We’re going to go with no. It certainly hasn’t helped the ACC that Bobby Bowden and Florida State are going through a down cycle. Ditto for the Miami Hurricanes. Not even Virginia Tech has been able to recapture its 1995-2001 form. Of note: BCS record in bowl games for the ACC the last three years: 0-3. All-time, the ACC is 1-9, the Big East 6-4.

Since losing three teams to the ACC, the Big East, surprisingly, has prospered: South Florida is on the verge of becoming a ‘program,’ Connecticut has made an incredibly smooth transition from I-AA, and except for last season, Louisville appears to be on the rise.

We’re not making the argument that Big East football is on par with the ACC (though the chasm ain’t that wide right now). We’re just saying that the ACC’s raid (call it an “expansion” is a joke) was supposed to make the conference markedly better on the field, and it hasn’t (revenue may be another story).

Discuss.
