If you thought good sportsmanship was dead, you’ve never been to a summer high school touch-football tournament in Florida.

The 7-on-7 game between two of South Florida’s top high school football teams ended with a fight yesterday. Miami’s Booker T. Washington beat Pahokee High 22-21 on a last second touchdown and 2-point conversion. From there, tempers quickly flared.

From the Palm Beach Post:

“After the final play, a Washington player threw a Pahokee player to the ground,” said Len Kosmalski, a Nike sales representative who was knocked on his back while trying to separate players in the melee at Miramar Regional Park.

“I don’t know if (Pahokee) was coming over because of that or because of the loss of the game … but it exploded after that.”

I’ve long been a major proponent of the handshake line. I think this solidifies my position. Naturally, both teams are blaming each other. Here’s the absolute high light from the story:

Near the end of the altercation, Washington junior Quentin Dunbar left his teammates and returned with a metal pole. His coaches quickly stopped him and took it away.

That’s just awesome. Nothing is over until Quentin Dunbar and his metal pole saying it’s over! I suggest you look at the pictures from the Palm Beach Post. I love how pictures 2-5 act as time-lapse photography that show one player punching an opponent in the top of the head as he’s trapped under two teammates and a coach. You stay classy, South Florida High School football players.
