Sports Talk Radio Chatter: Mike & the Mad Dog
Media Gossip/Musings July 1st. 2008, 11:30am
Been probing around the radio industry for the last two weeks, attempting to get a grip on what’s going to happen to one of the most popular sports talk radio shows in the country, Mike and the Mad Dog (NYC radio partners for 18 years, and the show is simulcast on the YES Network). The Watchdog, Neil Best, has been tracking this story intently. Among the rumors we’re hearing that are floating about the transom of the industry:
* Mad Dog Russo’s primary backup plan, should this tandem split up in July - as Francesa hinted at last week - is Sirius radio, a source said. The same source said Russo has connections there.
* According to a source, Francesa, feeling empowered by mild success with his Sunday night sports show, Mike’d Up, started to explore further TV options earlier this spring when the relationship between the two hosts frayed. Francesa was a CBS Sports analyst in the late 1980s and according to his wikipedia, in the running for the Monday Night Football gig that eventually went to Dennis Miller in 2000.
* One popular theory is that WFAN would keep one host, should the pair decide the partnership is untenable. Sources feel this would be a disaster for the show, since the reason for the pair’s success is that the supremely arrogant Francesa brings a modicum of credibility to the airwaves (boasting about his cozy relationship with Bill Parcells, for instance), and plays well against Russo’s silly, fanboy, gibberish antics.
* Though nobody at ESPN will confirm this, the WWL is reportedly thrilled with this development, because it opens the door for Mike Tirico, Scott Van Pelt and the insufferable Michael Kay to put a dent in the sizable ratings stranglehold Mike & the Mad Dog have on NYC’s daytime talk radio.

You missed one other MAJOR thing here…Francesa was close to agreeing with a long term deal with FAN. He didn’t sign yet. Mad Dog’s contract does not coincide with Mike’s.This maybe a ploy for A) Mike to get a better deal and B) Dog to extend his deal past 2009. In sports terms, it might be their chance at one last big contract. Both are in their 50’s. This was brought up by MikeFrancesa.com which is not affiliated with Mike Francesa but has inside info on the show.

TBL showing its east coast bias. Never heard them.

michael kay = douchebag personified

Nice work by Intern Bill with my link.
And credibility? Seriously? People listen for the train wreck. I know I do.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:38 am
Owl…Mike and the Mad Dog have a national show on YES, they are the longest running and most successful Radio Sports Talk Show, big sports talk guys are losing their gigs around the country and these guy and them splitting up changes the sports radio landscape for ever. It is a big deal, even if you never heard of them.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:39 am
Since today must be a slow sports day for TBL (another Mike and Mad Dog post) are we going to get an open thread for Hockey Free Agency, which starts in 20 minutes (commence the “hockey’s not relevant jokes”)
July 1st, 2008 at 11:43 am
I listen to them so I can hear Russo say words like ‘Colorado’ and ‘Phillies’. Anything with multiple ‘L’s’, ‘R’s’ or a combination of the two.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:46 am
I would like a Fantasy Bass Fishing post
July 1st, 2008 at 11:49 am
@Roman-Can it be a “National Radio Show” on YES, if YES is not broadcasted nationally?
July 1st, 2008 at 11:49 am
The YES network is national? Seriously never heard these guys and I don’t think anyone West the mississippi has either. I love when NYers think everyone should care.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:51 am
HOCKEY POST! HOCKEY POST! HOCKEY POST!
July 1st, 2008 at 11:51 am
For the first time in the history of TBL, Owl and I agree on something: we don’t care about this.
The internet will now shut down for the day.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:52 am
i live in cincinnati and have only heard of them because of TBL
July 1st, 2008 at 11:52 am
I live in NY, have heard of them, and have never listened to them. I don’t understand radio on television.
Except for Stern. I understand naked chicks.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:53 am
The Mad Dog loves a good news nugget.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:55 am
Here’s the best hockey post I could find.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:57 am
oh no, a narrowminded local show that’s broadcast on YES only b/c the fat guy is a hyyyyuuuge Yankee Homer might be going under. Whatever should I do with my time?
sports radio and sports talk shows lost it’s credibility when talking heads became screaming heads.
Time to bring on the next best thing. Here’s to progress.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:57 am
1050 still won’t put a dent in the ratings…They’re not New York centric enough.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:04 pm
.
These two were the first relevant sports radio guys, and they actually talk instead of scream. Russo only yells when it’s deserved (see epic Pacman Jones rant).
It’s just too bad other people have taken their formula and turned it into a cartoon.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:05 pm
1050 certainly is trying to be NY centric…only reason I could think of Osi Umenyura hosting mike and mike today with Eric kusilias.
I know i butchered those names.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
i don’t get the hate of Michael Kay.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:12 pm
YES is National, It is broadcast on Direct TV as well as more cable systems than any other regional sports network. Plus there are many posts on here thatmany people don’t care about. TBL’s bread and butter is Sports Media News and Gossip. If this isn’t sports media news and gossip I don’t know what is.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:13 pm
3.75 a year for stuart? yeah they cant afford hossa. dont really need him anyways
July 1st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
I love it, too. These guys rock.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:14 pm
YYSA…I don’t think everyone should care but it is a relevant post, as relevant as the Guy in Pittsburgh getting canned, or Mike North not being renewed, or nay thing Dave Damnshek does (I think his show had to change if I am not mistaken)TBL does sports media..this is sports media
July 1st, 2008 at 12:15 pm
lozo would be able to give you a great rundown. he has a few choice examples on his website.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Okay Roman, I’ll give you its a relevant post but what I wont give is
That is not true
July 1st, 2008 at 12:18 pm
@mole - Did stuart sign with the Wings? Where are you seeing this? The wings are about $12-$14M under the cap, so they have enough for Stuart at $3.75M but not $4M which was what everyone was speculating he’d get. I think the Wings are trying for Sundin over Hossa and will offer him a one or two year deal.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:18 pm
erik cole for jani pikkkkkanen
July 1st, 2008 at 12:19 pm
i did hate his A-Rod is A-Mazing HR call last year. but idk, guy doesn’t bother me when i watch games. now sterling on the radio, ugh…
July 1st, 2008 at 12:20 pm
for all of you people claiming east coast bias, you are so off the mark. these guys helped make WFAN the first all-sports talk radio station in the country. in the terms of radio news this is HUGE, like Stern announcing he’s going to Sirius. when it comes to radio, people do not change their listening patterns easily. it’s one of the toughest mediums to manage, and they are in the toughest radio market in the country.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:20 pm
I’m reading that Rolston is hoping for a deal from the Wings. Sounds like he wants insane money too.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:20 pm
tsn has a somewhat up to date signing thing
yes to the wings
July 1st, 2008 at 12:21 pm
If the Pens lose Malone and Hossa I’m putting my head through this monitor (pointing to the 20″ monitor in front of me).
July 1st, 2008 at 12:22 pm
The Mike Green signing was a little higher than I expected after one good year, but the Caps couldn’t afford to lose him.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
YYSA..it does though as the most successful and biggest earners their spitting up changes the way Sports radio as to look for profits, the Same as Stern Leaving, whoever FAN (CBS Radio)replaces them with will be the standard bearer, it is how radio operates, if they are replaced by a low rent sports radio show than sports radio goes further into the low rent gutter, if they choose intelligent talk and it works and earns it will be copied…It is not a NY centric comment it is a radio centric comment, Radio Companies are based in NY, what works here is replicated elsewhere
July 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Good to see Dupuis come back. Nice role player.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:24 pm
7 yrs/$31.5M for Malone was too much, especially with $14-16M of it front loaded for the first two years. Orpik is much more irreplaceable to the Pens than Malone.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:25 pm
There’s no way Rolston can get insane money to play for the Wings. Holland won’t be offering it to him. The price you pay for playing for the best team in the league is taking less than what would be available to you if you signed with a shitty team with lots of cap space.

How true 412, funny stuff.

Had to get out of Bizzaro World.

Malkin is supposedly close to signing an extension. If that happens–and Hossa leaves–I may give my monitor a terrorist fist-jab rather than a full-on headbutt.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:29 pm
How dare you!

Malkin getting a deal that mirrors Crosby’s even though he was non-existent in the finals? Interesting.

sorry Tommy…didn’t mean to make hi older but the thought process is still the same…their appeal wanes the older they get.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:36 pm
the only players that showed up in the first five games of the finals were fleury, hossa, and sid. malkin was the only one in game six.
every other team in the league would probably give him more money than he is taking from the pens, so dont act like this is a bad deal, its a fucking great deal
July 1st, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I will not claim that this topic isn’t worthy of coverage. This is a relevant topic. But the hyperbole that seems to hover around these 2 yahoos is a bit stunning.
TBL says:
Um. Yeah. Obviously huge news? In that market, sure.
Or Richard Deitsch:
Woah. You can technically claim it’s national. But come on. It’s not national radio. And if you are going to argue cable/sat … it’s on a niche cable station that is not carried on any standard packages outside of the local market.
Historical significance? Sure. But it is still local sports talk. Sorry about it.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:42 pm
mole, I made the comment because I’m a Wings fan and one of the Pens superstars completely choked in the finals. I could care less whether or not this is a “great deal.”
July 1st, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Malkin had a nasty bout of flu during the Finals. From what I gather, that accounted for his disappearance.
And, much as I like Crosby, Malkin is the better player…so if you can get him signed for a like contract, you absolutely do it.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:43 pm
so you care?
July 1st, 2008 at 12:44 pm
he came out and said none of that mattered and was just a false excuse, he said he lost his game for two weeks and it was too late when he got it back. it happens, im not gonna hold it against him
July 1st, 2008 at 12:46 pm
I think it absolutely is a big deal, when the book of sports talk radio is written
by meby Tony Kornheiser, these guys get their own chapter (along with Pete Franklin, Ron Barr, Tony Bruno, Jim Rome and definitely not Michelle Tafoya).Since TBL’s blog covers the sports media, and this is indeed a giant sports media story, why would he not cover it?
July 1st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
WFAN, being such a blowtorch, isn’t really even local. People can listen to the station from Boston north all the way down to DC. I know lots of people in Philly who listen to WFAN over WIP or any of the other stations that have popped up in the market over the years.
Given that Steve Cohen is head of sports at Sirius and he used to work at WFAN, there’s an “in” for both Mike or Chris there.
July 1st, 2008 at 1:00 pm
You didn’t just go there.
July 1st, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Never seen or heard either of them utter a word. I also don’t think Stern is funny at all.

The 4112, you need to get out the history of sports talk radio textbook and do your homework! (Chapters 1-3) - answer the questions at the end of the text.
I didn’t say I like Franklin, but he was THE sportstalk pioneer.
July 1st, 2008 at 1:33 pm
cursed - You’re a Cleveland guy, so I suppose I can give you a pass on Franlin. Make sure you include Myron Cope in that book.
I do have to ask, why do you constantly refer to me as “The 4112″? I apologize if you have some sort of visual impairment and I appear to be making light of it. Not a big deal. Just wondering…
July 1st, 2008 at 1:39 pm
THE412 I’m a bad reader. It really looks like 4112 to me when I first look at it, sorry bud.
Oh and as for Pete, you know who took over for him at the Fan after his short-lived stint there? Mike and Mad Dog!

Being an Older-American, I’ve been aware of Francesa for many years. Back in the day, he was the college football analyst on TV, and he abso-fucking-lutely knew his shit. He was Mel Kiper without the hair and the Rainman personality.
