ESPN and A-Rod Aren’t All Bad
Baseball, ESPN, Video July 2nd. 2008, 12:50pm
Anyone who has watched SportsCenter this week knows that it’s My Wish week. You know this because Chris Connelly is trying to make you cry every morning when you’re eating your Cheerios. (What? Just me?)
So with that in mind, I’m bring you this story of John Challis and A-Rod. Challis, a cancer patient, was featured in a SportsCenter story about a month ago. (His video is below the jump.) A-Rod, as you know has been in the news lately as being linked to a married pop star.
Challis met the Yankees last week in Pittsburgh. When Challis’ father called the Yankees this week to tell them John would be in town to see Yankee Stadium, the Yankees offered their third baseman to chauffeur.
The ride to the Stadium took 25 minutes. Rodriguez played the part of tour guide perfectly. John mentioned Central Park and A-Rod talked about how much his family loves to go there. Rodriguez then picked up a plastic bag on the console and said, “This is my lunch. I always take my lunch to the ballpark. I’ve got to get a new bag, though.”He told John how the ride to Yankee Stadium was something he looked forward to every day. It gives him time to think about that day’s pitcher, to focus, to prepare. A-Rod and John talked about a lot of things, baseball, traffic, music, New York and family.
I don’t think I’m out of line when I say that we sports fans, as a collective, are a little jaded by today’s athletes. And while some may question A-Rod’s motives in this situation because of the timing and need for some good publicity, I think it’s important to remember that none of that probably matters to John Challis or his family. John and his family have been through hell and kept their heads up.
Hopefully, more athletes and teams continue to get involved with kids like John, because they do have a positive experience in their lives. Simply put, kids like John deserve it. Even if it does mean my Cheerios taste a bit more teary.

I gotta admit, I’m a sucker for this sort of stuff. Although the Kobe one a couple years ago was a little too…transparent.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
HA you eat cheerios
/Eats Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
That I Wish song they play is god awful.
Otherwise those are nice segments.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Ha you eat breakfast.
\Only eat breakfast on Fridays when I get my Steak, Egg and Cheese Bagel from McDonalds.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I don’t go in for human interest stories. I’d rather hear something about how A-Rod had donated half of his exorbitant salary to cancer research than hear that he drove around with some kid for a few hours.
Or hell, he could always do both.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:57 pm
@cbh49er
I don’t eat McDonald’s anymore, but their breafast burrito was good
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Wow, a sincere post. I like it. Good job, CRM.

I liked the Indians one. Very nice what they did
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Who saw the Teddy Bruschi one? That was a tear-jerker.
Ha. Sounds interesting …
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:00 pm
if a-rod really is banging that nasty bitch madonna, he REALLY needs some serious counseling. that’s sick man, especially given the talent he could pull.
i thought madonna was an ugly-assed tramp 20 years ago.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Outside of banging shemales and choking in the playoffs, ARod isn’t such a bad guy.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:01 pm
I’ll take these segments over bad news stories any day. You make the essential point, TBL… it doesn’t matter what the athlete’s motivation is (and I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt), it means so much to the kids and their families.
Oh, and when I first watched the segment on John on SportsCenter my 8 year old daughter asked, “Daddy, why are you crying because of a TV show?” oh well…
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Yeah I liked that one too, Irish
I’ve never even heard of the Steak, egg and cheese bagel before. Then again I haven’t been to McDonalds in probably 2 years.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:02 pm
412, you forgot cheating on the field. Knocking the ball away against the Red Sox like a girl, shouting when the ball was in the air against the Blue Jays.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:03 pm
You make the essential point, TBL…
Sorry, CRM – gave TBL credit for the sensitive insight.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:05 pm
xv43 – I completely agree. Athletes (especially those making A-Roddish money) should be expected to do more.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:07 pm
I agree, essentially, with what NSR said which is that (paraphrasing) Kobe is a ginormous piece of human garbage.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Yelling at Toronto is cheating? If Cap’n Jetes does that, he’s the biggest gamer on the planet.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
The best thing Pacman Jones could do right now is start a charity and give away some money. Same for Shawn Chacon. Any athlete in trouble should do it. Even though people are going to say “He’s only doing it because of this…” It’s still going to look good and end up helping someone.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I’ve never been a big fan of the My Wish segments. I like the premise and the exposure put on the athletes that says “Hey, these guys aren’t rich, stuck-up jerks.” And it’s tremendous to see these kids smile. But ESPN and SC cheese the heck out of it with Chris Connelly’s stoic tone, the downtrodden music that makes Coldplay sound like heavy metal, and the overall production of it. Maybe I’m trying to sound like Tommy Toughnuts here, but I;ve just tuned out to so much ESPN and SC are doing now that I simply change the channel. Maybe I should give it a chance.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
A-Rod donated almost $4 million to the U. It is helping to renovate the stadium and baseball facilities. A Rod did sign a letter of intent to play there. He also was recruited to play QB for the U
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
CRM – You want Pacman to make it rain on Make a Wish?
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
No Nick, it would be cheating no matter who did it. I hate the Yankees, I don’t like any of there players.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
I don’t think we should “expect” them to do anything. It’s their money, they earned it and they have every right to do with it what they want. It’s all on their conscience whether they choose to do good works with their provisions.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I cry every morning while eating my cheerios anyway, but it’s for reasons other than Chris Connelly’s efforts.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:12 pm
You know my dad?
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:12 pm
ARod’s a good guy:

July 2nd, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Whoa, whoa, whoa — let’s not get too crazy now.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Every night Cuz emails me and tells me how much he cried at the segments. Then I start crying because my Blog Hero is a wuss.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:14 pm
See Arod has just got it all backwards. If he started Choking shemales and banging in the playoffs he would be beloved.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:14 pm
i’m not a big fan of this sort of thing being shoved in your face during sports center, but there’s no doubt that its a good situation for these kids to participate in. i thought that the one that the steelers did for the kid in the wheel chair was bogus. but the one that the indians did with sizemore and martinez was the right way to do it, letting the kid participate like a real player. the one a-rod did was done well too. overall its espn trying to get people to think they have a soft side when all they are after is ratings (if that even effects it), but you are 100% right the end result is probably the best thing for these kids and their families.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Until I take it all way with taxes!
/Obama sporting devilish grin
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:15 pm
That makes me laugh.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Shut up, Gonzo!
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Said by a TBL commenter? Wow…
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:19 pm
CRM is your blog hero, Gonzo? Way to shoot for the stars.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:21 pm
The My Wish stuff is a complete ratings ploy by ESPN. Otherwise, they would do it during football and basketball seasons too, basically all year round, instead of when baseball is the only sport in season. It’s great for the kids and families; that’s why the segments can be such tear-jerkers. But the cheesyness that ESPN adds to it takes away from the purpose of charity, which is to focus on those that are in need of charity. Alot of athletes and sports franchises do charitable work and Make-a-Wish-type stuff often, but the fact that ESPN only highlights it during the slow sports season is annoying and dirty.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:21 pm
oh yeah…

July 2nd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I know it’s hard to believe, but ESPN is a business. Ratings = money.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
ESPN is the devil.

July 2nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
fret not, Nicky P. I’m still around, just in a different phase.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Thank you Mike, you know that makes them a smart business, not evil.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
But he rose again, nick. Looks like you chose wisely.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Every Television show in the history of the world is a ratings business. Let’s not think ESPN is the only guilty party here.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Absolutely! Tax the living hell out of him! The only reason anyone earns less than A-Rod is because that person must be “less fortunate.” It’s not like A-Rod earned the money with hard work or anything!
/Insert random liberal here
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm
If you want to be mad at ESPN for something then be mad about them showing Wipeout highlights during the Top 10 plays. Now that is shameless
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Guess that’s more than we can say for some blog heroes *cough* Jesus *cough*
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:27 pm
These things have always gotten to me, especially one a couple of years back on turkey day that fox did about our soldiers with Summerall voicing. and since i’ve had my first chikd a few years back, any time i hear “Chris Connell has more…” i turn the tv off.
having kids makes you a big pussy.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
412 — I believe there are now five of “us” here on TBL now.
We’re taking over!
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
I didn’t say it was stupid or wrong, just dirty. The focus is not to boost charity, it’s to boost ratings and retain a demographic that may not be a typical ESPN viewer. Therefore, dirty yet successful.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Gimmeabeerman, that was beautiful.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
J2B, no. It makes you a big a pussy.

that ones just too easy

July 2nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I like the My Wish segements it’s the only time my daughter will watch SportsCenter with me
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
And you know this because …? It can be both at the same, you know. Not everything ESPN does has an evil, “dirty” ulterior motive.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Should I tone it down and stick to more conventional banter?
ESPN sucks!
Would it be more beautiful if I played that “My Wish” song before I started posting?
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Now, now, Nicky P. I met Jesus yeasterday morning and he was pretty cool. Though, He did kick me out of the Pearly Gates due to some unfulfilled obligations here (read: gambling debts He wasn’t about to cover).

That was Mariotti’s “What To Watch Tonight” yesterday on PTI.
Adande went with The Girls Next Door.

No Beerman, that would just make thing wow that song is really gay, and then I woudn’t be able to properly focus on your correct statement.

didn’t realize i was in a room with a bunch of tough guys
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Why would anyone watch Girls Next Door last night when you can watch them play celebrity family feud!
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Wow I’m glad I have been working late. Now I know I definitely did not miss PTI. I missed ATH with half the douche.

@YYSA – You’re right – he did actually recommend Family Feud because of TGND
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
irish, your’e right, but wubba wubba wubba and MTV Sports don’t count because they’re Hall of Famers.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:45 pm
J2B – It’s all schtick. You’re generally not going to find a whole lot of sentiment here. Making cheap jokes about ARod banging Chyna lookalikes makes for better comedy than sentiment.
That being said, yes, having kids does make you a big pussy. This is why Travis Henry had to leave the NFL.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Irish, no love for Alan and Martha(can’t remember their last names)..
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Wonderful. Perhaps the most wonderful comment anyone’s ever left on here. I am given to hyperbole sometimes…

@ everyone…Not sure if anyone bothered to read the actual story, or watch the video. The ride with AROD was not the kids wish. The kid was coming to the game, and the Yankees and AROD jumped at the chance to have him hang out with AROD.
The AROD thing wasn’t a publicity stunt or a ploy to divert attention from Madonna. It was a planned event, and AROD was just doing something nice. The fact that it happened to get written about shows that their is still some good writing being done in this country.
