Yardwork: George Sherrill Will Save You
Baseball June 18th. 2008, 11:00am
Orioles 6, Astros 5: Thanks to a two-run double from Melvin Mora in the 8th inning, Tuesday night marked the 16th time this season that Baltimore rallied from a two-run deficit to win a game, tops in the Majors. The Astros have now dropped six straight. George Sherrill picked up his 23rd save (even with a moderate 3.38 ERA).
Rays 3, Cubs 2: In a game that included just five runs, starters Ryan Dempster and Scott Kazmir didn’t pitch past the 5th inning, but it was Kazmir who was a bit more effective, yielding three hits and striking out seven. Cliff Floyd homered against his former team – and used a Rascal to round the bases (I WANNA TELL YOU ABOUT DIABETUS!)
White Sox 16, Pirates 5: There’s something about the White Sox winning games where you think they’re a really good team, but then they lose three straight to a team like the Pirates. Okay, bad example, but you get the idea. Orlando Cabrera had a homer and three RBI and has raised his average from .241 to .269 in the month of June.
A’s 15, Diamondbacks 1: Mark Ellis had two homers and four RBI and the A’s got four more home runs to embarrass the D-Backs at home. Brandon Webb got shelled for seven runs, nine hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Rangers 7, Braves 5: Milton Bradley tweaked his hammy, which is too bad for the Rangers because he’s been pleasantly productive this year when he’s suppressed the urge to murder. V. Padilla moved to 9-3 on the year, while Tim Hudson fell to 7-5.

I hate the dbacks.

Teams fading during the season:
D-Backs vs. REOSpeeddealer
Discuss.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:03 am
@Hef – When did the NL West get so bad?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:04 am
glad to see Livan’s trade value go back up last night.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:05 am
St. Bear: reo speeddealer was making a comeback. They were only five points back until yesterday.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I don’t think Paul Byrd is taking these trade rumors to well.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:06 am
@jim: no idea. A ton of “analysts” picked that to be the best division in baseball this year. Stupid steroids.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Why is there a picture of Bedard in an O’s uniform? At least get a picture of Mora or Sherill.
Also, August or any of the O’s fans on here, did any of you catch the game last night? Did Tejada get booed?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Jose; Jose, Jose, Jose, Jo-se….
June 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am
The Astros have now dropped all hope of even sustaining mediocrity this season.
/fail.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am
The O’s have no quit, quite the opposite of those whiners on the Mets.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am
What a strange game. I saw Kazmir went out in the 4th I figured he had to have been hurt, then I saw that he threw 114 pitches. FTW? With only 3 hits allowed? Did he full count every single batter? Did one guy foul off like 30 pitches?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am
@Hef: Just getting my shots in now before the Braves, I mean my team, goes in the tank. What the hell was I thinking drafting so many guys from the same team? Oh that’s right, I was drinking during the draft.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:10 am
@ cbh49er: I didn’t get a chance to see it… nothing worse than being an out of market fan of a crappy team.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Shyster:
June 18th, 2008 at 11:13 am
They pulled him with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth. Four walks, seven Ks. He kept missing up and away to righties with his FB, but they weren’t touching it when he was locating it.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Yankees pitchers have not allowed a run for two games in a row? can this be true?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Damn straight. It helps when you’re playing the ‘AAA’ Padres.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Nice quote from Bavasi on his way out the door about Bedard…
I asked Bavasi on Monday about Bedard’s pitch-count threshold. After bouncing between defending and explaining Bedard, the axed GM — clearly exasperated — said I needed to ask the pitcher.
“You gotta ask him,” Bavasi said. “You gotta ask him. Good luck. And he’s gonna have some stupid answer, some dumbass answer.”
June 18th, 2008 at 11:18 am
sparty, aren’t they playing the Padres?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Yep, these are my Pirates.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:20 am
and 2 more home runs for Giambi. I might start growing a mustache too.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am
they also just played the Asstros, they won that 13-0
June 18th, 2008 at 11:24 am
My Dad and I are debating getting digital cable or DirecTV just so we can watch the O’s. I actually love watching the Phils, but this O’s team is just too fun to watch.
And according to Baseball Tonight last night, Tejada’s ass did get booed. That assclown.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:24 am
BREAKING….Tiger Woods Out for the year
June 18th, 2008 at 11:25 am
I am glad the team got a spark out of the Willie Randolph firing…oh wait…they played the same way..carry on
June 18th, 2008 at 11:26 am
I heard last night Hank Steinbrenner was blaming NL’s no-DH rule for Wang getting hurt while he was running the bases. Apparently pitcher’s in the AL are exempt from conditioning exercises since they’re never expected to run. Yet another reason why I hate the Yankees.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am
And good catch cbh, that is Bedard, Sherrill’s brim is flat as a board. Thank God for McPhail pulling the trigger on those two trades.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:27 am
where do you see that mikey?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Mikey, link?
Glad to hear that Billy, can’t wait to boo his ass every time he comes up tomorrow.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:28 am
I’m still in shock that they maintained the shutout after Wang left. Who hurts themselves like that? He’s soft.

absolutely no torque on the knew either when you swing.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:32 am
@sportsgal: I saw that as well… he seemed very offended by the idea that pitchers should actually play the game of baseball.
/still waiting for a constitutional amendment against the DH
June 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
i must have posted a comment about steinbrenner for two days. where the hell were ya sportsgal?
June 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
sorry ill get off the baseball board with this…I also wont jinx the cubs by talking about their season…i learned to not be an obnoxious cub fan

DH baseball > no DH baseball.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am
haha…tiger story breaks on the big lead eight minutes before espn.com….lol
June 18th, 2008 at 11:35 am
I’m amazed that the players union doesn’t fight for the DH to be implemented in the NL. They should be all about more jobs for old guys that can’t run or play the field.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:36 am
remember when everyone said Minaya was one of the best GMs, just wait and see what he does with a payroll…
June 18th, 2008 at 11:40 am
They should be all about more jobs for old guys that can’t really play baseball anymore, but excel in batting practice.
/edited for thuthiness
June 18th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Am I the only person who likes having the two leagues be different? I hear so many arguments one way or the other, but I like having it both ways. I like having some pitchers in the NL who can hit, and I like having the AL pitchers look like retards trying to bat (even when it hurts my team, Colon).
June 18th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Sorry sparty, guess I’m behind the times. I’ve been focused in on Euro Cup for the past few days.
That Steinbrenner quote really pisses me off. If your piece of shit pitcher is too out of shape to run the bases, then maybe you should look into firing your strength and conditioning coach. Asshole.
No DH = real baseball
DH = baseball for pussies
June 18th, 2008 at 11:43 am
That’s what she said.
June 18th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Jay Bruce hitless in 15 at bats. What the fuck!?!?!?!
June 18th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Didn’t we just have a NL vs. AL, no DH vs. DH discussion a couple of months ago? Maybe we need to have a roll call again.
43 m DH
June 18th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Bruce Legacy > Kobe Legacy
June 18th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Whoa. I think I need to step up and defend Wang here. He does lead the majors in wins over the last couple years. He’s just a bit of a wuss and can’t run. But he is a good pitcher.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
The “piece of shit” wasn’t in reference to his pitching ability. He’s just a piece of shit in general.
Also, I think leading the league in wins isn’t an impressive pitching stat. Winning relies almost entirely on how your teammates hit the ball, not really on how well you pitch.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
I didn’t actually read this thread, but in regards to the White Sox comment.. when they win, they own, when they lose, they are awful.. it doesn’t make watching them lose very entertaining, and I’m not usually one of those guys that can’t stand a good game if his team loses, but they’re hard to watch when they lose.
as for the AL vs NL, DH vs. no DH.. isn’t that what makes the difference in leagues fun, and gets power hitters who are useless in the field out of the league a little faster because their options are cut in half? Hank can shut it, maybe he should make sure his pitchers are conditioned as athletes as well as pitchers.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
But if you give up more runs than your team scores, you don’t win.. therefore as a pitcher, you are the primary cause of a win, unless your team scores, oh, say.. 16 runs or so, in which case, you’d have to really suck to no get a win.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I knew Imig would never include his cards getting worked by my lowly Royals. Mike Aviles should get a temporary C on his jersey.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Even mediocre pitchers can get wins as long as their team provides enough runs (see: Marquis, Jason). Think about how many relievers have wins right now. For pitchers, it’s all about EARNED RUNS, not overall number of games won.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
nwilson – Imig rarely if ever puts a Cards loss in Yardwork, but he loves to mention the Cubs losing.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
And Wang’s ERA has been lower than the league average since he started in the majors. So, going back to Wang being a good pitcher, maybe I just used the wrong stat for you.
Either way, I can’t believe I’m defending Wang. Nobody on the Yankees really likes the guy. God, this baseball season is going to suck the life out of me.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Billy, I know nothing about Wang’s pitching stats. Like I said, I was referring to him as a piece of shit because he got hurt running on the bases. And he plays for the Yankees.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
No doubt, but I feel like somebody around here has to defend him and not just because he’s a Yankee. I kinda fucked up my ankle running the bases last week, so I feel his pain.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
i fucked up my ankle carrying groceries up the stairs..
