Rumor or BS: Tracy McGrady to the Pistons?
NBA July 11th. 2008, 10:50am
After striking out with Carmelo Anthony, could Joe Dumars really want to pursue perenial first-round playoff loser (and one of our favorite players in the league) Tracy McGrady? That’s the claim of Metro, a tiny Canadian outlet, and it’s slowly gaining traction in Michigan.
Ordinarily, we’d dismiss this as poppycock … but the way Dumars has aggressively looked to nuke the Pistons, we’re not so sure.

Tracy McGrady = Most overrated player in the NBA
July 11th, 2008 at 10:52 am
could be a good deal, depending on who is involved in the deal.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Sure, if they want Jemele Hill to liken them to the KKK.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Detroit is still the best team in their division. But i think this is a rumor. Just like the Melo bs
July 11th, 2008 at 10:53 am
How about both?
This sounds like a Florio item. Can’t they at least speculate who Detroit is willing to give up.
OT: TBL, you having a little trouble activating?
July 11th, 2008 at 10:54 am
The Rockets need to blow things up, McGrady and Yao don’t mix well enough to win in the West
July 11th, 2008 at 10:55 am
/nods head slowly
July 11th, 2008 at 10:55 am
not. going. to. happen.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Poppycock? How about “balderdash”?
July 11th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I might have a good night, depending on what I do tonight.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:58 am
yes, mike. that is what im going through. what sucks is that the rest of the country is slowly starting the morning, and their AT&T stores will be flooded as well. i wish i had been in the first batch – the 8 am, EST starters. they got their shit activated. by 915, shit was clogged
ps – the first people in line at the store i got mine from were there at 2 am. unreal.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:59 am
If it is true, him and prince on the court at the same time could be fun to watch.
@cbh – how is he overrated? he catches almost all the flack for first round bounces and he doesn’t try to point the finger at anyone. the only people who hype him give him a ton of shit for first round losses.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:59 am
They would prob have to give up Rip or Tayshaun
July 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Every team McGrady has played for, he’s ruined. Magic never had a chance and the Rockets never will either. There’s no way, regardless of who would be involved in some sort of trade, that this deal would work out well for the Pistons.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am
TBL, did you hop in the Mazada and get down there by 6? how long did it take you there? i might try to go around 7 or 8 and check see how busy they are.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am
He’s overrated because people think he is a superstar when he isn’t. McGrady sucks.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Metro looked for comment from T-Mac, but he was unable to be reached at Camp Chen-a-wanda
July 11th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Magic never had a chance
Doc Rivers was coaching. He sucks. Cant put the blame on T Mac all the time
July 11th, 2008 at 11:02 am
How the hell is it his fault the rockets fail, yao gets hurt and it mcgrady’s fault. The team relies on alston as a PG. He did not ruin the rockets. I am a magic fan and I can tell you he didn’t ruin the magic. Having a $90M contract for 10 fucking years for a guy that never played killed the magic. Losing shaq killed the magic.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:04 am
He sucks. Seriously. If you are comparing him to kobe and lebron then maybe you are right, but seriously, Jameer Nelson sucks. Rafer Alston sucks. Ben Wallace sucks. Corey Maggette sucks. Brian Scalabrini sucks.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Sandi, I am sorry if he is your boyfriend but I don’t like the guy. He runs his mouth then get’s made to look like an ass. I have no respect for the guy.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:07 am
From what I heard when I went back home, Chauncey and Rasheed are going to be gone. I don’t think anyone will miss them either. The fans are really sick of the laziness, the lack of effort and the undeserved sense of entitlement the past few seasons.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:08 am
T-Mac is like a pre-Celtics KG. You put him in a similar situation and he’d be certified too
July 11th, 2008 at 11:08 am
When you are the supposed “best” player on your team and your team fails to ever get past the first round, damn right you deserve some blame. Just ask Kobe, when the Lakers fail he get’s all the blame. McGrady has been the best player on his teams, and he hasn’t been able to carry them past the first round.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Chauncey, Rasheed, Yao, Scola, pu-pu platter of undersized scorers … nope. Rockets still suck
July 11th, 2008 at 11:10 am
The fans are really sick of the laziness, the lack of effort
damn Detroit fans. The Pistons have been to 6 conference finals in a row. you should be lucky
July 11th, 2008 at 11:10 am
I don’t even get to watch him that much. You are saying that a guy who could start for every team in the NBA sucks. Did he say something about your mom, or your sister. Seriously, guys guarantee wins or say stupid shit all the time. Doesn’t mean they suck at what they do. Except for Jameer Nelson, cuz he really does suck at what he does, worst PG in the league.
Much different to call a guy an asshole than to say he’s a shitty basketball player.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Jesus Christ, the Yankees suck, the Cowboys suck, aren’t you a fan? That isn’t to be taken literally.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:12 am
worst PG in the league.
he is not the worst point guard in the league. I could name off 10 players but im too lazy right now
July 11th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Tracy McGrady is an asshole and a good, not great basketball player. Happy?
July 11th, 2008 at 11:14 am
T-Mac could get out of the first round if goes East. I would give up Rasheed, Teyshaun and draft pick.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Remember back in the day where he was neck to neck with Kobe as the next Jordan? That was fun
July 11th, 2008 at 11:14 am
The Rockets are not making this deal. Not going to happen.
If they want to dump T-Mac’s salary – they wait until trade deadline or next year (still 2 years to go).
At *most* this is Daryl Morey’s way of testing the true market value for Tracy McGrady. The Pistons would have to give up a lot to get him. And they’d have to take Luther Head or Rafer…
July 11th, 2008 at 11:15 am
So kobe sucked for all those years?
July 11th, 2008 at 11:16 am
The Pistons could be good next year if they can make this deal, depending on who they give up and if they continue to win 50-60 games.
/I wanted in on it too
July 11th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Yeah … sucked like a fox
July 11th, 2008 at 11:16 am
The thing is, I’m not sure how good any of the Det guys would be on other teams. They sort of all play well together and fit what they do in Det well, but I don’t think any of them (sheed used to be) are great players. I’m not saying they become Ben Wallace when they leave, but I think on another team rip/chauncy/prince wouldn’t be as good.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:18 am
I think McGrady would fit very well with Detroit. He likes the slower paced games because of his injury issues. I wouldn’t trade Billups though. If you have McGrady, you better have a clutch shooter for close games
July 11th, 2008 at 11:19 am
If anyone wants to further debate this, I just started McGradyorLebron.com LebronOrMcGrady.com and KobeAndMcGradyButNotLebron.com
July 11th, 2008 at 11:21 am
@cbh – i agree with that
@irish – ok, when you decide not to be lazy, you’re going to have to get me a list, cuz I can’t think of one single starting PG that is worse than Nelson. Probably should have qualified my first statement with that starter bit. There are probably some backups worse than him. You know I’m a magic fan, and I wish he were better.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Chris Duhon TJ ford
Kirk Heinrich Jammal Tinsley
Stephon Marbury Earl Watson
Delonte West Jarret Jack
Raymond Felton Beno Udrih
July 11th, 2008 at 11:31 am
+â—˜ to Rexy
July 11th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Oh man, who the fuck are all those guys? +1
The Magic were actually talking to Duhon, that would be some funny shit if he came in and outplayed Nelson.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:33 am
They need a backup PG. White Chocolate is looking into coming to Orlando. He used to play for SVG and with Hedo
July 11th, 2008 at 11:35 am
White Chocolate is good (8 years ago)
July 11th, 2008 at 11:37 am
if i had to pick 5 stone cold scorers , regardless of position..T-MAC would be in that 5. The guy is a GREAT offensive player.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Also. Jameer Nelson is a pretty good point guard… except when he plays againts detroit.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:39 am
I didn’t see much stone cold scoring from him in the playoffs. I kept noticing him disappearing for long stretches.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Best player in the Orlando summer league is…Mario Chalmers.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Duhon would’ve started ahead of Nelson easily. Orlando doesn’t have much of a night scene, right? Because that’s the only way Duhon wouldn’t have started instead of Nelson…Nelson is a shoot first pg that is a tremendous defensive liability.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:42 am
He averaged 27 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists against Utah! Scoring 40 in Game 6! Come on man
July 11th, 2008 at 11:43 am
I hate him, so I was probably noticing him playing poorly.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Nelson is a shoot first pg that is a tremendous defensive liability.
tallguy reveals he’s actually Jay Bilas
July 11th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Duhon went to hell, I mean the Knicks.
“guy is a GREAT offensive player”, in February, in half empty arenas, against crappy teams, when games don’t matter.
/couldn’t help myself
July 11th, 2008 at 11:49 am
i didnt say clutch. i said he is a top 5 scorer. he can shoot from just about anywhere with ease. when healthy , he is really hard to stop. I wouldnt put the blame on him for whatever happens in the playoffs. With the magic and rockets, his supporting cast never really gave him a hand.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:57 am
they got their shit activated. by 915, shit was clogged
Get thee some Colon Blow.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Trac-eeee MA MA MA MA GRAY DEE
July 11th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
He ruins teams because he’s overrated. GMs, fans and coaches lobby to get the guy because he’s perceived as this elite basketball phenom, when in actuality he’s an overly-talked-about, given-too-much-credit hack. Yeah he gets his points and is fun to watch, but teams mortgage their futures to get him, can’t afford to surround him with a supporting cast and then fall in the first round of the playoffs every year as a result.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I say T-Mac is on the same tier as Paul Pierce guy. Franchise guy who isn’t quite up there with the very best of them
July 11th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Best player in the Orlando summer league is…Mario Chalmers.
Brook Lopez has been good as well
July 11th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
First, I need to make the argument that Yao is the Rockets best player, not T-mac. I’m not sure I believe it, but that’s what Rockets brass has been pushing the last off season or two, and McGrady has towed the company line saying “It’s Yao’s team.” In any case, I would bet a lot of money that I don’t have that McGrady doesn’t get traded. I can think of about maybe 5 players worth trading him for. But you don’t trade him for a post player (Dwight Howard, Greg Oden etc.) because of Yao. Seriously, who do you take other than Kobe or Lebron for T-Mac? Or what combo gets you T-Mac out of Houston? I just don’t see it.
And while he may have his faults (and I would acknowledge all of them), he does not suck. Sucky players can’t do this.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
No way is it Yao’s team. McGrady’s the main man in Houston. If you compare the records with each of them out of the lineup its no question. I’d definitely include a lot more players than Lebron and Kobe, ie. Chris Paul, Carmelo, D-Wade, Brandon Roy even, and maybe even Durant.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Brandon Roy even, and maybe even Durant.
that is funny
July 11th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
So someone’s not going to trade McGrady for Dwight because Yao is there?
That’s insanity.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Irish if you compare Roy’s stats with McGrady this season, they were pretty similar, with the slight edge to Roy. Durant is kind of a reach, I know
July 11th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I can’t believe TBL took this seriously…
McGrady is 29… a very old 29 for NBA purposes… with a bad back. He never gets “serious” injuries – always non-surgical injuries that appear every January/February. And he’s never proven to be clutch.
Why the hell would Dumars trade for him. That would be the “lateral” move he’s trying to avoid.
The worst part is that I really do want to like T-Mac. He’s easily a top 5 offensive player in the league and has passing skills matched only by LeBron (i.e., able to see over the defense from everywhere on the court). He just turns into Shaq and blames everyone for everything when things aren’t going well.
That said: the year Yao and T-Mac are healthy is the year they shock everyone and make a deep run in the playoffs. That will be 2009.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
@ Ruck: The only thing is, we can entertain a T-Mac trade discussion. You know for a fact that there is no way they would ever trade Yao. I’m saying for no one, I’m talking Lebron, Kobe, CP3 anyone (again, I’m not saying I wouldn’t make the deal, but Houston will not). I think that fact says a lot, that T-Mac has tradeability (new word) but Yao does not because Yao will never be traded.
Also, forgive my miscalculation of CP3 and D-Wade. Complete brain fart on my part, how dare I. They wanted to Draft Roy when they took Rudy Gay and traded him for Battier, but it wasn’t in the cards. No way they would trade T-Mac for Roy. . . then again, Portland does have the parts to make something work. Roy and a SF & PG (since no one on that team has a big contract, you need to do this to make the numbers work) and some picks swapping hands(since Portland has 33 picks ever draft) and there could be a *potential* deal. I still wouldn’t hold my breath for it.
I think Carmelo-T-Mac trade would result in a fan uprising from all Rockets fans. I would hate that trade. They are basically the same player, but T-Mac does better (not great) on D and rebounds and passes better.
Durant is still to young. Plus it would not make sense for OKC to take on T-Mac; they are clearly building around KD.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Very valid points Rocket. I think Yao doesn’t get traded for the simple fact that he brings in the China markets for Houston. I like McGrady, and I was very disappointed when I read that players in the league voted him as the softest player
July 11th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Here me out Nick
I know that Sampson/Oljuwon and Duncan/Robinson were great as Twin Towers. But I just don’t see how it works in the “new” NBA. It’s a guards league, and you can have 2 GREAT post players like that, but how do you stop running teams like New Orleans? Every team would just run us up and down the court. Plus there would be no pieces around the two post players because they would eat up so much of your cap that you would not have very good players around them.
That’s all I’m trying to say. If you still think I’m off my rocker, please explain a bit, just so I can see the error in my ways.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
GrungeDave: I’m with you. No way does T-Mac get traded for anything short of LeBron. Plus, it sounds like Boy Genius Morey wants to add a #3 part rather than “blow it up.”
July 11th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
@Ruck: I was at Yao/Yi 2 in Milwaukee. My wife bought me court side tickets for my birthday. She had the funniest line (she’s Korean).
“Wow. I never thought I would be in the majority anywhere in Wisconsin. What’s it like being in the minority you stupid caucasian?”
