Nothing Like a DUI to Get You on the Trade Block
NBA June 23rd. 2008, 2:54pm
Let’s recap the end of the Nuggets’ season: Qualify for the playoffs, and in celebration, leading scorer Carmelo Anthony gets a DUI. Then, the Nuggets are swept by the Lakers. Six weeks later … and Denver is playing footsie with Detroit, danging Anthony in hopes of possibly acquiring some talent that a) is familiar with the concept of defense and b) avoids banshee theatrics in public.
Even though Melo’s agent told Chris Broussard on Sunday that his client won’t be moved, how many times have owners had a sudden change of heart? And really, could you blame him for keeping George Karl and trading Melo? Five seasons, five playoff trips, 0-for-the first round is what Anthony’s resume looks like. There’s zero evidence thus far that he makes his teammates better, and it’s not like he’s surrounded by garbage. Still, do you give up on a 23-year-old already?

Is it not worth mentioning that Melo’s Nuggest have won 50, 45, 44, and 49 games in the West? And that his teams have been measurably worse than their first round opponents?
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Oh, and the season before Melo they won 17 games?

Way too early to give up on him.

Definitely one of the most overrated players in the league. Stands around jacking up long shots on offense and plays absolutely zero defense. He’s a lazy punk and a distraction and isn’t nearly worth the headache.

No way Melo leaves. I heard JR “young rich” may be leaving to go play for the Spurs

Sure. Also worth noting: T-Mac has done the same, with considerably less talent. He’s usually hammered.
Melo has powerful agent who gets all of his stuff buried at ESPN.

i’d trade him for the great Starbury and Curry dinner special

i made a stupid comment the day of his DUI arrest. I regret what i said.
No way Melo is overrated. He is one of the best players in the league

T Mac is hammered because he’s been in the league for a decade now and hasn’t gotten past the first round. Plus he ran his mouth with the Magic up 3-1 on the Pistons and it came back to bite him, screw T Mac.
If Melo get’s bounced in the first round a few more years in a row, he will start to get hammered, trust me.

He’s usually hammered.
TBL made a punny

It’s a good thing Detroit picked Darko instead of Mello back in 2003 now they will be the most lethal forward combo in the league.

TBL — Valid point with T-Mac, in terms of playoff performance anyway.
But I would counter: TMac is 29, has been traded twice, and look how well it’s worked out for him and all the team’s involved. Yeah, not so much.
Melo instantly turned that franchise around. He’s a below average defender, and he occasionally does something stupid — but that isn’t necessarily the “real” problem with the Nuggets.
That team gave Kenyon Martin a max deal, and he is terrible when he isn’t injured. Additionally, the team has always lacked a shooter (how’s that working out for LBJ?). The up and down game is fun to watch, but was Denver going to take it any further than the Nash-led Suns were?

He’s one of the best if your only criteria is the ability to score one on one. He doesn’t know the meaning of pass, despite playing significant minutes he averages 2 assists a game in the playoffs. He isn’t just a defensive liability, he’s one of the worst defenders I’ve ever seen. He’s lazy and selfish and as the team leader that attitude permeates the entire team.

@coop- Lebron James wishes he had Melo’s jumper. He is not on the Dream Team 2008 because he is a bum. Denver lacks team defense, we all know that.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
They haven’t just lost in the first round, they haven’t even been competitive, Melo is 3-20 in the playoffs, having never won more than 1 game in a series.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Irish, well they took Jason Kidd, so I’m not exactly sure what the requirements are, since actually being good must not be necessary. He’s got a big name, Nike has a lot of pull with that kind of stuff.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:43 pm
@coop- Kidd is 44-0 in international play. Melo is the second best SF in the NBA. your boy being numero uno
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
He’s one of the best if your only criteria is the ability to score one on one.
Maybe you haven’t watched the NBA lately, but this isn’t a minor detail.
Hollinger’s PER has him as the #2 SF… LBJ is #1, obviously.
He doesn’t know the meaning of pass… One of the worst defenders I’ve ever seen.
That is garbage hyperbole that doesn’t mean anything.
What would the Nuggets be left with without him? Taeshawn Prince? Yeah, that will draw in the crowds and sell jerseys.
It’s not happening.

TBL is just shitting all over the Nuggets today. First you bring up Tskitishvili and Nene, now you post this. What, no mention of drafting LaFrentz instead of Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, or Dirk?
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:52 pm
And really, could you blame him for firing George Karl and keeping Melo?
Fixed.
What exactly has George Karl done to earn coach for life status? At least Larry Brown (the prototype Karl is based from) has won.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Karl made it to the NBA Finals with the Sonics
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm
I refuse to respond to anything referencing PER. You both say the nuggets have bad team defense, any chance because the team leader stands around on defense not giving a shit.
Listen, I know he’s a gifted scorer, but he’s lazy and selfish, and actually winning takes effort and teamwork. Plus who could forget the sucker punch and run, what a bitch. There are about 20 forwards in the league right now that I would rather have.
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Melo is really overrated. That much is for sure.
June 23rd, 2008 at 5:00 pm
LBJ, Pierce, and Caron are considerably better than him.
June 23rd, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I would agree with that, but I don’t know if that makes him overrated. Have people consistently stated that Melo is better than LBJ, Pierce, and Caron? Caron, maybe, but that may just be because he seems a bit underrated.
