Hossa to the Red Wings, and Other NHL Haps
NHL July 2nd. 2008, 2:10pm
The NHL free agency season began yesterday with a whimper … and just registered a bang: Marian Hossa, a stud who dominated in the NHL postseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins, is headed to the NHL Champion Detroit Red Wings, according to Canada’s TSN.
We know not who this female is, but everyone knows women flock to hockey players. Now that Hossa is going to get $7.4 million for one season in Detroit, this brunette may have some serious competition.
Float on Cloud Nine has an extensive recap of everything that has happened.

Good luck with your one-year contract, putz. I sincerely hope you don’t break both of your legs. I really mean that.

Weren’t there like 500 million moves yesterday, in what world is that a whimper?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Hardly a whimper
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Worst post ever!

July 2nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
And apparently Dallas wasn’t quite meeting their douche quota with T.O., Jason Kidd, and Pacman…so they added Sean Avery.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
You missed out on what would’ve been a 200-comment post easy yesterday. I can only imagine the Jeff Finger comments.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
We get one NHL post and TBL makes an asinine statement that yesterday was a whimper for the NHL. Ridiculous. At least pretend like you know what’s going on.
Also looks like Avery just signed with Dallas and is getting a partial no trade. Should be interesting to see how he and Steve Ott work together.
Why would Hossa gamble with a one year deal? There’s no way he gets that money next year if he gets hurt or underachieves. Weird move.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I believe “a whimper” refers to the sporting world, as a whole.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
When Jeff Finger scores a $3.75 million per year contract, you know shit is crazy. Maybe it’s time for the owners to lock themselves out again.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
If that’s the case then it’s a poorly written sentence. Either way it’s dumb.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Jeff Finger, what a great name.

Great, now along with the free iphone ad, now we have a free Wii ad. Freaking wonderful…
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Yeah…why is she with the guy from Radiohead?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:22 pm
irish – What are you bitching about? Tampa cleaned up yesterday! Dicks.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
im not bitching about nothing. I like to play broom hockey, thats all
I will go see Melrose this year. Vinny L is still the man
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Gerald Green signed with the Mavericks.
/more important than the GheyHL
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
This is a big gamble by Hossa. He’ll play one year in Detroit and then have to move on elsewhere when they have to re-sign Zetterberg. Depending on the salary cap situation of other teams, he may not get another sweetheart opportunity (like $50 million to have Sidney Crosby feeding him pucks).
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
TBL, when the hell are we getting a midget tossing FA post?!?!?!!? I keep reading about it in Obscure Sports Quarterly but have no opportunity to discuss it with the fine gentlemen and ladies of this blog!

TBL finally has a hockey post and people crash it with NBA crappola!
/going back to the TPS reports
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
I think the Whalers are gonna take it this year.
/Better, 412?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Hossa should’ve took the long term contract when he had the chance. The Oilers offered $9 million annually.
The cap can’t keep going up, can it?
NHL’s cap = $56.7 million
NBA’s cap = $55.6 million
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Kobe > Lebron.
I’m going to venture a guess that this chick won’t have much competition for Hossa’s attention in Detroit. Just a hunch.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Yeah you know what, go ahead and lead with Hossa. Nevermind that the Hawks signed Campbell to an 8-year deal.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
412:
Do you think the Pens will sign Jagr… that’s the rumor. Would Pens faithful take him back?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Kobe > Lebron
hell yeah
July 4th > Canada Day
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Turn it to the Ocho. They’ve had Mike Tirico covering it all week and will be showing some stuff on Classic later including the “Boise Miracle” match.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Vinny L and Martin ST Louis > Crosby and Malkin
/trying to start something
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
jibble – I think it’s a distinct possibility. Like any other fan base, Pens fans just want to see their team win. So, if Jagr helped, he’d be welcomed. I just think he brings far too much baggage and would pollute what is presently a pretty good locker room.
Naslund would be a much better signing. He’s still a productive player, wouldn’t break the bank (still need to set aside $ for others), and…he’s not Jaromir Jagr.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:40 pm
this makes sense, albeit it makes shero look like a horrible GM, it looks like NOONE wants to play for him.
but the guys that could have offered hossa big money for long term deals (chicago, new york, boston) put their money elsewhere. so he takes a one year deal and waits until next year when some teams will have cap space.
still a great trade that brought him there, as they dont make the finals without him, which allows them to spend to the cap. now the question is who the hell are they going to pay?
the contracts thrown around are ridiculous, if they dont control it we are looking at another labor stoppage soon. bettman is awful
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Pittsburgh should only sign Jagr if he grows his mullet back.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Jibble – I always thought the relentless booing of Jagr when he returned to the Igloo was bush league. He might not be the kind of leader you want when your team sucks (last year in Pittsburgh, then his two years in Washington), but he made a lot of good memories those first 11 years as a Penguin.
Besides, we may have no choice but to welcome him back after getting shut out in free agency.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
moleman – While I’m clearly disappointed that both Malone and Hossa left, I’m okay with it if it means they are in a better position to tie up Malkin, Fleury, and Staal. That being said, they still need to bring in another winger for Crosby’s line.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
What the fuck is a red wing? Isn’t this a sports site? Why are we talking about Canadians? Where am I?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Malkin has officially signed.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242269&lid=sublink01&lpos=headlines_main
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:47 pm
noone – crosby – noone
sykora – malkin – noone
talbot – staal – kennedy
dupuis – noone – godard
they have a lot of work to do and not many more players to fill the gaps.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
About to leave for vacation, but a few comments:
1. Your Stanley Cup champions in 2009 will be the Detroit Red Wings.
2. Hossa wants to win a cup, and he sure as hell isn’t going to do it with the Penguins.
3. If Jagr comes back to Pittsburgh, he’s going to be boo’d every time he has a mediocre night. Can’t see that being a good situation for him.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
When did he cut it off?
So the Western Conference has Avery, Tucker, and Dion Phaenuf? That’s like the Axis of Douchiness right there
(I know I will love Tucker about a month into the season, but right now…)
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:49 pm
How good does signing Campbell and Huet make the Hawks?
I follow hockey but not enough to really know. Playoff run? Certainly not Stanley Cup w/the Red Wings improving.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Dirty Sanchez – Jagr was booed because of the way he behaved his last couple of years here. He was a miserable, selfish teammate, treated the beat writers poorly, and was generally a whiner. That shit doesn’t fly here! If he keeps his mouth shut, accepts his role, and puts the frigging biscuit in the net the fans will let bygones be bygones.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Hef- The Yotes probably had the best value signing yesterday with Kurt Sauer for $1.75M for four years. That’s a great sign.
And unless the Avs GM signs someone soon I’m not going to be a happy camper around here next season.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
as i understand it right now they are over the cap. those long deals imo make it 100% impossible to keep both of their super rookies
jagrs hitler stache > jagrs mullet
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
With Toews and Kane’s development I could see a playoff run. At first glance I’d say somewhere between 10th and 7th in the West
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I thought the Avs were getting the old band back together for a reunion tour (Foote, Sakic, maybe Forsberg)?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:55 pm
@jibble: what’s a yote?
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Hmm…that seems dumb. I know Kane made me care about the Hawks again. I’d assume they’d keep him when his contract expires.
ugh…so salary problems. F that.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
The Blackhawks have to get Khabibulin off their cap somehow. If they do that, Lang and Havlat will be FA’s next season and dumping those three will aloows the Blackhawks to secure Kane and Toews. They aren’t over the cap by a lot this season and they have a lot of money off the books at the end of the summer so I think they’ll be ok.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
The Hawks are going to move or buyout Khabibulin after signing Huet. That should get them under the cap.
But yeah, good luck keeping both Kane and Toews in 2 years when their rookie deals are up and they’re restricted free agents.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Currently, the Hawks are $1.9MM over the cap. Time to start shedding salaries. And good luck getting rid of Khabibulin and his $6.75MM salary.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm
That’s sooo last season, this season it’s all about taking the Leafs Buyouts. The Avs offseason plan is to take people the fricking Maple Leafs rejected
That’s like hooking up with a chick that Carrot Top turns down.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
plus with the deals you just gave two players who dont deserve anywhere NEAR the money they got, that sets a standard for the team. sure the cap is going to go up but youre probably looking at close to 18-20 million for those two for long term deals
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Hossa would have had just a good a chance as winning with the Pens as he would of with the Wings. Fleury is better than Osgood and you have to think the Malkin and Crosby will get better after going to the cup finals.
Hossa won’t put up nearly the same numbers with the Wings as he would have with the Pens.
Now that the Rangers let Avery go to Dallas, I think Jagr goes back to the Rangers. I know he loves Mario, but I don’t see it happening.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
pittsburgh has to bring in two of naslund/husselius(sp)/jagr
if dupuis is on the first line there is no way they win the division next year. and i really think letting ruutu walk is a huge mistake. just unfathomably sloppy shit from shero here. craig patrick level bad.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Lou Lamoriello must be copying off of their paper. Actually saw yesterday where NJ signed BOTH Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik. Can Chico Resch be far behind?
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Doesn’t Carrott Top get some hot pieces of ass?
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
dude carrot top is freaking jacked, its creepy
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
No, Hossa won’t approach the kind of stats he would have put up had he stayed here. If he really wanted to set himself up for next year’s free agency period, he would have been far better off to play on Crosby’s line for another season.
I agree that Jagr more than likely ends up back in NYC. Please.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Go back in the time machine and bring back Kevin Stevens, Ron Francis and Larry Murphy. Leave Tom Barrasso and Ulf Samuelsson behind though.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
i dont blame hossa, its a great move from all angles and hes going to get paid unless he gets crippled. next year he most likely does have a better shot winning a cup with detroit, so he wasnt lying about the winner stuff. five years from now hed have a better shot with the pens but he wants it now, cannot knock that.
plus i would much rather have him in the west than on the rangers or devils, i mean shit thats not even close.
im just worried that it makes the pens look really bad. they have lost half of their forwards, and have brought in a fucking awful enforcer. thats it. running out of people to bring in at this point.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm
moleman – You’re blaming Shero because Tampa chose to overpay a second-line winger (Malone) and Hossa lost his mind and settled for an idiotic one-year deal? You at least have to give him credit for tying up Malkin. The Pens have the two best forwards and the best goalie. That’s not an awful nucleus. And, they still have cap room to bring in more players. The past couple of days have sucked, but they are still in position to be a Stanley Cup team.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
The Wings are an old team. Certainly not a lock for a Cup by any stretch.
/still very bitter
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
i dont blame anyone but malone for malone, personally i think hes a joke so i dont care.
but not being willing to sign ruutu to a three year deal and bringing in godard instead? thats fucking retarded. and adam hall taking what looks like less money to play for the worst team in the league last year when he would have been the pens fourth line center just makes it seem like something is wrong
maybe its not shero, maybe all the rumors about players hating therrien are true. but something is amiss when six of your twelve forwards walk
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Ulf would be awesome right about now. Kjell, on the other hand…
I can’t say I want Jagr in Pittsburgh, but at this point it’s either him or some kid from Wilkes-Barre. If the Pens want a top 6 forward, they’re going to have to trade either Whitney or Staal because there isn’t one on the market right now.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
That guy looks like he should be chewing foliage.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
also, there is no way fleury is the best goalie in the league. maybe someday, but not right now. yes i am glad the nucleus is still great, thats not going to change. what i am worried about is literally not having enough players to field the top two lines without calling up wilkesbarre players. you cant give sid pascal dupuis and tyler kennedy and expect him to be happy about it. theres still time, but if they dont bring in two top six forwards soon things do not look good
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:21 pm
WHAT THE FUCK SHERO
ruutu is definitely worth that.
im sorry, this is not good at all
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
How can we possibly make up for the 6 goals we just lost with Ruutu leaving?
The sky is falling.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
ruutu offers a lot more than goals. i was hoping theyd keep him around as the enforcer and drop laraque, but losing both i wasnt prepared for. ruutu is right up there with avery as far as getting on people goes, dont underestimate his value.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Laraque was useless. Though the Pens are decidely less diverse without him.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm
godard has 8 points in 200 career games and isnt a great fighter
ruutu could occasionally bust some moves out of his ass, and was great in shootouts.
they have lost their antagonist, their fighter, and probbaly their only hitting defensemen. and added a mid grade fighter. regardless of what they do up top, they are getting softer, which is bad. im sorry, im not putting on rose colored glasses today
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Laraque was of no use – an enforcer that doesn’t enforce. Ruutu is valuable as a pest, but can’t someone from WBS learn how to irritate people for less money?
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
The Pens could still get Huselius, who is a top-6 forward
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I’m not going to get agitated about losing Ruutu or Laraque. Dime a dozen players.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
No matter what spin Shero and the Pens try to put on it, they will be a lesser team come training camp than they were before July 1st. Whether they sign Naslund or Jagr or whoever, they lost a top 6 forward who was their only presence in front of the net on PPs, their only physical defenseman, one of the top 10 wingers in the NHL, a valuable pest/energy guy, and a solid backup goaltender.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
oh dont get me wrong i dont like laraque, hes a great fighter but offers nothing else (diversity and community involvement aside) but godard is a downgrade if thats even possible. but for the sake of argument lets say thats a wash.
but losing ruutu and possibly orpik matters, you cant go from three ‘tough’ guys to one and not expect to see an impact. honestly i wouldnt be shocked to see bertuzzi come in for ruutu, which would suck because man i dont like that guy.
being soft wont kill you in the east, but if you get to the finals it will.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm
We knew they couldn’t keep that roster intact. But, they still have most of the parts they need to get to the Finals. And, I’m assuming Ray Shero is actively working the phones to fill the remaining holes. Signing Malkin was somewhat unexpected and, obviously, very positive. All is not lost.
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:59 pm
we knew they couldnt keep all the big money people, but one of the big reason crosby was willing to take a discount was so that they could keep the role players around.
all is not lost i agree, they still have the best three young centers in the league and the best young goalie. they have a young star in the making in letang, a vet in gonchar, and if whitney returns to his 2006 form an excellent puck moving defensemen. i know they will bring people in to play the wings (well i dont know that, but im hoping) and sid and malkin will prop them up big time. but losing hossa, malone, and orpik, all three, is a big blow. the conventional wisdom was you could pick one to stay. i really think they are going to regret not ponying up for orpik.
gonchar – cant hit
whitney – huggably soft
letang – too small to hit, but tries
eaton – shot blocker, not a hitter
gil, scuderi – PK studs but not hitters
sydor – cut
you have to have someone who can hit. and they arent bringing in any defensemen in free agency to replace orpik if he leaves. maybe ruutu is a dime a dozen player, but a defensemen who can hit in open ice hard enough to kill a guy is a valuable commodity in the league.
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Guys like Ruutu give teams more than stats. I wish GMs would see this. That’s why as a Ranger fan I can’t belive Sather let Avery walk over 1.5 mil. When Jagr was struggling big time last year, people weren’t getting on him because Avery’s crzy antics helped take some focus off Jagr.
Even in the playoffs everyone focused on Avery and not Jagr. That had to have helped them last year.
For an extra 1.5 mil, Ruutu and Avery are worth it.
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
bingo. ottawa gets it apparently.
ruutu wouldnt stop fucking with jagr in that series, it was classic, and as fragile as jagr’s psyche is thats a big thing to do.
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:07 pm
In case you didn’t catch this amusing Gawker article about Avery.
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
holy shit melichar got a million dollar deal?
SUCKS TO BE A CANES FAN
wait there arent canes fans they didnt win the cup this year
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Wow, the Wings just replaced Dallas Drake with freakin’ Hossa. Unbelievable. Even if this is a one year rental, watch out. Franzen was already developing as another potent scorer to supplement Zetterberg and Datsyuk. And now Hossa.
The Hockey Gods clearly love the Red Wings.
July 2nd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
damn, orpik for six years at 22.5. great move, but theres gotta be a move in the mix because thats too man d-men
gonchar, whitney, letang, orpik, eaton, scuderi, sydor, gil
July 2nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Wow, they landed Orpik after all. And it seems for less money than was offered by other teams. A VERY pleasant surprise.
Sydor will get bought out. Maybe Whitney gets traded for a top line forward. If Redden is getting 6 yrs/39 million and Mark Streit gets 4/20, Whitney is suddenly a bargain to other teams.
July 2nd, 2008 at 5:36 pm
i know they will bring people in to play the wings (well i dont know that, but im hoping) and sid and malkin will prop them up big time.
Didn’t Lemieux turn Dan Quinn and Rob Brown into 100 point and 40 goal scorers? Ok, saying Crosby and Malkin is in the same league with the best player ever is a stretch, but I’m still a Pens fan that’s happy with this year’s Cup run and optimistic for the future.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Bless your heart for trying, TBL, but it’s Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings, to hockey fans.
