College Football Grand Larceny: Kirk Ferentz
College Football July 7th. 2008, 1:45pm
Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz (record over the last three years: 19-18) has a salary higher than Ohio State’s Jim Tressel (National title game two years in a row), Mack Brown of Texas (title in 2005), and Mark Richt at Georgia (title this year?). This … something seems wrong about this. Intern Parrish wonders why the heck Ferentz is making so much loot and yet the Hawkeyes aren’t winning jack and the mediocre Big 10. When will the Iowans put pressure on a coach who hasn’t accomplished squat since 2002, and hasn’t won a bowl game since 1/1/2005?
Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Les Miles, Nick Saban, Charlie Weis and Kirk Ferentz. Now, just like Sesame Street taught us, which one (or two in this case) does not belong? Once you take out Charlie Weis and his stupendous contract, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz takes home the award for grand larceny.
All of those coaches, save Ferentz and the Chuckster, have won national titles, yet somehow Ferentz seems to escape the pressure that should accompany his member ship of the $3 million and over club. That’s right kids; Kirk Ferentz makes mo’ chedda’ than Mack Brown, Tommy Tubberville, Rich Rodriguez, Mark Richt and national runner-up Jim Tressel. Not only does Ferentz seem to avoid public scrutiny, the university seems intent on protecting him.
His agent must be worth his weight in gold; maybe floating his name around every season for various new jobs has its payoffs.
In the last three years, Ferentz has led Iowa to a 19-18 record—going 11-13 in the awful Big 10—with its last bowl win coming after the 2004 season. According to Rivals.com, Iowa has finished 6th in the Big 10 (38th nationally) in recruiting rankings from 2002-2008—slightly better than Wisconsin, Michigan State and Purdue—yet all three have performed better on the field.
Wisconsin and Illinois seem to have improved in the last five years, whereas Iowa looks as though it is heading to the back of the pack. In a time when the Big 10 may be at its weakest, Iowa has fallen far too hard for its coach to earn as much as Ferentz does.
In some ways, I feel for Iowa. The university felt it had an amazing coach who could come in and channel Hayden Fry and bring Iowa to the promise land. Instead, they have a decent coach who won the Big 10 twice and then cashed out. Also, Ferentz did not exactly weave through a gauntlet to get to the top of the Big 10. Iowa played only two top-25 teams in the regular season in which it co-shared* the Big 10 title and missed playing No. 1 Ohio State in conference. Way to go Big 10. Later that year, the Hawkeyes were bitch slapped by to USC in their lone BCS appearance.
You have to believe that one is worth what one is paid, but it sure seems as though Ferentz is stealing money. Iowa is struggling while the Big 10 is at its worst and it appears to me that if Ferentz does not win this season, those in charge may need to reevaluate their program.

He did have 3 straight years of 10+ wins when he got that contract. I’m not making excuses for him but they’ve had some key injuries the past few years and when you’re Iowa you don’t have a lot of depth. Considering the obstacles they have to overcome in recruiting you have to give him a little leeway.
Besides, this is the North, we love college football but our lives don’t revolve around it. Iowans understands they aren’t going to win the conference year in year out. People in Arkansas and Alabama could learn a thing or two from this patience.

This post is alternatively titled: I hate the big 10 and am going to say how bad it is in four separate paragraphs of my seven paragraph entry.
July 7th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
My guess would be his 31-7 record from 2002-2004.
Still, that he makes more than Tressel is pretty crazy.
July 7th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
he doesnt even give his players bullet-proof vests, vodka, or SUVs.

Beating Minnesota makes you a saint in Iowa.
On a serious note, though, Ferentz was making hay when he was recruiting against a Mizzou that couldn’t recruit, an Illinois that couldn’t recruit, and a Notre Dame that couldn’t recruit. Now that those things have changed, and Iowa’s been sliding.

@ Coop…
People in Arkansas and Alabama (and elsewhere in the South) do not recognize the word patientce when it comes to CFB. As is evident by every radio and news station in SC giving the kickoff countdown (52 days)until the the season begins with SC vs NC State.
It is our opinion that the BIG 10 should continue to suck, and when the dumbasses up there decide to stop holding the playoff system hostage to call us, until then see you in January when an SEC team kicks the shit out of OSU again.

I was not wondering why he was making so much as I was wondering when he will feel the heat that someone making that much should. This was also not a big 10 hit job but a piece on Iowa alone.
July 7th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
The heat may be coming … but you have to realize that most Iowa fans realize that the Hawks aren’t capable of a top 10 recruiting class every year. So, it’s up to the coaches to coach up a group of second-tier talent. Like most of the other Big Ten (11) teams that are not Michigan or Ohio State, it becomes a matter of things clicking in to place to have a successful season. Don’t forget that the last bowl win was against LSU, and that some bad reffing cost the Hawks a realistic shot at beating Florida in 2006. By paying to keep Ferentz in Iowa City, the university at least feels they have a talented coaching staff.

However, WhiteSpeedReceiver is correct, Kirk could go 2-10 as long as those two wins are Iowa State and Minnesota.
July 7th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
really?
July 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
i wasn’t aware he was pulling more than tressel. that is very surprising.
July 7th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
The Big 10 may suck, but not nearly as bad as TBl’s server.
July 7th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Kids go to Iowa to wrestle.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Super, I was trying to not make this SEC vs B10 (which is more tired than Lebron > Kobe). I’m just saying its nice to see a second tier team realize that they are a second tier team and not get all worked up and fire a perfectly good coach after a rough patch. Iowa could hire Vince Lombardi and still not sustain 10 win seasons year in year out.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
At least Fulmer got another raise. Maybe this year our two biggest rivals will only put up 75 points on us. Go vols!!!
July 7th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Sports-related things that suck as badly (or worse) than TBL’s server:
1. Pittsburgh Pirates
2. Cleveland Indians
3. Oakland Raiders
4. Atlanta Falcons
5. Ohio State’s national title attempts
July 7th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
1-2 aint bad sportsgal
July 7th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
A.C. Slater to Iowa to wrestle.

It’s a great time to try to break into the top tier of the Big Ten, with Michigan making a terrible coaching hire (for Michigan). Of course, that doesn’t help anybody that doesn’t want to make that jump. Only Michigan State and Illinois look like they’re trying to improve.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
I’m not an Iowa fan, so I’m really enjoying watching the Hawkeyes suck up the football field! I hope Ferentz stays.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
WhiteSpeed…OSU is trying to improve as well, only nationally, not in respect to the b10, that mountain has been conquered.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
So Arkansas fans are supposed to be happy and have patience with a mediocre coach who has a decent year once every 4 or 5 years? Really? I am not naive enough to think that we will be a national title contender year in and year out, but to say that we didn’t have patience with a coach that had the longest tenure in a BCS conference without going to a BCS bowl is a bit of a reach. And it’s not like we got rid of a shitty coach and got a even shittier one to replace him, we made a definite step up IMO.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Ferentz was the hottest commodity in coaching when he signed his contract. He had NFL teams coming after him. He hasn’t had a great last few years, but he’s still generally accepted as doing the most with the least amount of incoming talent. It’s hard to get big time recruits to go to Iowa. They have also had a lot of injuries.
Also, Michigan (my alma-mater) bitch-slapped Tebow in their bowl game last year. No SEC team was intelligent enough to figure out to just blitz him constantly to take away the run and force him to make quick throws.
July 7th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
how did this become a big 10 - SEC debate? Tyduffy, settle down. Florida got thumped but I doubt it had anything to do with intelligence or lack thereof. Also, Ferentz is responsible for getting talent to Iowa. So the excuse of not enough talent doesn’t hold water. And everyone gas injuries so that is another bogus excuse.
July 7th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I don’t think there was enough Big Ten bashing in that post.
He hasn’t earned his pay the last 3 years, that’s for sure. But at a school like Iowa, you can’t expect 10 wins every year. I think he earned his pay during the 2002-2004 seasons and a certain amount of patience and good will accompanies that at a place like Iowa.
July 7th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
he’s the best O-line coach in college football. say what you will, the Iowa O-line is usually top notch, insanely well coached and runs some of the most complex blocking assignments in college football.
then again, that’s worthless without talent (just don’t tell Charlie Weis).
July 7th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
In Iowa, there are 2 sports. Hawkeye football and Hawkeye wrestling. People in Iowa expect a Big 10 championship every year. Every year they think their Hawks are the greatest team in the world. Iowa is big in wrestling, but football has a bigger fan base. Iowa finished in the Top 10 three consecutive years. Then Ferentz stopped recruiting. Also, how do you recruit against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. Now, add Notre Dame and Illinois in the picture and it’s tough picking.
Did he deserve the contract, yes. Does he now? No. The Hawks had 3 great years, people jumped on the bandwagon and now they are just realizing they aren’t that good. I lived there for 6 years and had such a blast rooting against them. Go to Hawkeyenation.com and you can see how much Black & Gold kool-aid they drink. Probably the stupidest fans in the Big 10.
July 7th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Glad you left Mozzatta! Get a clue. Hope you moved to Ohio. Really, there is a bigger fan base for football than wrestling? I’m shocked. There’s also a bigger fan base for Iowa basketball. The only claim wrestling has is that it’s what their best at.
PurdueMatt is right, it’s just not realistic to expect 10 wins every year. It happened a couple times, and the cycle is coming back around where it will again. When was the last time a major conference football team had open tryouts for RB mid-season? That’s what Iowa had to do in 2006. Quarterback play has been erratic as well. That being said, Ferentz has turned out quite a bit of NFL talent, so it’s obvious the talent is there. It just hasn’t hit all at the same time.
It’s not that they think they always have the best team, it’s that the Hawks are all Iowa has. And no Cyclones, Iowa State doesn’t count.
July 7th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
is it necessary to form a list? miami’s going through a down cycle, but many others …
July 7th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
more important, how do you recruit to iowa? at least michigan, ohio state, penn state, notre dame and illinois, if they are not located in picturesque areas (penn state) they are located close to major cities (close = two hours away).
iowa city is close to… the quad cities.
July 7th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
People have got to let go of the “how can you get talent to Iowa” argument. That is his job people. He is paid $3.03 MILLION each year to get talent. If he cannot do so then Iowa should pay someone have as much and get the same result.
