Athletes and the Dicey Posing-For-Playboy Debate
Media Gossip/Musings, Olympics, Track & Field, Women's Sports May 27th. 2008, 8:55am
It certainly isn’t an easy decision females must grapple with: Do I pose for Playboy now, while I’m in the prime of my career, where I can probably cash a bigger check from Hugh Hefner and enjoy a slightly larger PR bump, or do I wait until my playing days are over (or my best days are behind me), and use it as a springboard to bring me back into the spotlight, whereupon I become marketable again? Tennis player Ashley Harkleroad’s decision is clearly the former – she’s only 23 – but after the jump, we examine the decisions of other athletes and sports “personalities.”
Ashley Harkleroad, tennis, August 2008: Brilliant timing. Never has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event; hell, never been part of the discussion. She will be relentlessly discussed this week in France.
Amanda Beard, swimming, July 2007: Her Olympic career was over, and she got a significant PR bump from it, including some sort of gig on The Best Damn Sports Show.
Lisa Guerrero, media, Jan. 2006: Former cheerleader and actress, so this was not a total surprise; considering how tremendous (NSFW, natch) the photos were, we’re surprised she didn’t get hired by ESPN. But she did get scooped up by Inside Edition.
Amy Acuff, Sept. 2004: Tremendous tie-in to complete her Olympic career. Definitely had people interested in her summer Olympic events.
Gabrielle Reece, Jan. 2001: Her famed volleyball career had pretty-much ended, and this seemed like a “I’m still young and attractive!” plea. She was 31.
Katarina Witt, Dec. 1998: Two-time Olympic gold medalist. Her career had been – bad pun alert – on ice for about three years before posing, and she was only 33. Impeccable post-career timing because she’ll forever be thought of as the cute German Figure skating champ, and not the nude former athlete.
Some of Hef’s future targets?
Serena Williams, tennis player. It would not surprise us at all if caved this year or next, and not just because of this photo. She seems to relish fame.
Anna Kournikova, former tennis player. Still has it, obviously. It will be a massive seller – we’d venture a guess that it would be Top Five of all-time – even though she never won anything. About to turn 27, so plenty of time left.
Natalie Gulbis, golf. One win under her belt, so there’s a chance it might not happen. Still can’t tell if she’s a savvy marketer or likes the attention. That’s a fine line.
Candace Parker, basketball. Way too successful for it to happen … although someone probably said that about Witt.
Jennie Finch, softball. Never seemed to crave the spotlight, and she’s married, so don’t hold your breath. (Though Guerrero was married to Scott Erickson when she posed at 41.)
Tanith Belbin, figure skating. Still in the prime of her career, but if this award is any indication, Hef will come calling.
This chart was handy.

all these girls now are not even baring all, they have one breast covered and you never see any bush, they are glorified maxim pics basically.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Wow, TBL, you must hate Asians if you don’t include Christina Kim.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Natalie Gulbis!

Clown, that’s perhaps the worst female athlete photo ever unearthed. well done.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:15 am

May 27th, 2008 at 9:19 am

Which is why to this day Katarina Witt is still the gold standard of nudie athletes…that shoot was fantastic in this reporter’s opinion

it makes a pretty big difference.

Doing degrading things for money and publicity I can understand, but does Playboy really do that much anymore? (Unless ESPN agrees to trot her out there on every show they can)
May 27th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Don’t Disney and Playboy have a working partnership like ESPN and ABC?
May 27th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Nah, she’s a slut. I wouldn’t want to see that.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Not sure who said, but every time I see that Serena pic I remember the comment “it looks like she squashed a duck in her ass” and laugh. +1 to you, whoever you are.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Oh sweet Jeebus, thank you or reminding me of those Katarina Witt photos. Drool-inducing.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Get Gulbis and Rawson together.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I vote for a pictorial of the Women of the WNBA.
May 27th, 2008 at 9:41 am
Is a female athlete a bigger whore for selling out to Playboy or to ESPN? I say ESPN.

“all these girls now are not even baring all, they have one breast covered and you never see any bush, they are glorified maxim pics basically.” Sponge
Winner winner.

Harkleroad got pounded by Serena on Sunday. “Relentlessly discussed” is probably an exaggeration, especially when there are equally hot or hotter tennis players who are successful on the court (and don’t have to take off their clothes off it).

/ too late, can’t get it out of my head.
May 27th, 2008 at 10:08 am
@spencer: Whoops. Sorry about that. Sorry about that everyone.
May 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
she did work for bspn, indirectly.
she was hired by bspn’s parent company, abc, to butcher monday night football. if someone stole her notebook i’m not sure she could ever have said a word. she was totally scripted.

You have to go with now because most people are thinking, “who the hell is Ashley Harkleroad?”.
May 27th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Hmm… Darren Rovell did a very similar story, and linked to an article by the Orlando Sentinel’s Chris Olds, which has a list of “athletes” that have appeared in Playboy since 1998. I put athletes in quotes, because half of them are WWE personalities(btw, did you know Candace Michelle was in the WWE? I didn’t; but then I haven’t watched wrestling in about 10-12 years).
May 27th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Good link, Bruce. Personally, I don’t count WWE people as athletes, but truthfully, when i went down the list, I didn’t recognize half of those wrestler names.
