Media News & Notes
Media Gossip/Musings July 28th. 2008, 1:30pm
Somewhat amazingly, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s still in the mix to own the Chicago Cubs. It seems as if he’s a finalist, perhaps even the leader. We are of the opinion that this would be tremendous. Oh, look: Wrigley had a spectacular financial quarter!
The Dallas Morning News and Providence Journal will be cutting significant jobs. From the sports angle, one has to wonder if either paper will have much room to cut, considering these papers cover two of the most popular teams in all of sports, the Cowboys and Red Sox. (DMN)
As jobs are cut throughout the journalism industry, what becomes of diversity? (USA Today)
Red Lasso was shuttered Friday. Major, major bummer.
Another vote against the overcrowded NFL on NBC Sunday night booth. (NY Daily News)
Vindication for Sam Farmer of the LA Times. For a guy halfway across the country to beat the small Army at ESPN, Peter King, the fawning Green Bay press corps and Jay Glazer … impressive. (SI)
Minus Kimbo Slice, the second CBS MMA effort lost about half of its viewers. No surprise there. (Fanhouse)
What corporate behemoth has snagged Sunday Morning QB? Congrats, kids. (SMQB)

Um, what?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Didn’t I read on here a few months ago that MLB would never let someone like Cuban own a team? I think it was one of the interviews with a reporter.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
BTW, read further down in the SI piece about Charles Barkley and helping out a kid.
Sir Chuck is always full of bluster, but he at least has heart in the right place.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Less coverage of the Red Sox is good for America.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
all the DMN’s cowboys guys are top-notch…there’s no way they can get rid of any of them.
just stop covering the rangers, nobody gives a shit about them anyways.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I can’t believe Red Lasso lasted as long as it did.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
+Â¥ spencer…
July 28th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
No mention of the turbulent new internet personality who has recently begun to write for a major sports blog? I think his name is Bill.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Why?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
I already miss RedLasso. I wept yesterday when I saw it was dismantled. Though all of their videos still work, ones taken before the site was shut…which is nice.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Why
Umm, because they were breaking every copyright law known to man?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I can’t believe Red Lasso lasted as long as it did.
Why?
For Old media (and thusly, the law… see: Youtube), that’s stealing of the highest order; they want to be able to control how their footage is used.
Maybe one day it’ll change, but it seems pretty obviously illegal today.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
You Tube?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
RedLasso never gave me a login despite numerous requests – thus, Fuck RedLasso. Glad it’s gone.
/Sorry for your loss, Gonzo.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Didn’t Google buy YouTube and then get the copyrights? I could be completely wrong.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
You Tube has content yanked CONSTANTLY at the order of the major networks, and youtube does it because they have to… Youtube is still open because of its user-uploaded content, which Red Lasso didn’t have.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Um, TBL why did you mention Wrigley when talking about the Cubs? Except for the name on the ballpark, the Wrigleys haven’t had anything to do with the Cubs in 27 years.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
So basically, they’d rather have nobody use their footage?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Yeah, it was a non-sequitor, just felt like it
July 28th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I think if Cuban puts up a big league bid, he will get the Cubs…Tribune is too big a company to let Bud Selig decide it’s ownership…If Bud had the inside track, his guy would still be in the hunt and he was already cut
July 28th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
So basically, they’d rather have nobody use their footage?
Only people with their. I’m sure they think one day people will go to espn.com to see ESPN clips, and nbc.com to see NBC clips, thus they get advertising revenue.
It’s an out-dated mod of thinking, but massive companies move slowly, i guess.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
august, you seem to know a lot about it. why did Red Lasso have certain networks and not have others? Clearly they were authorized to have the ones they did. my question, if they were getting the content unauthorized, why didn’t they have more networks?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Only people with their consent.
fixed
July 28th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
now that Wrigley was bought by Mars, do the Wrigley’s have anything to do with Wrigley anymore?
July 28th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
redtube >>> red lasso
July 28th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
TBL…they would rather use the footage for them selves…Fox, NBC, mLB, NFL and others put up their shows on their own sites

To tell you the truth, I never studied their situation in-depth enough to figure out what kind of rights they actually had. The best I could guess was that they just stayed away from the companies that actively went after others… It really did seem inevitable that they’d run afoul of copyright laws pretty soon no matter who authorized them to use the content.

the DMN has a much bigger problem than the journal. in texas, football is religion, not just the cowboys. true, the journal has other concerns than the red sox too but i’m not sure it has to worry about college sports as well (college sports in new england is almost an afterthought).
the DMN has UT football, A&M, baylor, texas tech, smu and tcu to cover not to mention high school football. the DMN probably could get away with covering high school football with stringers and bumping up prep reporters to fill the vacancies of college beat writers who (possibly) are bought out. but the DMN couldn’t get away with dropping college football.
then again, the tampa tribune is doing just that in a football-mad state so maybe i’m wrong.
the journal has no such problem covering colleges as the DMN.

I don’t mind going directly to a network’s site to watch content, what bugs me is when a network demands content they don’t have up be taken down.
It’s one of the reasons I try to get everyone to watch stuff on Hulu… if they can prove the model is successful, hopefully there’ll be more like it out there.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
That’s true, but he can still make a bid. I’m not sure how the baseball owners get involved with a vote since it doesn’t seem like they should have any say over a business proposition. But in general, the MLB owners are MUCH more conservative than NBA owners. Reinsdorf will petition to have the sale blocked if Cuban ends up being the top bidder.

Good Reads on Red Lasso’s situation : here, here and here
It looks like Red Lasso was trying to beg for forgiveness rather than ask for permission, hoping that their popularity and tremendous reach would convince the big networks that this was valuable advertising/awareness for their programs (and it was).
July 28th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
ooo, yen…how exotic.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
when i went there a week or two ago, there wasn’t a helluva lot to choose from. either that or its search/content organization was all f’ed up.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Owners get involved because they have to approve new ownership of a team. That article lays out some interesting points if you have time to read it.
Basically it sounds like the old fogeys would do everything in their power to block Cuban, but the rest of the owners might be blinded by the dollar signs of a bid above $1 billion.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
they have a big say. reinsdorf absolutely loathes cuban and he has enough owners in his corner (and his puppet selig) to block any potential sale to cuban.
if anything, letting cuban be a finalist drives up the price of the team, which raises the value of all the other owners’ teams.
in short, they are using cuban as a pawn to inflate their teams’ worth.
July 28th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
When did the Red Sox overtake the Yanks in popularity?
July 28th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
The owners can block Cuban, this is true. They won’t if he’s the high bidder, because I can assure you Congress will take note, and make inquiries, mentioning the anti-trust exemption MLB has. The exemption is the single most important asset of the MLB, and anything that might jeopardize it will be dealt with.

Jimmy, I guess it depends on what kind of shows you’re looking for… I’m able to watch pretty much all of the shows I want to watch on Hulu, so I don’t bother with television.
And I love that they have a good assortment of shows that were canceled, like Arrested Development or Firefly.

I only used Red Lasso like once or twice. I’m disappointed.
