The Marvin Gaye USA Basketball Commercial
NBA, Olympics August 10th. 2008, 12:00pmI’ll admit it – I’m starting to really enjoy the Olympics. I didn’t think it would happen. I blame handball. Anyway, go ahead and get your patriotism on.
USA! USA! USA!

I don’t understand people who hate the Olympics. How can you not like cheering on athletes from your country?

That commercial could warm even Magglio’s heart.

sportsgal – It’s cool to hate

Erm, well, they’re overpoliticized, they’re turning into propaganda for a repressive regime this year, they’re all about making money at the top levels, they’re more impure, as far as cheating’s concerned, than a lot of other things, and, oh, they’re never fully about the amateur athletes that deserve the moments in their niche sports; instead of little stories, we’re going to hear about 10,000 hours of Michael Phelps coverage over three weeks.

Also, Sportsgal, discus went out of style 700 years ago. These days, I’m all about extreme discus. Live in the now, sportsgal. Live in the now.

Michael Phelps isn’t an amateur athlete?

When you make a million-plus in endorsements per year, I would say you’ve ceased to be a true amateur.

Yea, I remember reading about it after the ‘04 Olympics. Phelps went to Michigan but wasn’t allowed to swim on the school team due to his endorsements so he was a special student coach there while he was training.

So, the USA(or any country) Basketball team aren’t amateurs? Perish the thought. When did the rules change to allow professionals in the olympics? Didn’t just read a story on how Darrell Green wasn’t allowed to run because he played NFL football?
