Yardwork: Jason Marquis Seeks Vengeance
Baseball August 14th. 2008, 10:00am
Cubs 10, Braves 2: Geovany Soto homered and had four RBI and Jim Edmonds had a bomb and three RBI to get Jason Marquis his 8th win. Bobby Cox improved his record for career ejections after arguing with Joe West about a delay of game involving the lights, and the Cubs had their first road sweep of a doubleheader since 1992 (they won 8-0 thanks to Rich Harden in game two).
Twins 4, Yankees 2: Delmon Young had a three-run homer and Kevin Slowey gave up a run in six innings. The AP report noted the Yankees’ lineup was missing Derek Jeter, which is kind of funny since his .284, 7-HR season isn’t exactly JETERESQUE. They were still missing it though. Plus all those intangibles.
Red Sox 8, Rangers 4: One night after a 19-17 disaster, Kevin Youkilis had three doubles and prompted a quote from Jason Varitek that made me chuckle: “he’s had a phenomenal offensive year. We’ve known about him as a hitter, but now he’s added some power.€ Yes. That’s like saying “we’ve known about him as a lady’s man, but now he’s getting laid.” Jason Bay and Jed Lowrie each had two RBI as well.
Mets 12, Nats 0: D. Murphy, Fernando Tatis, John Maine, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, and Carlos Beltran all drove in runs in the Mets eight-run 3rd inning. John Maine pitched five scoreless innings followed by Brian Stokes closing it out with four scoreless. The Nationals suck really bad.
Brewers 7, Padres 1: Corey Hart had a bases loaded clearing triple and CC Sabathia “scattered” nine hits while striking out eight and giving up one run. It’s honestly not out of the question to think Sabathia could win the NL Cy Young. Okay, maybe it is, but he’s been downright dominant since moving to the NL.

Chad Johnson is an idiot, but says funny shit.
From ProfFootballTalk.com:
JOHNSON SAYS HE COULD BEAT PHELPS
Posted by Mike Florio on August 14, 2008, 7:32 a.m.
Apparently irritated by the fact that there’s an athlete not named Chad Johnson who’s getting so much attention, the athlete currently named Chad Johnson said Wednesday that he could beat Olympic swimming stud Michael Phelps.
The declaration came Wednesday on ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption, in a segment during which Johnson addressed various topics.
“The problem with Michael Phelps is there’s no competition where he is,†Johnson said. “Now if he came to where I’m from, which is the inner city, Liberty City [in Miami], I was the three-time Charles Hadley Pool champ. . . . I know a couple people who could beat Michael Phelps right now. Seriously, I’m telling you. And I’m one of them.€
It’s unknown whether Johnson would want a head start, like he did when he raced a horse a couple of years ago.
Meanwhile, it’s also unknown whether Johnson was asked about his effort to change his surname to “Ocho Cinco.€ We reported on the bizarre (but, considering the source, understandable) maneuver on Tuesday night.

4 games? 4?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Looks like Matt Laporta, (The Indians prospect for CC), hammered himself a 3 run homer in the Olympic game today.
That dude better be good.

@sandi – I was watching a replay of PTI last night and caught that interview. at one point, johnson got carson palmer to get on camera and started talking about how he’d beat carson up if they got into an argument. then carson put him in a headlock. it was a pretty entertaining interview.

Hef can’t count before 7:30.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:18 am
And regarding Chad Johnson’s assertion: Not to get into racial stereotyping, but there are some dudes in Chad’s home of Liberty City (in Miami) who can for damned sure swim 90 miles in open ocean water, so… it’s still a dumbass-but-funny thing for Chad to say…

85 reminds me of the Iraqi Public Relations guy that basically told the most egregious lies ever nightly on Al-Jazeera.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Go Cubs Go!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:23 am
@August – I thought you knew this, but whenever you feel like you might be straddling the racism line with a comment, just add “/NickP” to the end and all will be ok.

Jeremy Guthrie was great. As I watched the game last night I kept thinking that is the type of starter the Indians could use. Oh they drafted him, paid him a huge signing bonus and traded him because he was out of options before giving him a chance. Nevermind.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Guthrie has been a steal, I just wish the O’s had more than one good starter.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:25 am
chad johnson reminds me of tim wilson’s character Uncle BS. hopefully that link is actually to some Uncle BS audio. it’s blocked here at work, of course.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:25 am
@slc… The options got them on Guthrie. But, to be honest, he was not only terrible in his cup of coffee with the Tribe, but also in the minors. He had lost velocity and his command wasn’t good either. Sometimes, a change of scenery does someone good, which is what I think happened with Jeremy.
But, yes, he sure would look good in a Tribe uni.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Blacks cant swim.
/Nick P.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:31 am
@ Wally – It must have been the same change of scenery that helped Brandon Phillips. I think the Indians gave up on those two way too early, and cannot be convinced otherwise.
Marte has looked terrible as well, but I am sure he will be an effective starting 3b for someone else. Maybe it is something with the Tribe’s major league coaching staff.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:31 am
@August – see what I mean!?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:32 am
@miz: Does that go for me as well?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:34 am
@ miz, no NickP tag for me… no, I’m owning that one because I’m not making fun of shit: those guys who swim from Cuba are more American and patriotic than most people who were born here… they craved freedom so badly they swam 90 miles in the open ocean.
Meanwhile I bitch about a 20 cent variance in gas prices.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:36 am
USA! USA! USA!
August 14th, 2008 at 10:37 am
@slc… Phillips was a mess-up pure and simple. However, he didn’t want to be in Cleveland because he thought he should have been starting at 20. The screw-up was that the Indians gave themselves no options but to basically give him away. Virtually every team does that with someone at some time (The Tribe STOLE Lofton the same way from Houston and with Lee and Sizemore from Montreal). The Indians did it with Phillips.
Marte swings a slow bat. He will never be a good 3B. He does possess a GREAT glove, but absolutely cannot catch up to major league fastballs. If he becomes good somewhere else, I would be SHOCKED.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:40 am
@NickP – d00d, you’re the architect of the “/NickP” racism disclaimer. of course you can use it.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Not quite re: Montreal.
Minaya was in win or go home mode. It was the last year in Montreal, and he said F it. He knew he’d be fired anyway.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Where were Sizemore and Lee playing at the time of the trade for Colon? I thought Sizemore was in A ball. The supposed prize of that trade was Phillips.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:00 am
@slc… You are right the prize was supposed to be Phillips in the Colon deal. When you get 1 prize, you don’t expect to get 2 more prizes! They managed to get Lee when he was in AA and Sizemore when he was in A ball (and 19 years old). I would call that theft in the highest proportions, although point taken that Minaya was in “screw it” mode and didn’t care what happened to the franchise.
