Beckham, From Wayyyy Downtown … Bang
Soccer, Video May 27th. 2008, 5:15pmThey’re calling this a 70-yard strike, and it’s quite impressive. At first glance, we thought the opponent had pulled its goalie; nope, the crafty Becks just caught the bloke out of position. Unprofessional Foul compares this to a 1996 goal Beckham netted against Wimbledon, which was actually more impressive.

Umm, the announcer clearly says “There’s an empty net” once Becks touched the ball. Still a nice goal though.

in the words of marv albert “eeehhyesssssss!”

The 1996 one was a lot better.
Gonzo, the net was empty because the goalie was out of position on the corner, not because he had been pulled. I think that’s what TBL was getting at.

The goalie was at mid-field, no where near the goal. I wouldn’t call it out of position considering he was playing offense.

Lame. Empty net.
The ‘96 goal was quite nice though.

Bloke? You are foreign aren’t you, TBL.

This one: moronic goalie playing up in extra time to get the equalizer, Beckham clearly sees empty net, no defender realizes he needs to challenge him, ball bounces.
That one: PERFECT strike from the midway line; goalie, playing a little up, is caught off guard by superb touch, and still can almost get to it.
This one: Eh.
That one: Probably top 50 soccer goals all-time.

That does it – I’m buying MLS season tickets.

Meant to mention that if the goalie is up there, he’d better haul ass back to the net. I’ve never seen a keeper take a corner before, never seen one past midfield on anything but the rare keeper run for a score, which is brilliant but also a touch unsportsmanlike when done.
This all points to Beckham taking advantage of the stupidity of the Kansas City Wizards and scoring a meaningless, fairly simple goal. Big whoop.

Keepers get pulled forward on corners when teams are down 1 late in the game all the time.

@fetch: Yeah, it does make sense to get as many in the box as possible, I realize. Doesn’t mean I’d advocate it or like it.
I haven’t watched much soccer of late, either, but in a Champions League game or any other where goal differential matters, I would assume this doesn’t happen. The simplest mistake and someone whips one into your net.

@Rockabye: that would depend on which leg they were playing. If it’s the second leg and you were down on goal differential, it would not be an unheard of action.

Who the hell gives a crap about soccer?

If I had to guess, Id say 4 billion people or so

Occasionally, a keeper will even score when he is up in the box. This happened in the Norwegian League last year. I just happened to be watching because I was living in Oslo and there was nothing else on TV. The keeper is American (Adin Brown) and he tied the game 4 minutes into extra time. The crowd was going mental.
