Media News & Notes
Media Gossip/Musings June 12th. 2008, 12:45pm
Bill Conlin, whom we enjoyed years ago on the Sports Reporters, has been suspended from his local Comcast gig in Philly, although the reason for his suspension is incredibly weak (with video). (The Fightins‘)
Get ready for that ESPN.com overhaul! Supposedly, the website will be much easier to use. The masses have been calling for this for at least two years, so it’s good to know that ESPN’s actually listening. (Broadcasting and Cable)
Shocking revelation: Journalist admits he got too close to his sources and lost his objectivity!! This starts slow, but gets good. (Portland Tribune)
Reilly on Simmons: “I’m not doing more than 800 words, I’m not from Boston, I don’t write a lot about the NBA. I’m more likely to tell a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end. He’s a blogger.” We promised no more posts on these guys for a minute, so they’ll be relegated to this space (Marketwatch)
And Reilly’s 2nd effort is about golf, but many readers wanted us to note that he got frontpage love from ESPN for this … but it was quickly bumped for Bill Simmons. It’s sad that we missed all of this, but we set a record: We didn’t visit ESPN’s website until after 4 pm yesterday. (ESPN the Mag)

rick reilly is a douche
June 12th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
What was Roman talking about the other day re: the “pussification” of America?
June 12th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
ESPN’s site is fairly easy to navigate the only problem with it is the video that plays automatically.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
How is ESPN.com hard to navigate?
June 12th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
i’m glad others are finally pointing out that simmons is just a blogger. not that there’s anything wrong with that. not at all. i’m just saying. that’s what he is. still, he’s better (yep, I’m saying this) than rick freaking reilly.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Hard to navigate is a bit of an overstatement. I’d like to see it streamlined a bit, because it can get unwieldy at times.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Blogger, columnist — is there a difference? He’s offering his opinion on sports, right.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
where did the crucial “Recent Comments” box go?
how did Reilly get bumped from Front Page? he’s still in that box with Wojo and Pat Forde.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
what a horrible job by comcast? you’d think that lupica was running the network
June 12th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Did Reilly take that guy from CBS marketwatch to dinner after he blew him?
June 12th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
i dont see all the hate for Reilly. I truly enjoyed the work he did for SI.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Why did you leave out the first and last last line of the quote? “Old school-new school” and “I still love reading him” change the tenor of the quote a little.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
I actually did like Reilly’s column last week about his boozehound dad.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Bill Conlin has a great fat guy voice.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I don’t hate Reilly, but I feel like his columns are either really awful or very good. I’m not going to be able to give an opinion on his newest column because I won’t be reading it. Golf bores me.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Sportsgal your new avatar is gay.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
No it’s not, it’s super hot and awesome.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I am seeing the same avatar for you, SG.
Man, that site sucks.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
sportsgal - what the hell is it…so small i can’t tell
/may be old enough to need glasses
June 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Mike, I’m sure you’ll prefer my old avatar to my new one. Unless, of course, you like pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo showing off his amazing abs. When did you make the change to the Lost avatar?
June 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I find Reilly to be a bit of gasbag. This is partly a generational fault as I think alot of the baby boomer generation writers suffer from that same fault. I also find he can be a bit formulaic. I can tell pretty quickly after starting one of his columns if I plan on finishing it.
And yes, I don’t really care about golf all that much. Especially reading about it.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I see now. Just needed to squint…mike piazza would totally agree with you sportsgal
June 12th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
It’s working? I tried changing it yesterday. I don’t see it, though.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Mike are you on IE?
June 12th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
part of the reason i don’t like reilly is because i just object to the way he writes.. 90% of what he writes is some form of sob story/ golf story. it never changes and i guess you could say the same about simmons (nba/pop culture) but simmons is the one with the bigger audience and its not particularly close
June 12th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Firefox. I guess that’s why. Will never go back to IE though.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I can see both you and Sportsgals new avatars on Firefox.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I use to read Reilly a lot when I actually received SI. Him coming over to ESPN means I will probably read him now, because I get the mag. His first article was excellent. Good way to introduce himself to people who had not heard of him, and for us that did, a nice way to see a more humanistic side of a writer.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I’m still seeing the damned Red Wings logo.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
sports gal, i hate your avatar.. thanks
June 12th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
the tagline for reilly’s latest column begins “It takes courage to root for the salmon to eat the bear.” i can’t wait to read it!
June 12th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
sportsgal…what’;s the new avatar?
June 12th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
i mean, really. why does one root for the salmon to eat the bear? moreover, why does that make one courageous? finally, why does he use the definite article?
June 12th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Spence, my avatar is the lovely, beautiful, hot-as-hell C. Ronaldo.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I thought Riley’s first ESPN contribution was very well done. I also used to enjoy his stuff in SI the magazine.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Salmon is the opposite of tuna. Salmon swim against the current–the tuna swim with it
June 12th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Good for the tuna.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
i see Cortes’ new avatar, but SG and Mike’s old one. I confused.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I agree with cortes on this one. Reilly is over sentimentalized crap. Boohoo, my dad’s a drunk. Here’s a heartwarming golf story. Cheerleaders aren’t good at writing hate mail. Fucking hilarious. hahahahahahahahaha.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
cortes, you shoulda stuck with the U.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
i just changed it for baseball season.. when the canes start playing football ill go back
June 12th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
speaking of avatars, mikenyc, until clown made the providence joke the other day, i thought it was this penn state logo.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
cortes, you should make Niner your avatar.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
spence, this is sportsgal’s new gravatar
June 12th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Has clown taken on Nomo’s Photoshopping skills? He could be unstoppable.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
+1 clown
June 12th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Fuckin’ hack… If you and Roman keep stealing all my shit, I’ll be left with nothing but bowstaff skillz, computer hacking skillz, cougaring skillz…
June 12th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Keep your cougars, RexKramerDependsWearer. That’s all you.
June 12th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Oh, and I’ve seen Clown. Those. aren’t. his. ab(s).
June 12th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Rex..its not stealing..its an omage…
June 12th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
omage??? Really? You’re not retarded, right Roman? Right?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Just watched the Conlin..thing…are they fucking serious? That is worthy of suspension..every cocksucker who listened to the complaints of people who harvest fucking blueberries should fucking suck the gasspipe…I don’t even like this fat fuck and that is just utterly ridiculous…the Pussification of America personified right there
June 12th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Hef that was his FUPA talking.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
hef…I just need to make him happy so I can use his boat…2-0 Mets..
June 12th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Hef, Roman actually meant to put “omajj”
June 12th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Fo shizzle, Roman. Fo shizzle.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Lucky for you Roman, the Dbacks suck on the road more than the Mets suck at home.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
hef..maybe they will play 26 innings today in a test of futility
June 12th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I’d rather just say fo shizzle all day than watch that abortion.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Re the Colin suspension: If it’s a paid leave then I understand saving face and a free vacation, but he shouldn’t be punished at all. It’s just stupid that people would complain and that they would buckle like sissies.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
is anyone else watching the cubs on WGN? why is it in black&white?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Turn Back the clock day
