The Media Revolution Continues: Bill Simmons Goes Whitlock On ESPN* (ESPN Statement Released)
Bill Simmons, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings May 14th. 2008, 4:22pm
Working for ESPN and taking shots at the WWL has become trendy, hasn’t it? First came TJ Simers of the LA Times. Two years ago, Jason Whitlock of the KC Star did the honors. Today, it’s Bill Simmons. The first two were almost instantly relieved of their duties. What will become of The Sports Guy?
The guess here is probably nothing. You know how agents for NFL and NBA athletes wage battles against the organization through to the media? Now, sportswriters can do the same through blogs! Simmons might take occasional, thinly-veiled jabs at his employer in his columns, but this is different – it’s a roundhouse right to Norby and Rob King in the middle of the Bristol Cafeteria. It’s massive.
We’re guessing this uprising is one of three things: 1) The Costas Now special on the media was a fairly significant deal among web-dwellers and the media, and Simmons was hardly mentioned. Could this be his way of stomping his feet and shouting, ‘Hey, what about me? I started all this fan-against-the-establishment stuff years ago!’ in an effort to regain street cred? 2) ESPN really pissed Simmons off and he needed to vent. 3) ESPN, feeling empowered because it’s about to bring sportswriting legend Rick Reilly on board next month, feels it no longer needs to kowtow to its internet star anymore, and pushed back against the franchise. (This isn’t a Ced Ceballos ‘chise; he’s been propping up Page 2 since it fell apart a few years ago. If he’s let go, there should be a mock funeral for Page 2, and if it must live on, it should do so under another name.)
What about this scenario: Simmons, having worked something out with his late-night-TV show-havin’ buddy, decides to push ESPN as far as it’ll go before they’re forced to terminate his contract, pay him a hefty portion of his salary and let him walk. Two weeks later, Simmons slides into his cushy new sitcom-writing gig with his pal. It’s a win-win scenario. Then, Simmons starts the ultimate blog on the side – he’s able to do his sports riff thing, and take shots at his former employer. So technically, win-win-win.
[UPDATE: From an ESPN spokesman: "Bill is an exceptional talent with a unique voice that we're proud to bring to fans. In any creative environment that features talented people, there will inevitably be differences. As we have in the past, we'll continue to work through them."]

TBL, when did you become Oliver Stone?
This is much ado about nothing.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
The last two people that said as much were let go. Why will things be different? Where will ESPn draw the line?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Didn’t Simmons say on one of his podcasts that he turned down being on the Costas special?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
HBO asked Simmons to be on the blogging panel. He said no. Or at least that’s what he said in his podcast a couple weeks back.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Damn you, Battleship Potemkin!
May 14th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
i don’t think ESPN will let him get away, Whitlock and Simers don’t have his audience. He did say in a podcast that he turned down the Costas special. He has also kind of hinted in his podcasts that he is upset with ESPN certainly not to this degree though.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Don’t listen to his podcasts, but good to know.
ESPN says there will be a ’statement’ released at some point, maybe today.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I usually like Simmons’ work (that puts me in the minority, I know). But his latest column about Doc Rivers was basically unreadable.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
maybe he was promised input on page2 hires, did he re-up before or after they signed jemele hill?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
For the reason bsanders stated, how can you let go of your biggest online asset and just let him go to the competition? Whitlock and Simers are not on his level. I am not talking about in terms of writing ability, in readership I am willing to guarantee many more people read Simmons than those two.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
i hope he gets the pink slip
May 14th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Re: Point 2 – I’m sure the recent Barack Obama non-podcast isn’t helping this situation.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I agree with irish.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
If they do let him go I will admit to being wrong but it would be an unebelivably stupid move on ESPN’s part.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Complaining about your employer is as American as apple pie. The thing is, now that he’s high profile ESPN actually needs him more than he needs them. Love him or hate him, he has carried that monstrosity known as Page 2 for years.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Nick, if he does I am sure you will find out where he ends up and keep reading him anyway.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
His “column” today was incredibly bloggy. I enjoyed it. When ESPN lets him go he can come work here with LeBatard.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
he didn’t say anything remotely fireable. but he did let everyone know he has issues with espn. that’s good. i’m glad he did it. i’m a huge simmons fan. but i’d like for someone to look up the quote he had about me when i fired on espn.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
/3 half-assed, loosely-related comments for the price of one!
May 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
@coop – since HST was shot out of a cannon
May 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
he gets alot of leeway there, the kind others do not. he already worked for Kimmel so forget that. maybe he finished his screenplay and is ready to get to work making a movie…
May 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
good point Franklin… that’s a level of get Simmons isn’t used to, and having it crushed for no reason couldn’t and shouldn’t sit well.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Page 3 > Page 2
May 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
All my points are pretty much taken. i agree that ESPN would never let him go because all these readers would realize the smugness of ESPN. they won’t even put up with their own employees taking shots without recourse.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
It’d be nice for him to disappear for awhile…maybe he’ll get the douchebag boston fan beat out of him and he’ll come back and actually be worth the read.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
is he pissed about the obama podcast?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
@cbh: I read everything the guy writes. 3 years ago his shit was gold. He’s a fucking hack now, though. I keep hoping he gets back to that. Call it masochism or whatever you want, but maybe one of these days he’ll write something good again.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
“If you hate your job, you don’t complain about your boss! You just go in there every day, and do it half-assed. That’s the American way!”

May 14th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Love him or hate him, Jason McIntyre has carried that monstrosity known as Page 3 for months.
/fixed

+30 CRM
May 14th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
alright, if you guys must know. Simmons is signed on to be the Red Sox writer over at Major League Jerk. Hef is throwing the big bucks around.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
It would be about the dumbest thing on earth for espn to fire simmons. Whether you love him or hate him (personally I read every word he writes), there’s no denying that he is espn.com’s main attraction.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
There’s a guns joke in there, but I just don’t have it in me
May 14th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Some kids want to be teachers. Some want to be athletes. My goal in life is to receive a “+1″ from Jason Whitlock.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
I think ESPN will be more upset with who Simmons talked to, not what he said
May 14th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
@whitlock:
May 14th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Dude wants to make movies – he is looking for an out.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
just an absolute guess:
he’s either mad that boston sports aren’t being covered enough by bspn or he wants out of his contract.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
is that really Whitlock though? i love his stuff if it is
May 14th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
who is Jason McIntyre?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
NICK – That is a tremendous beyond words find. Excellent work. May the Cavs win tonight.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Nice get Nick, Simmons=hyprocite
May 14th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
jason McIntyre
May 14th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Nick p is a master at looking up stuff. Faster than a speeding bullet i tell ya
May 14th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
As long as they don’t make a Sports Guy movie in 3-D, I’m fine with it.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
fantastic!
May 14th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
benji, that “video” is ….
lol
lol
May 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Irish, I am pretty sure it is. Jason has said before that he comments on blogs under his real name.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
So technically, win-win-win.
So who has to wear the poster of babies playing instruments on their shirt?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
kfc, jason mcintyre is the Big Lead.
TBL, are you going to give an update when ESPN make’s their statement?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
that video is priceless. Only nomo would do such a thing. what is his name now, dragon seeker?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Nice job benji. That’s nomo’s creation, no?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
@TBL
Just a bit flattered are we?
May 14th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
That’s what she said.
/Hangs head.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
TBL, that video is not my handy work. but it is great.
Irish, it is RexKramerDangerSeeker i think.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
sorry, should have said, “/feigning noob”
May 14th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
May 14th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
@hef: yeah, nomo made the video.
mini-threadjack
Arlen Spector launches own investigation into spygate. unless people are dying, will the government please stay out of sports.
end threadjack hopefully
May 14th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
I say he permanently changes it to “Rex Kramer, Dragon Seeker.” That’s much funnier.
May 14th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
not to be a sports guy apologist, or offend TBL but this site blew up partly because of that whitlock interview so he was somewhat accurate, talking to deadspin is pretty much the equivalent of giving a quote to SI.com, what with being the “biggest sports blog”, etc ….
May 14th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Plus, and I hate defending simmons, he wasn’t exactly unleashing on the WWL. He was a little hesitant to say anything at all, just that there are issues that need to be resolved.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
i started reading TBL when shrutebag DOS’d it, and i stayed for the whitlock interview + maria sharapova in the banner. i miss that banner.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Not the first time ESPN/ABC/Disney has screwed him over. From his 11/28/07 chat:
May 14th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
I don’t even know who you are anymore.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I miss that banner too
May 14th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Rex. who is that in your gravatar?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
pwned… when i did my interview 2 years ago deadspin was a blip.. that’s a weak defense. i’m not ripping simmons. not at all. he was just wrong at the time and i was right.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I’m surprised Simmons is going off on ESPN a little bit. He must know there will be reprecussions.
“You come at the King, You best not miss”
May 14th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
My name? It’s Jean Val Jeeeeeeean. /Gay Seeker
Anyone only need watch Kentucky Fried Movie to see the daredevil that is the Danger Seeker. Alternatively, you may just see the clip on the youtubes to get the essence of Rex. EXTREMELY NON-PC and WAAAAY NSFW, if only for the very loud use of one very offensive, racially-charged term. But seriously, just buy the movie and take it all in.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Does that mean he came at ESPN with a pillow?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
@Oh No Romo: No, a sock filled with quarters.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
@ TBL-Rolled Glory-Stealer Benji: That’s a Rex Kramer screenshot from the movie.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
any one else notice that on the day this simmons/espn feud hits deadspin and TBL simmons puts up a new column about doc rivers? guess they’re trying to diffuse the situation no?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
@theasusundevil
Well it could have been a pillow full of bricks
May 14th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Well i never…
May 14th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
jason…i’m saying that simmons talking to deadspin today is equivalent to talking to si today as far as exposure, i’m not saying you should have given the interview to deadspin only that simmons was somewhat accurate when he says u gave the interview to a site with 8K readers. i know a lot of people take that as a shot at blogs and i am just saying it was probably accurate at least in spirit.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
@ jasonwhitlock
I think what pwned meant is that doing an interview with Deadspin today is different than you doing an interview with TBL 2 years ago. I agree with you though, Simmons was wrong at the time he wrote that. To be fair, it was a comment from a live chat. I tend to hold those in very little regard and prefer to wait for the follow up if there is one.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
did somebody say kentucky fried?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Jason…checking us out from the Four Seasons in Miami? I agree I love Simmons but he was wrong for calling you out then. Everyone keeps mentioning Simmons and a Jimmy Kimmel led sitcom but Jimmy works for ABC. If ESPN throws him overboard, ABC is essentially doing the same. I say Simmons gets a “slap on the wrist” and things get worked out.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
@rex – that is my favorite clip from Kentucky Fried Movie!! Good stuff…
@nomo – Unbelievable video! Nice job!
May 14th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
I loved what Whitlock said (which is what brought me here) I wish Simmons had the cajones to say what he really wanted to say. I like both guys, ewspecially that WIRE podcast a few months ago.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
i know a lot of people take that as a shot at TBL and i am just saying it was probably accurate at least in spirit.
/fixed
May 14th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
JasonWhitlock, since every blog, to some extent, seems to operate as the ESPN Ombudswoman, do you think we might see the advent of some self-depracating humor or even [shock] an Outside the Lines’ian look at the WWL’s crushing of all things sports-related? The bend-over to the NFL regarding Playmakers was the beginning of the end for me. /End Pipe Dream
May 14th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
I bet nothing happens. There’s no reason to fire him and he needs ESPN. Bill Simmons isn’t writing the next Listen Up!
May 14th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
@CRM
So that means he’s writing a sitcom about nothing?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
i dont care for simmons but i get why people like him
if him leaving means more people like jemele hill on page 2, sucks for espn. ‘the nba, where disrespecting yo mama happens’, really? thats journalism?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Thanks, Sportsgal. We’re one in the same. The Nomo thing was sort of an accidental sign-up for this site, and he needed put to rest for everyone’s sake. So, from here on out, I’ll be hitting on you via Rex Kramer, Sportsgal Seeker.
/Formerly Nomo
May 14th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
sportsgal…if you must know…when we all chat about our blog and suck each others dick and how much Rexy boy loves you we still refer to him as Nomo
May 14th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
everyone quit doing mental gymnastics in a desperate attempt to defend simmons. he’s a big boy with a record of accomplishment. he’s fine.
he was dead wrong for his comments about my interview here. two years later he mimicked them. all this crap about deadspin being the equivalent of si doesn’t make his choice to bitch to a blog any better. blogs are big. i saw blogs being a big deal 3 years ago. i saw their potential to drive discussion.
he sees it now and used a blog to pressure espn.
i’m not a four seasons. i wish. but i can’t get over my freaking addiction to following sports. i’m not supposed to be online. this is worse than my addiction to wendy’s double cheeseburgers!!!!!
May 14th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
@ Rex playmakers was a pretty decent show. Cliffhanger ending sucked though since the WWL knew they weren’t gonna bring it back.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Damn it. Now I’m hungry for a Frostee!
May 14th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
@jasonwhitlock: if you like sports blogs, I know a great, up and coming one.
/super duper whoring. I’m truly an awful person
May 14th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Kornheisers interview on LeBetards show was awesome. you guys should check it out. 790theticket.com
May 14th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Hef maybe you should go write a post if you’re gonna whore it up. A draft top 10 projection was just written up if you need some material.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
@Hef – What’s it called?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Jason…it sounds dumb but you don’t need to give up the sports addiction, you should participate in one instead of watching it. I used to play baseball…I recently started playing baseball jr. (softball) and forgot how much fun it could be. I say pick an activity that you can get into to remember the joy of sports.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I prefer the Baconator from Wendy’s but I get your point
May 14th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
No, this is super duper whoring
May 14th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
The Spicy Baconator is heaven on Earth.
As ESPN’s statement has now come it, this was much ado about nothing.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
@OnterrioSmith
MMMMMMMMMMM, Bacon…….
May 14th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
whoa whoa whoa…. what the? Rex is Nomo, Nomo is Rex, Finkle is Einhorn? Can you just go back to being Nomo instead?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Hef, you idiot. You’re supposed to say the name of your blog if you wanna whore it out.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Hef…I cant believe you would subject Mr. Whitlock to Majorleaguejerk.com…seriously Hef..it’s not like he would enjoy the latest posts on the Mets or the Twins or an acclaimed post about a fan booing a little girl with autism and the mother responding thanking that wonderful writer…if he went to majorleaguejerk.com he might see those things but why whore it out.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
oh, the baconator!!! i’m outta here. damn.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Jason – Do you think ESPN handles this ‘infraction’ differently? Do they think he’s expendable not that Reily is on board as TBL suggests?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Addicting you’re an addict is the first step to recovery.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
@fetch: I’m calling bullshit that my boy Ike Davis isn’t a top 10 pick.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
I didn’t realize how sticky Nomo had become. I feel like Jennifer Grey after she got her nose job.
/That’s what she said.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Whitlock, we need a pitcher for my softball team? Can ya pitch? You can drink while on the field if this helps to persuade your decision.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I think Whitlock has admitted he is not much of a baseball fan in the past, but getting him to go to MLJerk would be quite a coup
May 14th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Fixed.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
@ Hef: Your boy Ike Davis won’t go in the Top 10, sorry. I’m gonna even make a call that he doesn’t go in the first round.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Hef…one more thing you whore…don’t forget the WWW. in front of http://www.majorleaguejerk.com…Rexy Nomo has to figure out the no www thing…
May 14th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
jr bacon > double cheeseburger
you cant beat that value. bacon and a piece of lettuce twice the size of the bun? sign me up.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
well never mind i guess ESPN caved, i don’t think they had much choice really
May 14th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
link to the ESPN statement?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
@Hef: as much as I would love to say Ike is a top 10 talent, he isn’t. Wallace on the other hand is. I have a real issue with the Rays selecting Posey.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Hef hath no shame.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
No more Wendy’s references, please no….AHHHHH!!!
/jumps out window and runs to nearest Wendy’s (15 miles away)
May 14th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
I don’t really think Wallace goes Top 10 either, as good as I think he is. He doesn’t really seem to have a position. Although I will be selecting him with one of my first round picks in my sim league.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Gretzky > Orr
May 14th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
that statement is so soft. Sports guy just made the Mouse his bitch.
/not really
May 14th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
nice linkage Roman. Now you can see… the…downside…of…typing…like…this…
May 14th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
@benji
agree completely.. the interview was awesome, i love when they have kornheiser on..
May 14th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
cortes, TK is the man. the last question he asked was awesome.
Q: How does this make you feel?
A: Rich!
haha
May 14th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
@Fetch9: He’s got the arm and hands to play third. I think he will end up being a corner outfielder (the arm should play there). His swing generates a lot of loft and has extremely quick hands. He should be able to advance through a system fairly quickly. I think there is an argument to be made that he could be top ten. Again, all of this depends who the Rays select (Tim Beckham is who I think they should select).
May 14th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
i’m thinking i really dont want him to leave espn but when you think about it if he is let go and goes out on his own, he can do everything he’s doing now with no censorship and he can completely kill espn during the process which is something i’d be first in line to sign up for
May 14th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
LOL of course, it was even funnier because lebby was asking him so seriously..
ps i loved when that lady called and asked that they suey her daughter lol
May 14th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I saw Smoak play this past weekend and wasn’t real impressed. Granted everyone has an off weekend in college baseball, but damn his average dropped 25 points in one weekend.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
@arkbadger: I was reading that Smoak is Hosmer-lite. I’ve seen Hosmer’s swing on YouTube, it’s incredible. If you get a chance check it out. It is going to be interesting to watch how far Hosmer drops (if he does) because of Boras and his bonus demands.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Whitlock was totally right.
Wendy’s double cheeseburgers are great.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
I’m guessing he tried to negotiate salaries and regular columns for JackO, Hench, House, J-Bug, Dameshek, Dad, the Sports Gal, the Sports Daughter, the Sports Son, Bailey the Sports Dog and the Dooze.
Is that so unreasonable?
May 14th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
The Baconator is OV-ER-RAT-ED (clap-clap…clap-clap-clap).
The Jack in the Box Frisco Burger was the greatest fast food sandwich to ever grace God’s creation.
May 14th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
How dare you Broseph!!!!!!!!!!
May 14th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
@ASU. I just checked some of those clips out, dude looks pretty damn good. Nice smooth swing. Is he an ASU recruit?
May 14th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Sorry Onterrio, that’s the truth. I keeps it real.
By the way, wouldn’t it be great to be great to have a job where you can say, “I haven’t done much work lately. Not my boss’ choice. My choice.”
May 14th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
From on high, the guns of TBL issues the following proclamation:
Banish thine evil thoughts of fast food burgers! Embrace the nutrient-enhanced shakes, creatine, and a love for the iron not seen since a young Joe Piscopo. How can you expect to lift and separate KK’s ass cheeks and eat those vile burgers? Shame on all of you.
/TBL
May 14th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
@arkbadger: He committed to ASU, like Vitters he will not put on the ASU uni because he will be playing pro-ball.
May 14th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
And yes, it would be great to be great.

@ Ark: Don’t know if you’re talking about Hosmer or Beckham. Beckham is a USC recruit, Hosmer I’m not sure. I think both are studs, but I think Alvarez is still the best hitter and right now I’d take Bryan Matusz over anybody.
@ASU: I think Wallace should go top 10, I’m just saying I don’t think he will.

@fetch: Wallace is a lock in the top 20. I agree that Alvarez is the best hitter in the draft. However, there are concerns about his hand (should be healed and not an issue) and his agent (imagine that).
I would personally take Tim Beckham over anybody. He is a true five tool player. He is not an Upton, but he has the tools to stay at short and become an impact player there (I don’t think a Jeter comp is out of the ordinary).

or I have been sleeping with my wife’s hotter sister, not my wife’s choice, but my choice.
then have her say “In any marriage that features hot people, there will inevitably be differences. As we have in the past, we’ll continue to work through them.€œ

ASU: Beckham has the highest ceiling, that much I can agree with. And with the unique situation the Rays are in they can probably afford to take a guy who might be a bust. Not saying he will, but the bust factor is much much higher in a guy like Beckham than an Alvarez, Matusz, Wallace, Smoak, etc. If Wallace is there at 14, which I think he will be, I hope the Twins take him.
