A reader noticed the discrepancy in the headline and stories regarding the breakup of OJ Mayo and unscrupulous agent Bill Duffy. SI: Agent Dumps Mayo; ESPN: Mayo dumps Agent. Are you a confused reader, wondering who dumped whom? We’re here to help.

SI used the Associated Press: “Former USC basketball star O.J. Mayo has been dropped by his agent ahead of the June 26 NBA draft because of the “overwhelming intensity” of allegations that Mayo illegally received cash and gifts … Due to the overwhelming intensity of recent allegations regarding the recruitment of O.J. Mayo, we feel that our representation of him is a distraction for he and his family at this time.”

ESPN used the AP as well, but Andy Katz also did some legwork: “O.J. Mayo has terminated his relationship with Calvin Andrews and Bill Duffy Associates, ESPN has learned. Mayo’s mother, Alisha Mayo, said in a statement: “As a family, we decided to modify O.J.’s inner circle and allow him to solely focus on improving his game without distraction in a structured, disciplined environment.”

The guess: Mayo split with Duffy, and to save face, Duffy ran to the AP first, knowing that his side of the story would get picked up widest and quickest. Mayo’s mother then had no choice but to go to ESPN – which, ironically, had just burned her son – because it is the largest sports entity on the planet. Why do we think Mayo’s mom is the source? Process of elimination.
