And why should he? He’s the Teflon Don of the Coaching World. The man coached the Celtics to a 33-49 record in the 2005-2006 season. Then he followed that up by leading the 2006-2007 squad to a 24-58 record. Meanwhile, two of the last 4 coaches to win the Coach of the Year award were both fired last month.

While Mike D’Antoni and Avery Johnson both had to update their resumes after they made the playoffs, Doc Rivers (mis)guided his team to two consecutive seasons of suckitude and was then handed a team that could have won the East with your mom coaching them. So you’ll understand why Doc feels above the criticism of those who have no experience. He’s looking directly at you “bloggers.”

From the Boston Herald:

“I like what we’ve done,” he said. “I coach the way I coach. I’ve always laughed at some of the criticism. I was joking with someone the other day, and I said, ‘Answer me this. Why would someone listen to a guy that hasn’t played, he hasn’t coached . . . some of the guys have never even been reporters, they’re bloggers, and not listen to a guy and his whole staff who have played and coached? Now who’s the fool? Me, or the people listening to them?’”

I think it’s great that Doc feels comfortable quoting himself so it sounds like he’s not really voicing his own opinion. Who was he talking about? This isn’t the first time Rivers has lashed out at bloggers. Here’s a excerpt from Bill Simmons in November 2006:

Doc lashed out at me on WEEI, calling me “just a blogger,” wondering how I could be qualified to have an opinion about the team when I never go to practice and I live 3,000 miles away, and seeming genuinely dismayed that I would write such a detailed personal attack when I didn’t know him.

Just food for though. The head coach and the biggest fan of the team going back and forth – for multiple years now. Simmons doesn’t write grocery lists that don’t include jokes about Doc Rivers being a terrible coach. I can’t wait to see what these two have to say after the Celtics get swept next week.
