Dodgers 1, Angels 0: Whenever I see a score update from a baseball game and they show the zero under hits for one of the teams, part of me says, “I should pay attention to that game!” Then another part of me says, “Let’s not get too excited, it’s still the top of the 1st.” Well, yesterday I saw an update around the 3rd inning of the Angels-Dodgers game that showed LA hitless. I guess I should have payed attention.

In the 5th inning Angels’ starter Jered Weaver mishandled a ball “he was unable to handle after bouncing crazily off the bat of Matt Kemp.” (God, I love MLB.com) It was initially ruled a hit and then changed to an error. Kemp ended up scoring the game’s only run.

This prompted an interesting conversation on Baseball Tonight where Tim Kurkjian (I believe) explained that scorekeepers make teams “earn that first hit.” Basically, until there is a clean base hit, scorekeepers will err on the side of error.

Anyway, Weaver was pulled for a pinch-hitter after going 6 no-hit innings. Jose Arredondo then worked hitless 7th and 8th innings. Since the Dodgers were the home team and had the lead, they didn’t get to bat in the 9th which nullified the hard work of Weaver and Arredondo. It was only the 5th time in MLB history that a team lost without giving up a single hit.

D’Backs 6, Marlins 2: I only bring this up because this game also featured an oddity: Marlins’ catcher Matt Treanor caught a bunt attempt with his bare hand and then doubled up the runner on second.
