Yardwork: Albert Pujols Will Destroy Your Battery Mates
Baseball May 22nd. 2008, 10:35am
TBL note to baseball fans: Don’t get drunk and slide down railings at games. It’s deadly.
Cardinals 11, Padres 3: Albert Pujols lined a shot off Chris Young’s face in the 3rd inning, halting play for awhile and forcing us to wonder what would have happened had Pujols not reached for the pitch. Troy Glaus singled in Pujols minutes later and in the process, Pujols took out catcher Josh Bard with a clean slide after Bard’s ankle folded over. To recap, the Padres have the worst record in baseball, got verbally thrashed by GM Kevin Towers Monday night, sent Jake Peavy to the DL, lost their best pitcher at home thanks to a line drive off his face and then lost their starting catcher. I believe that’s the definition of “bleak.”
Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 1: Brandon Webb is no longer undefeated, thanks to a homer from Cody Ross and two hits and run from Luis Gonzalez. While Gonzo is 13 years older than Cody, it’s Ross who looks like a 48-year-old. Stephen Drew had three hits and an RBI in the loss.
A’s 9, Rays 1: Jack Cust had two homers and four RBI. I’m still waiting for Chris Shelton to jump out of Cust’s skin – I can’t fathom Cust is actually a productive player.
Red Sox 6, Royals 3: Bartolo Colon pitched five innings, yielding two runs on six hits and two walks in his Red Sox debut. While he leads all active pitchers under 35 in career wins, he… screw it: Bartolo Colon is overweight.
Rangers 10, Twins 1: Sidney Ponson pitched a complete game, moving to 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA in six starts. Up is down. Left is right. Sidney Ponson is a good pitcher.

Holy shit, the Yankees actually won last night. Darrell Rasner for the 2008 Cy Young!
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 am
Also, Albert Pujols is a bad, bad man.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 am
Who’s Brian Bard?
And yes, Ponson pitching well is a sure sign the apocalypse is coming.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 am
As always, nerd (Chris Young, ex-Princeton Tiger) loses to jock (I’m not sure, do they have schools in la Republica Dominicana?)
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 am
Seven in a row for my beloved White Sox…Memorial Day is a good enough benchmark to start becoming officially excited for this season’s prospects right?
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:45 am
As a fellow White Sox fan, yes, yes it is. Throw in that the White Sox also have winning records in the division, on the road, and at home. The pitching has allowed the second fewest runs in the AL and third fewest in the majors.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:45 am
The White Sox pitching continues to get it done. If Buerhle can continue to get back on track, we will keep rolling. Looking forward to our sweep of the Cubs on June 20-22 and 27-29.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 am
god the DBAGS are such a great team. thats two loses in a row to the “horrible” Marlins. Oh yeah, the standings right and the scoreboard right
keep yapping
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:49 am
Let’s take a minute to talk about the Whitesox eh?
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 am
Remember when TBL called for the Whitesox and everyone wet the bed when he said they would compete. That’s awesome.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 am
How old is Gonzo?
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 am
@Ben and Benji: Hell yes. Between Dye and Thome hitting hr’s, all we need know is Paulie to start coming around. Starting pitching for the most part has been un-fucking-believable…they just need to never pitch Dotel again.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 am
i wonder how long i am allowed to hold out hope that the indians bats will come alive…all star break sound good?
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:52 am
Loser of the week: Shania Twain’s husband. He cheated on her with THIS WOMAN?

MacDougal’s still on the team, right…do we have to wait for the next 8 run game to see him again?
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:53 am
how many pitchers’ careers has pujols ruined?
i can think of possibly three: chris young (imagine trying to get back on the mound after that?), lidge (although he seems to have finally recovered from the pujols blast in the 2005 nlcs) and latoya hawkins who pujols ate for lunch when latoya pitched for the cubs.
pujols is a beast.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 am
jesus, i wasnt expecting to see a bald Cameron Diaz TBL. Any Shauna Sand pics?
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 am
the indians suck.
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 am
That chick looks like a slightly more pretty version of the lesbian from the old Roseanne show
May 22nd, 2008 at 10:59 am
No mention of my Astros? Boo-urns… El Caballo cranks a 3-run homer after ducking out of batting practice to see about a heifer not named Clinton. We’re winning games with Chris Sampson and Shawn Chacon pitching! in a different day and age the whole team would’ve been burned for witchcraft after a feat like that.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:00 am
I will volunteer to comfort Shania.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
Only if you start going by Chelsea “Mutt” Chris. She seems into that.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:04 am
I can be whoever she wants me to be…for a day.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 am
Holy Crap! I have never seen anything like that.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 am
While Gonzo is 13 years older than Cody
Let’s see, carry the one… Nope. You’re wrong.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:10 am
ahhhh, back in my comfort zone. the reds, once again, shitting the bed on the west coast. at least they are consistent

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 am
The Dbacks just cannot score. Look for mediocrity for the rest of the year from them.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 am
Is it possible Irish knows less about baseball than he does about basketball?
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 am
Imig, thanks for not including the O’s getting thrashed. I like to pretend that didn’t happen.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 am
You would have gotten some good odds if you had bet that Shania Twain would get dumped by some fossil named Mutt for some scary looking Swiss chick.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 am
@GYD: Yes, having the second best offense in the NL means you will always score 5 runs per game. Even on the road against a good team. Shit, the Phillies scored 1 run in two games to the Nationals, which team is better?
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 am
Perhaps there is more to Irish than meets the eye.
Jerry: No, there’s less.
/I love Seinfeld
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 am
@cbh: The Orioles>>Yankees.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 am
God damn Shania is the tits.
Best cougar ever.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 am
I’m a little disheartened at seeing the Twins only mentioned once all year in yardwork (I think) and it’s after that shitfest. They just can’t it, that’s no secret.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 am
it = hit
me = retard who cant type
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 am
Imig: Who’s St. Louis closer? I picked up Franklin, hoping it’s him, but then they gave it back to Izzy, who subsequently got lit (again)
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 am
Perhaps there is more to Irish than meets the eye.
Jerry: No, there’s less
Well, he’s merry.

get it right Gonzo. I thought you were calling me JErry O’Connell. make up your mind
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 am
When did the Sox pick up Colon? I had no idea this happenend.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 am
Re: Chris Young, does anyone picture Derek Lee watching the highlight at home or on the clubhouse TV with a wry smile on his face? A grin, perhaps?
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am
@ Nick, I think they’re going by committee right now…
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am
The Mets are an embarrassment…Texiera is heating up (which scares me) Larry Jones is unbeatable but seriously…no guts…absolutely no guts this team has…the execution is terrible…they can’t pick each other up…Depending on Mike Pelfrey for a big win is not fair to Mike Pelfrey whose fastball is so fat for a lefthander it’s scary..the kid has stuff but he needs some seasoning…but I can’t keep killing the pitching…where the hell is the offense..is it unreasonable to have it show up more than once a week? People want to know why Mets fans are angry..it’s not about just losing…it is about the way they lose, they mail games in…they don’t show up…they don’t fight back…if they win they win like bullies…7-2…but if they fall behind…I can just turn off the TV…something needs to change..something needs to happen…I don’t care what the standings are…The anger is because this team will keep falling and falling as our competition will heat up and leave us behind…
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am
Hef,
The Dbacks couldn’t hit the sorry Tigers staff. Second in the NL today, but where will they end up?
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 am
Hef I hope you’re right.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 am
Hef: I saw the highlights of Colon last night and he looked VERY very sharp. Not because it was the Royals. His pitches had movement.
Irish, it was a Seinfeld scene.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:40 am
@gonzo- i could of swore i saw you say that Jerry O Connell and me were the same person the other day. am i wrong? no
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:40 am
@GYD: In first place.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:41 am
GYD: I don’t think they’re as good as second, but they’re not a bunch of slouches either. With Reynolds and Byrnes not hitting their weight since May 1, they’re still scoring runs. I’m not concerned.
EDIT: I’m a little concerned
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 am
RWH – not sure if it’s any consolation, but the Braves seem to be hitting a hot streak right now…not sure how much of that has to do with the Mets. I think you combine the Braves hot streak with the fact that they’re playing at home (best home record in the league) and that spells disaster for the Mets.
Question, though–why was Endy Chavez hitting 2nd, and Castillo 7th (or was it 8th?) last night? Chavez CANNOT hit, and never has. Castillo has been doing okay lately it seems…that was puzzling to me, and even the Braves announcers were trying to figure that out.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 am
Tex needs to keep it goin, dude’s 27 and in a contract year, I figured he’d have a super monster season. Maybe they cancel eachother out.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 am
Hef: I would be a little concerned because Upton, Hudson, and Reynolds really carried the team in the beginning of the season. Now it appears that these guys are coming back to earth and your favorite Panda seems to still not be able to hit.
I watched Colon hit last night and the main thing that struck me was that he was really hitting his spots well and throwing with some velocity. Pair that with a good offense behind him and he actually might win a few more games this year.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
@Nick. Izzy is on the DL. The Cards are going closer by committee right now, but I think they will eventually go with Chris Perez who they called up from AAA last week. he’s still young though, so they will prob. take it slow. My advice to you, don’t take a closer from the Cards.
By the way, in my post on MLJ last week I asked for and recieved the call up of Perez. I wonder who all reads that site…
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
“up colon” and “i had no idea this happened” seems so fixable, but I just can’t seem to put
mySpencer’s finger on it…May 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 am
@ ATL: I think the real question is why Frenchy is hitting so low in that lineup. Is this just a way for Cox to have a nice bat towards the bottom of the lineup or is the rest of the lineup that much better?
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 am
ATL..I would blame the manager but I am just and idiotic Met fan who knows nothing so I am just going to say that our fearless leader has determined that it was the correct move and I will loyaly follow him because he is so great I would hate to second guess him
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
Irish, it may have been a running joke. Oh yeah, it had something to do with Big Nuts. Not harmful though. I think you woulda found it funny.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
/made gross
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
The Braves make no sense to me. They should be leading the NL East. Do they only give up runs when they score a bunch and then fail to score when their pitching staff holds the other team to a low run total? I’m gonna look into it. ATL point me in a direction.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am
The Braves own the Mets. It’s as simply as that. Now, if they could start beating the other teams in the division consistently, that would be nice. I’d like to see the rotation and bullpen get back to full strength before I get all excited. Also, the Braves have some atrocious record in 1-run games (2-11?), which will continue to haunt them unless they can learn to pull the close ones out. The close game thing has been a problem the past few years.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 am
@Hef: They go down a few runs early, then catch up only to give up a few more due to an overworked bullpen. You are correct though, the offense has been streaky.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 am
Um, actually, yeah. It’s been feast or famine with them, which aligns with their horrible road record (worst in the majors) and awesome home record (2nd best in the majors). It’s a very odd team.
@Fetch – Teixeira will heat up. As has been written lately, he always starts slow, and heats up right around late May. It’s like clockwork if you look at the stats the last few years and note the trend.
@PKI – I think that’s about right…the lineup is that good. And Francoeur has been off to a slow start (last night’s game notwithstanding–that was the first HR he has hit since like 4/12, or something. I can’t remember exactly. But he’s not a top of the order guy, and the middle is packed with talent (Chipper, Teixeira, McCann, etc). so he’s going to fall down to 6th or 7th on some nights.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Chris Young should have gone to the Preakness instead.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm
So we can add the Cards GM to the esteemed list of Hef’s mom, Spencer’s guitar teacher, and that broad I tried to impress in the bar last night by saying I was RomanWarHelmet(who surely has discovered my ruse by now).
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Frenchy is one of the best 2 out hitters I’ve ever seen… hard to explain why he’s better then, but just does.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 pm
August…Why Frenchy is a good two out hitter…because pitchers tend to throw more fastballs (especially with men on base) and Frenchy hits fastballs…its not always the case but I think it is part of the success of a David Ortiz..that and the best right handed hitter of our generation bats behind him..either way more fastballs
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:05 pm
@Rex: Don’t forget Chris Snyder of the AZ Dbacks. He read the site and then changed the Panda’s entrance music. It’s science.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:09 pm
ARod bats behind Ortiz? I’m not finding that in the NY Post…
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
CLOWN!…now now…A-Rod is terrific but ARod also doesn’t bat .350 with a .450 OBP…Mr. Ramirez does…A-Rod is the better player…but Manny is a hitting savant
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:14 pm
@Hef: So you’re saying the mock draft that I write, assuming I don’t get totally lazy, is going to influence all 30 GMs? Well then, Pedro Alvarez is making it to 14.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:15 pm
@fetch: we can only hope for your sake that’s true.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Idiotic comments like that give Sox fans a bad name. If the Cubs are swept in both series I will not comment here for a month. Write that down.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:19 pm
@August – agreed. If he starts hitting soon (maybe last night is a good start) the Braves could go on an extended roll (maybe they’ll even win on the road!)
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Diesel, it’s called smack talk, calm down.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Oh I’m calm, still makes him sound like a fool. If the Cubs were languishing in the basement then it would work, not when they are tied for the best record in the NL.
May 22nd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Cubs can kick rocks. Reds will pwn those coke heads.
