Favre’s Fave Five Includes Two Vikings Coaches*
NFL July 23rd. 2008, 11:45am
UPDATE: Some of the pay-wall quotes after the jump.
In what appears to be a brainlock of epic proportions, Brett Favre was using his team-issued cell phone to chat with Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and coach Brad Childress, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. There’s no link because it’s tucked behind a pay wall. Worth noting: Pro Football Talk had this last week.
Was Favre deliberately trying to get caught to send a message, or did he just make a staggeringly foolish mistake? The Vikings, it appears, are screwed – not only have their certainly lost Favre, but there’s no telling of Goodell will yank a draft pick and/or fine them. And you’ve got to wonder if anyone in the NFL feels shittier this morning than Minny’s QB, Tarvaris Jackson. Poor guy.
From the aforementioned Journal-Sentinel:
The Packers think less now of Favre as a person but also think he has been advised poorly by James “Bus†Cook, the lawyer from Hattiesburg, Miss., who has been his agent from the beginning.
For the time being, they’re just going to sit on Favre until he seeks reinstatement from Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Complicating the matter is the Packers’ tampering charge against the Minnesota Vikings for what appears to be an amateurish mistake by Team Favre-Cook. One source said Favre had continued to use his Packers-issued cell phone. When the Packers checked his phone log, there were repeated calls to coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.
Then Favre had the gall to complain on national television last week that the more time passes the harder it will be for him to get situated with another team. Hey, Brett, if you would have had your house in order before the 8th of July, the Packers could have been working on a deal for months.
As long as Cook is calling the shots, the Packers aren’t going to give him permission to seek a trade. For Favre, they want a third-round draft choice and something else, preferably a player, and a source said one proposed deal with Baltimore already has been rejected by the Ravens.
Besides the Ravens, the list of teams with possible interest in Favre includes the Chiefs, Bills, Dolphins and Jets from the AFC and the Panthers, Buccaneers, Falcons, Redskins, Vikings, Bears and Lions from the NFC.
Unless several teams enter the bidding, the Packers probably won’t get what they’re seeking because clubs will expect Favre to be released.
If Favre shows up, the Packers must give him a uniform. Rodgers, however, will be No. 1.

TBL, what’s the name of the pay wall article?
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:48 am
favre has turned into roger clemens, sans Congress.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:48 am
The Vikings NEVER had Favre in the first place. There never was a time that the Packers would ever let him go to another NFC North Team.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:50 am
Mike, no idea. it shows the article for a second and then goes to the pay screen.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:50 am
TMQs 105,000 word column shaming the Vikings and calling them evil in 5..4..3..2..
This is monumentally stupid on the Vikes part. But if they lose a 1st rounder, at least they wont have the cap hit of taking on a rookies salary.

Minny’s QB, Tarvaris Jackson
Is calling this man a “QB” some kind of running joke that I am not aware of? Did you not see him play last year?
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:51 am

Aaron Rodgers will feel shittier the rest of the season.

Hopefully Tavaris Jackson realizes that there’s probably only 5-7 qb’s in the league that aren’t expendable for Farve (Manning, Brady, Palmer, Roethlisberger, McNabb, Brees, Hasselback) so he shouldn’t feel too bad.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:53 am
hell, even mcnabb is expendable at this point.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:54 am
If Favre is the one making the calls to the Vikings, why are they going to get in trouble for tampering? At least if we get a first rounder pulled that just means one less worthless WR drafted in the first round.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:54 am
I agree with CBH. Was going to say the same thing but he beat me to it
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:55 am
Losing a 1st-round pick is bad, but all things considered, it’s probably better to have it stripped due to tampering than to lose it by going over the time limit at the draft.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:56 am
Agreed arkbadger. As long as the Vikings weren’t stupid enough to call him back they should be alright.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:56 am
This should work. Halfway down.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:58 am
Were they phone calls or were they text messages? If they were phone calls, why not say they were discussing the weather? People from Wisconsin and Minnesota love to talk about the weather.
July 23rd, 2008 at 11:58 am
RMN, actually, the Vikings were crazy like a fox in that deal…they still got the player they wanted, but dropped 2 (3?) slots in what they had to pay him. I remember the player’s agent was spouting off about how he was still going to get the initial draft slot money for his player, until it was pointed out that he also represented the player that took the vike’s player’s slot.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Can someone explain to me this “tampering” rule? I don’t understand how the Vikings could get in trouble for these phone calls. If the guy’s still retired and was the one making contact, why does it matter who he calls? And why the fuck are players getting team cell phones?
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
How long after a guy is traded does a team have to wait to trade him again?
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Excellent point Sportsgal, I was wondering the same thing, he was retired, he should have been able to talk to whoever he pleased.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Hey Miz..you forgot to mention Peyton Manning to that list as well..he is pretty good too.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 pm
He mentioned Manning, I’m sure he didn’t mean Eli.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Mak..I am pretty sure that the Super Bowl MVP would not be replaced by a choking has been
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Man, how long has it been since Peyton won a Superbowl? If the Colts offered a trade straight up Manning for Manning. It would be done.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm
The washed up has been referees to the asshammer that is trying to get out of his contract and retirement in Green Bay…not the older brother of the Super Bowl MVP…last I check all three of those guys had the same amount of rings
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm
referees = refers….fuck spellcheck
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Yes, but only two of them are hall of fame QB’s.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Quit making this about you, Roman! This is about Brett Favre, damn it!
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:33 pm
SG..everything is about me…and Mak..the guy has played 4 years won a Division Title,a Super Bowl and made straight 3 playoff appearances it it still way to early to judge. Brett Favre wasn’t Brett Favre out of the shoot either.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 pm
That’s nothing. You should see what CRM sent Hef from his TBL-issued cellphone.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 pm
OK Brett, here is your new cell phone, we already programmed Coach McCarthy’s number as speed dial #1. If you get into trouble, dial 9-1-1. Remember this is for emergency’s only, and no texting your friends.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Although Favre is retired, he still has a contract with the Packers for the next 2 years. That makes him their bitch.

@miz
For the current Favre, he wouldn’t be replaceable for nearly as many teams. Add Cleveland, Denver, Dallas, Giants, Tennessee, San Diego, and St. Louis to your list as well. There might be a couple of more on that list as well, but its off the top of my head.
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Tampa is still looking good for Favor
July 23rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Rex, that’s one of the funniest thing I’ve ever seen
July 23rd, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I guess when Favre told the Packers to let him worry about his own legacy, he meant to let him flush his legacy right down the crapper.
July 23rd, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I heard Brett’s calls were intercepted by a league official.
