Croatia vs. Turkey, Winner Loses to Germany
Soccer June 20th. 2008, 2:50pm
We cannot possibly express our disappointment in Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo after Thursday’s shameful 3-2 loss to Germany. What a letdown. Ronaldo is our favorite European player, and now we’re resigned to rooting for a semifinal between Ruud van Nistelrooy and the Netherlands (we maintain his deft footwork on the sideline against France is the single most breathtaking play of Euro 2008) vs. David Villa and Spain. Today: Tournament darlings Turkey tussle with crafty Croatia, which has already defeated Germany. The winner has a date with those tall Germans.

suppose im pulling a bit for Turkey here. Of note: I’m finally home. Spent many hours today at the hospital (not me, a relative), and thus haven’t answered any emails. I’ll spend the afternoon and weekend getting back to everyone.

That video is so wrong, being set to the Pat Boone version of “Tutti Frutti.” Blech.
June 20th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Since you mention him, this is my favorite Van Nistelrooy video:
Celebration
June 20th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Don’t worry TBL, except for the obvious drop off in quality no one noticed a difference.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Free kick just outside the box for Turkey … a Croatian takes it off the face.
in other news, people hate me! Sucks.
In the immortal words of this guy, “When you shine, all these haters want to talk down … let ‘em talk dog, it don’t faze me, it might not be right if they don’t hate me.”
Although it’s whether we’re ’shining’ is up for debate.

We Get Wood - Video of the week. I might have to play that next week as a full post if Netherlands wins this weekend.
And yes, the Tutti Fruitti vid is weak … just mute
June 20th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Ha Ha Ha suck it Ronaldo!

June 20th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
wow, Croatia hits the crossbar and misses and heads one over an open net
June 20th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
TBL, so 16 people hate you. shake em off man.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
yeah, im a big boy. i can take it.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I hit “disapprove” because I thought we were voting on your outfit.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Ouch. Cleat to the mouth!
June 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Even money that The Maj and Ufford accounted for half those votes.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
The dry humor of the announcers is a nice touch. “…he’s checking his incisors and molars, making sure they are all still there…”
June 20th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
TBL: Always remember the wise words of Fat Joe: “I’ll rather be feared than loved. The fear last longer.”
June 20th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
croatia absolutely dominating possession
June 20th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Why is this game even being played? Turkey isn’t in Europe. Geez!
June 20th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I voted “approve” for ya TBL
Mo Money, Mo Problems
June 20th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I’m surprised CRM voted “disapprove”. I guess he’d rather write the morning round up.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
The Croats can beat Germany, thus I want the Checkerboards to win. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Turks won today. This is really an entertaining game. A good bit of attacking with good defense in the box (and one very unlucky crossbar).
I can’t believe Germany is likely going to walk to the finals. Utterly ridiculous. No team in history has gotten more walks to finales in futbol than the Krauts. Portugal sucks. So much talent and so little heart. Their defense and GK is like a sieve.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Did you not see that shirt?
June 20th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
irish, how much golf do you play in that warm ass weather? a round a week?
June 20th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
those crafty Turks
what a strike just wide
June 20th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
irish, how much golf do you play in that warm ass weather? a round a week?
at least one round a month. I try to go in the morning when it is cooler out. Just think, it will be 80 when you come down for the Super Bowl
June 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Shot an 82 this morning. Thanks for asking TBL… Part of the 4 month timeframe per year where golf isn’t in snow or cold.
Ok. So you didn’t ask, but I thought I’d share. Its nice not to be working!
June 20th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
im eager to start playing again. started pricing some sets, and i think im just going to start with one really strong driver. And really, how important is a top dollar putter?
An 82 seems impressive … assuming it wasn’t a par3. Had one of these near my house growing up in VA, and i’ll never forgetting ripping a line drive that drilled a duck in the ass, sending the flock scurrying and feathers everywhere. Was funny
June 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Game updates?
June 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
@wally- how much did you pay for 18? It is almost $30 down here. But when the snowbirds come down, the rates go to $50. you gotta be happy with that score of 82 today
June 20th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
$10 golf at most courses in AZ, but then again, the survival rate during midday is less than 15%. You have to show your will when you get your cart.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Rob Stone is a smarmy bag of douchejuice. Rece Davis should be forced to host all the Euro 2008 coverage.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
are you guys playing shitty muni courses or is it really that cheap? i heard a course in Miami offers all you can play golf for like $25 and they give you lunch. Christ, i pay at least $40 a round in WI.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Wisconsin in the summer actually has decent weather benji. You should visit some time. It’s hell.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
yes because croatia didnt absolutely dominate germany in the group game

have 2 courses within 5 minutes of my house. Its 26 and 28 with cart during the week. Neither of those courses are much to write home about, but they are close and can be played in 3hrs 15min early in the morning.
Even the good ones in Columbus top out at about $60 on the weekend. I can usually find specials during the week for $35-40 at the nicer courses. Columbus is an embarrassment of riches when it comese to golf courses. Too bad the weather doesn’t cooperate.
And yes, the 82 treated me well this morning. My partner lost a little jack to me.
As for clubs, don’t overspend on a putter. A couple of the best putters I ever had were not expensive. They have to feel and look comfortable to you. I won’t lie, a Scotty Cameron putter putts different, but its not worth the jack for a small number of rounds.
If you’re trying to save on the $$, look for deals on previous year models of drivers. You can likely find them in the $150 range. They were the top line model last year, but drop in price due to the NEWEST of the new technology. Nothing wrong with those…
June 20th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
God, the Turks are getting lucky now…
June 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
that was nutty
croatian almost scored against three defenders … goalie fall asleep there?
June 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
And really, how important is a top dollar putter?
i dont think it is that important. I would rather spend money on a nice bag or a good driver.
@benji- i lived in Miami for almost 5 years and i never heard of a course that offers that. I have heard of courses who have strippers at every other hole but that is a different story
June 20th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
@wally- we have a “summer” golf card that you can purchase at a discounted rate. It gives you discounts at all the courses in the neighboring counties and such. Saves a lot of money because you can get 9 holes for free at some courses. Good job on that 82. im jealous
June 20th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
guess: Turkey wins 1-0 on a freak goal
they have done nothing so far … which is why i think it’ll happen
June 20th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
$60 for a round on the weekend? Damn. i have been out of the sport for a minute.
June 20th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
irish, it’s the Miami CC. i hear the commercial listening to the Dan Lebetard show.
hef, summers are really nice here. it can get humid sometimes. but, 75-90 and sunny a lot of the time. i was in AZ in march the last 2 years. it was great. i try to stay away from the south in late june-august.
June 20th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
@benji- yeah, i havent lived in Miami in almost 4 years
June 20th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
TBL -
Those are the REALLY nice places. Average is still likely around $45 on the weekend with cart. However, courses are feeling the econ pinch too. Deals can be had later in the day or at special times…
It is just a matter of time for the Checkerboards. However, if it goes 80 minutes scoreless, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Turks pull one out.
June 20th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Irish -
12 of us found a deal last Friday. $50 got us all the golf we wanted for the day (in our case, 36 holes with GPS on the cart), 6 beers, 3 sandwiches, and 4 snacks (which could be subbed for more beer, and they were…).
June 20th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
@wally- wow, that is not bad at all. im not surprised you went with the liquid lunch. I do like the GPS systems on the carts a lot. Helps a player like me out who has a hard time judging the distance
June 20th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
looks like we’re headed to PK’s …
doesnt it sound like the announcer is saying TUCAN SAM for one of the Croatian playesr?
June 20th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
two croatian defenders just let him take the shot! i can’t believe that!
the croatian coach is irate that there was stoppage time added, apparently for no reason
we’re going to PKs
June 20th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Ho…….ly………shit.
Unbelievable.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT
June 20th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
wow…what a finish to extra time!
That was an absolutely amazing shot by the turkish player. On the replay the space between the two croats must not have been much more than one ball wide.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I’m still sitting here in shock. That was almost as unreal as 3 goals in 13 minutes… The Turkish squad should start buying lottery tickets wherever they can get their hands on them.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
i don’t know the rule…it looked like the ball hit the croat guy on the shoulder when he scored. IS that a hand ball or is it below the shoulder?
June 20th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
I just got home and started watching it the last 20 minutes. Unbelievable.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
the croatians are going to lose in PKs and be pissssssssed
and they might have a case
June 20th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Wow. Dude missed the whole goal.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
and he missed wide. OUCH
poor croats
June 20th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Yep. Not sure that the Turks should have even had a chance…
Wow. 1st PK missed wide…
June 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
TURKEY IS THE NEW DAVIDSON
i dont know who is playing the part of Stephen Curry, tho … maybe this kid No. 14?
1-0 turkey …
June 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
srna - they announcers love this dude
he had a nice game
June 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
That first Croat looked scared shitless. This second dude did it with ease.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Holy shit. Another one wide. Weak.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
ANOTHER MISS?????????
June 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
What a choke. Croats will be rioting in the streets of Vienna tonight… Angrily.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Keep updates coming. thanks
June 20th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
turkey against germany
davidson vs. kansas
maybe it’ll be closer than we think?
(turkey’s got it, folks. …)
June 20th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Turkey is making it look easy.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

June 20th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
DENIED!
BALL GAME!
turkey advances
June 20th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
What a comeback. Literally at the last second.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
how crushing off a loss is this for Croatia? It’s like scoring the game-winning TD with like 10 seconds left … and then letting the opponent run the kick back for the score, and then losing in OT
the only difference here: Your COUNTRY is crushed, not just a city ….
“pulsating, dramatic quarterfinal”
June 20th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
The Turks have about 5 guys injured and 3 more miss due to yellow cards against Germany. Safe to say that the Germans will be heading to the finals. Can’t believe that the friggin Germans are going to the Finals. Ugh.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Just saw the replay of the Turkey goal at the end of the game. What an amazing goal.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
how many sportscenter guys can accurately give a soccer highlight? really? Brian kenny is a pro, but that was just awful. weren’t they watching this game right before going live?
June 20th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
I told you that euros are soft.
/Whitlock
June 20th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Brian Kenny hates soccer. After the Champions League Final he interviewed Tommy Smyth and just went straight to criticism over having PKs. He should never be allowed to do soccer highlights.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
TBL -
You’re right Kenny is a pro, but he lets his hatred of soccer get in the way. That was brutal.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
TOTALLY forgot that the Turkey keeper, who made a save on the final PK, was the BACKUP. their starter is the 6-7 guy who got a red card in the waning mins for Czechs …
June 20th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
oh! i remember that. what a douche
June 20th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
at almost the exact same time as the PKs, Aramis Ramirez hit a walkoff job for the Cubs to beat the Sox.
Just thought you guys should know.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
The man of the match for the first 120 minutes was Modric…then in the 121 minutes he shat the bed. God I love the Euro Cup…this is the tournament that should get Americans interested in soccer.
BTW TBL, have you heard anything about the ratings? Alot of my extended facebook network seems to be following the euros, so maybe there’s a spike in ratings?
