USA Soccer Hangs a Snowman on Barbados
Soccer June 16th. 2008, 1:00pm
Amid the rare cornucopia of must-watch Father’s Day sports action was the first World Cup qualifying match for the USA. Michael Bradley and Tobey Maguire Clint Dempsey were most instrumental in the 8-0 victory. The tireless Tyler Duffy recaps the match after the jump.
After the sweet potpourri of Turkey-Czech Republic, ESPN 2 brought us the stale, languishing fart that was U.S.A. – Barbados. Bradley’s boys displayed the appropriate amount of deference for an outmatched opponent, fielding a full strength squad and bombing forward with the glee of small children well past the 80th minute. Particularly classy was Big Game Lando’s gamesmanship, scoring on a quickly-taken free kick with a 3-0 lead in the second half. USA! USA!
There were two interesting facets to this match. One was Barbados’ uniforms, which looked like one-size-fits-all, neon gym clothes. Could Nike hook them up as some sort of charity write-off? The other tidbit was Lando’s farmers tan. You would think someone who passes on top-level soccer to live the sweet life at his California beach house could at least muster a decent tan.
Looking long-term, this match answered few pressing questions for the U.S. The backup goalkeeping is still fine. The defending remains quite competent. The forwards still display little of the flash that their shoes would suggest. Michael Bradley looked better, but it would be hard not to against this opposition. His midfield partnership with U-20 battery mate Freddy Adu will be crucial to U.S. chances in 2010.

I wish Bradley would cut Beasley. He is a lazy, unmotivated piece of crap. He spent most of the game just standing around… granted, this was against Barbados, but he displayed the same enthusiasm against Argentina.

More soccer, huh?
So, anybody else ever accidentally end up on thebiglad.com? I bet 277,000 of you have, and maybe not always so accidentally …

I sure hope TBL gives the Olympics their due.

Isn’t this kind of like a pro boxer ranked 280th in the world setting up a fight on ESPN in which he knocks out my grandpa? Barbados? Really? On a nationally televised game we beat up on Barbados? Fantastic.

I am with you on Lando’s goal, that was just shady. I believe both him and Beasley should begin to be phased out of MNT play. I think/hope that neither will be a significant part of any run in 2010 and have served their purpose as far as the national team is concerned and room should be made for those who will serve a part in 2010 (adu, edu, altidore)

@TBL
Dude, water polo, please God just update water polo. The networks only show a quarter at like 3AM. Oh but they think we love the gymnasts and their rings? I hate that shit.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
So wait we weren’t supposed to try to score against Barbados because we felt sorry for them?
This is sports, not 1st grade.

Maggs- The US beat the #1 ranked team in the world yesterday.
TBL- Well for starters, 2008 is the last Olympics where there will be baseball, at least for awhile.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
@thedude, thanks for directing some of us over to the otheer TBL

Water Polo is freakin retarded hard. They are conditioning machines. not to mention the beating they take under water from being kicked and shit.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
ok, 69th minute on ESPN2 – Turkey vs. Czech. This is where it gets good.
Guy about to hit a post …

Barbados is the #1 team in the world? I don’t believe that for a second. Maybe that was their B team then. Isn’t Brazil ranked #1? Maybe Germany or France, but surely not Barbados.

@sparty
It’s all about the egg beater, son. Oh, and brick sets.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Argentina is ranked #1 in the world and we tied them last week, Barbados is way down the list and the US is in the 20s
June 16th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Maggs- I was talking water polo, since you mentioned it.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
@fetch
Oh? No shit? I have no idea about international polo anymore. Like I mentioned, it is never on. Good looking out. Who did we beat? Score?
June 16th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Don’t be silly, CBH. This is just another example why the world hates us!

We were supposed to feel sorry for them because they had to wear Mia Hamm’s old UNC Uniforms, just colored differently.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Maggs- Beat Croatia, 8-5 I think.
June 16th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I hope TBL gives the Olympics their due, too – by completely ignoring them. That’s pretty much what they’re worth.
The problem with leaving Beasley off the squad is that he can really play when he wants to. It might help his motivation to drop him for a while, though… he’s been part of the national squad for a while now, and might be assuming its his right to be there.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
World Cup qualifying is based on aggregate goals and wins, so the more goals scored, the better.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
TBL- can I squeeze one post out of you about distance running at the olympics, like maybe the 1500?
June 16th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Beasley has played in 6 games since coming back from a 6 month layoff from a torn PCL, which was supposed to keep him out for closer to 9. I didn’t see him look lazy until the 2nd half, after we were up by more than 4, and the whole US team relaxed. Give him a break, he’s not in game shape yet. He’s maybe played 5 games of competitive soccer since last December. As far as benching him and Lando, who else would you replace them with? You think Robbie Rogers or Alvarez are international quality wingers? Maybe in a few years, but until then (or Altidore, Adu, Dempsey or EJ step up), Lando and RunDMC are our most dangerous attackers, and probably will be past 2010. And that free kick goal is totally at the discretion of the ref. He allowed us to take it fast, and like sportsgal said, this is to get to the world cup. Run it up.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
They didn’t need to stop scoring, but they can call off the dogs when they are up 6-0 with less than ten minutes remaining rather than pouring on the pain and patting each other on the back.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Um, what?
June 16th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Also, I can’t find anything that says that a potential tie-breaker would be goals scored over the entire qualifying period (that would disadvantage countries with byes who player fewer matches) rather than in the individual group stages. So there would be no reason to pour it on, unless you are concerned that Barbados are going to storm back at home and beat the U.S., which is not going to happen.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
And the “the ref allowed it defense” is no excuse for Donovan. It’s incredibly unsportsmanlike to even attempt that. It is like an onside kick when you are up by five touchdowns.
June 16th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Ty, in each round of World Cup qualifying, you play a team home and away from your group. If you were to win the first game and then lose the second, you advance to the next round based on your aggregate score. So if Barbados somehow managed to beat the U.S in the next game, they would have to beat us by 9 goals to advance.
June 16th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Sportsgal, I am aware of that. What I was saying was that there is no chance that Barbados is going to win, let alone win big, next weekend. So, the idea that the U.S. needed to pile on at the end to give themselves an 8-0 rather than a 5-0 or 6-0 advantage is ridiculous.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Typical Clint Dempsey. Good against inferior competition, and then disappears against legit teams. Seriously, think about this – is there any forward on the USMNT that is better than Brian McBride? I know he’s retired from the team, but couldn’t they lure him back? The US forwards are a joke. Brian Ching? Riiiight.
