Our New Favorite Announcer: Derek Rae
Media Gossip/Musings, Soccer June 25th. 2008, 12:19pm
A mix of the soothing Scottish accents in Bravehart, a strong vocabulary, and a wanton lust for soccer, and you’ve got Derek Rae, our new favorite announcer. (We must commend ESPN’s entire Euro 2008 soccer crew – the studio hosts have been on point and Andy Gray and Tommy Smyth consistently ooze passion. It is much-needed announcing relief after the disastrous showing by Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson at the NBA Finals.) This feeling will probably subside once Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery start calling college hoops again in November, but Rae has had such a strong run this month, we often find ourselves rewinding goals just to hear his call. A sampling of lines we liked from Rae from Saturday’s scintillating Russia 3, Netherlands 1 quarterfinal result:
“He packs a feral wallop”
“Delicious stuff it was”
“A kaleidoscope of shifting emotion”
“They were decided underdogs against the Clockwork Orange and they made a mockery of that underdog status.”
“From Brilliant Orange to absent orange”
And there’s this sweet clip from a legendary Manchester/Liverpool match in 2005. Definitely wait for the PK.
(Germany/Turkey post coming at 2:45 in time for the match.)

I like Derek Rae as well. He just does solid work every time out. He’s the Scottish Marv Albert…without the biting.

Um..Milan TBL not Manchester
June 25th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
holy shit manchester? yeah you must be up on that legend
again, no offense, but you shouldnt be commenting on how good the studio team is if you dont know the difference between manchester and milan

Ray Hudson. Nuff said.

Yeah he was good, but I really like Andy Gray, especially in the Italy/Spain match. He was ripping those refs a new one. You’d never hear NBA announcers do that.

Tommy Smyth should not be lumped in with Andy Gray at all. Sure he’s passionate, but in no way measures up to Gray’s knowledge of the game. (though his ‘Aul Onion Bag’ line is miles above anything Gray has in schtickiness)

im going to go out on a limb and say that considering it was phrased as ‘a legendary game’ he doesnt know it was the champions league final. or the champions league title game as its been referred to on here for some reason

TBL, the greater beauty is that it appears one could tack, “That’s what she said.” on to most of his comments.

I’m so glad I’m working from home today and don’t have to worry about spoilers!
June 25th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
ronaldo is hurt!
June 25th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I wish I could be not working from home today.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
(please don’t go into extra time or PKs… my DVR isn’t smart enough to adapt to this!!)

Soccer elitists are worse than Lebronalytes.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
I always tape whatever is coming after as well
June 25th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
@mole – NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
/knows Ronaldo isn’t playing today
June 25th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
not really. it would like like saying that the awesome reception on the winning drive in the superbowl this year was from an eagles/patriots game.
June 25th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Lebronalytes, they’re what the plants crave.
/at least according to Brawndo the thirst mutilator
June 25th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
i talked to the plants and they told me they want water
June 25th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
The game today will either be a slaughter or a replay of the Spain/Italy game…not sure which I’d rather see.

Great points, TBL. ESPN’s coverage of this tournament (Foudy aside) has been top notch. Andy Gray’s calls of the first two Holland games were outstanding: “How I love this game!”

I like Rae, no doubt, but I don’t know if it’s not somewhat disingenuous to single him out as being a cut above. What’s your sample size for english-speaking Euros that announce soccer games that you hear on a regular basis? The ones I listen to are limited to what ESPN puts out for this tournament and the Prem games on FSC. All of them have a charming lexicon and delivery and describe the game differently than any commentator at an American sporting event.

Amen, Alowaish! Ray Hudson, when he’s on a roll, makes Derek Rae sound like Jim Nantz.
Just imagine a very excitable ex-player rambling out these lines like a north English Gus Johnson.
June 25th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I forgot how bullshit that penalty was.
Great announcing, though!
June 25th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
is this the futbol post?

Rae is tremendous. Here’s hoping he’s on the 2010 World Cup crew. And his enthusiasm comes through despite the fact he’s not in the stadium but sitting in a studio in Bristol because ESPN is cheap.

Exactly. Most of the Euro announcers are similar to Rae: more descriptive and imaginative than any American. It’s something that’s new for American sports viewers, so it definitely sounds cool cause we’re used to staid, repetitive number 1 guys like Mike Breen. One fresh, exciting, enthusiastic guy like Gus Johnson comes along and we all go nuts over him.
Plus, soccer lends itself to that style of announcing, with the gradual you-can-see-it-coming buildup of a play or a strike that just misses.
Also, anyone who’s ever played the FIFA soccer video games knows how great Derek Rae is even if they never watch soccer.
