Most Important Person in Ohio: OSU QB?
College Football August 13th. 2008, 10:30am
Nice piece this week in ESPN the Mag on the most popular Mexican-American football player ever (?), USC QB Mark Sanchez. (He recently busted a kneecap, but it doesn’t appear too serious.) In the ESPN piece, Sanchez revealed Ohio State coach Jim Tressel’s hard sell on the Buckeyes:
Sanchez remembers Jim Tressel sitting behind his desk in the Buckeyes’ football office, delivering his pitch: “Mark, you know the two most important people in the state of Ohio are the governor and the quarterback for Ohio State.”
Tressel then paused before adding, “And the quarterback for Ohio State is No. 1.”
We get it – every coach gushes about the importance of his program in attempting to lure recruits. But we’re of the opinion that Sweater Vest actually believes this. (No reason, really; we just look at him, and think, ‘this guy looks like he believes this.’ It’s not a knock or an indictment – simply an opinion.) We don’t live in Ohio and we’ve only briefly been through the state, but is there any truth to this statement? What about the Browns? Buckeyes? LeBron? Indians? Grady Sizemore? Brady Quinn?
¡VIVA SANCHEZ! (ESPN the Mag)

I didnt even read this but I just want to say FUCK OHIO STATE. BOOOOOOOOOOO
August 13th, 2008 at 10:35 am
read it, man. the quote is pretty rad
August 13th, 2008 at 10:35 am
I wonder where Tressel ranks Lebron?
August 13th, 2008 at 10:38 am
behind Craig Krenzel, for sure.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:38 am
@TBL
Have you ever been to Columbus? Tressel is probably correct in that these morons think more highly of their football QB than their state representatives. Also, they take baths in BK sinks… so, you know… mouth breathers…
August 13th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Of course he doesn’t believe that.
1. Lebron, or Jesus to the layperson
2. Tressel
850. Governor
August 13th, 2008 at 10:38 am
The article itself was a decent read.I dont think Tressel really believes that crap though its just a recruiting line.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:39 am
i dunno ohio state football is pretty big in ohio—probably second behind the browns
im sure he gives that line to different positions “the 2 most important people are gov and (rb,wr,etc etc) “
August 13th, 2008 at 10:39 am
TBL he better CK has a ring
August 13th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Sadly that is probably true. The pro team support is kind of divided by location. However every meatball loves OSU. Doesn’t matter if you didn’t go to college, or went to Cinci/Kentt/Akron, everyone loves those cheating bastards, I mean EVERYONE. Being from PA I’m used to various levels of PSU support, from loving them, to meh, to dislike. Not he case in this armpit of a state, all buckeye, all the time, from everyone.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:41 am
not so much in the toledo area—that goes mostly to UM
August 13th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Tressel doesnt believe that. For people livin in Ohio, HE is the most important person. Fuck the governor and there isnt any good jobs coming in.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:41 am
mmonast – u from toledo area?
August 13th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Toledo is sort of like the ugly stepdaughter of Ohio, though, so they fit in well with the degenerates in Michigan.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Toledo is the most ghettoest area I have ever lived in.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:44 am
I was going to say something about Mark Sanchez being the most popular Mexican football player and then I realized that I can’t name another Mexican football player.
As for the OSU QB, Sweater Vest is wrong. He’s not the Most Important Person in Ohio. He’s just the Most Beloved or the Most Hated depending on the outcome of the OSU – Michigan game.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:45 am
“Nice piece this week in ESPN the Mag on the most popular Mexican football player ever (?), USC QB Mark Sanchez” TBL
Jim Plunkett and his two Super Bowl rings disagree.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Tressel makes a great pitch. But Mark then thinks why would I want to be the most important person in Ohio.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:48 am
cool rick no—had some friends who went to school up there would visit and all u see is tSUN flags and all that maize and blue shit
and you are right about toledo place is a shithole…its like Detroit’s JV team
August 13th, 2008 at 10:48 am
I saw the words “ESPN”, “USC”, “Most”, “Ever”, and I’m out. Sorry TBL.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:50 am
What about Anthony Munoz?
August 13th, 2008 at 10:50 am
mmonast—-
you dont really think the browns are ahead of OSU in the OHIO pecking order do you??
August 13th, 2008 at 10:51 am
I think a field judge by the name of Terry Porter is Ohio’s most beloved.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:52 am

Jose Calderon is a douchebag

It is a typical cheesy line that Tressel can deliver with sincerity. There really is no truth to it.
No one cares about the governor in Ohio, especially when it was Bob Taft. Ohio State football is easily the most important thing in Columbus. However, the individual players do not seem to be singled out as much. I actually thought Oden and Connelly received more attention that even Troy Smith for the year they were there.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:53 am
“Mouse” McFadden has to be pretty high on that list.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:53 am
blazers–i guess the answer is a little more complicated when i think about it more in Cleveland i would say yes in cincy i would say probably not. Areas in the middle of the state would probably go to OSU so i guess i am wrong. i just know living in the Cleveland area my whole life and being both a browns and buckeye fan i would rather see the browns win a super bowl then the buckeyes win the BCS…my friends and i share that opinion
August 13th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Fair argument. How many illegals were there in this country when he got his ring? multiple that by 4,356 now
August 13th, 2008 at 10:55 am
beat me to the punch.
he also won the heisman trophy.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Come play for Ohio State…We play 1 meaningful game a year and then get trampled by the SEC.
/Sweater Vest

August 13th, 2008 at 10:56 am
The fact that Todd Boeckman is currently the most important person in Ohio actually explains a lot.
(Seriously I’m a tOSU fan and he is the Achilles heel of this team).
August 13th, 2008 at 10:57 am
I agree with mmonast. I grew up in Cleveland and the Browns were always #1 with OSU being a nice diversion for Saturday.
In Central Ohio OSU is clearly #1.
It seemed to me a lot of people in the Cincinnati area were not OSU fans.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:58 am
clown—is that cleveland from family guy? the illinois game dude?
August 13th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Where is Spencer?
@CBH I read that article now I think Spanish people are some of the most ignorat people in the world…next to DIEHARD or Bandwagon Ohio state fans.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:59 am
bitches.
go bucks
August 13th, 2008 at 10:59 am
The Miami of OH QB disagrees. No one pays attention to him however.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Calderon’s quote is just such a bold faced lie, they thought it would be seen as an affectionate gesture!?!?!? Give me a fucking break.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:00 am
@blazers – bullshit flag thrower in the 03 Fiesta Bowl
August 13th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Dennis Kucinich is #1 in Ohio
August 13th, 2008 at 11:01 am
affectionate gesture!?!?!?
Ignorance is bliss my friend thats whats happens when your country shows hardcore porn at 8 pm on their equivelant to Fox.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:02 am
mmonast—that is why I think the buckeyes dominate the state. The pro teams are regional, but mostly everyone roots for the buckeyes.
slcbuckeye–I agree that there arent as many OSU fans down here in cincy, but there are still a TON. There are about 14 houses on my street and 7 or 8 have OSU flags up. Pretty decent number
August 13th, 2008 at 11:03 am
ESPN:USC
Big Lead: Ohio State
Spencer: Creaming his Pants
August 13th, 2008 at 11:04 am
there’s some truth to this.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:05 am
The Spanish team is going to be completely slant-eyed after the US smacks the fuck out of them on the court.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:05 am
We start the college football top 10 later today. OSU isn’t in the top 4.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I like OSU, but it is like a southern school in regards to its fans. Idiots with GEDS will stab somebody over a deragatory remark. My grandpa has an engineering degree from there and loves the school, hence I watch games with him. I didnt go there, therefore there is no reason for me go crazy for them. They are in Ohio, and this state sucks, so I root for them.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:06 am
fooling yourself…but hey, it aint my top 10…4…whatever.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:06 am
August 13th, 2008 at 11:06 am
If your top-10 has any credibility, UGA better not be in it either.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:07 am
TBL you are retarded if they arent in the top 4.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:09 am
TBL had to make room for Nebraska and Notre Dame.
Da da cha!
August 13th, 2008 at 11:09 am
It’s a sales pitch.
In truth, Beanie Wells or James Laurinitis (sp?) are for more important than Todd Boeckmann.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:10 am
TBL I am kind of surprised you even care about college football, most of New York gives a fuck about college football.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:10 am
doesn’t give a fuck.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:10 am
beanie wells could poop in my fridge and i’d keep it there until i found a way to extract and splice his DNA with my children’s.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Spencer, Najeh Davenport is interested.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:12 am
cbh, Nebraska will finish Top 10…of the Big XII.
maybe.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:12 am
cbh…i want big AND fast, not just big. plus, im pretty sure that najeh davenport already pooped in my fridge, i mean he did have a house in cleveland.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:12 am
I love Nebraska Wrestling

TBL
August 13th, 2008 at 11:12 am
TBL, is your preseason top 10 the rankings of the most talented, therefor possibly best teams. Or are you trying to predict how the final top 10 will look, in other words who has the best chance of finishing in the top 10.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:13 am
While some may disagree with PurdueMatt’s economic thoughts, his above OSU analysis cannot be disputed.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:13 am
coop, don’t go all Mandel on us now.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:14 am
At least they will be 3-0, we were talking abotu cupcake schedules yesterday, this is cupcake. Huskers first 3 games this year.
August 30 Western Michigan 7:00 PM ET Tickets
September 6 San Jose State 12:30 PM ET Tickets
September 13 New Mexico State TBA Tickets
August 13th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I like where Coop is taking this.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:16 am
You want cupcake? Check out Texas Tech. As a matter of principle they should be ranked No. 16 even if the begin the year 7-0.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:16 am
beanie wells could poop in my fridge and i’d keep it there until i found a way to extract and splice his DNA with my children’s.
Spence you are so hardcore its gross, If I caught Desmond Howard Pooping in my fridge I would call the police or take a picture of him in the act and send it to TBL.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:17 am
there are 5 teams clearly better than any other…with a possible 6th and 7th.
1-5 in any order: Florida, Georgia (up in the air after the last few weeks), OSU, USC and Oklahoma…
the 6th is possibly Auburn depending on how their offense does, but regardless that D is crazy good.
the 7th is WVU…easy sked, great talent.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:18 am
then again…auburn and WVU play each other…this game is HIGHLY underrated in terms of NC impact. it’s right up there with the cocktail party and OSU/USC.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Beanie Wells is one hit away from being a nobody, just as Pryor is, just as any of these kids playing this sport are. Antonio Bass could have made a difference in this stretch over the last few years, but he had a freak injury. So o$u should feel lucky to be in the position they are in. As i always say, they will come back down to earth, these things are cyclical.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Tampa…im proud to be an Ohioan (tho i want to get the fuck out ASAP).
August 13th, 2008 at 11:19 am
@cbh – I didn’t forget about you. look for my response tomorrow or friday.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Mags…agreed. beanie misses any time against teams that matter and it’ll be a long season…then again, OSU has brandon saine who’s a beast in his own right.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:21 am
I will be waiting with baited breath.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:22 am
/dick joke?
August 13th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Spencer we have to beat LSU and Tenn. first and if we do, assuming WVU takes care of business, that could be one of the biggest Thursday night games ever.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:24 am
well played miz
August 13th, 2008 at 11:25 am
We start the college football top 10 later today. OSU isn’t in the top 4.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:25 am
/prognosticated
August 13th, 2008 at 11:25 am
ritty…that’ll be the ultimate test of the spread and shred because auburn defends it like few others. i only with rich rod were still at WVU because if he was that game would be one for the ages…stewart just doesn’t have the same panache.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:26 am
arg.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Stewart will end everything Coach Rod built up there in West Virginia. He is lucky to have been hired…
August 13th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Yeah and you know who our defensive coordinator is now? We defend well on the outside so I like our chances.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Mags…agreed. what a terrible decision, talk about an “emotional hire.”
August 13th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Well I think it had something to do with the AD at WVU. He couldn’t “control” Rich when Rich kept telling them to pay his assistants what they were worth. Stewart will just say “Heck Gee Golly Ok Boss Gee Golly Heck.” The WVU AD is a clown.
August 13th, 2008 at 11:48 am
yea, he is. but then again, so is dick rod.
/had to get that in there
August 13th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Anthony Munoz is gonna kick your ass if he finds out you said this.
August 13th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
List of NFL players born in Mexico
August 13th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
well, considering the size of the OSU campus, that is a lot of poon-tang to choose from…
