Grading ESPN’s NBA Draft Coverage
Media Gossip/Musings, NBA June 27th. 2008, 9:36am
What was ESPN thinking? Their primary crew for last night’s coverage consisted of Stuart Scott (not a bad host), Jay Bilas (good choice, knows his college hoops) and then two guys who a) obviously hope to coach in the NBA again, so their analysis clearly wasn’t objective, and b) obviously watched very little college hoops this season: Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. Those two are the primary reason we thought the coverage overall was pretty disappointing. (Though this guy disagrees.) Hey, look! A report card!
Stuart Scott, B …Putting aside your previous thoughts on the guy, he was palatable last night. These live events, and especially one where trades are happening fast and furious, can be devilish to get a grasp on, but Scott seemed to do an OK job. The whole Shan Foster-looks-like-Usher lead in to the video fell terribly flat.
Mark Jackson, D …When it comes to college basketball, his analysis is a mile wide and an inch deep. Almost every player was a good fit, everywhere, regardless. As for the NBA teams, Stu Scott should have said, “Mark, the way you’re talking, it’s as if everyone’s playoff bound. Anyone in the NBA actually suck, or is every single solitary team ‘heading in the right direction?’” Does the man possess the ability to criticize when necessary?
Jeff Van Gundy, D … He actually said the Rockets, when healthy, are one of the two best teams in the West, right there with the Lakers. Oh, right – he used to coach in Houston. We can say this with some authority – JVG was lobbying harder for a job last night than any of the draftees who sat down to chat with Stephen A. Smith. Viewers want the truth, not some on-the-fence wishy washy bullshit. If you hate the pick, defend it, and vice versa. There were bad picks last night. Just not in Jeff Van Gundy’s eyes.
Jay Bilas, B … Back has to be hurting this morning from carrying those other two jokers. This was the brick by ESPN – since Jackson and Van Gundy seemed to have scant knowledge of all these freshman who played just a year of college ball, Bilas would quickly be called upon to chime in on a pick. Thought he did an admirable job, but clearly needed help. Perhaps next year ESPN will realize that it’s more important to add a second college hoops analyst on the set than an NBA guy. Bilas is no Mel Kiper … then again, nobody is. If ESPN needed Andy Katz for the web and interviews, what about yanking Doug Gottlieb off the radio to sit next to Bilas? Say what you will about Gottlieb – he obviously watched more college hoops than Van Gundy and Jackson combined.
Stephen A. Smith, C …At least they put him in a role where he wouldn’t go into his shtick coma starting at 7:01. For the first three picks he seemed to do a solid job, but as the less obvious picks began happening, he and the voices in his ear weren’t quick enough on their feet. Not sure who gave the edict to ask the same question to every draftee – ‘what are you going to bring to team x?’ – but that got stale. Smith also didn’t seem to have watched enough college hoops to ad lib when necessary.
Ric Bucher, C … Reported all afternoon that the Sonics swapped spots in the Top 10 with the Clippers. Everyone kind of scratched their head … and then it never happened. Did redeem himself later with the Blazers-Pacers deal, and moreso with the revelation of the Darrell Arthur kidney situation.
Doris Burke, B … Maybe it’s just us, but what is the fascination with interviewing the parents of players? Is there a hope that maybe one of them will breakdown in tears of joy in a made-for-TV moment? They should have just put Burke at the same table with the Lopez Brothers to shoot the shit. Those guys seemed pretty chatty. Everyone was wondering if Darrell Arthur would do an interview as he slid down the charts … and even though she only got off two questions, Burke did fine in that spot.
Dick Vitale, C- … Effervescent as usual. Had him at a B+ … until his end-of-the-first-round-rant. Like how he slammed Larry Brown (not by name, obviously) for taking Darko a few years back instead of ‘Melo. After the first round though, we’re not sure why he was surprised Russell Westbrook went ahead of DJ Augustin and Kevin Love. Is he aware of Seattle’s needs? It’s lunacy, just like his “minimum of three years in college” idiocy – why should these kids serve three years of indentured basketball servitude so the schools can pocket all the winnings? Fuck that. What’s with the Mark Jackson blowjob? Good player does not equal great coach, as we’ve seen before. And then, the coup de grace – a completely unnecessary mention of North Carolina despite the school having nobody get drafted. If Vitale had mentioned Duke, we would have vomited, cursed the ghost of Mark Alarie, and given Dookie V an F. The UNC plug bumped him down to a C-.
Andy Katz, A … Criminally underused considering he’s their No. 1 college basketball source. Would have been much better suited out front as a ying to Bilas’ yang, or interviewing the players as they were drafted. There weren’t a whole lot of hard hitting questions asked all night, but Katz got in at least two to Bayless. Quick to get word from Kansas coach Bill Self about the Darrell Arthur kidney condition also was impressive.

I didn’t get to catch too much of the coverage last night – did they explain why CDR dropped so low?
June 27th, 2008 at 9:43 am
I missed the draft since I was appearing as a tree knot in Philadelphia.
From the words you typed, it doesn’t seem like I missed much.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:43 am
I barely watched the Draft this year. Too much talking.
I would always condense these things to:
1. Host (Stu Scott)
2. Lead analyst (Jay Bilas)
3. Secondary analyst (Andy Katz)
4. Topic analyst (Fran Frascilla to break down international players)
That’s it. That’s the list. Throw in your Rachel Nichols or Erin Andrews to provide interviews with happy parents (and for eye candy purposes) and that’s your show.

Dicky V looked close to death last night. He is aging bad
Jeff VAn Gundy: F
He said to SVG “Hey this is your brother, J-E-F-F, Jeff.” and then he went on to talk about how fat his brother is.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:45 am
@clown-Jay Bilas kept saying ‘i can’t believe CDR is still on the board.’ thats about it.
please give the coverage permanently to TNT, ESPN sucked.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:46 am
BFFredo – You’re never going to be considered a candidate for a Producer position with Football Night in America with that attitude.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Darko: lol…yes, Larry Brown was the one that wanted a teenage euro player, thats high comedy…
June 27th, 2008 at 9:49 am
95% of these players are going to be a dissapointment, why bother putting the talent on the show to talk about them?
June 27th, 2008 at 9:50 am
Some guy got picked out of the D league last night
CDR will play well with Devon Harris and Lebron James. Plus, big Lopez down low. Rod Thorn is making smart moves
June 27th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Is it me, or has TBL been using more swear words lately?
June 27th, 2008 at 9:52 am
please give the coverage permanently to TNT, ESPN sucked.
so smart that there’s no way they do it.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:52 am
I love you, TBL. You know that, right? Stu Scott an A? Surely, you jest. I haven’t seen anybody try that hard to be funny since the Wayans hosted the MTV Awards.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Didn’t he get picked and then immediately get traded to the Clippers? Fitting.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Van Gundy and Mark Jackson were already approaching overkill in the Finals, what an atrocious decision to have them on the panel.
Was Stu wearing another one of his sugar glazed ties?
June 27th, 2008 at 9:54 am
they need to find a Mel Kiper for the NBA draft. Someone who will openly criticize picks and put his neck out there.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Seriously TBL you can’t give Stu an A. Everytime he was on screen there must have been something going on to the left of the telecast cause he was clearly distracted and kept one eye over there all the time. Why were there not more NBA analysts there?
June 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Chad Ford is basically their attempt at Kiper, but he doesn’t have the charisma. Or the knowledge.
June 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Was not pleased with the analyis especially when they would show on the scren “Needs to Improve” and it was always “Defense” wowreally awesome..I did like how Mario Chalmers needed to improve his point guard skills..thats important when you are a point guard..anywho..CDR to the Nets with Brook Lopez and already having Devin Harris, Sean Williams and cap space for 2010…LeBron probably was really interested last night
June 27th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Didn’t he get picked and then immediately get traded to the Clippers? Fitting.
i thought so as well
June 27th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Bilas mentioned in the wrapup that he never used the words “long” or “upside” with players. He was quite proud of that.
Dick Vitale was insufferable. That guy has no analysis capabilities. “HE PLAYS WITH PASSION AND DESIRE AND HE LOVES THE GAME. WHAT GREAT PASSION!” That’s all he fucking says. Every year ESPN brings Vitale on, and every year he slams the Euros and the college age rules. Go away, dickhead.
If ESPN was looking for NBA analysts in those two chairs, they could’ve used Tim Legler or Greg Anthony, who are far better analysts than sleepless JVG and Mark “My Head Coaching Job Depends on It” Jackson.
Steven A. Smith sucks. Period. He’s terrible. He takes the buddy-buddy approach. Everyone’s his “brother” or “homie” or whatever. Why!? Why can’t the man just be normal?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:03 am
not Legler, very pleased he wasn’t there.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:04 am
“Schtick Coma” – good use of the Benjy Bronk technique, TBL….
June 27th, 2008 at 10:05 am
Am I the only one that sees a B next to Stu Scott’s name?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:06 am
I saw about 3 minutes of the draft, and it was Vitale yelling and waving his arms around. And what’s up with the polo shirt buttoned all the way to the top around that flabby neck? Him and Mc Cain need some tips from the fashion police. Clown, that’s your que.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:09 am
i see the B too CRM.. still not sure what the purpose was of bringing in JVG and jackson for nba draft analysis. who the hell decided to do that?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Shan Foster-looks-like-Usher
VU represent! That’s 2 years in a row we’ve had guys drafted into the NBA. The Mavs will love him as a skilled shooter and half-court player coming off the bench.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
CRM-i was about to say the same. or did TBL change his grade because of consumer demands?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Needs to improve: experience was my favorite one.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
when talking about how many Pac-10 players were taken in the first round, stuart scott delivered this gem not once but twice yesterday ‘…alot of people say that the pac-10 isn’t a basketball conference’ um stu, no one has ever said that.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Bissinger said “B’s are better!”
June 27th, 2008 at 10:17 am
the lopez twins are complete d-bags

yea that annoyed the crap out of me. a conference with Arizona and UCLA not a bball conference? really? come on.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
There is only on BB conference: the ACC.

June 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
The best quote by far was:
“he looked dominant in one on zero drills”
June 27th, 2008 at 10:24 am
There is only one BB conference: the ACC.
/fixed by Stu
June 27th, 2008 at 10:26 am
is there an echo in here?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
ԠDoes the man possess the ability to criticize when necessary?
I thought this was weird too. Jackson hates on players when he’s doing games but he didn’t really criticize one move last night. So, for once, I agree with you here TBL.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
only when i get really worked up.
and Stu Scott didn’t get an A
June 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
about damn time! i am always right! i am never wrong!
June 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Is Billy Wagner 2.0 acting up for anyone else?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Knicks pick is on The Fan right now. I think he’s hungover.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Personally, I was rooting for Darrell Arthur to have a blond chick sitting by him, just so he could be the straight version of Brady Quinn.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Billy Wagner 2.0 is acting like Billy Wagner 0.4
June 27th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I dont feel bad for Darrell Arthur. He should of handled his business better. Not releasing test results to teams that want to give you millions? he lost a lot of money because someone forgot to send the results in
June 27th, 2008 at 10:37 am
When you got a guy like Mark Jackson, you got a guy who will use way too many words to say absolutely nothing. But when you got a network like ESPN, you got a network who revels in their ability to take up airtime and not offer anything to its viewers. So when you get those two forces combining, you’re going to get terrible coverage of my favorite night of the year.
Fuck ESPN.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Joe Benigno is THEE worst. He’s pronouncing Danilo Gallinari, Danielle-O.
Someone needs to rip his mustache off immediately.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
So which Lopez makes more of an impact next year?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
The Nets gave themselves maximum financial effectiveness ($22 million under the projected cap of $58M, July 1, 2010) to recruit potential free agent LeBron James.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:48 am
And Stephen A., what a worthless hack.
“Tell me now…can you play point guard?” to EVERY fucking player.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:48 am
I don’t know a lot about the Lopez brothers, but I see them having almost the same overwhelming presence of the Collins twins.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Irish, you think Reddick is done with you guys now after drafting another white shooter?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:50 am
What other teams are going to make a run at him?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:54 am
@ YYSA: Every other team. Now, they can’t all AFFORD him nor do they have Jay-Z. But every team wants him.
@Size Queen: I’m utterly shocked Reddick has sucked as much as he has in the NBA. I mean, I didn’t expect him to be a great scorer, but I saw him as being similar to Steve Kerr. I’m stunned that he’s been as bad as he has. Maybe Dwight Howard needs to punch him in the eye.
June 27th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Irish, you think Reddick is done with you guys now after drafting another white shooter?
and who was the white shooter the Magic drafted?
June 27th, 2008 at 10:59 am
/made more likely
June 27th, 2008 at 11:03 am
@Irish, Courtney Lee
June 27th, 2008 at 11:04 am
whoops, he’s not white. My bad.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:05 am
yeah i know. He isnt white though, not that it matters
June 27th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I’m surprised no one wants to mention the ugliest hat ever made. The MH Draft day cap
