The Roundup: The Rash of NFL Injuries Continues

There’s something about Emmanuelle Chriqui’s disarming smile and sartorial selection that long ago captured our hearts … Anna Farris, photographed from behind … those darn oil speculators! … Barbie fishing pole nets record-setting catfish …
Joltin’ Joe’s hitting streak has nothing on Bolt’s incredible record. That cricket guy’s impressive as hell, too. (Freakonomics)
“Cursed with good looks, the ability to enunciate most words and access to the best parties and sociably acceptable drugs, TV people really believe they’re smarter than everyone else and essential to maintaining the myth of a true democracy.” Damn. (Fox Sports)
Pay no mind to Rutgers-Fresno St. - Rob Stone has just replaced you-know-who on the sideline for the game. (Star Ledger)
76ers GM has a conference call - just for bloggers! (Depressed Fan)
Is FSU hiding something? (Orlando Sentinel via Fark)
Minor League baseball fans: These guys are talking to Nationals first-rounder Aaron Crow this weekend. (Sports Online Radio)
Take a guess who Cris Collinsworth is talking about: “What a brilliant business move for the Jets. … Whatever he does this year will be an upgrade for the Jets at that position.” (USA Today)
If you’re interested in the former Yale basketball player who is dating Luke Wilson, she’s on the far right here. (Philly Mag)
Because a reader is smitten. (Kinga Phillips)
Tom Brady. Peyton Manning. Now Merriman? (Union-Tribune)
Movie plot? Hoops recruit robs bank. (Ballin is a Habit)
We have zero faith this investigation will result in anything. (Times Online)
Because it must be discussed: McCain not knowing how many houses he has. Despite rhetoric you’ll hear on Republican talk radio, this could be John Kerry-Swift Boat huge. Here’s our only problem: “The damning McCain quote … played neatly into Obama’s argument … that he understand the economy better and that the Republican candidate “doesn’t get it” when it comes to voters’ lives.” Two questions that, until answered, will likely have us voting for a third party: Why do you want to bail out fiscally irresponsible Americans who bought more house than they knew they could affrd? Why should taxpayers have to pay for the sins of millions who felt like using their homes as an ATM to live a life they couldn’t afford? Rant over. (Washington Post)

The IOC probe into the gymnasts age is already over. After 12 hours - everything’s cool.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:15 am
McCain didn’t know how many because Cindy McCain has many condominium investment properties. Many of these are inhabited by family members. Contrast this to Obama’s brother living in a shanty in Africa on $1 a month.
Furthermore, if you wish to discuss houses we should talk about how Obama had the help of convicted felon Tony Rezko in buying his mansion for $300,000 under listing during a time when the market was hot. Rezko bought the empty lot next door the same day. What Rezko received in return were many many political favors.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:17 am
McCain doesn’t know how many houses he has. I don’t know how many kids I have running around. Who cares?
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:20 am
The McCain family actually owns at least eight properties. But they’re all owned by his wife, her children and trusts or companies they control.
I love this quote:
“Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?†the McCain camp responded. “Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people cling to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?â€

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:25 am
Emmanuelle Chriqui = only reason I watched entourage
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:28 am
Collinsworth is Favres personal cocksucker.
Why do you keep showing pictures of her, I thought we came to a consensus that she is not hot. Can I please get a little Sarah Shahi action.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 am
I’m aware of all this. But you must pull back and look at how 200 million americans, who see the compelling soundbyte and the quotes and instantly think, ‘WOW, another rich white guy going to the white house.’
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 am

Shady House Deal Plagues Obama
It was conivcted felon Tony Rezko who played a role in helping Obama expand the $1.65 million mansion Obama purchased $300,000 below the list price on Chicago’s South Side in 2005. Rezko’s wife, Rita, coincidentally purchased land adjacent to the Obama’s property on the same day, at the full list price, and later sold a parcel of it to the Obama’s which made the Obama’s yard bigger. Before Obama bought the house he had assisted Rezko in securing millions of tax dollars for housing developments as an Illinois state legislator.
This is just scratching the surface of Obama’s shady relationships in Chicago with guys like Rezko and Bill Ayers.
TBL, have you heard about the coverup of the Annenberg Challenge documents at UIC?
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:31 am
@Tampa-Favre has a few of those.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:32 am

And since this post has a bit of politics, does anyone else think Obama is making a big mistake if he names Biden his VP?

TBL-yeah, he wasn’t an “in-ring” performer. but an announcer who occasionally wrestled.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:33 am
No more bailouts….sorry, people are losing their houses, but nor more taxpayer bailouts. Learn some personal responsibility.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:33 am
It was a gotcha moment. The question F’d McCain. Instead of saying, ‘i dont know, i’ll check with my staff …’ he should have said ‘due to my wife’s court case and the trust, blah, blah …’
Instead, he just had his Dukakis moment - like the time he emerged from that tank and it blew up in his face. (it was dukaksis right?)
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 am
That’s not the kind of man I want running my country. A man who has no control of his own household? Sorry but that seems out of touch with America and American values. I should know since I am an American with traditional values. It seems apparent that Obama’s a real man who control’s his household the way god commands the book of Ephesians.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 am
Evan Bayh in my opinion. And McCain picking Romney would hurt him.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 am
Obama’s not rich?! It’s only ok for liberals to accumulate wealth but not conservatives? The difference is here is that McCain is wealthy and wants to cut taxes so more people can pursue the accumulation of wealth. Obama on the other hand is wealthy but wants to raise taxes so only elite liberals like himself can remain wealthly. Obama lives a certain way and preaches something else. McCain lives a certain way and wants others to do the same.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 am
Yeah God!!

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 am
if one is to believe obama is slipping in the polls (remember, a year ago, no one and i mean no one had obama and/or mccain leading in any poll) this is a good gamble for him. mccain saying that harkens back to george bush 41 when, during the 1992 campaign against bill clinton, marveled at a cashier scanning items at the checkout line.
i use the word “gamble” because, as purduematt points out, mccain can come back with, “well, as least i know none of my houses were financed by a convicted felon.”
it’s a gamble by obama to see if resko sticks. my guess is most people who are considering voting for obama don’t give a damn about resko (i.e. clinton/whitewater).
generally in national elections, he who fires the first shot is always heard; he who fires back is rarely heard.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 am
Why does living in a $1 shanty in Africa make you a bad person? Jesus was homeless, scumbag.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 am
No wait, everyone, let’s hear what Purdue Matt thinks about this…
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 am
No need to hit the bible Hef….just the fact that them man has no idea what his finances are like is damning enough. His wife is running buck wild buying property. I suppose if you have millions in the bank you can go a couple weeks without paying attention to the books, but seriously you at least gotta know how much property you have. Especially since your are fucking running for president.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 am
This is just scratching the surface of Obama’s shady relationships in Chicago with guys like Rezko and Bill Ayers.
Not as shady as 9/11

Getting all those virgins drunk on wine HE created? Pretty convenient, if you ask me.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 am
Just like George Bush cut taxes so that only reg’lar folk could make money. Hell I remember when I got my $300 check from the 2001 tax cuts and then he got his $215,000 check from the same tax cuts. He’s so reg’lar. Just like John McCain.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 am
Kinda on topic. Yesterday, for some reason, Rush Limbaugh was on my radio. I went home to check his wiki, and that fat fuck doesnt even have a college degree. Dont know what to take of that, but if you are to be the spokesperson for an enlightened party I want a BA in Douchebaggery.

McCain picking Romney would help in many ways….
1)Romney’s business experience at Bain & Company and strength on the economy
2)Fund raising
3)Exciting the conservative base
4)Michigan
5)Youth
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:40 am
PurdueMatt hit the nail on the head. I love conservative haters, your logic is so flawed.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:41 am
nothing like political banter to get a friday going.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 am
Two questions that, until answered, will likely have us voting for a third party:
I don’t understand why people insist on throwing their vote away. Until some 3rd party rises to power, vote for one of the existing two parties. If you don’t like the candidate or his/her policies, vote one way because of a VP or some other political tie. It’s just a waste to vote for fucking Nader every 4 years.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 am
It doesn’t. I was showing the difference in the McCain family’s generosity to family as opposed to the Obama’s.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 am
@phat
Oh please do explain…
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 am

Ever think that maybe he is perfectly happy living in a $1 shanty in Africa?
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 am
How about this? Fuck ‘em both for being too fucking wealthy to understand what it’s like to be a normal fucking person that has to actually balance a fucking checkbook and wonder how the fuck they are going to pay all the fucking basic bills that never seem to fucking go down. Fuck ‘em both for losing touch with reality and actually thinking that anyone gives a fucking rats ass about how many fucking homes they have. How about fucking talking about what they are going to do to help get this fucking country back on track and out of this fucking rut that is dragging us down. Fuck ‘em both.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 am
6. It would be further proof that McCain is a sellout and will do anything to get elected.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 am
I don’t understand why people insist on throwing their vote away.
Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 am
7. It would allow John McCain to move away from questions about his old, old, old, old age which would prevent him from serving two terms. Because he’s old.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 am
hold on, i will join the rest of this discussion as soon as i finish adjusting my budget on quicken….
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 am
You should have your vote stripped. You vote for who best represents what you want. Why comprimise your beliefs and values? You would never do that at any othe rtime, but you would do it when voting for your leader. Very interesting…
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 am
8. It would allow McCain to finally get those smiling lessons down. Romney smiles better than any other candidate because he realizes that people don’t care how dumb the things you say are, so long as you’re smiling when you say them.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am
“Fundraising”
McCain could pick Michael Phelps and he still wouldnt outraise Obama.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am
Really? do you actually know the facts about the economic plans for the candidates or are you just spouting out GOP talking points?
Both candidates are weathly, the difference is Obama’s tax cuts favor those making less than $250,000 a year while McCain’s favors those in the top 1% of the country. Obama’s tax plan will give back the person making $40,000 a year $800 while McCains will giv eyou about $30 back.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am
9. McCain likes prunes.

11. Obama has a poor brother who he doesn’t buy mansions for. McCain’s wife (who he didn’t start dating while still married to some cripple, honest) buys houses for each and every member of her family. It helps her forget all the times John has called her a cunt.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:48 am

@Nick P.
That is rediculous. I swear this country is digging it’s own grave by comprimising thier values for “votin’ fer a winner man!” that is so dumb, vote for who most represents you, that is why they are called representatives. It isn’t throwing your vote away because it is your vote and you do what you please with it.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 am
Obama has a poor brother who he doesn’t buy mansions for.
He should get his brother to help him on the campaign like Malibus Most Wanted…Obamas down for the bitches and hoes.

I can’t believe our presidential race has come to who owns more homes and who went to vacation where. I swear I’m moving out of this country, sorry Hef. This isn’t what the framers had in mind “in order to form a more Perfect Union.”
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:52 am
McCain wants to cut taxes for everyone.
Obama wants to raise income taxes, let the Bush tax cuts expire, raise corporate taxes (this affects everyone), raise the capital gains tax, and raise the dividends tax.
The top earners in this country already carry the load with respect to taxes. Obama wants to hammer them even further. This is not the way to grow the economy as these are the small business owners and people who create jobs.

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:56 am
@Maggs: But Rush didn’t want to go to college. Didn’t vibe with his values. Who are you to tell him how he needs to achieve his ‘Merican Dream?

I’m pretty sure it was turned into this debate to blind everyone to the fact that a vote for McCain is a vote for four more years of George W. Bush, and a vote for Obama is a vote for something different than that.
August 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 am
my favorite Sheppard Smith moment was during Hurricane Katrina, when he went up to some guy walking his dog and asked him why he was not inside. the guy told him to “fuck off.” classic.

@Hef
Bless you sir.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 am
Maggs - Most people’s values and beliefs don’t conicide with every value and belief of the candidate they vote for. People vote according for the candidate they believe will rep them the best. I think this year is a great example. I think most people would tell you they are disappointed that these are the best two candidates that this country could produce. After 4+ years of declining approval rating for GW this country and each party should have combed through their masses and found an ace. Instead, we’re stuck with McCain and Obama. However, I think every American can find something they like in one of these two and put their vote to use. And if they can’t, don’t vote, but also don’t complain when the future President signs a bill that they don’t approve of.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 am
Obama’s not rich?! It’s only ok for liberals to accumulate wealth but not conservatives
right because four years ago the conservatives NEVER said a word about Kerry marrying a rich woman. But now mention McCain’s rich ass wife and you get “whats wrong with accumulating wealth” pffffft!
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:01 am
fixed, thanks.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 am

August 22nd, 2008 at 9:03 am
@ill
Neithe rof these men has been president so you don’t know if either is an “ace”. Just because you don’t like how a guy talks or smiles is no reason not to vote for him. But comprimising your belifs and values should never be done, especially when voting for the leader of the free world.

I’ve struggled with the idea of voting for a 3rd party, but I think that most often a vote for a 3rd party candidate is actually a vote for the candidate you would least want to win. Polls showed that a majority of Perot voters in ‘92 would’ve voted for Bush in a two-way race.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:08 am
Because what is going to happen to the economy is so clear.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:08 am
Obama has proposed increases in every major federal tax. He has proposed to increase individual income taxes, with the top rate to rise to almost 40 percent. He has proposed to increase the top capital-gains tax rate by 33 percent. He has proposed the same for the top tax rate on dividends. He has proposed to increase payroll taxes, with a rate increase of 16 percent to 32 percent for workers earning over $250,000 a year. He has proposed to reinstate the death tax (estate tax), now phasing out under current law, with a top rate of 45 percent. He has proposed several increases in corporate taxes, including a so-called windfall-profits tax on oil. Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Mundell has written that if such tax increases are adopted, the U.S. economy will suffer “a deep recession, a nosedive,†and the dollar will decline further.
I got this from my link above.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:10 am
Freakonomics presents examples of correlation and then makes the giant leap to causation. To say that abortions have decreased crime is nothing more than a unproved theory.

I agree with you on that, but I linked up a “two-sides to every story” that both conservatives/liberals hate to hear. There’s evidence of a negative correlation in USA, but a positive correlation in China.

August 22nd, 2008 at 9:25 am
abortions for some, miniature american flags for others!
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 am
RE: the Obama and McCain drivel above: These types of issues shouldn’t distract intelligent voters. Rich people marry poor people, and politicians get slight favors on the regular. Nobody is above it, and if you think they are you’re functionally retarded.
These spats are meant to influence undecided voters who take pride in not understanding the major issues, so they vote on clothes, smiles and other inane criteria.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:27 am
don’t think they would do that TBL. Pretty sure they are showing on USA. They are showing Spain and Lihtuania right now. Announcer just said USA is right after.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:28 am
@Hef
Thanks for that, I was trying for something and I couldn’t quite get it without a personal attack. You seem to have done rather nicely. Kudos to you sir.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:28 am
+1 sparty
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 am
It is sad that this is only like 5% of American voters.
Average American Voter: “Hmmm I like his tie, oh and his hair, he looks so presidential!”
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 am
bad news TBL - schedule for USA says table tennis at 11…but, NBC has basketball scheduled for 10 so maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll show it.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 am
Obama has proposed increases in every major federal tax.
But how will he have time to do that between eating all of our babies and changing the American flag to green?
Most of what is laid out in that link is a complete lie and a major distortion of his tax policy. Keep saying it though… that’ll make it true.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:34 am
Ok, just got through all the comments.
+1 for Clown being on in this thread, +1 Sparty for Keeley.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:35 am
I see an upset happening in this Lith v Spain basketball game. Lithuania will not go away.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:45 am
sand - no way. spain will hold on. strong effort, though
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 am
spain up 5 going to the line with 18 seconds left
i think it’s over
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:52 am
Wil - links to this?
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
Obama lives a certain way and preaches something else. McCain lives a certain way and wants others to do the same.
EPIC FAIL.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 am
so it’s been raining for like 26 straight hours…I am quite tired of rain right now.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 am
Maybe you should do some research on Obama and Tony Rezko before you post nonsense.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 am
makes you wonder why we don’t just implement what bill clinton did. you know, LOWERING NATIONAL DEBT. GWB, meanwhile, tacked on 9.5 billion. and please dont say we’re in a war … that’s just spark 100 comments when you know we shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:55 am
and the only downside of DirecTV? bad weather = no signal
nfl sunday ticket makes it all worth it though
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:57 am
I’m familiar with that story. It’s been in the media for months. That story won’t have nearly the effect of McCain’s house gaffe.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:58 am
how do you comment that something is nonsense without actually telling us why it’s nonsense?
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 am
sure I may say that lebron sucks and kobe sucks and not back it up, but we all know that I am just a hater….telling us to do some research and that something is nonsense requires a little more substance.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 am
TBL - USA basketball on NBC this morning!
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 am
Obama wants to raise income taxes, let the Bush tax cuts expire,
Those are the same thing: Obama’s proposal is to let the tax cuts expire so that the rate goes back to what it was during the Clinton era. Republicans, in an effort to not raise their vocabulary, are calling that a tax hike.
raise corporate taxes (this affects everyone),
True enough, but it may be inevitable when you look at Bush’s spending
raise the capital gains tax, and raise the dividends tax.
I’ll be sure to send my stock broker an apology note.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 am
@sandi - I’m in Jax; raining cats and dogs here. where are you?
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 am
@TBL
the link posted previously covers the basics, http://online.wsj.com/public/article_print/SB121867201724238901.html
Here’s the link to the numbers, McCain would actually give those under $40k an extra $119 per year, Obama nearly $900.
http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/11/news/economy/candidates_taxproposals_tpc/index.htm?postversion=2008061115
bottomline, Obama is giving money back to those who need it while taxing those who can afford it.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 am
Wow, judging by the reaction of the McCain apologists on here, that housing gaffe IS huge. Good call TBL.
They are scrambling.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:03 am
@ miz - sanford (seminole county) I think I’ve gotten like 13″ of rain in the lat 24 hours.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 am

I fucking hate when politicians think we want to hear them talk about shit that’s already happened or we already know has happened. Get the fuck out of here, interrupting my fucking shit so I can hear some shit I already know.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:06 am
bottomline, Obama is giving money back to those who need it while taxing those who can afford it.
What a novel fucking idea. Any response, Drive-byMatt?
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
@sandi - werd.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
@ Trent
But real minds understand that more power lies within the Fed, not some pre-marketed Presidential campaign. I seriously hope the people reading this understand that a lot of the countries problems (Fannie and Freddie) will not be fixed just by a “change we can believe in” or “lowering the tax rates for everyone.” I’m sure you’d agree with me on that one.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
only for a few minutes though…its not as bad as some people make it out to be
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 am
miz - it took me and hour to drive home after work, I only live about 5 miles away, but I couldn’t find a road that wasn’t under 4 feet of water.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 am
Fannie and Freddie
Check this out from Slate yesterday:
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:15 am
a note to ^ article Fannie and Freddie account for about 40% of all home mortgages issued in the US.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:17 am

August 22nd, 2008 at 10:25 am
Everyone who’s political opinion has changed as a result of this exchange, raise your hand. Anyone……..anyone…….. Yep, pretty much what I thought. Both candidates are moving us toward oblivion. The only question is how fast you want to get there?
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:30 am
@Groin-Move to cuba.
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:30 am
I’m voting for Brewster: None of the Above
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:36 am
Punky or Montgomery?
@Tampa Bo, Can’t go to Cuba, too hot. I have what doctors call ‘a little bit of a sweating problem’.
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
You’re right we should probably bail out the lenders instead of Americans who in many cases were taken to the cleaners by unfair or convoluted subprime mortgage schemes. Are you part of the blame Americans first party” Vote for a third party? What like the Female Circumcision party?
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 am
it can also be called… FAT!
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 am
Merriman should lay off the ‘roids if he doesn’t want to be injured all the time.
Seriously, fuck that guy.
August 22nd, 2008 at 11:10 am
I’m shocked. Maggs missed the Tommy Boy reference.
August 22nd, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Intersting bit of news on all these people bailing out of their houses…
You walk away and he bank forecloses, you just might get a 1099 statement of income in January for the “loss” you just took.
Unfortunately, that opens up a whole new problem for those actually paying taxes.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Are you going to mention that Gene Upshaw died.
It seems that this was the biggest news from yesterday, with the labor agreement on the line and all.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Anyone who says Emmanuelle Chriqui isn’t hot is just plain full of shit.
