The Belmont Stakes Preview: Can I Get Three?
Gambling, Horse Racing June 6th. 2008, 6:00pm
“Another Belmont preview? Come on, CRM! First Trip McNeely, now you?” Look, things didn’t go as planned today so instead of explaining I wrote this last night I’ll just point you to my stellar betting record this year – 0 correct picks for a 0% success rate – I think it speaks for itself. So without further ado…
If you’re a horse racing fan, this is a race for the ages. Will Big Brown become one of the immortal horses and win the Triple Crown? Or will his cracked hoof cause him to lose and become another footnote (Ha!) in racing history?
I don’t know what the point is of even making picks here because no matter what I say that big oaf of a equine is going to lumber around the track and end up blowing everybody else away. At least that’s how his last two races went.
Right now it looks like its going to be a two horse race between Big Brown and Casino Drive. All the other horses are supposedly competing for third. It should be interesting to see how Big Brown runs tomorrow since his hoof is rumored to be held together by nothing but wire and glue. (Oh, the irony!)
1. Big Brown, 2-5
2. Guadacanal, 50-1
3. Macho Again, 20-1
4. Denis of Cork, 12-1
5. Casino Drive, 7-2
6. Da’ Tara, 30-1
7. Tale of Ekati, 20-1
8. Anak Nakal, 30-1
9. Ready’s Echo, 30-1
10. Icabad Crane, 20-1
The Sure To Be Incorrect Picks:
Win: 1 (Big Brown)
Exacta: 1, 4 (Big Brown, Denis of Cork – DoC is due, right?)
Trifecta: 1, 4, 5 (Big Brown, Denis of Cork, Casino Drive)
Superfecta: 1, 4, 5, 10 (Big Brown, Denis of Cork, Casino Drive, Icabad Crane)
Long-Shot Exacta Box: 3, 8 (Ichabad Crane, Kentucky Bear)
Most Likely To Muck Up My Trifecta: 2 (Guadacanal – I can dream. Seriously though, they might as well spray paint “FAIL” on his side. Horses with 50-1 odds generally lead the first 1/4 causing idiots who bet on them (Me!) to get excited. They then finish sometime after the Grand Stand empties.)
Most Likely To Make Money For People Who Have Never Seen A Race: 4 (Denis of Cork – I have an uncle named Denis!)
Dark Horse Pick (Pun intended / horse not necessarily dark) : 8 (Anak Nakal – It’s a palindrome!*)
*No it isn’t.

Ermmm…CoM? I don’t blame you for using your past preview as a template for this one. I do it all the time.
But you forgot to update that long-shot exacta box. It’s the same one you had for the Preakness. Complete with Kentucky Bear who’s not running in the Belmont.

@Reasonable Doubt – That’s why its such a long shot. If it comes in, it pays a buttload.
