Live-Blogging Mixed Martial Arts’ Primetime Network Debut
MMA, TV May 31st. 2008, 8:45pm
Welcome to the live-blog of the first ever nationally broadcast Mixed Martial Arts card in the history of the modern world. My name is Cousins of Ron Mexico (Seriously, it’s on my driver’s license.) and I’ll be your host for the evening. You might know me from such live-blogs as “The Masters Live-Blog Live-Blog (Seriously): Round 1 and Round 2” (Featuring ESPN’s Jason Sobel).
Tonight we’re coming live from my living room with some friends, some beer, some Gus Johnson and some more beer. I’m at the top of my game tonight, folks. I didn’t even crack my first beer until 6:30. That’s right – I mean business. So jump, read a little more preview and then get ready to hit the refresh button.
Aside form the scary man pictured above (Kimbo Slice) the other faintly familiar face you’ll be seeing tonight belongs to Gina Carano. Or if you’re fan of American Gladiators, you’ll recognize her as Crush.
She’s basically the face of Women’s MMA (Though I would have chosen Kyra Gracie). Bad news though – the face of Women’s MMA didn’t make weight. Carano weighed in at 144.5 yesterday – 3.5 pounds too heavy. The fight is still going to go on tonight, but come on. Who doesn’t make weight? Why didn’t she just play ping pong, like Jesse Taylor?
Of course, I doubt Elite XC cares about Carano making weight – tonight is all about spectacle. A guy famous for beating people up in backyards is headlining the card in Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson. Gus Johnson will be excitedly calling the fights. Busta Rhymes is preforming to kick off the show in lieu of the National Anthem. (Unless he preforms Pass The Courvoisier because I consider that my own personal National Anthem.)
A big thanks goes out to Oh No Romo who has provided quick introductions to the fights on the main card this evening. If you want to contact me personally (Or send tips for use tomorrow!) you can hit up the bat line at alumnigonzo@gmail.com.
8:51 – Completely unrelated to MMA, we’ll be switching to Finals of Lord Stanley’s Cup during commercials. It’s what Sidney Crosby wants us to do.
8:56 – Just a guess, but I don’t think Dana White is rooting for this to go well tonight.
9:00 – Welcome to Saturday Night Fights! I can barely lift my beer with all these goosebumps.
9:01 – Phil Baroni looks just like Jason from The Hills.
9:03 – The Fight Network in Canada, eh? Really?
9:03 – And lets hear it for the Elite XC sexy ladies of the night!
9:04 – From my buddy JBug Kyle: “Getting Frank Shamrock is like asking for Nick Lachey and getting Drew Lachey.”
9:09 – From Oh No Romo:
Brett Rogers vs. Jon Murphy
One of Elite XC’s rising stars has a chance to shine in front of a national television audience. Brett Rogers takes his 6-0 MMA record into the cage tonight when he faces Jon Murphy.
Rogers made a huge splash in Elite XC when he knocked out James Thompson at the Elite XC event in February. Now the Minnesota fighter has a chance to go 3-0 in Elite XC and become one of the elite fighters in the heavyweight division.
Murphy made his Elite XC debut last summer for a ShoXC, defeating Dave Huckaba via a second round knockout.
9:12 – No fingers in the orifices. Aww! You got it, Frank! While we’re here, Frank Shamrock is a excitable little guy isn’t he?
9:14 – Finally! A new Street Fighter game! And we’ve got some Ugly Kid Joe in the house.
9:15 – Big Black Security represents.
9:19 -Syracuse? Never heard of it.
/Get a haircut, hippie!
9:22 – The fighters’ entrance music is introduced like a music video.
9:27 – Here’s our first fight of the night. Promptly starting at 9:30.
9:28 – Rogers drops Murphy. Murphy could use a pick-me-up. Some cocaine perhaps?
When you give it all up and walk away from a promising career in tire repair… I’ll just say it warms the heart to see Rogers succeed.
9:44 – This Baroni dude is a jackass. I’ll reiterate that he looks just like Jason Wahler.
9:46 – It’s official (and it has been since 9:01) this is a freaking circus sideshow. It’s like the WWF.
9:49 – Yes! The jackass goes down! What an idiot. That just made everyone in the living room happy. Something about his undeserved sense of self-importance. Nothing like rooting for a native New Yorker to get his ass kicked.
9:51 – So far dumb nicknames – “The Man of Faith” and “New York Bad Ass” – are 0-2 this evening. And a guy gave up a career in the tire industry. And we’ve had a Rob Dyrdek sighting in the ring after the first fight. Good times all around.
9:54 – Just realized I forgot Oh No Romo’s preview for the last fight, so here’s the next one with a bonus post-fight-preview of the last fight:
Gina Carano vs. Kaitlin Young- Women’s MMA Bout
Not only will it be the first time MMA is on network television, but it will be the first time for women’s MMA on the national television stage.
Gina Carano is considered by many to be the face of women’s MMA. It’s her chance to bring women’s MMA into the spotlight. Carano has a chance to keep her undefeated record alive when she faces Minnesota product, Kaitlin Young.
Carano experienced a setback yesterday when she failed to make weight for her fight with Young. Carano weighed in at 144.5 lbs. All fighters are allowed a one lbs. allowance. She will have to forfeit 12.5 percent of her earnings.
Carano has a 5-0 MMA record and is the top female fighter in Elite XC. She defeated Tonya Evinger via submission in the first round of an Elite XC event, last September.
Young is making her Elite XC debut. She’s spent most of her time fighting for BodogFight. Young lost to Sara Schneider at a BodogFight event in February.
Women’s MMA hasn’t been as popular among the hardcore MMA fans. Tonight could very well decide if women’s MMA is here to stay or not. If it doesn’t work out, Carano always has American Gladiators to fall back on.
Phil Baroni vs. Joey Villasenor
Is this do or die for Baroni? The ‘New York Bad Ass‘ has lost two straight fights and now has a 10-9 career MMA record. In his last fight, Baroni lost to Kala Hosa via TKO in the fifth round of an ICON title fight.
To make this short, Baroni gassed after the first round and it was all about Hosa. Lucky for Baroni, this will only be a three round fight.
Unfortunately, he has to deal with Villasenor. The Greg Jackson product has won his last two fights, including a knockout victory against Ryan Jensen at Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Le, in March.
This is a must-win for Baroni. Villasenor is tough, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Baroni get an early round knockout.
9:56 – There you have it – Gina Carano’s father is a Teddy Bear. Her mother must be vicious.
10:02 – I’ve been waiting all night to see two ladies fight. It would be better if it were Foxy Boxing, but whatever.
10:04 – Gina Carano wins the pretty contest. A little makeup wouldn’t have hurt Kaitlin Young.
10:09 – Glen Carano in attendance – Elite XC gets all the big stars!
From Lauren: “I hope she can put her fame aside for this fight.”
10:10 – The women only fight 3-minute rounds?
10:12 – They’re both gassed. Women are weak.
From Mike: “Honestly, how often do you vacuum more than 3-minutes a day?”
10:16 – Fight through it so we can see you get your ass kicked 1 more round!
10:17 – We’re getting a third round of ass-kicking from Carano That was a nasty beating. Crush did good, eh?
On another note – Gus Johnson is out of control. He said something along the lines of “She got punched in the nose which will make you tear up and your nose bleed.” Between Gus and the Canadian dude… Come on. This announcing team is out of control.
10:21 – Gina Carano has amazing hand speed. More importantly, Mickey’s Malt Liquor (Get Stung!) is a sponsor!
10:24 – Just rewound on the DVR to see the golfball on Young’s face – awesome!
10:28 – From Oh No Romo
Scott Smith vs. Robbie Lawler- Middleweight Title Bout
Two former UFC fighters go head-to-head for the EXC Middleweight championship. Smith made his Elite XC debut in February, when he defeated Kyle Noke in just seven seconds of the second round. Smith has won two straight fights since his loss to Ed Herman at UFC 72. Smith could score the biggest win of his career tonight if he can defeat Robbie Lawler.
First, though, Smith has to defeat Lawler. Lawler is on a four fight win streak. Last September, the ‘Ruthless’ one defeated Murilo Rua via a third round TKO to win the Elite XC Middleweight title. This will be Lawler’s first title defense.
Expect these two to come out swinging tonight. Of Smith’s 13 career wins, 11 of them have come via TKO or knockout. Lawler has 12 wins of TKO or knockout, out of his 15 career wins.
10:29 – Prezbo and P Diddy: A combination 5 years in the making.
10:31 – At what point in the locker room did Gina Carano and Scott Smith get their voices mixed up?
10:34 – Quick knockouts in the first two fights; two girls in a nasty beat down for the third fight; Dana White just kicked his dog.
10:38 – If this fight isn’t done in 3 minutes Kimbo Slice is going to beat them both up.
10:41 – Does Gus Johnson keep saying “cupcake?” Or “Cut kick?” Either way – what?
10:45 – “Punch, punch, punch!” Thanks, Gus.
10:47 – “Cupcake!” Smith has broken ribs. In case you were curious.
10:51 – For what it’s worth, this is a hell of a fight. That is a heeeee-yuge gash on Lawler’s head.
10:55 – Gus, keep Anderson Silva’s name the f*** out of your mouth.
10:56 – First laboriously, now cerebralness? That’s not even a word. Is it?
10:58 – “Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit!” Umm… yup.
11:04 – You can’t tell a doctor twice you can’t see – it’s the law. (Stolen from Mike)
11:06 – I’ve never seen a No Contest. Are they all that good of fights?
11:08 – From Oh No Romo:
Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson
Ever heard of Kevin Ferguson a.k.a. Kimbo Slice? Slice is squaring off against James Thompson, a fighter who is known for having a glass jaw. Seven of eight losses for Thompson have come by way of TKO. Thompson has only two wins in his last eight fights and is on a two fight losing streak.
Thompson could very well be the next KO victim in Ferguson’s young MMA career. Ferguson is 2-0 and has punched his way to those victories. His MMA debut lasted 20 seconds. Ferguson defeated Bo Cantrell, a sub-500 fighter who hasn’t won a fight in almost two years.
In February, Ferguson destroyed Tank Abbott, a former UFC fighter past his prime . Slice scored the knockout victory in the first round.
11:12 – I’m guessing this fight lasts 48 seconds.
11:17 – Hey, where’d that tomato can come from?
11:19 – James Thomspon is looking to lose his third fight in a row, folks! That’s a good olde fashioned British hat trick, eh Gov’nah!
11:22 – Kimbo’s entrance music – Drunk Ryders Featuring Trick Daddy. I have a new ring tone.
11:24 – Is it over yet? I blinked.
11:26 – From Katie: “He looks like Big Foot.” Seriously, he isn’t of this world.
11:27 – That beard is beautiful. Hopefully, Kimbo isn’t transfixed by the ear.
11:30 – If Kimbo were to lose this Elite XC would be belly up by the time I finish this live-blog.
11:39 – Look at that ear.

Columbus Ohio folks are going to be fuming… it’s local telethon night on the CBS affiliate (WBNS).
May 31st, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Since when is Newark a great Metro area?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:02 pm
People in Columbus deserve to suffer – that is the price you pay for rooting for the “University of Ohio State.”

I’m surprised that they are pimpimping PHil Barone – I though that dude was a no talent 3 years ago when he was in UFC.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:02 pm
GUS HAS A GOATEE!!!
May 31st, 2008 at 9:03 pm

NOTE: Mauro Ranallo says that at every event he calls.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
I love Frank Shamrock, but saying he went 10 years w/o losing a fight is like saying Lenny Bias never lost an NBA game!
May 31st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
IMO Ken>Frank.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
+1 cursed.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Wow, Frank Shamrock is _terrible_
May 31st, 2008 at 9:06 pm
I’m drinking Miller Lite right now. I suck
May 31st, 2008 at 9:06 pm
You’re kidding, right?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Disagree Jim, Frank was always the more well-rounded fighter. Too bad his ego got in the way of letting him fight in the UFC in his prime.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I’m drinking water, out of the “water cooler” at my “job”.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I’m taking Ken’s WWF career into account.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Miller Lite? No PBR of Schlitz?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
@Harbaugh
Okay, that’s reasonable

running joke into ground
May 31st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Don’t know why we have Miller – Keystone is in the fridge. Feel free to send donations.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Is Jim Ross’ son fighting tonight? How about Gorilla Monsoon’s grandson? now that would be entertaining.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Nothing wrong with Keystone – back in my college days it was $10.99 for a 30 rack.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
*shudder* Keystone
May 31st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Never thought I’d hear Gus say “New York Badass”
May 31st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Gus is hot tonight…
May 31st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Oh do I hope they explain the “rape choke”
May 31st, 2008 at 9:12 pm
I feel like this is one of those awful Saturday morning baseball magazine shows, accept without the hot kids.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:12 pm
IS the back rack legal – that was deadly back in the days of the old WWF video games?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:12 pm
The Dayton CBS station is showing the telethon, too Cursed. Luckily I live smack dab between Cincy and Dayton, and get both. Cincy is showing MMA.
As a side note, I’ve never watched MMA before. Kimbo draws, brother.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
I’m in Parkersburg, and we get charleston cbs as well.. which is awesome during football season.. more games. People in large markets have no idea that we get like 6 games insteady of the normal 3 on gamedays.
trying to justify living in shitty place
May 31st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
How long is this thing?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
I cant stand frank shamrock and elite xc is going to find a way to fuck this up like don king fucked up boxing.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
WOw this new SF game looks awesome.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
keystone light, always smooth
May 31st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
We never get 6 on sundays cursed, but most weeks we’ll end up with a 4th game. It does pay to in an affiliate crossover, even if it is Dayton.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
This is a huge opportunity for both guys tonight. Rogers needs a win to continue his climb to the top of Elite XC. Murphy has a great opportunity to knock off Rogers. I’m really excited to see how Rogers does after his big win over James Thompson.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:17 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Great, I missed the KO due to Direct TV rain fade. I can’t win.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
By the way guys, I hope you realize that Kimbo’s competition lost to this undercard dude, and Butterbean (not on the same night). So when is the MMA equivalent to “Diggstown” going to be greenlit?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
guys – SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHEN KIMBO IS FIGHTING
do we have a time? 945?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Gary Shaw is the fat guy with gray hair so you guys all know
May 31st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
You have time TBL
May 31st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
when are all the different MMA organizations going to just combine, if tonight is successful will this elite XC thing try and buy out UFC and the other one? it would be much easier that way, wouldn’t it?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
TBL, no sooner than 10:30
May 31st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Can someone tell me what the backward facing B’s stand for?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
@Recc4
Pro Elite can’t afford the UFC. Zuffa has a stronghold over MMA.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:33 pm
It’s the Main Event TBL. should be near the end. Say 10:30
May 31st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
shit. guess i’ll have to postpone going out.
i picked up sidney ponson. he got smoked in his last start against oakland. so i bench him. naturally, he leaves with the lead tonight.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
It’s Big Black Security – from Rob & Big
May 31st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Romo, i don’t know much about this so pardon my novice thinking, but doesn’t it seem like that’s what is holding this thing back (aside from the PPV). to me it seemed like dana white ran this whole thing and now this EXC just pops up? just take all the guys make one league and that’s it, obviously money is a HUGE issue but there’s got to be some sort of situation where the money works out and ALMOST everyone can be happy.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Thanks CORM–
May 31st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
on the plus side, cole hamels got lit up
but back to the negative – ellsbury stole three bases today. that’s what is known as a backbreaker.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Here’s a fun game to play. Let’s play the always popular, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE UNTIL PHIL BARONI GASSES?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Recc4, there’s far too many fighters across the world for one promotion to afford all of them and to find work for them. We’re talking thousands. The UFC has hundreds under contract and some early reports are that they’ve blown their load and might not be economically sustainable (although that’s up for debate).
May 31st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
He’s playing Foreigner with Baroni??
May 31st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
I think it’s 2000 election, TBL.
I’ve got it on my DVR waiting to watch it when I get time. Looks good.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
@Recc
This is a huge test for MMA because it’s live on network television. The UFC has tried numerous times to get on ESPN or HBO, but things have fallen through. The only reason Elite XC is on CBS is because of the Showtime connection. There were rumors flying about the UFC being on CBS, but nothing really amounted.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:42 pm
right, 2000, my bad
May 31st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
The UFC is the standard for all of MMA. Gary Shaw saw an opportunity to get on network television and he took advantage of it.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
anyone else flash back to Full Metal Jacket when Baroni came out to “This is my rifle, this is my gun”?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:45 pm
hey look CRM, the tale of the tape is brought to you by Miller Lite! Good Call.
Anybody catch those girls coming out with Baroni? Can we get a screengrab and make them the AM and PM roundup all next week?
May 31st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
10 wins 9 losses thats okay if your Nolan Ryan, but this boxing.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
That’s the best effort Baroni will have all night
May 31st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
wow
May 31st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Now 10 wins 10 losses. New York badass, my ass.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Baroni has a gas tank of five miles to the gallon
May 31st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Baroni was holding the cage. That was illegal and Murgley didn’t call Baroni on it
May 31st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
God I’m glad I moved out of New Jersey.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
It’s a huge loss for Team Bowflex guys
May 31st, 2008 at 9:54 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Cuddy’s hitting the ball??!! Wonders will never cease.
May 31st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
I don’t like when the female athletes show more skin than the sideline reporter..
May 31st, 2008 at 10:01 pm
@cursedcleveland i was just about to comment on how this would be the perfect opportunity for CBS to unveil some bombshell sideline report, instead we get….
by the way, delmon young looks like a pretty good ballplayer
May 31st, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Wait till you see Young. Fugly
May 31st, 2008 at 10:01 pm
who is fighting after the females? kimbo?
and gina carano is quite good looking
May 31st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
There’s still a title fight and then Kimbo
May 31st, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I think Young can score an upset. I’m not sure how mentally ready Carano is. We’ll see in just a few minutes.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I like her braids…
May 31st, 2008 at 10:03 pm
recc4 i hope you were kidding about delmon
May 31st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
These girls are fucking hot. I just love that raging bulldyke look. It’s so now.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
no way this girl should be fighting
seriously

May 31st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Nick P, emo teen look > raging bulldyke look
May 31st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
@fetch, it seems like he has come along and if he keeps his act together then who knows…
May 31st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
That stuff sure looks like vasoline on carano’s face… but I’m not so sure, Baroni was pretty close to her lockeroom
May 31st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Isn’t it more that Young could be a pretty good ball player. Once he starts listening to his hitting coach.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
@cursed: Good call. I love those cutters.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
I’m praying for a Jiu-Jitsu battle
May 31st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
he definitly needs to be more patient at the plate…swung at the first pitch in 54% of his at bats last season
May 31st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
@Fetch – I take it you were not a fan of that trade??
May 31st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
@Hawk: The Twins the entire organizational philosophy re: hitting is terrible.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Snoop Pearson would kill either of these girls.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:08 pm
cursed is on a roll tonight
hawkeye and recc4: NickP dug up a sweet link that showed basically that Delmon is beating the ball into the ground like a slap hitter. Which, needless to say, needs to stop.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Somehwere Vince McMahon is mortified that there could be a female bout not called a “Bra and Panties” match.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
@cursedcleveland
+1
May 31st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
these chicks are big….
May 31st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
@Hawk: Eventually I think the trade will work out. Bartlett will be a utility guy in 2 years, and apparently Garza has some arm troubles, shoulder I believe, that he never told anyone about.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Royals finally win one. Look out AL Central
Comment of the year, thanks.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Carano is getting the better of the strikes right now
May 31st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Now that the girls are learning the closed guard and other defensive techniques, my Friday Nights are ruined.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Fuckin’ love me some Gus
May 31st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
@Nick – A couple of weeks ago, the Twins beat writer for the Star Tribune said that Delmon’s listens to his dad about hitting more then the Twins hitting coach. Not a good sign.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
everyone in jersey loves gina!! if she wants to gain that 12.5 back she should hit up a few of the newark establishments after the event, saturday is a big night and all
May 31st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
I think someone just had her period
May 31st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Young is changing the pace of this round with the takedown, but she needs to do something, otherwise the ref will stand them
May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
I saw a movie like this once on Skinemax, only there were pony tails instead of braids
May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Why is she so out of shape? And why won’t Gus shut up about it?
Also, fetch: it’s also nice to trade for great position-player talent. I liked the trade. Pitchers are just too volatile.
/As I pour one out for Josh Hamilton.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Any doubt that either of these girls could take the referee?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
good round, best action of the night
May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
monkeymike…come on
May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
@Fetch – I was happy to see Garza go. I was tired of his bitching and complaining and his never actually listening to Rick Anderson. He’s a kid who thinks he alot better than he is.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Gina did an excellent job not letting Young do anything in guard. 10-9 Carano
May 31st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
@Nick and Hawk: both excellent points. Garza was one of my favorite Twins, attitude be damned, so I suppose I am a bit biased there.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
somehow it became 2-1 wings by the way
May 31st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I think someone just had her periodCan guys get periods? Wait a second…These are chicks?!?!?!?!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Dangerous!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Young is having a much more aggressive round now that she knows what Carano is all about
May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
sorry to sully up the MMA thread, but fleury is fucking awful tonight.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Wings up 2-1 now – if anyone cares.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
One positive for both these girls, with all these kicks to the stomach, they both saved money on the morning after pill.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Carano is just picking Young apart now
May 31st, 2008 at 10:16 pm
REAR NAKED CHOKE
May 31st, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Bad move, don’t go for the submission. Pound it out.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Thats one tough bitch.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
and gus johnson is into it
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
her eye is about shut
they need to stop this
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
This is the s*&t!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
That was not a good move by Carano. If Young can recover in the next minute, holy crap will Gina regret it.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
How can Young see out of that eye???
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
they need to stop this fight
its over!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Thats crap – she wanted to fight let her fight.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
OMG
she has a golf ball under her eye
May 31st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
@cursed: Not sure that’s a positive. You get an extra $300 from the stimulus package for each kid you have. Looks like they need all the extra cash they can get, although I’m sure the cost of living in Trailer Parkville, USA isn’t too high.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
shoulda let her go, that was the best action so far
May 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
if anyone is interested in former nfl qb glenn carano: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CaraGl00.htm
May 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
It was a good call to call the fight. Young probably wanted to keep going, but Young’s starting to look like Rocky Dennis.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Fuck, Cursed is on a roll
May 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
that may be one of the five gnarliest things i’ve ever seen on national TV
they will not show it again
no way
May 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
clotheslining, not a penalty if youre a redwing
and therrien making hossa serve a delay of game is why, and rightfully, he wont get an extension
May 31st, 2008 at 10:20 pm
I wonder if the refs get a cut of the Wings playoff share
May 31st, 2008 at 10:20 pm
damnit TBL, you’re worse than Adrian Balboa
May 31st, 2008 at 10:20 pm
im guessing the CBS suits are screaming
‘NO MORE SHOTS OF THAT GIRL’S EYE!’
I can’t imagine seeing her face again tonight. maybe not even replays.
that is just not shit you see in everyday life
May 31st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
@mole – Therrien actually had Hossa serve a bench penalty??!! I can’t even comment on that.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
a Rocky Dennis reference.. awesome!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
bro, these are women
if Kimbo does that to a dude, i could care less
May 31st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
If Kimbo calls her “Mean Gene” I’m sold!!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Kimbo is scary…
May 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Gimme a break – if anything the NHL wants “savior” Crosby to win not the Wings.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Damn…serious gold grill on Kimbo
May 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
I’m sure you can feel it Karen…
May 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
For a black guy, Kimbo seems very well-spoken and cordial.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Why haven’t they showed any of the celebs in the house? David Spade and the dude from Green Mile have to be there somewhere.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Nick P.. I just did a spit take..
May 31st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
pens PP, here we go
May 31st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Not like it was Tawny Kitaen beating up Chuck Finley
May 31st, 2008 at 10:26 pm
i really dont think the refs want detroit to win, i just think they are that bad at their job
May 31st, 2008 at 10:26 pm
wow 2 man advantage now
May 31st, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Are they calling that bout two girls one choke?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:27 pm
90 minutes in and we’ve had about 5 minutes of actual fighting
May 31st, 2008 at 10:28 pm
and the penguins cant get the puck in with a two man advantage. cant really complain about anything but their ineptitude if they lose
May 31st, 2008 at 10:28 pm
zetterberg just saved a goal…i hate therrien
May 31st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
because you’re a frequent poster and funny, i’ll assume that you’re post got cut short or something …
May 31st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Is it sacrilegious in these here parts to say that Klitschko or someone of that ilk would just destroy Kimbo?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Monkeymike, that’s why I’m disappointed with the Pens game tonight
May 31st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Diddy will do anything for $.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
@monkeymike
One thing I should note, Elite XC fights are notoriously short. The last Elite XC event I saw went an hour and a half
May 31st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
if i had a shit list, malkin would be on it.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
pens just blew a GOLDEN opportunity, crosby is a picklesmoocher by the way
May 31st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
malkin has been awful, but to be fair he has played 25 more games this season than last and 50 more than the season before that, his conditioning still isnt perfect.
but hes not the only one. if they lose its obviously over.
and because they gave whitney that dumb contract they cant sign orpik and ruutu
so they lose at least four if not five of their starters in the offseason, fucking great.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
@Fetch – What happened to him this series? He’s completely vanished! MVP my ass
May 31st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
I hope they called Gina on the whole not making weight thing. Since she has Gladiator money, she could afford to blow weight and lose 12.5% of her purse in order. As meltzer said in the Observer this week, she had a habit of not making weight. Just make her fight at the next weight up.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
yeah ovechkin is having a GREAT finals though
May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
This ass clown looks like he brought his frat buddies as his entourage.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
so is this not the kimbo fight?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I wonder how good Lawler will really be, now that he is gone from the Miletich camp
May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
@mole – I don’t track the Pens that close, so who are they going to lose?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:34 pm
orpik, ruutu, laraque, hossa, eaton definitely
maybe malone
if they trade whitney they can keep orpik and ruutu easily
May 31st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Matt Hughes is not at Lawler’s side. He’s probably in England already, preparing for his fight with Thiago Alves.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Kimbo Slice would get pounded by a real fighter. He has no stamina, defense nor hand speed. He got his hype fighting tomato cans.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:36 pm
I’m picking Lawer – anyone else?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:36 pm
violence, blood, golf-balls forming under eyes, people with the word “ass” in their nick-name… none of these are as big a deterrent to MMA becoming a mainstream sport as the ridiculously short fights themselves
May 31st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
farnsworth somehow retires 3 batters in a row, going to extras in the dome
May 31st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
the way i see it, if its on PPV, im not watching it.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Big props to Gus Johnson. He’s done a very good job tonight.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:39 pm
I don’t think anyone’s confusing him with the best ever, or even calling him a great fighter. I’m fairly certain everyone is aware he’s a puncher and not a tactical ground guy
May 31st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Both Lawler and Smith are feeling each other out. Somebody is going to move in soon.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
i think someone told these guys to do some dancing, stretch it out a little
May 31st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
this dude in the blue shorts looks like he’s going to get his ass kicked. he looks timid and his punches and kick attempts are slow
May 31st, 2008 at 10:42 pm
May 31st, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Good charge by Smith
May 31st, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Lawler is done playing around, he’s moving in
May 31st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Anderson Silva would be able to submit each and every one of these fighters tonight in less than 30 secs. Elite XC is gonna have to find some better MIXED martial artists. All any of these guys can do is throw punches.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Lawler is picking Smith apart. Smith needs this round to end.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
I’m a big fan of that flying knee move. That was cool.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
go ahead and call this
the dude in the blue is no match
he’s going to get worked if this goes another round
May 31st, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Smith got saved by the bell. Drago needs to give Smith the old ‘hit him high, hit him low’ talk
May 31st, 2008 at 10:45 pm
That was the definition of “being on Queer Street”
May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Does Andy Kaufman’s son fight MMA?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
thebiglead- you didn’t get the Biden reference by Nick P with the Kimbo thing?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Gus dropped a “Saved by the Bell” line.
How great would an “I’m so excited…I’m so scared” line be for Kimbo?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
wings win
May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
wings win.
up 2-1
May 31st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
make that win 2-1 now up 3-1
May 31st, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Put a fork in the Pens, they’re done. Hopefully they’ll be back next year.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
These guidos in the crowd need to go home and beat their wives already. They’re pissing me off.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Smith is making this a fight. He has his second wind…Lawler’s in trouble
May 31st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
on the bright side the redwings defense is so old if the penguins make it back to the finals in the next five years they wont be as good
May 31st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Lawler survived that. I think we’ll see a round three
May 31st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
yer boy’s lookin scrappy tbl
May 31st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
@mole – Just because Chelios was out picking up chicks with Christ, you’re saying they’re old…
May 31st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
diehard wings fan there, doesnt know the series score
May 31st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Lawler needs to keep this fight in close range. He’s doing more damage in the clinch
May 31st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
“Put a fork in the Pens, they’re done. Hopefully they’ll be back next year.”
Agree to disagree
May 31st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
man, black shorts let this guy off the hook in the first round and blue shorts rallied. i’d say black shorts is definitely the better fight, but he should have been more on the attack mode when he staggered the dude badly with like 40 seconds left in the first round. he could have finished him
i feel like the blue shorts guy has slow kicks and slow punches. he just seems … slow
May 31st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Lawler juices like Rick Flair.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Longliver, as an Italian, i’m deeply appreciative of your comments.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
@TBL
Dude, you need some more MMA lessons.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
@Recc -Disagree about which, the Pens are done, or back next year?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
@moleman
diehard wings fan there, doesnt know the series score
It was a typo.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
blue shorts may seem slow, but when you can ram your kneecap into somebodys face it hurts no matter what.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Lawler juices like Rick Flair.
No “k” its Ric Flair.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Blue Shorts= Scott Smith
Red and Black= Robbie Lawler
May 31st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Haha the Yankees must be retarded. They’re walking Nick Punto to get to Carlos Gomez. Now Gomez is no great shakes but really?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
I’m a MMA newbie, but isn’t it usually less of a boxing match??
May 31st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Blue Shorts= Scott SmithRed and Black= Robbie Lawler
Don’t try to humanize these animals.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
So are they going to go over the alloted time to get the Kimbo fight in?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@hawk, seeing them back next year wouldn’t get me too excited
May 31st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
blue shorts will always be blue shorts to me
May 31st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@HawkEye19
Yeah it is, but these are two guys more noted for their striking than their ground game.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@fetch – just throw Gomez a couple of bad balls, we both know he’ll chase them. He’s still learning plate discipline.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
time out? wtf?!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Yes, These guys kinda suck.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Ouch, accidental finger in the eye. The gloves can cause that to happen
May 31st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
EYEPOKE OF DOOM~!
May 31st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
what is this stoppage about?
oooo, finger in the eye
i had no clue that was a rule … FIVE MINUTES??????????
May 31st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
+1 odessa lol
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
carlos gomez making some nice firewood for himself
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Boo this man.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
A stoppage?!?! Wow
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
scramble, i know, im just bitter
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
they’re stopping this? THat’s lame. oh well, bring on Kimbo
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
such bullshit
May 31st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Love the BS chant from the crowd – right on.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
CBS stopped that fight, can’t have the networks miss that local news.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
I declare shenanigans.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
and the mma experiment on cbs just died… gus johnson is going to have someone’s head for this
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
That’s the breaks guys. Shit happens like that.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Is Bennett Salvatore and his crew responsible for this?
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
ahh yes, “high powered officials”, lots of money, a ring, a mix of WWF and Boxing, this makes sense
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
@Jim: +1
May 31st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
I’m sure a stoppage will allow them to say “see, this isn’t human cockfighting. we care about the fighters.” to the nay sayers.
May 31st, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Oh and Nick P +14
May 31st, 2008 at 11:00 pm
that actually seems incredibly weak as the lead-in to Kimbo.
with all the shit that flies in the ring – elbows, knees, choke holds … a stoppage on account of an accidental eye-gouge is wack
May 31st, 2008 at 11:01 pm
powerful wack
May 31st, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Bud Selig would have stopped the fight.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:02 pm
i’m flipping back and forth between gus johnson and michael kay..talk about the best and worst of the announcing world
May 31st, 2008 at 11:03 pm
IMO Miller Lite would not be in beer heaven.
CBS commercials suck.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:03 pm
swingtown!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:04 pm
What a lame ass call – no contest gimme a friggin break. I’ve seen pro wrestling matches with more realistic finishes.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
That’s very generous Fuckwad
May 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
@jim – But it won 4 World Beer Cups!! Of course it would be in beer heaven. Just ignore beers from New Glarus, Russian River, Stone and a hundred other breweries!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
blue shorts looks legitimately touched that he’s getting his bonus!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
actually not a bad job by the league to have the commish and the prez go right on after the fight
May 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Anybody who DVR’d this to see Kimbo will be PISSED.
That fight was redeeming the whole circus factor of the night. But lets have the circus continue now.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Gordon Gund would still be fighting.. gimme a break!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
MMA—home of the absolute worst nicknames in all of sports.
Gary “The Grim” Rogers, “The New York Bad-Ass”, “Smokin’ Joe” (very original) “Rufus” Robbie Lawler….wtf?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
love gus, but how is this an instant classic? again, im a newbie here, but it didn’t seem classical to me
oh shit, look at that dude’s ear
strange
alien-like
May 31st, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Gordon Gund would still be fighting.. gimme a break!
Bravo.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Ruthless, you jack-fuck.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Ruthless not Rufus
May 31st, 2008 at 11:08 pm
i like rufus better
May 31st, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Corny Nicknames are the an embarrassment.
SportsBoy Tony
May 31st, 2008 at 11:08 pm
@TBL
As someone who is somewhat versed in MMA – that was a pretty damn good match. But for full disclosure I must admit that I flipped to the wings game at times.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Can I get free beer for having to watch that fucking lame ass stopped fight? Fuck there bonuses, give the fans something good. Physician? Please.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Not to be confused with Kickboxing Legend Rick Rufus.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:09 pm
@ TBL, That’s called cauliflower ear. Happens to wrestlers all the time. Real wrestlers, not the WWF kind.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Really, “rufus”? Common sense is not your friend.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
@triston – can’t they drain that shiz before it hardens?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Classy dressing room signs….very professional outfit
May 31st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Kimbo fought Tank Abbot?? I don’t know if I’d announce that.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
@Triston
Actually a lot of old school pro wrestlers have the cauliflower ear.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:11 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:11 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:12 pm
TBL, wrestling not big on the East Coast apparently? Cauliflower ear is as common in the midwest as hoodies and pale girls. Oh and failed blogs (CursedCleveland.com)
May 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
@jim – That’s because lots of old school pro wrestlers were amature wrestlers. See Gagne, Verne.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
blue frames?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
You know, Rufus isn’t any more ridiculous than “The Grim” Rogers….it’s not like his last name is Reeker or Peeper.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Classy dressing room signs....very professional outfitYou can do wonderful things with MS Paint these days.

May 31st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
OK, did they just compare this joke of a fake fighter to De La Hoya and Tiger Woods?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:14 pm
@ kfc, don’t know if you can drain or not. Only option might be Vincent Van Gogh style.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:14 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:17 pm
I hate espn, Griffey hits 599, and Manny hits 500, so they put Manny’s pic up and a story on the front page about Manny. Please. East coast fucking bias.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Tomorrow on ESPN “Who’s more now Tiger Woods or Kimbo Slice?”
May 31st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
whatever that dude just did on the taped clip was lame. i hope he gives Kimbo a fight, but for some reason, i doubt it
May 31st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Can the War Wagon stop Kimbo Slice? Stay tuned!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:19 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:19 pm
nwilson26, what do you expect? Geeze, the 500 is a milestone, 600 is a milestone, 599…. not so much. He’ll get his play and live lookins now that he’s reaching a nice, round number.
Pipe down.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:19 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:20 pm
might want to get that ear looked at, guvna
May 31st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
@nwilson: Manny hit 500, Griffey hit 599. Of course Manny gets the headline. Dont be such a crybaby. Its not east coast bias, its cause its the big round number. There is no such thing as the 599 club. Trust me, if it was 600 Griffey would have the headline. (Also, Manny’s was like 5 hours later, Griffey had the headline earlier).
Some people like to complain about everything like a little bitch.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
his ear looks like Young’s eye
May 31st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
@jsands, except I’m willing to wager about no lookins for Griffey.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:21 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:23 pm
I seriously thought nwilson was being sarcastic with his original Ramirez/Griffey complaint. Guess not.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:23 pm
In his Tale of the Tape pic, Thompson doesn’t have that wicked gross ear. That’s just scary stuff.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:23 pm
what, exactly, is a freestyle brawler? Is there an actual brawling style?
I’m only halfway joking here

May 31st, 2008 at 11:25 pm
I think Thompson’s ear absorbed his twin brother
May 31st, 2008 at 11:25 pm
@kfc: it’s not even on yet in PHX. CBS isn’t playing it live. Tape delay. Also, I’d rather fight my own kids than watch.

May 31st, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Hit him with the ear
May 31st, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Kimbo needs to shave an atomic bomb on his chest, like Hulk Hogan used to do in the 70s when he was a heel.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Smart move by Thompson keeping Kimbo down
May 31st, 2008 at 11:28 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
No way will Elite XC allow Kimbo to lose this fight
May 31st, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Thompson has really stuck with it for quite a while. With the exception of Kimbo’s takedown, Thompson has done well
May 31st, 2008 at 11:30 pm
man, i want to see punches, not this grappling on the ground
May 31st, 2008 at 11:30 pm
So, for the record: we’re all rooting against kimbo right? Fraud? Internet hype, etc.

May 31st, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Kimbo looked tired near the end of that round
May 31st, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Kimbo Slice looks like he smells like cigarettes
May 31st, 2008 at 11:32 pm
i just find this really uninteresting … this rolling around on the ground isn’t very fun
i want to see guys throwing fists and haymakers brawling
that was 5 wholly uninteresting moments
the girl fight was the best
May 31st, 2008 at 11:33 pm
How many were blogging during the XFL debut?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:33 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Good elbows by Thompson. He needs to keep them coming and stay active!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Kimbo was too tired right there to throw an effective punch.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:38 pm
436–is this a record for comments?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Get the fuck up Kimbo!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:38 pm

May 31st, 2008 at 11:38 pm
what happened to no downward elbows when someone is on the ground?
May 31st, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Kimbo can’t do anything. He needs to have the fight stand up or for the round to end
May 31st, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Now comes the Vegas style screwin
May 31st, 2008 at 11:39 pm

I’d love to see Gus and Rogan work together at UFC. They would make a great team.
May 31st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Now that we’ve finally seen him, does anyone think Kimbo has any skill in the octagon? Thompson should have put him away a number of times if he had any ability other than taking a punch. What a shitfest that was!
May 31st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Normally I can watch gross shit but I about puked when I saw that dude’s ear pop.
