Kobe and Vanessa: The Soap Opera Never Stops
NBA May 29th. 2008, 1:30pm
We made passing reference to the whole Kobe-cheerleader-affair rumor into the Roundup Tuesday and thought nothing of it. Two years ago it’s a story we would have been all over from the outset, but in these post-Buzz times, where more than a handful of rascals lay in the bushes and patiently wait for you to get something wrong or screw up so they can leap and shout YOU WERE WRONG! NO CREDIBILITY! we’ve gotten a little cautious. Perhaps too cautious, in this case.
There’s a rather detailed recap at Deadspin of the whole chain of events that began nine days ago at The Dirty. The jist: Kobe Bryant may or may not have cheated on his wife again, this time, allegedly with Lakers cheerleader Vanessa Curry, who is mysteriously no longer on the team. Supposedly, photos of the two are being peddled to tabloids.
It is undeniable – Kobe’s wife is sexy as hell. Also undeniable – since he married her, his personal life has enduring nothing but turmoil. And just as his professional career is enjoying an uptick – the Lakers on the cusp of their first post-Shaq trip to the finals … his personal life threatens to trip him up again.
2001: Kobe marries 18-year-old Vanessa and only 12 people are present. His parents, who quit speaking to him once he and Vanessa grew close, do not attend, nor do his sisters or agent.
2003: Six months after his first child is born, and he has reconciled with his parents, Kobe is accused of sexual assault in Colorado. Kobe admits to cheating and gives his wife an 8-carat, $4.3 million ring. Charges were eventually dropped.
2004: Just as Kobe has put the sexual assault charges behind him, and the Lakers are entering the post-Shaq era … Vanessa accuses Kobe’s former teammate, Karl Malone, of hitting on her. (Classic Mailman: “I’m hunting young Mexican girls.”)
2008: Kobe’s wife curses out a freelancer who had blogged about a brief chat the two had recently at a game. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a story; but when it happens the same week that rumors are surfacing about Kobe cheating on his wife, well … it seems somewhat suspect.

Bitch is crazy. Simple as that
May 29th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
I was hoping this wouldn’t come up. Dang.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Sweet kids. I heard they went to the prom together.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
So Mr. Lead this deserves a post of his own but winning the MVP doesn’t? Maybe you should return to making posts about LeBron James and how much you miss him… or a post about how great was Manu in game 4 (we are still waiting…)
May 29th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Another piece of evidence in support of Kobe being a poor excuse for a human being, an awful teammate, and a horrible father.

May 29th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
I figured you needed a double post. For emphasis.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
LeBron is much more faithful than Kobe was at this stage of his career.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Bitch is gonna get paid. Simple as that
/fixed… she’s earned after being humiliated publicly, IMO.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
i love Kobe as a player. Off the court, i could care less what happens between him and his wife.
about the cheerleader, it is fucked up how she left right before the playoffs started
May 29th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
TBL, you’re speculating about speculation. And no one really cares about this anyway.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Whoops. Forgot to say, “except Nick P who hates Kobe with every ounce of his being.”
May 29th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Amen, her lack of perspective and bolting right before the playoffs highlights her immaturity and her squad is better off without her.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Yeah, you’ve really been too cautious on this whole thing.

May 29th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Except nick P
May 29th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
@mike: +1
May 29th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Maybe he got the two Vanessas mixed up?
May 29th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
CRM, didn’t he take Brandy to his prom?
May 29th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I agree Nick, the man has made some curious choices in his life, weird dude, weird wife.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
At least this chick would have been worth it.
Colorado girl was heinous.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
@Mike B- Yes he did.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Kobe’s MVP post got a headline.
Manu was “invisible” in game four. Did you miss this?
May 29th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
I agree with Irish. This isn’t news. If any average Joe cheats on his wife it isn’t news so why is this.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Why can’t he just settle down with one homely chick, like LeBron?
May 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Wow a headline. Now i’m impressed…
May 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
@Mike B – Oh yeah.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
The Kobe hate, combined with the LeBron love on this site, is quite irritating.
I suggest you hate Kobe less and like LeBron less.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Any more conclusions you’d like to jump to, CH4OS?
May 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
@jb49ers: Kobe was the next MJ, has household celebrity name recognition, was charged with rape previously, publicly admitted to cheatingon his wife, and is the current NBA MVP. Kobe > average Joe
May 29th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
And Hillary less and McCain less…
May 29th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
TBL you did the Kobe MVP post in the damn roundup. We all know if Lebron would of won, 5-10 posts of straight slob on his knob
May 29th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
But Obama more!!!!!

I vote for more Monta Ellis posts!
May 29th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Still doesn’t exactly make an “alleged” affair anybody’s business but their own.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Again, welcome back Mike. Not Obama more. I’m a John Edwards fan. Obama is nothing compared to Edwards.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Fucking atheists.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
@Mike NYC: 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the content the media covers is nobody’s business of their own. We will still read it though.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
/fixed for PurdueMatt
May 29th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
CH4OS needs a jump to conclusions mat.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
99.9%? Where are you getting your news, TMZ?
Thanks for the welcome back, Hef, I know you missed me terribly.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Kobe is the best player in the NBA, but he’s J.J. Redick when it comes to nailing tail on the side or keeping his sunt wife in check.
May 29th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
I would fuck the bitch right out of Kobe’s wife…oh and I don’t care about the rest of this story
May 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
It is just Kobe’s “thing”
May 29th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Any normal broad would leave the dude after 2 alleged affairs, but this broad just wants the money and glam of being married to one of the 3 best basketball players in the world. But the broad is smokin hot… well both Vanessas are.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Is that spence?
And the real austin carr?
May 29th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
It was so much more fun when Mike was gone. Irish? You out there?
May 29th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
@Mike: 99.999999999999999999999% was an exaggeration; it’s ok to do that every now and then to get a point across. Much of what is covered by the media is not anybody’s business except the parties involved. Watch some local, regional, and/or national news programs (network or cable) tonight and notice how much is not your business.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Maggs, more than anything I missed your constant pseudo-intellectualism. Good to have it back.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Irish, your comment #31 was pure gold and pure truth.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Reminder: Huge Lakers fan from 1985 to about the day the Shaq left. Stayed true through Van Exel, ‘Chise and Anthony Peeler. Didn’t instantly hate the Lakers when Shaq left, but Kobe kept running into these mini-dramas that yeah, i stopped being a fan.
He’s awesome, no doubt, and I like when he’s cocky on the floor because he knows nobody can stop him. But if you guys dont think there’s a story here – uh, his wife finds out this is true and decides to leave him the week of the finals; remember they dont have a pre-nup – don’t try to say this won’t affect him. He may not appear human on the court, but anyone would be affected by shit like this.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Interesting. The blog of the freelance writer that wrote about being cussed out by Vanessa Bryant is no longer, well, a blog. The post is gone as is the blog itself.
http://ridethefastlane.blogspot.com/2008/05/i-just-got-cussed-out-by-kobe-bryants.html
May 29th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
TBL…Kobe cares about one thing…Kobe…he will be fine
May 29th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
TBL – I think you’ve got it right, but the way you’re getting there is wrong. This is news because he’s famous, and one of the best basketball players of all time. It’s not news because it may or may not affect his game. Didn’t he perform exceedingly well while the Colorado trial was going on? That’s not a rhetorical question…I seem to remember he did.
He’s famous. Famous people know that while they get paid by fans (directly or indirectly) they also get scrutinized by those same fans. It’s life, whether MikeNYC refuses to believe it or not.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
In real news…/threadjack
Vancouver Canucks Defenseman Luc Bourdon is dead at 20 following a motorcycle accident. (In french)
May 29th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
see..romans comment is a perfect example of how people see Kobe. People think he is selfish for what reason? bitching at teammates? what the fuck is it MJ fucking yelled, talked shit about all his teammates so dont give me that Kobe only cares about Kobe bullshit
We all think we know what happens in these athletes lives just from what a fucking website says.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
behold the magic of Google’s cache.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I don’t care but at the same time this could have an impact on the games themselves as TBL just pointed out so there is reason to speak about it, unless its untrue, which would suck for anyone reporting it (sorry TBL)
May 29th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Why are the Bulls in a time machine and hiring Doug Collins?
May 29th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
@irish: No one would argue that MJ wasn’t selfish. He definitely was.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
C’mon, irish – Kobe is as selfish as MJ was. That’s why he’s the greatest since MJ.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Atlanta, if you want to make Kobe Bryant’s love life your business, more power to you. Me, I don’t find it all that relevant.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
@Mike NYC
Does that mean I am dumb? Us liberals are FAR too stupid to pronounce a ps combo let alone know what it means. Oh and fuck off. Maybe you should write about womens rugby or something less lame if possible.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Ps combo? Women’s rugby?
Dumb, angry, and confused – what a guy!
May 29th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Guys, no personal attacks. It says so right here at the TBL Commenter Bill of Rights.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Don’t think you can compare the two – he had Shaq back then. And i think Mailman and Payton, too.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Like the Mailman and G Payton helped that much….what a joke that is
May 29th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
He started it.
/8 year old
May 29th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I am curious, though, Maggs, what a ps combo is, and what women’s rugby has to do with anything?
I coulda sworn my guest post was about the NFL.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
@jibbles – Sad news, but did you have to post a link to a story written entirely in french?
May 29th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Arghghghghhg, Shaq had Kobe too, it wasn’t all Kobe had Shaq, I am beyond tired of hearing that.
Payton and Mailman could barely move that year, I think a possible rape conviction would be much more distracting then cheating on his wife.
Kobe will still tear shit up in the Finals and the Lakers are winning the championship.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
@cbh- exactly. the possibility of going to prison for rape would bother the shit out of anyone. Kobe still won the title that year
and yes, the Lakers will win it this year as well
May 29th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
@sportsgal – Here’s the link from TSN
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=239196&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main
May 29th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
@irish: They lost in the Finals that year.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
@Mike NYC
I was referring to the ps letter combo in your “pseudo-intellectualism” crack (good one by the way). Oh and I had seen TBL mention a commentor was published recently when they wrote about womens rugby. I figured it was you in your hiatus.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
thanks Nick P. Kobe is still better than Lebron
May 29th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
@irish
I agree 100% LeGlobal just shoots a bunch.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
@irish: He’s not. He’ll also lose to the C’s.
May 29th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
@nick p- ill take that bet. one month or two, you pick
May 29th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I wouldn’t rally behind the Celtics if I were you Nick
May 29th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
An athlete cheating on his wife with a hot young girl??? No way!!
May 29th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Ohhhhh irish skinned his smoke wagons!! Nick P??? You there?
May 29th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
He’s in the NBA. I guarantee he has groupies in every city. Hasn’t Magic Johnson (or Shawn Kemp) taught these guys anything?
May 29th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Nick P won’t even get to make that beat, the Celtics are losing to the Pistons.
I would be willing to bet all my future earnings that the Celtics couldn’t beat the Lakers.
If they do end up somehow winning the title I am guessing they will set the record for most playoff losses by an eventual champion.
May 29th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Irish…my comment was not meant to demean Kobe…he is what he is…he is a focused dude, has gone through a marriage crisis before and performed better when it was going on. If he had not, then maybe there is concern but the dude is very self contained. Most of the great ones are. I have said consistently, that he is the best player in basketball. You are not that if outside things distract you. If he viewed his marriage as an important part of his life he wouldn’t be fucking other women.
May 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
or even just “most playoff losses”
May 29th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
@roman- okay, we know that he cheated on his wife with the Colorado thing. this cheerleader thing, probably fucking another bullshit story to make Kobe look bad. Could be true, but im giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one.
you said ” If he viewed his marriage as an important part of his life he wouldn’t be fucking other women”.
you are still going off of something that happened 5 years ago. He has two kids now and maybe he views his “family” a little different
May 29th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Again why is this news? Is this site gonna become tmz? Only thing that matters to me with my Kobe is what he does on the court. Magic cheated, MJ cheated, hell AK-47’s wife gives him permission to cheat. Like Barkley said basketball players are’t role models they are basketball players.
May 29th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Irish, possibly…I really don’t care…the point that TBL is making is that this will efect him in the playoffs…my point is it won’t…I made a one word statement I really wasn’t trying to pshychanalyize Kobe..but from what I have seen he has the ability to tune it out…I am not going for the right or wrong of the story…If it is false, he will ignore the story, if it is true, he does not place a value on his marriage that it falling apart will effect his play…
May 29th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
i hear ya
