UFC 84: thy Theme is Anticlimactic
MMA, UFC May 25th. 2008, 10:00amIn an otherwise diappointing show (at least in this guy’s opinion), Tito Ortiz got solidly whipped by Lyoto Machida, in what was said to be Tito’s final fight under the UFC name.
Ortiz’s unanimous decision loss to Lyoto Machida was the final fight of his current contract. UFC President Dana White has said that he “has no interest whatsoever in being in the Tito Ortiz business,” and Ortiz has said that “the door is shut 100 percent” on signing another contract.
Across the rest of the card, Lightweight champion B.J. ‘The Prodigy’ Penn stopped Sean ‘The Muscle Shark’ Sherk when the former title holder was unable to continue after a third round beating.
As pointed out by The International Herald Tribune, the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena was strongly behind Penn, booing Sherk as he was introduced. I’d boo Sherk if I was in attendance as well, for know other reason than calling himself the muscle shark. Oh, and Wanderlei Silva destroyed Keith Jardine in the first round.
On a different note, Tito Ortiz came out to Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power”, which still rules all.

Although this wasn’t Penn’s greatest performance, I would still stand behind the thought that when B.J. is at the top of his game, he’s by far the best pound-for-pounder fighter in the UFC.

Uh, BJ is a very good fighter right now but not quite in the top-5, let alone “by far the best”. St. Pierre is better, Silva is better, Rampage is better, Couture is better, etc. Beating Sherk is really not that big of a deal. The guy hasn’t fought in forever and he’s not juicing…I hope.
The Silva match was ridiculous but not entirely surprising. That’s what he does. He goes in there like a wild animal…like an ax murderer…and just chops away at guys until there’s nothing left.

Silva, yes. GSP? I’d put GSP and Penn on the same level. Note I said, when “BJ is at the top of his game” he’s the best P4P. He hasn’t been on top of his game until recently, although this fight wasn’t that great. Rampage and Couture? You have to be joking. Let’s see if Rampage gets past Griffin before we start saying Rampage is the top 5 right now.

llol…Rampage is the Light Heavyweight Champion…the most competitive, highly sought belt in the UFC. He’s undefeated since coming into the UFC and has recent wins over Dan Henderson and Chuck Liddell. You’d put GSP and Penn on the same level? Dude…do you even watch the matches. Penn is a great fighter, no doubt, GSP is on the same level as Silva…and is probably the best all-around talent. He’s destroyed Koscheck, Hughes, and Serra in the last few months. There’s no comparison between GSP or Rampage and BJ.

BJ Penn is definitely top 3. I think he’s the most talented fighter in the UFC, very versatile game at multiple weight classes. Light Heavyweight might get the most pub, but I don’t think its the strongest weight class by a long shot.

I have Silva, GSP and Penn top 3. I got Rampage after that. a focused BJ is unstoppable
