The Roundup: Terrell Owens’ Drug Test Saga

As a reader offered: Kate Beckinsale, who’s not a fan? … brilliant question about Shia LaBeouf … Newsweek is either being overly negative about the economy, or it is on target; we guess the latter … 10 months from now, the housing market’s supposed to take another massive hit … as a Democrat, we’re supposed to vote for Obama, but the guy wants to hand out more rebate checks? What’s next, a money tree? Should we just bailout everyone? Hey, let’s become socialists! … the tattoo on Spitzer’s hooker’s stomach? Loosely translate, it means, “I used protection” … T-Mobile is already suing Starbucks over its “free” wi-fi …
Terrell Owens missed some phone calls, and now they’ll drug test him more frequently. (Mort!)

I voted for the WHITE guy who handed out rebate checks.

Beckinsale, Brilliant!
June 10th, 2008 at 8:36 am
That 1lb Fuddruckers is definately mawney… Should be a standard go-to for anyone with a serious appetite.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:46 am
Newsweek is overly liberal and overly pessimistic. The recession they called for months ago with their cover story isn’t happening. Yes the economy is sluggish and it could be much better, but we are NOT in a recession.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:49 am
i could definitely knock out 2 of those burgers without batting an eye.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:52 am
spencer, 2 pounders? have you done this before?
June 10th, 2008 at 8:53 am
Economists and weekly newsjournals have predicted 15 of the last 5 recessions
June 10th, 2008 at 8:53 am
Even for an epically ugly guy like Spitzer, I can’t fathom a guy spending $4,000 to bang a chick. Especially a trampy one.
I can understand Denny Neagle offering $40 to an undercover cop for a BJ, but $4,000 when you’re the Governor? No way.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:53 am
PurdueMatt, you are correct and technically we may not be in a recessions, but this is very different from 2001. The stock bubble burst lost a lot of paper money, regular people saw almost no change to their daily lives. If you’re losing (or can’t sell) your house and paying $100 to fill up your tank that affects your life directly. Also, in an election year I don’t trust the numbers the government puts out, lets just say some people have a lot riding on making things look as rosy as can be.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:53 am
by the strict definition, right Matt?
What’s your take on Obama’s $50 million
June 10th, 2008 at 8:54 am
spencer you ever hit up the fuddruckers when it used to be @ tower city
June 10th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Hey TBL — I bet you expected more of a flood of “how dare you!” comments after you criticized Obama.
Anyway — here’s my two cents — I don’t think the Dems (or most everyone else) considers the stimulus package a “bailout” — more like a concentrated tax cut.
Now, whether or not this entire idea is a sound one in regards to getting the economy growing is another point altogether (I am skeptical). However, I have a much better feeling about the overall Obama plan (middle-class tax cut, investment in education, etc) for the economy than the McCain one (further corporate tax cuts, making Bush cuts permanent).
June 10th, 2008 at 8:58 am
mmonast…yea, ive been there once, but there was one on the east side in Cleveland Heights at Cedar Center that my dad took me to when he told my mom we were going to church. fudruckers burgers were the shit with that golden toasted bun and their, most of the time, undercooked meat…mmm…undercooked.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:00 am
Magglio – Why the need to bring race into everything? And, why the need to strawman MikeNYC?
June 10th, 2008 at 9:00 am
Fudruckers kicks ass mostly because of the toppings bar where you can just load up your burger with pickles, onions, and hot peppers until it’s hard to pick up.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Didn’t expect anything. Bush’s idiotic ‘bailout’ (our check went right to the house fund) was a stimulus package, and so is Obama’s. These guys think they can get votes/approval ratings by ‘helping’ Americans … problem is, where are they getting this $50 million from? In the end, who ends up paying for it?
June 10th, 2008 at 9:01 am
have you been in tower city lately?? its like a ghost town now…most major stores have abandoned it in the last few yrs
June 10th, 2008 at 9:02 am
The fact that the American economy hasn’t hit the tubes yet in light of record energy prices and historical housing problems tells me that this won’t be nearly as bad as alot of people are going on about. And Coop, on the opposite side, there’s alot of people that have stuff riding on the economy tanking, so 6 of one, half dozen of another.
As for Obama…pandering, pure and simple. Bush’s was pandering, but it has actually turned out pretty well (surprise surprise)…so maybe Obama will get lucky by going back to the well.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:03 am
WTF, Griffey hits 600 and doesn’t even get a mention?
June 10th, 2008 at 9:03 am
I think he has a crush on me, 412.
Plus, someone needs to pay his bills — it may as well be you and me.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Who do you think always ends up paying for things? The next generation. Politicians are always mortgaging the future to satisfy the voters now.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:07 am
The economy is great!!
/guess who
How about instead of pretending everything is honkydory (sp?), why don’t we all pay attention to the fact that the economy is not doing well. The “liberal and overly pessimistic” media can call it a recession if they want. I don’t give a shit what they call it.
I would still consider myself a young’un and don’t even pretend to be an expert economist, but everything costs more than it used to! I have only been working and out of college for two years and my commute and eating habits have not changed. But, I spend approximately 2.5x more driving to and from work and about 1.5x more on food than two years ago. Stop name-calling and realize that gas costs $4.00+/gallon! That doesn’t mean I’m struggling to get by; it means I’m able to save less. The inability to significantly save money makes it harder to get ahead and have a cushion available for harder times. That’s the root of long term problems.
@TBL: Thanks for the occasional economic article links in the Roundup.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Will there also be video of the post-event sausage-eating contest?
/ that guy
June 10th, 2008 at 9:09 am
where are they getting this $50 million from? In the end, who ends up paying for it?
It comes out of the general budget. There wasn’t any extra money in the budget, so they’re going to have to borrow money. They do that by selling Treasury bills, notes, and bonds.
So basically, our children will pay for it 20-30yrs from now.

Has anyone seen the results of the 10-handicap challenge thing with Lauer, Romo & Timberlake at Torrey Pines? I thought they played last Friday?
June 10th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Mizer, exactly, in 2001 people’s 401k lost value, today they can’t pay the rent, I don’t care what the numbers say there is a big difference.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:12 am
@ illformula
I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today…or in this case, a 50″ flat-screen TV.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:16 am
While we may not be in a “recession” by the strict definition, we are certainly in an economic slowdown. I don’t think it is the worst thing in the world given our country’s recent trend of wasteful consumption, so hopefully it can spawn more efficient methods.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:16 am
mmonast…i havent been there in years. went to sbarro last summer or something on my way to the indians game, but that’s about the extent of it.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Thank you, coop. I completely forgot the whole 401k arguement. I started a Roth401k the first day I was elligible with the company I work with right out of college. I have contributed 5% and my company has matched 4% every paycheck since then and my overall earnings are -10.25%. Not exactly what I’d call a great start to building a foundation for my retirement in 40+ years.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:17 am
@mizerle06,
All very true. I would also add that the majority of Americans are stupid with their money as well. Only disciplined people in society save money. The rest (majority) spend money on luxery items. One of the items with the largest increases in sales since the stimulus package went out has been big screen tv’s. Typically, when a person receives a raise or gets a better job they immediately improve their lifestyle (which cost more money) instead of saving and gradually improving.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Tina Fey is sexy, almost in that Rachel-Ray-I’m-Not-Sure-Why way.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Didn’t expect anything. Bush’s idiotic ‘bailout’ (our check went right to the house fund) was a stimulus package, and so is Obama’s. These guys think they can get votes/approval ratings by ‘helping’ Americans … problem is, where are they getting this $50 million from? In the end, who ends up paying for it?
Haven’t received our checks yet (I mail in the long form) — but we’re going to use them to pay Lowe’s what we owe for work on our home. So yeah, we won’t be “stimulating” anything, either.
The budget deficit and overall tax policy is a secondary concern in my eyes to education. This country has a serious problem in that India and China are graduating more and more kids from college every year with Engineering and Medical degrees. Meanwhile, a good college education is becoming more and more expensive and the payoff is decreasing in this country. That’s an ominous sign for the future, and it’s one of the big reasons I’ll be voting Dem this cycle — McCain has no interest (nothing of substance at all) in college funding, while Obama focuses on it.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:18 am
cool, so long as im not paying for it.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:19 am
One more thing about college — the fact that both McCain and Bush are against the new GI Bill (sponsored by Dem Jim Webb and Rep Chuck Hagel) is an embarrassment — they should be ashamed.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:20 am
That would be $50 billion, not million. “Those” guys know that they’ll be out of office when the bill comes due on all of these little gifts.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:21 am
broseph, I’m still waiting for the shipment of flat-screens I borrowed from China to arrive.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Thank you.
Cut out the cable, the cell phone, the flat screen TV, and every other piece of crap you can’t afford that you put on your credit card.
Mizerle, a 401k is for the very long term. It goes in cycles. How long have you been contributing. More than 10 years?
June 10th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Not sure I’d characterize giving me a miniscule portion of my money back as a “gift”.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I think its pretty easy to put the blame on people “wasting money” and there is some of that going on, but I would hardly call it a majority, I would actually say that is the minority. There are a lot of people who work hard, don’t waste money, and still have trouble getting by. Rural areas are getting killed by the gas increase. They generally drive older vehicles (bad efficiency) and travel longer distances to work. They also have very few options to work closer and they can’t just go buy a new car.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:34 am
@Mike: No, I have only been out of school and working (i.e. contributing to the 401k) for two years. I know it’s long-term, but it’s damn depressing that I could have put the same money in a savings account earning 0.5% and come out with significantly more money than my 401k is yielding.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Roeth -
I did see the results last night. Romo shot 84. Timberlake shot 98. Lauer shot 100. Course really didn’t eat them up… I’m thinking that scores will go much lower than other Opens unless they can speed the greens up during the week.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Coop, what percentage of Americans have credit card debt? I bet it’s the majority.
That is the definition of waste. If you can’t afford something, why on earth are you buying it? Live below your means, or do something to increase your means (like Maggs — I just write him a check every month.)
Don’t max out your cards, pay the minimum and carry a balance every month, and then curse BushHitler for your financial woes.
Student loans and mortgages are a different story, of course.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:44 am
@coop,
I agree that certain areas are hit harder than others, but a little research and foresight would help people avoid such an extreme impact from a down economy. When the economy was doing really well was the best time to save money make life changes to safeguard against the inevitable decline of the economy.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:48 am
The 10 handicapper who won the contest shot a 114.
I worked in Cleveland last year and my office building was connected to Tower City. That place is a joke, there are 2-3 airbrush stores.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Gift was a sarcastic term, and you’re right that these payouts are pretty much a pittance. So why have them? $50 billion goes a long way when you’re talking about infrastructure projects and repairs or funding public transit in major metropolitan areas (since we’re reminded all the time how we should use public transit), but it’s jack shit when doled out on an individual level.
Politicians are smart. They know that if you offer Joe Six Pack a $300 check now or tell him that you’re going to repair bridges and roads or expand the Metro system, he’ll take the $300 check.
June 10th, 2008 at 9:57 am
$720 million a day for the war.
and the gas graph by the ny times is def inaccurate.
i spend 20% of my income on gas.
Signed,
a poor student in Rochester, NY
June 10th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Yeah, I don’t even have cable or a cell phone! Be smart about this economy and it’s slowdown. Think positive, houses are on sale! So are stocks! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Buy now and sell later.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:05 am
tbl…you are still saving for a house? I would jump on this market now when you have a chance. Lot’s of good property out there for decent prices. As long as you are not saddled with a house to unload, you as a first time buyer should capitalize on this. I would even steer away from a co-op and look straight into a starter home or mid size house of you can afford it. It will pinch a little in the beginning but a guy like me brought at the top of that market and see no value coming back.. You could make some money on your investment now in 5 years.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:09 am
I take your point but, believe me, infrastructure projects aren’t suffering simply because of any rebate or tax cut. Considering the absurd amount of $ that comes out of our checks (Americans really need to realize that this is their money) there is no good reason why such projects can’t be accomplished. But, you and I both know that it is not in the best interest of the people doling out the money to be efficient.
It might not mean a lot to you or I, but I’d just as soon have the $ go to Joe Six Pack.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:11 am
What I wonder about these people caught in these shitty ARM’s is when did they buy their house, and how could they not see this coming. I bought my house with an ARM almost 4 years ago which allowed me to refinance 2 years ago when the market was at about the lowest rate it was going to hit. Why take an ARM then, do you really think it was going to keep getting lower? Hell, the market was already getting flooded then (at least around here) why not take that low rate while you can get it. I’m by no means an economist, but shit, I like to think I know a decent interest rate when it is slapping me in the face.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:12 am
I think the biggest news in all of this is that Obama actually has an idea for once.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:15 am
cbh49er – You dare criticize B. Hussein Obama! Clearly you must be a racist.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Hey chedabob –
RIT, UR, Fisher, Naz, or MCC? Or do you have a serious commute to Brockport or Geneseo?
June 10th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Get me drunk and I could easily eat a pound burger in about 20 seconds. The real problem is having to eat all the toppings along with the burger. Throw in a giant tomato, onion, lettuce, etc. and the burger gets a little more difficult task.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:17 am
@sportsdork- ever had a garbage plate from downtown Rottenchester? my brother went to Fisher
June 10th, 2008 at 10:19 am
cbh49er — First of all, +1. Dynamite drop-in.
Second of all — http://www.barackobama.com/issues/
June 10th, 2008 at 10:23 am
irish — I live in Rochester now, actually. I’m an RIT grad. My brother just graduated from Fisher.
The better question is… what garbage plate joint HAVEN’T I eaten at?
My personal favorite is Mark’s on Monroe. Sort of crazy atmosphere on the weekend’s with all the drunks, but the food is fantastic.
As a side note, two weekends ago I was there with buddies eating and Tim Legler rolled in with his former Eagles cheerleader hottie. He was drunk and signaling for 20 second timeouts during his meal.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:24 am
irish…at thanksgiving a bunch of my family went and got the Garbage Plate. it was delicious, tho i felt like a tranquilized Hippo when i was done.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:25 am
probably wouldve been pertinent to mention my dad’s family is all from Rochester.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:25 am
The Federal Budget has grown by 55% in the past 7 years (and people call Bush a conservative), so where is all of this money going? It’s like gas prices, after a while people become numbed to the increased cost and just accept it. Since a majority of Bush’s folly in Iraq is funded through emergency supplemental appropriations, where is the $1.1 TRILLION dollar increase in Federal expenditures going?
June 10th, 2008 at 10:27 am
@sportsdork- not bad, RIT is a great school. My aunt went to U of R as well.
Nick Taho’s baby. cheeseburger with home fries and baked beans. Franks Red hot sauce all over that
June 10th, 2008 at 10:28 am
@spencer096- small world. My fathers side is from Fairport
June 10th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Irish..you beat me to it…Tahoe’s is the shit..I had a buddy who went to RIT and we would hit that up all the time…it was even better the next day cold and congealed…nice hangover breakfast…I am a fat ass
June 10th, 2008 at 10:34 am
irish…i think my dad’s side is from Pittsford, i think? does that sound right?
June 10th, 2008 at 10:36 am
@spencer- im surpised you never went to Oak Hill to golf. Beautiful course. Pittsford, Henrietta and Fairport are all real close
June 10th, 2008 at 10:48 am
irish…yea, we passed Oak Hill on the way to my grandmother’s. the only thing is, we’re there maybe once per year, and it’s always in thanksgiving. dad’s side is spread all around the country.
June 10th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
please decide whether we are writing or i am writing! i recognize the whole blog/we thing but it’s wacky in sentences like this.
June 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
TBL, I stopped coming to your site because the lack of love you gave to bloggers anymore. So today I check to see what you had in your morning post.
Out of 19 links, I count one, maybe 2 real blogs not related to a mainstream media site.I hope those mainstream media PR types are greasing your palms well. Seriously, I do not mind people that sell out, just those who pretend not to do it.
