College Football Top 10: No. 1 Georgia
College Football August 26th. 2008, 12:45pm
Six games against teams currently ranked in the Top 25. Three road games against teams currently ranked in the Top 15. Among ESPN’s cavalcade of “experts,” just one has Georgia winning the title, and that guy, Mark Schlabach, is a noted Georgia homer who spent plenty of time at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and, as the tale goes, lived in Atlanta for a bit while working at the Washington Post.
The brutal schedule, the bevy of suspensions, playing in a division with Florida … what are we thinking?
Not sure. We fell hard for this team as it steamrolled the competition late last fall, trouncing Florida, Auburn, and eventually dismembering Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl to finish up with a No. 2 ranking. Seven months ago, we proclaimed Georgia our No. 1 team, and we’re not backing off that.
Knowshown Moreno seems to have a little Marion Barber in him – maybe it’s just the number, but it could be the trucking and stiff-arms – and the offense seems to succeed with ease. But gone is Moreno’s wingman, RB Thomas Brown (779 yards, 10 TDs), and for the early part of the season, FB Brannan Southerland. The rebuilt offensive line is a major cause for concern, too. Like the QB Stafford. Don’t love him like Mel Kiper does. Florida has a better offense.
The best way to sum up the defense: It’s not otherworldly, but it should be as good or better statistically than LSU, and much better than Florida’s.
As you’ll certainly hear more than once this season: LSU won the title last year despite two losses. Play a difficult schedule, and the computers love you. If the Bulldogs get caught napping in Tempe a week after traveling to South Carolina – ugh: Remember when ASU randomly stunned No. 1 Nebraska a few years back, 19-0? – that will mean there is little or no room for error against LSU and the Gators.
Georgia’s landmark game is against Florida – win that, and the division should belong to Georgia; it likely will mean an SEC title game against LSU. But Mark Richt makes us a bit nervous. Nothing in particular – just don’t know if he can pull this off. At some point he’ll break through and pull off the National title. We just don’t know if it’s this year.
After reading more college football previews than we can count in the last few weeks, we’re actually picking Oklahoma to beat USC in the National title game. But part of us will be secretly (ah, hell – openly) pulling for Georgia.
10. Tennessee
9. BYU
8. Clemson
7. LSU
6. West Virginia
5. Ohio State
4. Florida
3. USC
2. Oklahoma

They don’t have Sturdivant either, which is a big deal.
I think the SEC East is more wide open than a lot of people think. Georgia is good, but I don’t think they are markedly better than UT or UF, and maybe even South Cackolacki. It’s a very tough division, and they aren’t going to go through it unscathed, nor are the other teams. They have the toughest schedule, and I’m not sure they are the best team in the SEC anyway, so I don’t think this ranking lasts. Moreno is great though. Stafford, not so much.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
ok,everybody: OVER-RATED, CLAP-CLAP-CLAPCLAPCLAP!
August 26th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
They got lucky as hell to beat Vandy last year, and the year earlier we beat them in Athens on their homecoming. Looking forward to playing spoiler again…
August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
@KC: You’re not the first to mention that. Think it was broken here and here.
And here.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Oklahoma over USC? No way
August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
The loss of Sturdivant may doom th Dawgs. That guy was a beast. When you look at the schedule I don’t see any sane person seeing anything better than 11-1 with 10-2 my best guess. Florida is going to be loaded on offense but they will give up some points. Tennessee always plays the Dawgs tough and then you have the ASU game and the trip to Auburn in late November. All in all if they go 11-1 that would be more impressive than any Big 10/Big 12/Pac 10 team going 12-0 in my opinion. Of course this is all moot as they will most likely lose 2 games.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Didn’t you hear? Georgia’s gonna lose at ASU on Sept. 20th. Surprised you didn’t know that.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Remember when ASU randomly stunned No. 1 Nebraska a few years back, 19-0?
That was 12 years ago. I don’t think the ASU/Georgia game will be the cakewalk everyone seems to think it will be for the Dawgs.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
am i the only one who thinks florida is a good bit better than georgia?
August 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
@ spence: nope. I agree.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
spence: I think Florida could be better than UGA as well. I think their defense should be better and they should be more balanced on offense. Honestly I just don’t see a lot of difference in the main SEC teams. I think they are all on the same level.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
UGA is the best team in the SEC, hands down. Unfortunately, for them, they get to play the toughest schedule in the country. That doesn’t bode well.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
then again…georgia could probably run up the middle 75% of the plays in the Cocktail party and just destroy UF cuz UF doesn’t have any non-AK47 toting DT’s.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
When is the last time that two teams ranked in the preseason top 3 played for the title? I can’t remember one, but then again, I could give a shit about preseason rankings.

August 26th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I see it as this. The three most proven and talented SEC teams: UGA, UF, and LSU. The second tier sleepers: UT and Auburn. The up and coming scary teams: South Carolina and Alabama.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
totally agree but the more and more i look at it, the more and more i like Auburn and LSU over either SEC East team. i just don’t trust that Georgia is all-world just because they beat hawaii.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Well said, sean john.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
spence: That could be true. Although I don’t think Auburn is on UGA or UF’s level talentwise. And I totally agree on Georgia’s perception due to waxing a hilariously undermanned UH team.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
was it USC/Texas? If so, then the time before that.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
I sent this in to TBL yesterday, but he failed to run with it in his breakdown of UGA:
Georgia at Arizona State on Sept. 20. Georgia has traveled a total of 358 miles since 1998 for nonconference games.
Don’t underestimate traveling across the country and playing in triple digit heat against a feisty Sun Devil squad led by the toughest SOB in the desert, Rudy Carpenter.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Sean…not on offense, but Auburn has, arguably, a much better defense than either of those teams, even with muschamp gone. sen’derick marks is an unholy beast.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Georgia is the best team in the country, but winning the NC is a different story. Soft schedules and no title games. USC and OSU should be proud.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Never heard of ‘em.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
ugh…that’s right. it’s ALL, 100% ENTIRELY OSU and USC’s fault that their conferences don’t have 12 teams and that ALL the other teams in their respective conferences suck.
/come back with something that pertains
August 26th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
spence: Yep. Auburn is always very solid on defense, no doubt. I’d probably agree with that.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Soft schedules and no title games. USC and OSU should be proud.
USC has a soft schedule? did the OSU game get cancelled?
August 26th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
I don’t believe they are getting the all world title because they beat Hawai’i. I would say more than likely it is because they didn’t really lose a lot of talent (they return 16 starters) and were playing good football at the end of last year.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Damn, I thought for sure MU was going to be on the top of this prediction list. Must have been a mistake somewhere because MU is #6 now. Maybe I’ll send TBL a reminder note of MU’s easy schedule.
vs Illini–win
vs. SEMO–Win
Vs. Nevada–Win
Vs. Buffalo–Win
@ Nebraska–Win
Vs. Ok State–Win
@ Texas–Loss (maybe)
Vs. Colorado–Win
@ Baylor–Win
Vs. K State–Win
@ Iowa State–Win
Arrowhead vs. Kansas–WIN
11-1 should be top 10 in my book.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Onterrio: No, but the Pac 10 didn’t either.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
where’s the loss vs. Oklahoma in the b12 game?
August 26th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
dwalthi: Yep, that factors in as well, but the drubbing of Hawaii in a big BCS bowl certainly didn’t hurt.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
@ spence, texas or OU? I’d say Texas this year.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Miz, read your link, glad to see that I was basically right and that I inspired such hard work in a person, well done.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
sean_john: It definitely didn’t hurt, however, let’s be honest, did anybody expect Hawai’i to make that a game? Honestly?
August 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
@ spence: Auburn’s big weaknesses are 2 new coordinators and a new QB… that’s too much to settle in the SEC
August 26th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
dwalthi: Unfortunately going into it, sure they did. Plenty of idiots on TV (who also vote in the polls) were claiming how Hawaii could keep it close. In retrospect, yeah, of course UGA was going to beat the shit out of them, but heading into that game plenty of people were drinking the Warrior/Brennan kool aid.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
When some teams have 1 hard game, and others have 6, it is likely that the team with 1 will have a better record, and end up in the championship. Is this really a novel concept, or have you just not been watching college football for the last 7 years.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
nwilson: Texas loses the two biggest weapons it had on offense last year in Charles and Sweed (and I think maybe their TE), and you think they jump ahead of OU?
August 26th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
There is the problem, idiots on T.V. I can’t tell you how many times I cringe when Lou Holtz opens his mouth to speak.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
UGA is the best team in the SEC, hands down. Unfortunately, for them, they get to play the toughest schedule in the country. That doesn’t bode well.
I think you just plagiarized every CFB writer in America.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
If you want to impersonate Lou Holtz, just press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and talk with a Southern Accent.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
And predict a South Carolina vs Notre Dame National Champioship game.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
lol. Yep.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Holtz also has the Jets winning the Super Bowl.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
@dwalthi… I’ll bet the most recent time was 2 days ago when sweet Lou predicted the Fighting Irish to have 11 wins. I haven’t belly-laughed liked that since… last year when sweet Lou predicted Notre Dame to win every week, including against USC.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
You sounds like a dog with peanut butter on the rough of your mouth.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Notre Dame will go 8-4 this year. Actually, make that 8-5 because they will lose their bowl game like they always do
August 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Lou Holtsch isch a geniousch. He isch alscho a great commenter on E ESCH P N.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Matt Stafford is overrated. What was his completion percentage last year? 53%?
August 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Missouri, huh? Another easy schedule doesn’t translate to success without Tony Temple. Good, but I don’t see a BCS berth.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
@wally’s- I spit my breakfast all over the kitchen table when he called an 11 win season. I couldn’t take another bite for a solid minutes.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Polls are generally meaningless, but I’m still baffled how BYU, Clemson, and Tennesseeeeeeeeeeeee make the cut and Mizzou isn’t on that list anywhere.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
TBL -
What’s your fascination with Tony Temple? He was a good running back that had a great Cotton Bowl. The new guy is better, supposedly. I suppose we’ll find out Saturday night. Hell, I hope they fail, but they are damn good.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
It only took me 44 years to get the job done.
/Cholesterol
August 26th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
And haven’t left the state for a non-conf game since the mid 1960’s
August 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I am a bit curious why the media is so enamored with Auburn. They have a great coach but they can’t settle on a QB Which is never good and having a brand new offense when you have to play UGA, LSU and Tennessee is never a good situation.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Temple 2007 Rushing stats
186 1,039 5.6 12
281 of those yards came in one game. Also, only caught 7 passes last year.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
August 26th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
@Gods- They are probably just tired of talking about The Hat and St. Saban.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
sorry for the late reply, nwilson…im going Oklahoma all the way. think they’re heads, shoulders, arms and legs better than Texas.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Thank you KC Resident. I heard Temples name mentioned 10 times last year. All in one game.
Yes I think Texas beats out OU this year. I’m a mack brown fan. Just a little though.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
It’s about find to find me a Tigers gravatar. Football season officially kicks off with MU and Illini in St. Louis Saturday, espn 7:30 cst.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Cursed, they wouldn’t be in a BCS bowl game with 8 wins.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Nwilson -
You are quite civil for being a Tiger fan. I had no clue. Anyhow, I would put Temple about 4th or 5th in terms of importance last year. Maclin, Chubby Midget QB, Tight Ends, then maybe T. Temple. Does that sound about right?
August 26th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Wilson. Is that game on ABC? I hope Mizzou trounces Ill.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
ugh…chase daniel. i have no idea how a guy who isn’t athletic at all, isnt fast, doesn’t have a spectacular arm and is pretty chubby can be a successful QB.
oh that’s right…b12 defenses are awful. how silly of me.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
looking forward to watching some of that game. Also, MU only 9.5 point favorite. Easy money.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
despite my previous comment…so do it.
fuck illinois.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
KC, you forgot william franklin. He’s doing quite well for the chiefs so far. Hopefully that can continue. Temple was just out there because he was a senior. Nobody expected anything out of him, then he goes and runs for 700 yards against Arkansas who laid down before the game even started and tbl is giving him rave reviews for last year. I can understand that if you seen one game you would think he’s the shit, but in reality he was just a good player. Losing him is like somebody stealing your 1991 chevy cavalier. It sucks, but you’ll just get something better.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
cbh: Not necessarily true. If they could still somehow finish in the top 10 with 8 wins, and they’d bin. Not totally beyond the realm of possibility, but true, not likely.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
ESPN’s first game fellas. Saturday night. It’s a big game every year they play in St. Louis.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
MU v Ill always seems closer than it should be. That being said, Mizzou by 3 tds.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Well it’s official. Everybody here hates the Illini. Good work. Tigers by 17. It does always end up closer than it should be.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Good analogy there wilson (I had a cav in high school). Arkansas was so interested in shutting down Daniel in that game that they paid no attention to the running game, which was odd because their secondary sucked ass all year and they were pretty good at stopping the run. The Hogs blew their showboat in the LSU game, which was fine, but were totally underprepared and overmatched in that Cotton Bowl it was sick.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Spence -
I think it has more to do with Big 12 teams having 21st century playbooks. The D will catch up in a few years. KU and OU were both Top 5 D’s last year and then there was a pretty big drop off.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Sean John, what about S. Carolina impresses you so much? I don’t think they are terrible, but I don’t see them any better than 4-4 in the sec this year.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
spence- Daniel has the benefit of a nasty supporting cast. Without that, you wouldn’t here about him.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Ahhh yes. Easy money. I’ve heard that before, and then my wallet always gets lighter. Love gambling season. Sort of.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Me too. Last years MU-Ill game made me nervous for my bank account.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
love martin rucker on the browns…and i agree the supporting cast is sick.
and yes, my life would be better off not ever having to see that trash ball, dirt strip again.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Somebody always has to mention a supporting cast, or a system. Talk to me after Saturday night, and tell me why he isn’t heisman ready. maybe a te will be taller than somebody else, or maybe a rb will be faster than the defense, or maybe it’ll because a short, chubby, white guy can throw it to a guy who is open. Just maybe.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
No offense KC, but Kansas didn’t necessarily play what one would consider a bunch of offensive powerhouses. That number 5 ranking might have been inflated.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
ark: They are going to have one of the better defenses in the entire SEC, which wins games. Also McKinney at WR is a bonafied ALL-SEC first teamer. The QB is a big question mark, but Spurrier seems pretty excited about the kid they are starting. I’m not necessarily “impressed so much” by them, I just think they have the potential to make some noise.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
The thing about S. Carolina is that they can’t last a whole season. They are lights out the first 6 games, then they start to wear down and the losses start to pile up They were 6th or 8th in the country at one point last year. If Spurrier could get some solid depth, they would be a better team.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Yep. I agree. Note, I said I think SC is probably a third tier SEC team, right on par with Alabama, but still not that far behind the teams ahead of them.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
It does seem like the same story with them every year. Luckily for Arkansas they always play them late in the season when the downfall has already begun.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
What’s amazing is how a team like Missouri (or Kansas last year) can go an entire year without beating a team worth a damn (spare me on Illinois tiger fans, they weren’t that good) and still end up in the top 10. Last year–and most likely this year–Missouri will play one good team and lose to them yet finish at 11-1. I see them at 11-2 losing to Texas and then OU in the title game this year. Hello Cotton Bowl.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Illinois beat OSU, Parrish. That must be worth some kind of damn.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Georgia will have trouble week 2.
/went to CMU
August 26th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
That says a hell of lot more about OSU than it does Illinois. OSU gets slapped around in the BCS title game and Illinois is embarrassed by USC.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
@Clown: Mizzou is going to dominate the B12 North this year, but do you really think they can hang with the USC’s, Florida’s and UGA’s of college football? They are a good team but nothing more.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
yea, it says that the ONE game where juice williams doesn’t look like a retard as a QB happened to be against the Bucks.
just ignore those other 11 dominant wins, because we’ll just go off small sample sizes.
i know you hate OSU, Gods, but you’re a whole lot smarter than that.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Nobody said Illini were good. Just saying that football doesn’t have too many top matchups in the opening weekend. MU vs. Illini is going to be better than all of those other 50-12 blowouts.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Exactly, Illinois has the talent to beat anyone, anytime. Problem is they are coached by the Zooker, so you never know what team is showing up on gameday, the great one or the the confused, mistake prone one. Any how dare a 3 loss team go on the road and lose to one of the best teams in the country in their home stadium. USC would have blown just about anyone out at that point, they were healthy and pissed off.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
of course, if you use this argument to defend OSU, it’s just that “they’re not good enough.”
actually, on second thought, i don’t wanna get started.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
And I don’t want to defend OSU, but its bull shit. Illinois got blown out, really, by USC, at home, the team that has been blowing people out for the past 5 years. The USC that was finally healthy by January and was as good if not better than LSU at that point and wanted to prove it.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
coop…but that’s been the way it’s gone forever. USC and the SEC teams get their bowl games in the south, close to where they play, and the big ten and big 12 teams have to travel, and it’s never going to change.
just ONCE i’d love to see an SEC team play in Wisky or the Big House in the winter and see how well they do.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
“That number 5 ranking might have been inflated.”
No arguement from me.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Fuck that. The sound of jangling keys scares Southern boys.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
yea, it says that the ONE game where juice williams doesn’t look like a retard as a QB happened to be against the Bucks.
just ignore those other 11 dominant wins, because we’ll just go off small sample sizes.
i know you hate OSU, Gods, but you’re a whole lot smarter than that.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
spence-
Your winter weather is no tougher to play in than the south’s summer weather. I would love to see SEC teams head up north as well as Big 10 teams play down south. However, since northern weather doesn’t, usually take a turn for the worse until later in the year, you probably will not see many SEC teams coming your way anytime soon.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Gods…first off, that Illinois game was an abortion, no excuses. and, second, i don’t think anyone outside of USC was beating that LSU team so…well, no excuses, i guess. this year will be markedly different (i hope).
dwalthi…it’s a lot different. have you ever hit someone in 20* weather? it fucking hurts.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Someone should tell those stupid NFL teams to stop drafting those Michigan and Penn State players. Apparently they are unathletic, good to know.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Spence- Ultimately, it is comparing opposite ends of the spectrum. I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and can remember playing pickup games in the snow in the winter. Hurts like hell, when you get hit. On the flip side, I have lived in Atlanta for 12 years and it is no easy task to be loaded up with lbs of extra equipment and play in 95* degree heat with a 97* humidity.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Yeah, because when I think of highly athletic skill players I think of 6th round phenom Mike Hart and Mike Vick-esque Chad Henne. Oh yeah, and the guy from Penn State who sounds like a jabroni (his name escapes me…as did wins in his college career).
August 26th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Spence – you’d love to see SEC teams play at Wisconsin? Yeah, UGA would be shaking in their fucking overalls.
/sarcasm
Coop – Did UGA do something bad to Penn State at some point? Because every fucking time UGA gets brought up you jump on them like it’s personal. Whether it’s Herschel Walker, Vince Dooley, or the entire UGA program, you act like they killed your children. Chill out, dude. We don’t give a fuck about Penn State. You shouldn’t give a fuck about us.
And I assure you, Spence, that it sucks just as much to get hit in 20 degree weather as it does in 100 degree weather. Keep trying to come up with excuses as to why your team has been beaten soundly by SEC teams the last two years. I’m not trying to be a dick, but c’mon, man. LSU was just better than OSU in ‘08. Florida was just better than OSU in ‘07. The SEC is far and away much better than the Big Ten, top to bottom (or any other way you look at it) the last few years. It’s okay. It doesn’t make you, as a fan, inferior to me, as a fan. It’s just a fact. It’s not shit-talking or anything else.
I don’t think anyone with a brain is picking UGA as #1 just because they beat the shit out of Hawaii. I don’t know why people keep saying that.
And August West – I know that you have to dwell on this every time UGA gets brought up (because what the fuck else does Vandy football have to be proud of), but I doubt that a loss to Vandy in 2006, when Matt Stafford was a true freshman (and making his first or second start), and Knowshon Moreno was playing in high school in NJ, and Kregg Lumpkin was our starting RB, has a whole hell of a lot to do with the game in 2008. But whatever floats your boat. While I’ve always been extremely apathetic toward Vandy fans (because, like I said before, it’s not like they’ve been a huge factor in the SEC that often), I’m getting tired of them. You beat us in ‘06. Great. We beat you in ‘07. But no…”the UGA players were stomping on the Vandy logo!!! WAHHHH!!!” Check youtube. Coutu made the game-winning field goal, and after he kicked it, he was standing on the Vandy logo. The rest of the players ran to him to celebrate (given that he had just won the game for them) and they happened to be standing on the logo (because, again, that’s where the kicker, who had just made the game-winning field goal, was standing). Again, it’s Vandy. It’s not like there’s a long history of acrimony between us. Get over it.
The Florida celebration was bad, and I’m not proud of it. But the Vandy thing was not taunting in any way. Vandy fans were just pissed because they lost.
It’s unfortunate that a lot of SEC fans are obnoxious, because it gives the rest of us a bad rap. But I think anyone with an objective mind can see that the SEC, from top to bottom, is the best conference in the nation on a consistent basis. Sure, there might be a year where the PAC 10 might be better. But more than likely, the year before that and the year after, the SEC was better. Which is why I say “on a consistent basis.”
And UGA doesn’t travel out of their conference that often. Would you, if you had to play Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn EVERY YEAR? In addition to any number of SEC West teams that they alternate between (LSU, Alabama, etc)? We also have an out-of-conference rivalry with Georgia Tech, who is usually a really good team. So, with 8 conference games (with anywhere from 2-5 of those being vs. ranked teams) and 1 non-conference game vs a team that’s usually ranked, why would we want to then, on top of that, travel to the west coast or the Big 10 to play ANOTHER good team at their home stadium? That doesn’t make much sense.
