The Roundup: Kenny Chesney’s NFL Practice
Baseball, Blogging, ESPN, Kind of Gay, Media Gossip/Musings, NFL, Olympics, Other College Sports August 12th. 2008, 8:00am
Is this vintage Penelope Cruz, or just a black and white picture? … don’t let the slowing foreclosures fool you … Yao’s knee to Melo’s groin … google, now producing content! … Kenny Chesney’s second chance with the Saints …
To ensure a perfect start to the Olympics, a cute kid lip-synced “Ode to the Motherland” because the girl who actually sang it was deemed “not suitable” (read: not good-looking enough). (Houston Chronicle)
Steve Young’s priceless (worthless?) advice for Aaron Rodgers: “He needs to play good football.” (Sports Daily)
Athletes who retire are wise to get into marketing. (NY Times)
In-depth look at the Adam Dunn-to-Arizona deal. (Snake Pit)
The Browns have their own code of conduct. (Dave Burba Revolution)
This is awfully nice: Sports bloggers can win Best Buy gift certificates. (Press Row)
“Jeremy Shockey obviously has no use for his New Jersey home, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, now that he’s been dealt to New Orleans. And so he has loaned it to Joba Chamberlain.” (MMQB)
For the ladies? Nebraska wrestlers, naked. (Deadspin)
The Post-Standard has Jim Boeheim blogging for them; if the paper comes down hard on Boeheim during hoops season, will he say, ‘but I blogged for you guys!’ (Post-Standard)
When was this photo of Peter Gammons taken, 1979? (Can’t Stop the Bleeding)
The whole “live” vs. “not really live” NBC Olympics business. (NYT)
Mosley, hustlin’: Donovan McNabb is bullish on the Eagles. (NFC East Blog)
Neat: Both of Bobby Engram’s – broken shoulder, out 6-8 weeks – backups are from Auburn! (Seattle Times)
Actual headline: “Two Jews and a black man help Phelps fulfill dream.” (Sports Point)
Presented without comment: “So Monday morning I taxied out to the National Aquatics Center — the building that looks like a wave in a box — to check out this kid. On the way over, my driver stopped in traffic, yanked on his emergency brake and, no joke, began to trim his nose hairs with tiny scissors. Really. Once finished, he pulled off the brake and continued on.” (Free Press)

I miss Adam from Milwaukee already.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Who is Adam from Milwaukee?
August 12th, 2008 at 8:25 am
TBL – Did you catch any of the mens gymnastics last night. Best bronze medal ever. I don’t even like the olympics, especially this years, but these guys, down their two best gymnasts, killed it.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:28 am
I feel asleep watching the Men’s gymnastics. I had some funny dreams…

Negative. Won my first game of online Madden (36-35 on a 2-point conversion with :02 left), watched Gossip Girl, did some reading and went to bed.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:30 am
i miss marty’s shirt too
seriously, what a sad time to be a cincinnati sports fan. we havent had a good team in awhile
August 12th, 2008 at 8:32 am
when has it ever not been a sad time to be a cincinnati sports fan?
August 12th, 2008 at 8:32 am
winning online in madden was always cool, especially when nobody was cheating.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:36 am
TBL, are you picking up Madden 09 today? I’m getting it on the way home from work.
My wife realized that she missed the last 5 episodes of Gossip Girl. Apparently the torrent I downloaded only had the first 13 and not the last 5 episodes from the spring. Her excitement was worrisome.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Angola is awful. USA up 14 in the 2nd. NBC online has the game if you are at work
August 12th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Mitch Albom is a weirdo.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:39 am
sandibals-
oh i dont know. big red machine. late 80’s early 90’s. its been a LONG while though
August 12th, 2008 at 8:39 am
I’m sorry, wasn’t Boomer Esiason a Bengal? Sounds like the bee’s knees to me.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Watch it, CRM.
No Boomer bashing. Ever.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:42 am
@irish – I’m depending on you guys to essentially live-blog the game. I can’t watch anything online here at work so keep me updated, bro.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Did you reserve a copy? I did – but at a store far away. Can you pick up your reserve copy from any store? Or does it have to be the one you reserved it at?
August 12th, 2008 at 8:44 am
sorry, wasn’t trying to pick on cincy fans. you could say the same for KC, Cleveland, Cardinals (nfl), Lions, Vikings. Did I miss any?
August 12th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Here’s your live blog mizer. LeBron = Amazing. Dwight = Unstoppable. Kobe = 0-5. US = Rolling to gold.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:44 am
55-37 at the half
August 12th, 2008 at 8:44 am
@NickP: We can attack him and hide the body. I don’t know where he lives, but I’m sure we’ll find him at the next big UFC event.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Love the whole reserve system for video games now. No waiting in line. Just show up and go home. Picking up my copy on the way home.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Who’s your team Sandi?
August 12th, 2008 at 8:46 am
shit. just called the store. gotta go out there.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:46 am
KC
August 12th, 2008 at 8:46 am
I didn’t bother reserving, I was so upset with the quality of last years game I wasn’t sure if I was actually going to buy it again. Of course once Maddenoliday rolls around I have the itch.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:47 am
zero interest in the Angola game. GREECE game will be another story.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:48 am
wanna play online tonight? like at 8? I assume the buttons will be the same. I must warn you – i’m not very good. I have ditched the Chargers because Rivers isn’t a great passer. I tried the Cowboys and I like their arsenal.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Don’t worry TBL – as long as I don’t have to do anything, I’ll mind the store while you’re out picking up your video game. Get yourself some ice cream while you’re out too.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:48 am
I’ve been in a major depression for a long time, and I’m blaming KC. It’s like I’ve picked the worst team, with the worst GM, worst owner, worst coach and most puss puss RB ever. It’s like one big let down after another. And then there’s the Royals. I don’t even have to explain.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:50 am
Ahhhhhhh SHIT!
August 12th, 2008 at 8:51 am
It’s ok sandibalz. We’ve always got the Wizards, and Tbones.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Sorry TBL, I bought a real console. No online b/n PS3 and the 360.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:53 am
@Maggs – I’ve got a Pargo post I’ve been saving for just such an occasion.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:56 am
you should never have a problem getting a copy of madden on the first day going to KMART.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:58 am
My PS3 just sits in the corner of my room taunting me. I have no money for a t.v. Awesome! Before you ask, the PS3 was a gift…
August 12th, 2008 at 8:58 am
GREECE game will be another story
they held Dirk to 13 points on 3/8 shooting beating Germany 87-64
August 12th, 2008 at 8:59 am
yeah, but they only have it for Sega Saturn.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:59 am
I see the Violet Palmer memorial female ref position has been adopted by FIBA.
August 12th, 2008 at 8:59 am
@CRM
Followed by a Malrins post, a salty snack foods post and the PM Round-up? Sounds lame…
August 12th, 2008 at 9:00 am
@Irish – does your stream not have commentary? I was planning on listening to the commentary like radio (work to be done!) but all I hear is the occasional “Oh Shit!!” from a player and the squeak of their shoes.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:01 am
@CRM
Also, your Pargo post better have the “Literally Eating Dick” tag.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:01 am
August 12th, 2008 at 9:03 am
I just started watching at the half, but the US looks awful/disjointed on offense. Only up 14.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:03 am
the announcer just said that Kidd is a very good 3 point shooter…..
August 12th, 2008 at 9:03 am
@sterlin- long time no see. I am just reading it. I cant listen to it right now at work
August 12th, 2008 at 9:05 am
yeah, dont bother – no commentary so unless you can actually watch it and still work on your comp (dual screens) you are shut out. Pretty lame NBC.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:13 am
72-48 USA
August 12th, 2008 at 9:21 am
a cute kid lip-synced “Ode to the Motherland†because the girl who actually sang it was deemed “not suitableâ€
The stpry is that it’s because she had buck teeth, and that would play into a pretty common/detestable asian stereotype from the 30s-50s (think Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s)… it’s more understandable than the idea that she wasn’t cute enough.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:22 am
team usa really needs to shoot better from 3 and from the FT line. Has Kobe hit a 3 yet this tourney? At least the 3pt defense is better this game.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:23 am
USA up 30, 83-53
August 12th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Has Kobe hit a 3 yet this tourney
yes
August 12th, 2008 at 9:27 am
He is 0/8 today from 3
August 12th, 2008 at 9:28 am
@SM- China game, he was 1/7.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:30 am
1/15, best shooter alive.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:32 am
best shooter of this or any other generation.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:34 am
He is hurt by the smaller slicker ball…Boozer is a great rebounder but guards will continue to drive the paint when he is down low.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:38 am
this has been said before, but Ill say it again. It seems obvious that Lebron is the best overall player in the world when you watch in this format. Not trying to start a war, just saying.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Do they make Madden 09 for N64?
August 12th, 2008 at 9:41 am
97-67 USA game over
@blazers- just saying, that is your own opinion
August 12th, 2008 at 9:42 am
97-76 USA
August 12th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Irish, are there more games? That feed was great.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:45 am
argentina vs australia next
August 12th, 2008 at 9:45 am
And Lebron James 2/5 for the FT line is not too impressive. (He is the best player in the world period, not just this format)
August 12th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Just switched over to the Iceland Germany handball game. Seriously, I may do no work at all today.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:47 am
Wow, China took spain to OT, you watch any of that one? Spain was done most of the game with big comeback in the 4th
August 12th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Roeth, what channel is handball on?
August 12th, 2008 at 9:51 am
no traveling in Handball?
August 12th, 2008 at 9:54 am
I think the rules say you get three steps but the announcers for the game I watched saturday said the refs are very liberal with the three steps rule.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:54 am
@coop- look at the left of the screen. you can see what sports are live. pick handball
August 12th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Coop – on NBC online. It’s in the “live” listing.
Irish – you get 3 steps in Handball. (Not joking – we spent 1 quarter every year in HS gym playing/learning handball).
August 12th, 2008 at 9:56 am
what is this the NBA?
August 12th, 2008 at 9:57 am
The German coach looks like someone who should have been in Beerfest
August 12th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Iceland with the 2-man advantage
August 12th, 2008 at 10:00 am
yeah, they need to take away the yellow border and start enforcing traveling. other than that, this game is sick
August 12th, 2008 at 10:01 am
1st time watching handball…agree with everyone exciting stuff rooting for Iceland over here
August 12th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Who volunteers to be the goalie for this? Seriously, a mini-soccer ball rocketed at you at 50-60 mph from about 20 feet. Not fun.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:03 am
that penalty shot was too easy
August 12th, 2008 at 10:04 am
that penalty stuff is crazy! goalie stands like 5 feet from the guy
August 12th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Does anyone here actually understand the rules to handball?
August 12th, 2008 at 10:30 am
The rules are pretty much the same as the early days of UFC. No biting, no eye gouging, and no fish hooking. Other than that, anything goes.
August 12th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Since I have such limited interest in the Olympics this year I could care less when NBC shows things, I tune in watch for 10 minutes and move on.
