Leftovers: Yesterday’s Scores Warmed Up
College Football August 31st. 2008, 1:00pm
Who knows which games were properly covered yesterday (none of them). Keeping my inadequacies in mind, here are some quick recaps from the Saturday college football scoreboard.
(3) USC 52, Virginia 7 – Pac10Speed! (Is that how it works?) Mark Sanchez was 26-35 for 338 yards.
(4) Oklahoma 57, Chattanooga 2 – Perhaps the most insulting blowout ever. Seriously, why schedule this game? Are recruits thinking they can go to Chattanooga to get blown out by a real program? 2 points? “Ball Through End Zone” – horrible. Find me a highlight.
(6) Missouri 52, (20) Illinois 42 – Without having seen a snap, this looks like it would have been a great game to watch. I blame not seeing this game on the Big Televen Network. Even if I was watching Art School Confidential tonight. I still blame others for my missing this game. The two teams combined for over one thousand yards.
Georgia 45, Georgia Southern 21 – Georgia had 535 total yards. I’m searching – I swear I am – for a mention of Knowshon Moreno’s injury, but I just can’t find it. Please someone send a link before I freak out… Oh, wait… here it is…
Georgia fans also were holding their breath as star tailback Knowshon Moreno grabbed his right hamstring during a touchdown run. Apparently, Moreno was only cramping up in the heat in Athens, Ga.
/blacks out
I know that there was really no reason for two “Beanie”-related posts yesterday (unless you count humor), so I sincerely apologize to any fans that feel their injured “stars” were neglected. Seriously*.
(21) Oregon 44, Washington 10 – There was a quarterback change by the winning team during this game. I probably should have written an entire post.
(9) Clemson 10, (24) Alabama 34 – Nick Saban said, “Nobody can be satisfied with a one-game performance,” after yesterday’s game. I say “No shit. Who would be satisfied by a one-game ass-kicking?”
*Not seriously.

Texas 52, Florida Atlantic 10. Vince Young’s #10 was retired, and Kevin Durant was there too. Sadly, that unflushable turd named Matthew McConaughey was also in attendance. At least he was wearing a shirt this time.

For the record… Mizzou had 260 yards rushing. Tony Temple’s departure is crushing the running game.
The Mizzou/Ill game was fun to watch if you are a fan of WAC teams. Both teams should be embarassed. However, I’m not sure if this game is indictative of anything. MU v Ill is always a weird game.

Nice to see USC’s starters in the game well into the fourth quarter.

OU was contracted to play Clemson in a home and home, but the Tigers bailed to get walloped by Bama (and collect 1.9 million). Chattanooga was the best they could do to reschedule.

They were playing a BCS opponent in their only game before they play Ohio State. They needed reps in live action. No one got hurt, so it was excellent coaching, as per Pete Carroll’s usual.

Never said it was bad coaching,my words were just a reminder to those getting carried away with the final score. OSU on the other hand played three different quarterbacks and three freshman lineman in the first half. Yes USC dominated, but I’m not sure how much we learned about them in the fourth quarter with Sanchez still in the game against a very bad division 1A opponent (some Cavalier fans are saying this is the worst team they’ve had in years).

Still, they’re a better team than Youngstown State, and with a week two bye they don’t have any more opportunities to tune up for OSU. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, have another game (Ohio – also worse than Virginia) to get any kinks out.
I’ll admit that it’s hard to say much was learned about SC’s offense, but the defense was every bit as good as advertised. Bad opponent or not, it was impressive. Considering who the teams’ opponents were, USC showed some things, and I don’t think you can learn much of anything from a D1 power beating up on an AA opponent.

Thecassino, your defense is bad ass, no doubt about it. Can’t wait for USC, it’s what college football is all about. That and Brent Musberger.
