Our Favorite NBA Underdog Finds a Home
College Basketball, NBA August 26th. 2008, 5:30pm
Is this some sort of record? Former UVa. hoops star Sean Singletary is now on his third NBA team in three months … and he’s only a rookie! Drafted by Sacramento, traded to Houston, and then yesterday, he was shipped to Phoenix. For the eight Singletary fans – including the reader who sent in this link – this is phenomenal news. The Suns PG depth chart is as follows: Steve Nash, combo guard Leandro Barbosa … and Singletary. (In looking at a subjective and silly list like this, it is a travesty Singletary isn’t mentioned. Greg Anthony without LJ and Plastic Man? Swap schools between Singletary with Jennings and then what? Ugh.)
Don’t know if we’ve documented our fondness of Singletary, but it dates back to our newspaper days. (Apologies in advance for the ramble.) We were covering an AAU basketball team in Vegas that was teeming with future college and NBA talent (JR Smith of the Nuggets was the team’s best player). Naturally there were massive egos, led by Sean Banks, the troublemaker who went to Memphis (we’ll never forget how Travis Outlaw of the Blazers absolutely abused him in one game; it was filthy stuff), but also nice kids like Villanova grad Will Sheridan and former Rutgers guard Marquis Webb.
You could tell Singletary was different. Once, while sitting in the hotel with these kids as they made moves on every female that moved (hey, that’s what teenagers do), Singletary just laughed them off and talked in depth about school, AP classes, what he was doing to get better as a player, what his individual workouts were like, and basically everything you’d want to hear from a grounded basketball talent. We’ll never stop rooting for this kid.

Agreed TBL, from what I have seen he does seem like a really good kid.
He got a great send off from UVA, got his jersey retired and then helped them wipe the floor with Maryland, that makes me like him.

They just signed Goran Dragic to back up Nash, too.

Did Singeltary win the Naismith award last year? The Frances Pomeroy Naismith award I mean.

Gordon Dragic is number two behind Nash. That kid is just amazing.
The Suns went from 0 backups for Nash to two good ones in a matter of weeks.

As a terp fan I hated seeing him, but respected the fact that he carried that program for the better part of three years. Wish him the best.
He was traded for terp DJ Strawberry so it will be interesting to see if he has a place on the Rockets.

if this Singletary kid was truly any good, the boy genius GM Daryl Morey would not have traded him.
/simple logic.

Singletary is the man, and would have been in a much better spot had he not returned to a terrible UVA team last season. Glad to see he’s getting a legitimate shot. He’ll make the most of it.

As a UNC fan I was always scared of him when they played. Solid player, and always seemed like a good kid. One of the only other guys I rooted for in the acc.

That’s a weird top 100. A ton of those guys did NOT play PG in college. But the list did bring back a ton of memories.

How the fuck did Jeff Boschee not make that list?

Sean Singletary is one of the guys that eases the pain of being a UVA fan. Our teams are incredibly frustrating (see: last year’s Gator Bowl, 1990 CFB season) but we tend to have high quality guys (Singletary, Chris Long, Herman Moore, etc.) that make you proud to be a Wahoo (”Officer” Olden Polynice not withstanding).

As VT fan i always had a lot of respect Singletary. he had zero help last year so he didnt get the attention he deserved but a great “student-athlete”.
Singletary was the clutchest player in the ACC for several years.

As the other UVA fan on this board, I concur with wahoowa. My oldest son and I had the pleasure of meeting Sean during a fan fest event before one of the UVA football games about three years ago. Just an outstanding young man.
But let’s be clear: only the UVA football and hoops teams are frustrating. We kick ass in all of the nonrevenue sports. I know you’re feeling our mighty crew!
