Can’t Pick Against France (Update: France wins on – what else? – questionable PK call, 1-0)

In our prediction for what turned out to be an epic Argentina-Germany quarterfinal match, we were burned by choosing with our heart (Argentina) over our head (Germany), and we’re not letting that happen again.
Wait.
Check that, we were burned by the tomfoolery of the clown formerly employed as Argentina’s coach; could his substitutions have been any worse? Argentina had that game, dammit.
So France and Portugal kickoff in about an hour, with the winner to meet Italy Sunday in the World Cup final.
Let the truth be known: We’re pulling for Portugal. The Greg Louganis boys (no, we’re not hinting anyone is gay, but rather very, very skilled at the art of diving) play a lovely brand of soccer. In terms of individual talent, we think Cristiano Ronaldo has been the best player in the tournament thus far (edging out Italy’s keeper, Buffon, and France’s Zidane).
But as we saw with Italy, defense wins, and France has the edge here. We’d actually take Portugal in a shootout, but we don’t think it’ll get that far. Think 2-1 France.

(Update: Zidane converted a PK in the first half for a 1-0 France lead. The foul appeared legit…the Portugal defender swept the leg of a France player in an attempt to prevent an open shot. Portugal had dominated play to that point, and continues to do so. Ronaldo has been simply unreal on the wings, often dribbling around or through multiple defenders. And he’s got blazing fast speed, too. It’s unfortunate his temmates cannot wriggle free from the tough France defense in the box.)
(Update II: France holds on despite being outplayed, for the 1-0 victory, setting up one helluva defensive World Cup final.)
