Piazza should go in as a Marlin.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:26 am
No way – an Oakland A.

Denver newspapers (home of Woody Paige) should stick to what they’re good at, snooping through athlete’s lockers (hello Kizla), and sucking up to John Elway.

@ Nick
+1
That article is such horse shit. He would have never retired after year one. Nice fluff piece to make him look better after his shirtless (gay?) escapades.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:50 am
Gary Carter is a Hall Of Famer…which proves again you don’t know baseball and he is a major douche so you are right there…as for Willie Randolph and your weak Leyland comparison…if Willie had a ring (Leyland does) he gets some more slack…Willie engineered the biggest collapse in history and then comes back and puts up the biggest stink bomb undrepressure you could ask for…the fact Willie still has a job is an absolute joke.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Oh and Paul Lukas is gay (not bashing a fact) and hates Piazza’s handling of the gay issue…he is no Met fan an real Met fan would not have cared how well he slid into 3rd base…Oh and I am fiesty today…My fucking lifeless basball team can go fuck itself…the only reason they have not lost 8 in a row is a rookie debut and Fernando Tatis
May 27th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Here’s one more thing that I hate about the Olympics… dumb sports like BMX racing are events, yet rugby is not. It’s horseshit. They could easily schedule a sevens tournament during the games. And it would be much more legitimate than many of the judged events that they allow.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:54 am
Leyland won a ring with the Tigers? Not sure if you read the post.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:57 am
I agree with the 7’s being in the olympics or even 10’s would be cool.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:58 am
TBL..I read the post..I responded to the post..and Jim Leyland has one a championship..he has won in the past…he has a track record..Willie led the team to the playoffs once two years ago…and has done nothing but lead a team to mediocrity since…is it all his fault no…but have you even payed attention the last two weeks…or the last year…he should be gone..other managers have been fired for less….I am tired of hearing he should have a job..he shouldn’t you are so wrong on this is it ridiculous…
May 27th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Roman, i know you know your Mets, but …
1997 has zero bearing on the current state of the Tigers and Mets. Both had great seasons two years ago. Both were a bit of a letdown last year – the Mets moreso due to the collapse. Both spent heavily in the offseason. The Mets are off to a mediocre start – if the Marlins weren’t playing out of their minds, few would have noticed – and the Tigers were off to an abysmal start.
SO leyland is taking no heat because, luckily, the Tribe looks ordinary and hasn’t opened up a lead, but Randolph is a bum because the Marlins are lucky?
you mean to tell me you want to strip the man of a coaching job because, from one AS break to not even the other, the mets haven’t been awesome?
May 27th, 2008 at 9:03 am
How is Gary Carter not a Hall of Famer? He was better than Pudge Fisk and slightly worse that Johnny Bench.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:04 am
In New York? I’m surprised he made it that long. Isiah fucked up everyone’s perception of what’s a fireable offense.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Say whaaaaa?
May 27th, 2008 at 9:09 am
leyland isnt taking heat because he’s been a lifelong smoker and is going to die at any minute now. writers are just taking it easy on him.
plus its easy to be distracted with the red wings and pistons still rollin.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Should I have said way worse? Bench was better in a shorter period of time. So, fine, worse than Bench.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:10 am
pssh…johnny bench sucked. if he was any good, his name woulda been johnny starter.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:11 am
TBL..its more than that…things need to change…I can’t help if Tiger fans don’t want him fired…Willie deserves to lose his job…this team has collapsed under pressure twice…last September and this May…when a turn around was needed the team played with its head up its ass..made stupid mistakes bad errors…bad baserunning mistakes and has shown no life…a managers job is to motivate and dole out accountabilty…all I have seen is them playing worse…and Willie making himself the story was the nail in the coffin…is it fair…no…the 6 million he will collects makes it fair…when you made your point last week the team lost 3 of 4 to the Nats, beat the Yanks and lost 3 to the Braves…now the have lost 4 out of 5 more with no signs of getting better…David Wright is pressing so much he is making awful mistakes, Jose Reyes has been doing OK at the plate and booting easy grounders all over the place..the young pitchers are falling apart and moral is low…this team needs a change…fire Willie and cut Delgado and lets try something…the Marlins did this in 2003 and won a championship…the Red Sox fired Grady Little after game 7 of the ALCS and won a championship..it has worked before…I don’t care about fair..I care about winning…fucking win
May 27th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Bench was like 126 OPS+ over 17 seasons compared to 19 seasons of 115 OPS+ for Carter.
Bench had 50-60 more homers in those two less years, too.
And was the best ever with the glove.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Survey says … please explain.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:13 am
oh. dear. you win. Invoking Grady Little? Wow.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Nick covered Bench, so I’ll line up the other two
Gary Carter: career OPS .774, 324 HRs (in 18 years), WARP1 123.7 (in 18 years)
Pudge Fisk: career OPS .799, 376 HRs (in 24 years), WARP1 108.3 (in 24 years)
May 27th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Carter also had a better glove. Fisk had a big HR in Game 6 of the WS. Above average for a catcher, but Carter was better.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:19 am
I wasn’t making the “Gary Carter isn’t a HOFer” case. He may very well be.
I was making the “He’s a lot worse than Bench” case.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:19 am
TBL..according to your logic…Grady Little was a winner..he went to the playoffs…he should have kept his job…How was it fair that he lost his job after making it to the 10th inning of game 7 of the ALCS…my team is two years removed…so yes..I am invoking his name…you use the race argument in your post last week..it is not about race..it is about winning…not everything in this fucking country is about race..this team is supposed to win…they have 3 all stars in the line up…a Cy young winner and two 15 game winners in the rotation and an All Star closer…they suck…the play bad baseball..they don’t hit and don’t field…someone or more that one person..a whole mess in my opinion must pay…I can’t fire Luis Castillo or Beltran or David Wright…Willie is the leader….goodbye
May 27th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Nick…its not fair…Bench is a different level of HOF than Carter it is like saying Clemente is shit becaue he was not Babe Ruth…
May 27th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Roman – Based on your logic, other managers that MUST get fired tomorrow:
-Rockies
-Indians
-whatever team leads the MLB in errors
-whatever teams leads the MLB in Caught Stealing (oh shit, it’s the Rays!)
May 27th, 2008 at 9:21 am
eric wedge can stay. it’s not his fault travis hafner stopped taking roids.
i blame selig.
SELIG!!!!
May 27th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Whoa. I didn’t start a race argument. Willie did, and then the papers and radio buffoons hung with it all week. I’ll ask again why aren’t Tigers fans clamoring for Leyland’s head? The teams are in the exact same scenario.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Gary Carter used Soul Glo
May 27th, 2008 at 9:24 am
I’ll have some indy pics posted sooner then later today…I think it was the nicest day out of the 5 times I’ve gone now. Overall, the race was pretty boring, and worse yet there wasn’t too many rowdies, or at least in my section. Although the people around me probably thought I was the designated jackass for their section (never bring vodka to the race).
For the first time ever, I will get to use some “sources” on what a bitch Danica is to her fans prerace during the week leading up to Sunday. Not gonna lie, I’ve always wanted to say that
May 27th, 2008 at 9:26 am
do tell
May 27th, 2008 at 9:26 am
because Leyland has a better mustache?
May 27th, 2008 at 9:27 am
TBL..fine….do you watch Mets games? everyday? do you see all the mistakes that are made? do you see how they play? you are coming in on your high horse just using saying its not fair…I never claimed it was fair…but when has managerial hirings and firings make sense…this team needs a spark..a wakeup call…and it is not happening…as for the Rockies and Indians…both of them made the playoffs last year..Willie did not…and after last season I had no problem with Willie staying..I like Willie but this is the same shit that lead to the demise last year..it is time to make changes because this team is not turning it around…if you watched (no I don’t watch other TV shows..I watch the Mets every night they are on)…you would see this team needs something to happen Fire Willie and cut Delgado…I can have Jose Valentin come back from rehab and hit .240 and its 22 points higher than Delgado
May 27th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Leyland has a way better mustache.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:30 am
TBL..if Jim Leyland was the Manager of the Mets under the same circumstances he would be burned in effigey..ask Bobby Valentine how it feels…or Davey Johnson? It happens…some one made a great point up top…in Detroit the Red Wings are playing for a cup and the Pistons are playing in the Eastern Conference Finals…right now the Tigers are (as usual) on the back burner until the end of June
May 27th, 2008 at 9:33 am
@RWH
Waaaaaaaaait until after the All Star break. Seriously. I am in the exact same boat. I want to go napalm. I want to spaz out and completely lose it. Then I think about the long road each team must travel from here on in order to make the playoffs. It is a long road. It will work out in the end. Just take ‘er easy, dude.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Roman, you watch Mets games over Gossip Girl!?!?!?!?? Weird-O!!!!!~!
/TBL
May 27th, 2008 at 9:35 am
One more question I have…if now is too soon to Fire Willie…please give me a date I am allowed to actually be fair in asking for a man to lose his job? Give me the day and if the Mets are turned around then I will repent in whatever way is deemed good enough…In the real world if there are issues they need to be nipped in the bud early…before a disaster happens…let me know when I can stop the disaster…
May 27th, 2008 at 9:35 am
@Rome: Yeah, I’m not saying Carter isn’t a HOF. He’s borderline. I think Fisk has a slightly better case.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:36 am
The issue, again, is that the Mets have way too much talent to suck this bad. Way too much talent.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Just from having seen Carter as both an Expo and a Met (and seeing him kick the Phillies’ ass all those years), I’d say he’s a HOFer. His doucheness was far more pronounced during his stint in New York, but I do believe his play puts him in Cooperstown.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:38 am
OK..Maggs..you gave me a date…I will wait until after the All-Star break the Mets are 6.5 back on May 26th…I will wait to Mid July…but I guaran-fucking-tee you that I am right…but fine I will wait..on Major League Jerk (PLUG!) I will spend this week breaking down the team and offering solutions (resonable ones not trade Heilman and Alou’s corpse for CC Sabathia)but I will leave the future former Met Manager out of it.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I am still seeing a D-Snake. All I can ask for now is a quick and painless death. I will caution any of you who may dare to bet with Hef, make damn sure you win.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Nick..all three are in so the conversation is muted…I am still pissed Jim Rice is not in…and he is getting new love from the VOPRies out there but it might be too late.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:41 am
Yeah, Nick, you sunt.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:43 am
@Roman: Rice is getting hate from the VORPies. He is not a HOFer.
He’ll get in this year, though. He just barely missed it last year.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:43 am
@Maggs: I see the Mich logo.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Any olympic event where a judge is involved should be abolished. How can someone subjectively pick a winner be justified? Why not just have Trumph, Paula and Mario Lopez be judges.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Rice is not a HOFer.
Mags, I still see the beautiful snake logo.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Nick…I thought the only thing he was donw on was OBP? Everything else checked out and there wasn’t a more valuable left fielder during his era right?
May 27th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Think both of those guys went to a WS, which helped them stick around longer.
The TIgers have perhaps more talent, and suck worse.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Roman: his home stats vs. his away stats are appalling. If he didn’t play at Fenway, he would have been Luis Gonzales.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:47 am
So fuckin’ fire Jim Leyland then too. He obviously has trouble communicating to his players that there should be a certain sense of urgency even early in the season.
Also, smoking is bad for you.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:47 am
RWH, you want Rice in the HOF? Based on your anti-Willie stance, I thought you hated black guys?
May 27th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Hef..I am looking right now…interesting…
May 27th, 2008 at 9:50 am
Damn right it’s interesting. Everything I say is interesting.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:50 am
He was a product of Fenway and the Boston media.
Plus, there may not have been a better left fielder, but I think you almost have to group LF, 1B, and DH together. The defensive value of all 3 is nil (obviously less so for DH, but not much less). And he was considered a below average fielder anyway.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Hef…Hold your horses…I am only interested in Jim Rice and who the bast Prime Minster in British history is and you have only enlightened me on one subject
May 27th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Not Tony Blair or Margaret Thatcher.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Churchill>>>>>Chamberlin
May 27th, 2008 at 9:54 am
holy fuck
May 27th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Has to be CHurchill over Chamberlin. Neville played the appeasement card with Hitler, and therefor must be looked down upon.
May 27th, 2008 at 10:02 am
benjamin disreli anally fists Churchill and Chamberlain.
/only saying that because i listened to Disreli Gears by Cream yesterday afternoon
May 27th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Disraeli was good. Had the career length to be accurately analyzed. My favorite (and the only) Jewish prime minister. I’ll take Disraeli over Churchill for all time. Churchill had that one big war, but Disraeli was consistent over his whole career.
May 27th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I am a fan of Viscount Palmerston…because I am down with a Viscount…
/bad joke

Jodie Foster is a lesbian? Why didn’t I know this when she was still super hot?
May 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
speaking of abortion…ray allen has been playing like someone stuck a clothes hanger and a turkey baster full of bleach up his culo.
May 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am

Wade Boggs: Pitt the Elder!!
Barney: Lord Palmerston!!!
Wade Boggs: Pitt the Elder!!!! [pokes Barney]
Barney: Okay, you asked for it, bud! [punches him out]
