Anyone See the 60 Minutes Piece on Will Smith?
Movies June 30th. 2008, 12:59pm
It was a re-run, but it got us all worked up to do a post on probably one of the most under-appreciated actors of his age group, Will Smith. (We’re going to say anyone born in the 60s qualifies.) Don’t scoff at the “under-appreciated” tag, either; Smith is usually associated with generic blockbusters that break the bank, but we rarely hear him mentioned in the category of Cruise, Crowe, Depp and Foxx.
The best part of the 60 Minutes interview? Smith went into Hollywood with an agenda (as well as debt – all that rap money he made when he was still in high school – apparently $2.1 million – was squandered in a year or so, and the IRS then took most of his Fresh Prince Money for the first three years): He noticed that the highest-grossing movies of all-time involved three things – aliens/creatures, CGI, and love stories. Hence Independence Day (enjoyed it), Men in Black (avoided it), I, Robot (not bad), etc. Gotta love a man with a plan.
Pardon the list – our favorite Will Smith movies:
Ali - Obviously.
Pursuit of Happyness – Found this to be a gripping move, but also incredibly sad. Remember watching it on a plane and waking the wife up to say, ‘have you seen this movie? You have to see this!’ It can be very, very depressing at times, so much so that we don’t watch re-runs when it’s on cable.
Independence Day – You know we love almost anything involving End of Days.
Bad Boys – Fun movie. Martin was still riding the wave of his TV show and not yet crazy, and Tea Leoni never looked better.
Enemy of the State - We’re a sucker for these types of movies.
Hitch - Thought it would be awful because we’ve never found Kevin James funny … but we enjoyed it, perhaps because Eva Mendes is so delectable.

They had basically the exact same story in USA Today over the weekend. It is weird I am not a huge Will Smith fan but I see most of his movies. Probably will wait for video for Hancock.
Ali – Never seen.
Pursuit of Happyness – Agree completely with your assessment
Independence Day – Badass movie, holds up surprisingly well.
Bad Boys – Not a big fan of these.
Enemy of the State – Never seen.
Hitch – Actually enjoyed this.
Shocked the Legend of Bagger Vance didn’t make this list (heh), or I am Legend.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
come on TBL.. will smith? seriously.. pursuit of happyness is his only legit movie.. independence day? are you kidding me. ugh
June 30th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Are you daring us to mock your taste in movies some more?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
I miss Mitch Hedberg.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
TBL is right, Smith is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. Most of his movies are actually decent, unlike Adam Sandler.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Foxx = Jamie Foxx?
Are you really ranking him up there with Smith, Cruise, Crowe, and Depp? Jamie Foxx is entertaining and puts out some good movies, but his resume is a little short compared to the others.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Ali sucked in my opinion, was really disappointed with it
i agree with you and the enemy of the state movie…always liked that genre
June 30th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Cortes, Ali is a legitimate movie.
I really like Will Smith, but I honestly don’t know why. I loved Men in Black, Independence Day, and even I, Robot. I read Pursuit of Happyness, but never saw the movie.
Re: Wanted (from the previous thread) – I remember now, it’s the one where the dude has to curve the bullet. Didn’t realize it was based on a comic, I love those kinds of movies.
I’m definitely going to see Hellboy II, it looks awesome!
June 30th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
And, add Matt Damon and Brad Pitt to your list ahead of Foxx.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I thought I Robot was dreadful. Had high hopes for that one, the CGI wasn’t good, Bridget Moynahan was awful, the story was dumb, terrible movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
I saw Get Smart last week. It did a good job of straddling the line between hokey family comedy and edgier younger comedy. It’s not an instant classic, but you’ll laugh out loud a few times, and it’s worth the price of admission (as long as you don’t get anything from the concession stand).
June 30th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is without parallel.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
as we’re talking about movies
i watched the bank job and broken flowers this weekend. the former was really entertaining, definitely suggest seeing it. the latter was very dark and somewhat depressing, but bill murray at his best.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
He’ll never do what Robert Guillaume did.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Spencer, have you heard about Super High Me with Doug Benson? I am Netflixing it, sounds interesting. He does 30 days with pot, 30 days without.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I can see the Pitt addition, but Damon was born in 1970, so i will compare him to actors born in the 70s
fuck it i forgot I am Legend
damn
June 30th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Pursuit of Happiness was his best film by far. I am excited about seeing Hanock. It looks like it could have some potential.
The whole “curving bullets” part in Wanted makes me think that this movie sounds like a CGI cartoon posing as an action fil.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
wasn’t Will Smith along with Brad Pitt wanted for the Matrix ahead of Ted Theodore Logan?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
I dont think i have ever watched 60 Minutes
June 30th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Foxx?
Well he won an Oscar, and i’ve liked plenty of his movies:
Kingdom (awesome)
Collateral
Ali
Any Given Sunday
But perhaps I am partial because of my longtime love for In Living Color
June 30th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Mitch was funny as hell. I liked his joke about alcoholism being the only disease people don’t feel sorry for you having.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Who would win in a fight Will Smith or Jamie Foxxxxxxx?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
My in-laws watch 60 minutes religiously, therefore it does not interest me in the least.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Jamie Foxx was great on In Living color. His Wanda impression was hilarious
June 30th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
and hef, you can say whatever you want about my movietaste
this is no dictatorship
I see this joint as a community where people come mostly for the sports/media stuff, but along the way there’s talk about movies, politics, women, etc
June 30th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
In Living Color was great. James Carrey was pretty good in that too.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
I will be seeing Hancock as well
great concept for a movie – a reluctant, angry, drunken superhero
June 30th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
TBL – you’re forgetting Ray in Foxx’s repetoire.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
jamie foxx died to me when he did a song with the king of all douchebags kanye west
June 30th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Jamie Foxx was the only good thing about Ali.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I have gotten so tired of seeing those damn Kitt Kittredge commercials that I have started using that name in place of curse words.
Example: Kitt Kittredge it’s hot in here! or What the Kitt Kittredge just happened!
June 30th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
maybe i just have weird movie tastes but his movies are ridiculous.. men in black and i,robot were horrendous movies.. whatever..
June 30th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
June 30th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Easily my favorite actor. Really, really like I Am Legend. My other faves: Independence Day, I Am Robot, The Legend of Bagger Vance. Anxiously awaiting the release of Hancock.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I would def think that most consider Smith over Foxx, regarless of Oscars (MTV Movie Awards anyone?)
Pursuit of Happiness was a pretty terrible movie. A weak sob story that deviated terribly from the truth.
Ali was absolute garbage.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
hancock is getting pretty shitty reviews
i liked independence day when it came out, but i was in eigth grade and also like korn and limp bizkit. so.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
LIKED*
June 30th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
I liked Foxx in Collateral
June 30th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Hitch sucked so much penis. How many times can you make the “White guy can’t dance” joke? That entire movie is based off of this premise. I actually really like Kevin James too. I think he is a very underrated funny dude.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
fan of will smith’s film work. but nothing will EVER top SUMMERTIME.
don’t forget to add Clooney to the list of actors born in the 60’s.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
You know how all the Joe Chat’s are all sarcastic now? How everyone is baiting Joe Morgan to make him say stupid stuff. I’m not sure if these movie discussions have moved into that realm but it sure feels like it.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
When Smith was on Colberts show last wee he said (paraphrase) You’re right up there with Pitt and Cruise.
I think Smith gets appropriate amount of praise, and I am a huge fan of his work. MIB (first one) was good (second one sucked). Enemy of the State was a highly underrated movie. Independence Day was fun, and Ali was top notch.
If Hancock is good (and I think it will be) I think he belongs on the A-list of top actors. (And I realized that this sets up Clown nicely to “fix” this sentence)
June 30th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
am i the only one who thinks his best work was on Fresh Prince of Bel Aire?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Am I reading IMDB correctly? He is the executive producer of a movie currently in production called MILF & Cookies?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Depp sucks outside of Edward Scissorhands and if you don’t believe me take a new look at his “Jack Sparrow” and how it closely resembles his “Willy Wonka”. The way I see it Depp has two characters, his “crazy” characters (ex. Wonka, etc.) and his “normal” characters (ex. Brasco, Gilbert) he really has no in between, any character hw plays is either his crazy or his normal act. I think Depp is “cool” but I think he is over rated as an actor.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Instead of seeing Wanted go read the graphic novel by Mark Millar. It is very cinematic, but Hollywood could never do half the stuff in the book. JG Jones based the artwork for the characters on Eminem, Halle Berry, and Tommy Lee Jones. How that translates to James McAvoy, Angie Voight, and Morgan Freeman, I have no clue.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
My only diagreement with Will Smith being great is that he is rarely opposite another alpha dog male actor anymore. It is almost like he doesn’t like having another actor who is worth a shit on the same film as himself. Just sayin’.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
wanted looks like absolute trash.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Took me a second to figure that one out.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Mags…kevin james in hitch doesnt count?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Irish, agreed with you on Collateral, thought that was a really good movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Whatever, Jazzy Jeff is way more underrated than Will Smith.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Fuck Will Smith. New James Bond Trailer.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Mole, TBL’s right, Independence Day still holds up. Great summer movie.
I can’t watch action movies if Angelina Jolie is in them. All I can think about when I see her is her 50 kids and the fact that she’s banging Brad Pitt.
I’ve heard Wall-E is being compared to The Incredibles, so for that fact alone I will go see it. I LOVE The Incredibles!
June 30th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
That is classic. Great stuff.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
@mags-idk, he had a bit part in that Chocolat movie where he just played a regular guy and he got really good reviews for that. and he has one of the best death scenes in movie history when he gets sucked into the bed.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
I absolutely agree, and I thought this when I saw Willy Wonka.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Mags – although Depp was very good in Secret Window.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I thought Depp was good in the Secret Window.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
fear and loathing
dead man
June 30th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
his willy wonka was more ed wood…
June 30th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
arnold > anyone
end of discussion.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Add Blow to that list Mole.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
kevin arnold?
/TBL
June 30th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
spence, I agree with you, but I believe TBL was trying to keep the discussion to actors born in the 60s, not actors who are in their 60s.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
@Bear
I think Depp is fine and I enjoy the movies he is cast in, I just feel like many of them would be just as good with someone else playing the roles other than him.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
man russel crowe is only 44? i would have guessed he was pushing 60. dude has looked like shit since right after gladiator
June 30th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Best In Loving Characters
Handyman
Fire Marshall Bill
Wanda
Homeless guy with pickle jar
Homey D Clown
June 30th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
In Living Color, sorry
June 30th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
holy shit…i did not realize arnold was 61. whatever, he’s still the best. motherfucker killed predator.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Hancock is going to be a bust.
Also really wish he didn’t make those ignorant political comments on The Today Show because I like his movies for the most part.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Homeboy Shopping Network
Men on Film
June 30th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
My favorite is I Am Legend. Probably in the minority on this.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
PurdueMatt if by bust you mean make hundreds of millions of dollars then yes you are right on about Hancock.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Danny Glover killed predator too and he’s a whiney bitch.
/not sold on ahhhnold
June 30th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
The USA Today article was trying to say that because Smith kills his dog in I Am Legend that might stop people from seeing Hancock. I didn’t even remember he killed his dog and what idiots won’t see his next movie because of that?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Movie studio executive #1: We need a “safe” black man for this role. Someone who won’t scare off the white women.
Movie studio executive #2: I’ll see if Will Smith is available.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
IT’S NAAT A TUMAAH!
June 30th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Arnolds last good movie was True Lies, his last really good movie was Total Recall, everything after that was such crap…
June 30th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
My problem with Will Smith (and is not so much a problem as it is a critique) is that he is basically Will Smith in every movie he does except Ali which I hated (Mann tried to hard) and Pursuit( which you actually suspended disbelief and forgot it was Will Smith) Denzel does this too, great actor but most of his movies are him being Denzel. Johnny Depp I think gets underlooked because he acts in every movie and is never Johnny Deep even in the Pirate movies. I think that guy is our best actor.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
New James Bond trailer:

June 30th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
I’m a cop you idiot!!!
The Arnold soundboard provided at least 3 months worth of entertainment my freshman year of college.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Vince Vaughan is the definition of playing the same character all of the time.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
sparty…so Terminator 2 and Kindergarten Cop sucked? FUCK YOU.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Who is your daddy and what does he do?
June 30th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
im sorry, but Casino Royale sucked.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
The only actor working today who merits the title of Superstar besides Johnny Depp. Action, drama, comedy, romatic movies; he can do them all. Even his mediocre movies like I Am Legend and (I’m predicting) Hancock, he’s usually the only reason they work.
BTW, TBL, switch Bad Boys to Bad Boys II (the film where Michael Bay said, “F–k it! Get a load of this!”)
June 30th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
TBL would come in here and defend Arnold, but he is watching Eraser for the third time today.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
The only Johnny Depp movie I liked was Donnie Brasco.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
eraser rocked…james caan was such a bitch in that movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Agreed, Bad Boys II was so sweet when it came out
June 30th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
RWH-couldn’t have said it better, especially about Denzel. Anytime someone tells you to watch a Denzel Washington movie, you could tell them the plot before you see it, and 9times out of 10 you will be correct.
June 30th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I think people sleep on Smith in The Legend of Baggy Pants.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
@spence,
not a big fan of T2. The special effects for the bad terminator was cool, but the movie, eh same plot as the first. Kindergarten Cop was ok, not as good as Twins, that was Arnold at his best with comedy.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Denzel Washington > Will Smith
June 30th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
You really think Denzel acts exactly the same in every movie?
Training Day
American Gangster
The Hurricane
Philadelphia
I think his acting was different in all of those movies.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Another Denzel staple is yelling. If he is in a movie, you can pretty much count on him having a scene where he does a lot of screaming at someone. I think even if he was in a Disney movie about butterflies and snuggling he would still find the time to scream at someone.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
sparty…t2 was the best movie ever made in the history of movies, it was the best. it was so good, it turned me redundant. plus it was vastly different than the first one, there was a gatling gun in t2, so there.
all kidding aside, when i first saw t2, i damn near crapped my pants. back in the early 90’s that shit was epic.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I agree with Die-Eagles-Die on Happyness…I Am Legend totally won me over though. There aren’t many actors who can carry a screen all by themselves for such a long period of time. I wasn’t able to overlook the hokey Wild Wild West and MIB II for a long time
June 30th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
yea, denzel relies on his acting staples in pretty much every movie. he’s Denzel Washington, not whatever character he’s supposed to be.
not a bad thing, per se, but still kinda annoying. tho he was pimp in Hurricane.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
oh, and denzel was AWESOME in mo better blues.
/waiting for clown to come and call jazz gay
June 30th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Ali was terrible and beyond too long. I just remember the annoying music that was playing throughout. Just not good.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Denzel plays the same character all the time. Prideful, noble person in a power position. Why doesn’t he ever take on any humble roles? Do you think he could’ve pulled off Happyness like Smith?
June 30th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Training Day
American Gangster
The Hurricane
Philadelphia
ahem, black man against the system…
June 30th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
really? you mean he wasn’t a black man up against the system?
June 30th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
crap.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Hate all you want but Denzel was incredible in Training Day.
Agree with you Spencer, I still think T2 is the shit, the CGI holds up decently even after all of this time.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I can’t believe everyone really thinks Denzel acts exactly the same in every movie! What about Glory? What about Malcom X? Come on now.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Sparty, to be fair in Virtuosity he was a black man against technology.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Man on Fire. My favorite Denzel movie
June 30th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Sportsgal, how long ago were those movies? I think he’s in the phase of his career like De Niro, Pacino, and Nicholson where they kinda just do the same things over and over for the big checks
June 30th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
@sportsgal,
ok wait, you are just being sarcastic now, right?
June 30th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Denzel was sweet in inside man — underrated movie
June 30th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
@cbh, ah a young russel crowe in that movie…
June 30th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
@cbh, technically…technology is a type of system … since … oh nevermind
June 30th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Crimson Tide anyone?
June 30th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
now crimson tide was a good movie, but Hackman carried that movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Denzel was sweet in inside man — underrated movie
i agree
June 30th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Spike Lee had some good stuff for Inside Man, it was one of his better joints.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Denzel does not play the same person in every movie. He was phenomenal in Training day, but IMO Man on Fire was his best Movie. When that little girl gets out of the car and starts running towards him, I always get a little choked up.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
speaking of being the same in every movie…gene hackman is pretty solid at that. same with that douchebag tommy lee jones.
but you can’t hate on that. not everyone can be a true chameleon like arnold.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I think Kevin james is hilarious…not in his movies, but TV. I agree with Sean Jean in that regard.
A guy that used to be Sr. Legal Counsel for my company was in the “Summertime” music video dancing at the picnic. It’s the hardest I’ve ever laughed at work when I watched it on youtube.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
just because he was the antagonist in Training Day doesn’t change the fact that he played it any differently.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
really, Gene Hackman is the same guy in Superman as Crimson Tide?
June 30th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Ruckmaker – I don’t know, I think Inside Man (great flick) and American Gangster were different roles for him. They might be similar to stuff he’s done in the past, but it’s not like he acted exactly the same.
Sparty – Training Day was him being a black man up against the system? He was a crooked cop! American Gangster involved him being a massively rich drug lord. He was a lawyer in Philadelphia representing a gay man with AIDS, so I’d say Tom Hanks was the man up against the system in that movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Thanks for the Spoiler Alert.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Clown, Bruce Willis is dead the whole time in the Sixth Sense, oh and Darth Vader is Luke’s father.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
No votes for Six Degrees of Separation?
/inciting the homophobic onslaught
June 30th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
i dont count movies i haven’t seen, i just speak authoritatively and blindly consider it fact.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Nic Cage is the king of playing Nic Cage in every role he does
June 30th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
and Titanic sinks at the end of the movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
American Gangster was very disappointing. It wasn’t a bad movie but nowhere near as good as it should have been.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
a black man trying to help a gay man, I don’t like those odds…
again, whether or not he was crooked, or the bad guy, it is still him on his own.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I am telling you a studio needs to cast Nic Cage and Keanue Reeves in a movie together and call it Torture.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Clown if you haven’t seen Man on Fire by now, you don’t deserve a spoiler alert.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
but Nic Cage playing Nic Cage is fun as hell.
oh, the US beats russia and goes on to win the gold in Miracle…
June 30th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
@Bill-that was the movie role that got him every role he ever wanted.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Underrated Denzel movie, underrated movie all together is Deja Vu.
Very solid, cool premise, tho a bit tricky to patch together some parts.
Plus, chick in it – Paula Patton, is boomtown, surprised she’s not more popular.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
speaking of Nic Cage…for some sick reason, 8mm is one of my favorite movies.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
8mm is a great movie. I felt like I needed a shower after watching it.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Worst Nic Cage movie – Face Off
June 30th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
not a Kevin James fan? Why not? King of Queens backlash?
I enjoy James’ stand-up routine “Sweat the Small Stuff.” Maybe its because I’m a dopey fat guy and relate to all his humor.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
If we’re talking all-time most under-appreciated actors, Hackman would be at the top of the list.
(Dennis Haskins is #2)

On Depp. Finding Neverland, Benny and Joon. How do those stack up to his type casts?
Also there is a difference in being type casted, and being a very good actor who plays a role very sucessfully so directors use them in a similiar manner in the future.
Tom Hanks was the same guy (by this I mean casted in a simliar type of role) in Splash, Bachleor Party, The Burbs, Tuner and Hooch and even the money and Big to some degree. Does that mean he couldn’t act?

the most underrated actor in Hollywood-Christian Bale

June 30th, 2008 at 2:35 pm

June 30th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
unfortunately we just lost a guy who was one his way to being one of the best, in Heath Ledger.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Tom Hanks was great in Road to Perdition. great movie
June 30th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
The Machinist is a good Christian Bale movie
June 30th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies..(okay, enough)
June 30th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Will Smith is a good actor, but he needs a few epic movies to put him up there with those TBL mentioned.
Depp is good, but not in a mainstream kind of way.
Denzel is one of the best actors of our time. He has some trademarks, yes, but bringing yourself to the role is what makes an actor good.
Matt Damon deserves to be on the top list for sure.
Christian Bale is definitely overlooked.
Kevin James is funny as hell.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Sparty, totally agreed on Heath Ledger.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
The new Batman > the new Bond

June 30th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
American Psycho = Awesome
June 30th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Bale is overlooked but Will Smith needs more epic movies???? Independence Day, Men In Black and I am Lenged all grossed over $250M
June 30th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Just a suggestion. You might want save the movie posts for a monthly bit. Bagging on your cinematic taste ever few days is going to get tiring.
June 30th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
To be honest, I just don’t think Denzel has a lot of range, or that he’s kind of settled into a comfort zone with the calm, cool, collected operator.
June 30th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Also, I like Bale, but what the F is up with that Batman voice? He sounds like someone shot him in the neck or something
June 30th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
just skimmed the comments so forgive me if this was posted before: I am Legend was, by far, his most dissapointing movie.
June 30th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Bale is tight in “Harsh Times”–great flick
June 30th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Denzel is one of the best actors of our time. In Training Day he was just excellent. I even liked him in Deja Vu. Hackman didnt carry Crimson Tide.
Samuel L. Jackson…..anyone?

June 30th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I watched it Sat night. dont forget Michael Rappaport
June 30th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
True Romance people. Maxim did a nice retrospective a few months back. http://www.maxim.com/Trueromance15yearslater/articles/24494.aspx?src=tsttr
Not the greatest of movies, but the back-story behind that movie getting made is worthy. And I gained much respect for Tony Scott after reading his accounts of slapping Patricia Arquette around.

Will Smith Is Perhaps The Nicest Star In Hollywood Certainly The Most Bankable. A Good But Not Great Actor He Is The Box Office King Not Because He Is A Great Actor Much The Same Way Ahnold Was King For A Number Of Years But No One Would Ever Confuse Him With Brando.

June 30th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Yes! Michael Rappaport, I couldnt think of his name, and Gary Oldman. oops yeah, wrong Arquette, it was Patricia not Rosanna.

My concern with Hancock is that it has to be a complete movie. I am sure that the first half of Hancock as a boozed up bum of a superhero will be sweet, but then, like Old School… and then every Simpson episode for the past 6 years… They have to end the flick and give the viewer some sort of complete experience. It’s the last half of Hancock that I pretty much know I will dislike, and it begins with him dumping the shitty ski cap in favor of the neoprene superhero suit.
But then again, I could just watch him fling the whale at those Best Buy Asians for three hours and consider myself a happy Clevelander… as would most reasonable men.
June 30th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
speaking of bale/ledger has anyone else seen I’m Not There?
