hawks last week. He’s shown up.
May 14th, 2008 at 6:52 am
funny…i would take Rodman over KG any day. at least you knew Rodman would disappear for quarters on end.
May 14th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
No, Hoiberg has nothing to do with this story. Rick Rickert was the guy I was thinking of. And, what did I violate?
